Chelsea got back to winning ways against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the League Cup on Wednesday night.
It wasn’t the perfect performance from the Blues, far from it, but they were certainly the better team and scored some wonderful goals.
Moreover, had Liam Delap not got himself sent off, Enzo Maresca’s side would likely have had a far easier time of things.
The former Ipswich Town star hasn’t had an easy start to life at Chelsea, and now it looks like he could soon have more competition coming from Cobham.
Liam Delap's Premier League record
Chelsea paid Ipswich Town around £30m for Delap in the summer, and while his stock isn’t exactly high at the moment, that was still a brilliant deal.
In The Pipeline
Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.
After all, during his time at Manchester City, he was regarded as one of the next big things, scoring 35 goals and providing nine assists in 36 appearances for their Under-23 side.
Moreover, once he got his first move to the Tractor Boys last summer, he quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young forwards in the Premier League.
For example, despite playing for a team destined for relegation, the Winchester-born poacher was still able to rack up an impressive tally of 12 goals and two assists in 37 appearances, totalling 2616 minutes.
In other words, the Englishman was able to average a goal involvement every 2.64 games, or every 186.85 minutes for the Suffolk side, which is not bad going considering he’d made just ten appearances in the competition for City in the years before.

However, he has not been so lucky this season.
Prior to his hamstring injury, the summer signing made just three appearances in the competition for the Blues, two of which came off the bench, in which he failed to score or assist a goal.

He won’t even have the chance to open his account this weekend either, as his second yellow against Wolves means he’s suspended for the game against Tottenham Hotspur.
In all, Delap is a player with plenty of promise, but at a club like Chelsea, forwards aren’t always allowed a great deal of time, especially when there is a particularly exciting forward making his way through the academy at the moment.
The Cobham star who could replace Delap
As is the case every season, Chelsea have an abundance of incredibly exciting players at Cobham this season, with Chizaram Ezenwata being one of the most notable.
The 17-year-old phenom, whom U23 scout Antonio Mango claims fans should “get excited for”, joined the Blues from Charlton Athletic and has already become one of the star players for the club’s U18 side.
For example, in 20 appearances last season, totalling just 1279 minutes, the dynamic gem managed to score 12 goals and provide three assists, which works out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.33 games, or every 91.93 minutes.
Impressively, the youngster has become even more of an attacking threat this season.
In just six appearances for the U18s, totalling 534 minutes, he has scored seven goals and provided one assist, which comes out to an average of 1.33 goal involvements per game, or one every 66.75 minutes.

In fact, the teenage goal machine has done such an incredible job in the U18s, that he has now made six appearances for the U21s.
It’s not just the output that should excite fans, though, as he looks to be a complete package.
According to one analyst, he “has a strong physique that allows him to shield and hold up the ball effectively”, and his “off-ball movement is outstanding.”
Ultimately, it is still very early in his career, but Ezenwata appears to be a seriously impressive prospect and someone who could rival Delap for gametime in the coming years.

Wolves boss Vitor Pereira could become the fourth Premier League manager to be sacked in the 2025-26 campaign as the Portuguese coach has reportedly been given just four matches to prove himself. Wolves are off to a nightmare start in the new season as they have failed to register a single victory after eight rounds of matches in the Premier League and find themselves languishing at the bottom of the league table.
Pereira could lose his job despite signing new contract
Wolves made a big decision back in September when they offered a new three-year deal to Pereira, despite the club losing their first four Premier League matches. The decision surprised many as the club looked terribly out of form at that point. The club's stance on offering a new deal was revealed through an official statement from chairman Jeff Shi, which read: "Vitor has made a very positive impact during his time at Wolves. He’s brought clarity, energy and a team spirit that gives us a foundation to be successful. What he achieved last season was excellent, with a highly competitive record, including six Premier League wins in a row and a deserved nomination for the Manager of the Season award. Now is a time for stability. Vitor needs time to work with the squad, to build a chemistry with new players, and we will do everything to support him and his staff."
The Portuguese coach arrived at Molineux last December and guided the club from 19th to 16th and top-flight safety. However, Pereira has failed to inspire his players in the current campaign and is at risk of losing his job.

Pereira has four games to prove himself
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has claimed that Wolves are likely to make a final call on Pereira's future during the next international break in November. Till then, Pereira has four matches to turn things around at Molineux, starting with their upcoming Premier League fixture against Burnley on Sunday. After the Burnley clash, Wolves face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, followed by back-to-back away league matches against Fulham and the Blues.
Speaking on the , Brown said: "There will be a concern for Wolves right now if they don’t improve, they could find themselves cut adrift and when that normally happens you see a potential managerial change happening. Obviously, they’ve got Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, Fulham then away after the Burnley game is a tricky one, then Chelsea away. So there are some difficult looking fixtures after the Burnley game for Wolves and Vitor Pereira. And then we’ve got the international break, and that could be the time if things haven’t improved. If they haven’t picked up too many points in those next three Premier League games then you can possibly see the pressure really being on Pereira. When you get the international break, it gives clubs the opportunity to assess things, and the fears could be there that they could make a change in the hot seat at Molineux."
Can Wolves sack Pereira less than two months after contract renewal?
Football Insider further claims that Wolves are not concerned about paying a hefty compensation to Pereira, who penned a new deal less than two months ago. A section of the fan base is already demanding the sacking of the head coach, while the club have a hidden clause in the new contract of the manager. The clause, however, has not been disclosed but there is definitely no guarantee that Pereira's position is safe even after extending his stay at Molineux.

Which other clubs have sacked their managers?
It's only been over two months since the 2025-26 Premier League kicked off and we have already seen the sacking of three managers from their positions. Nottingham Forest's managerial merry-go-round has been the most-talked about incident in the league thus far as the club have already sacked two managers. They first parted ways with Nuno Espirito Santo in September as they brought in former Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou. But the Australian coach lasted just 39 days in his position, as Sean Dyche recently replaced him at the helm.
Nun, on the other hand, made a swift return to the English top-flight as he replaced former Chelsea boss Graham Potter at West Ham. The Hammers decided to part ways with the English coach after a terrible start to the new season.
Rohit and Bairstow took MI to the second-highest total in any IPL playoff game, and ensured that GT’s target always remained just out of reach

Where did GT err in their bowling plans?
Strip away everything else, and you can more often than not reduce T20 contests to a simple count-off: who hit more sixes? Mumbai Indians (MI) hit 17 in the IPL 2025 Eliminator, and Gujarat Titans (GT) hit eight.Rohit Sharma top-scored for MI with 81 off 50 balls; B Sai Sudharsan top-scored for GT with 80 off 49. The difference lay in MI’s hitting depth. Five of their batters cleared the boundary at least three times each.Related

This hitting depth took MI to the second-highest total in any IPL playoff game, and ensured that GT’s target always remained just out of reach, even though their chase, advantaged by dew, was alive almost until the end.And there was one other difference between MI and GT, a difference MI can call on against every other team in the tournament: Jasprit Bumrah. His raw figures were impressive enough – 1 for 27 in four overs – and he also produced the moment of the match, a pinpoint leg-stump yorker to bowl Washington Sundar between his legs, and end an 84-run fourth-wicket stand with Sai Sudharsan.Bumrah followed up with an 18th over that went for just nine runs – despite containing a six – and that left GT with 36 to get off the last 12 balls. It became 24 off six after Trent Boult’s 19th over, and while it was possible – especially with Rahul Tewatia and M Shahrukh Khan at the crease – it’s an equation that usually favours the bowling team.1:29
Two lives for Rohit ‘unlocked the freedom’
Rohit rides his luck, Bairstow returns with a bangMI’s total was built on the back of a blazing start from their new opening pair. Jonny Bairstow, replacing Ryan Rickelton who has left for international duty, smashed a 22-ball 47 on his debut for his third IPL team. Rohit, meanwhile, made his fourth fifty and highest score of the season.MI chose to bat a day after Punjab Kings (PBKS), sent in, had been bowled out for 101 at the same venue the day before. This was a different pitch, however, with even bounce and none of the seam movement of Qualifier 1.Even so, GT could have had MI in trouble early, only for Gerald Coetzee and Kusal Mendis – the latter making his IPL debut – to put Rohit down on 3 and 12. Within minutes, GT were firmly on the back foot, with Bairstow tonking Prasidh Krishna for 26 runs – though two of his boundaries came off the edge – in the fourth over.Bairstow fell in the eighth over, but MI kept punching. Rohit’s use of the sweep against GT’s spinners was particularly noteworthy, bringing him 27 runs – the most he’s scored with variants of the sweep against spin in any IPL innings for which shot data is available – off just six balls. He slowed down after reaching his half-century, only scoring 31 off his last 22 balls. Here was another parallel with Sai Sudharsan’s innings: he scored 28 off his last 21. And just like Sai Sudharsan and Washington, Rohit and Bairstow put on 84 off 44 balls.1:38
Moody: Bairstow is used to such pressure moments
MI flex their middle-order muscleThe most ominous thing about MI’s innings was the steadily rising frequency of their six-hitting. Even though Bairstow and Suryakumar Yadav – who made his 15th successive 25-plus score in T20s – were out by then, they cleared the rope nine times in the last six overs, with Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir doing their bit before Hardik Pandya finished with three maximums off Coetzee in a 22-run final over.If GT could have done anything differently with the ball, it could have been to use the slower ball more often. Prasidh and Mohammed Siraj dismissed Rohit and Tilak in the 17th and 18th overs with skilful use of this weapon, but GT probably turned to it a little too late, and didn’t use it often enough even then.By the time dew set in during the chase, this option was taken out of MI’s toolkit, leaving them to put their trust in on-pace yorkers and the odd hard-length ball.1:49
Moody: Sudharsan an all-format player for India for 10-plus years
GT rebound quickly from early loss of GillGT lost Shubman Gill early, with Boult striking in typical fashion – angling the ball across the right-hand batter and bending it back to trap him lbw – to pick up his 32nd first-over wicket in the IPL. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is some way behind in second place with 27.Then Bumrah bowled a four-run first over of swing and searing pace, leaving GT 9 for 1 after two. But they quickly found their voice, with Mendis putting a shocker behind the stumps – apart from the early Rohit spill, he also dropped Suryakumar in the 12th over – behind him with a pair of big leg-side sixes off Boult in the third over, and Sai Sudharsan finding the gaps with impressive frequency while rushing past 700 – and then 750 – runs for the season.Mendis was looking ominous on 20 off nine balls when he fell in unfortunate fashion, his back foot slipping backwards when he stepped deep in his crease to pull Mitchell Santner in the seventh over, and trampling the stumps. It portended good things for GT in a way, though, since it was an early sign of dew.The ball certainly came onto the bat beautifully as the Sai Sudharsan-Washington partnership surged. Washington took a little while to get going – he was on 11 off nine initially – but quickly found his boundary-hitting range and began to dominate the stand. When he hit Boult for two sixes and a four in the 13th over, he was on 47 off 22, and GT needed 81 off 42.2:13
Moody: Ridiculous how far ahead of the rest Bumrah is
Bumrah turns the tideIt was at this point that Bumrah re-entered the game. The fourth ball of his third over was a candidate for the ball of IPL 2025, swerving late, homing into the base of leg stump, and Washington’s front leg opening up to try and create space for his bat to access the ball only created a channel for the ball to burst through. It wasn’t over yet, but with Sai Sudharsan falling to Richard Gleeson – another MI debutant – in the 16th over as GT chased a boundary almost every ball, MI’s grip tightened. And with all the dew about, their execution of yorkers – they usually didn’t miss by much even when they did miss – was exemplary.Bumrah and Boult were excellent, and Gleeson bowled three hard-to-hit balls in the 20th to close it out mathematically before trudging off with a hamstring issue, but impact sub Ashwani Kumar was just as good. The left-armer eventually had the responsibility of bowling the last three balls, and finished with 1 for 28 in 3.3 overs.

Chelsea maintained their unbeaten start to the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, with a 2-0 win over local rivals Fulham at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.
Enzo Maresca’s side now sit on seven points in England’s top-flight, adding to their 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace and 5-1 rout against West Ham United last weekend.
It was a superb display from the Blues on home soil, taking control of the game and limiting Marco Silva’s side to just three shots on target in the 90-minute contest.
Chelsea manager EnzoMarescabefore the start of the second half
The game wasn’t all positive for the Italian, with striker Liam Delap limping off with a hamstring injury within the opening quarter of an hour – which is set to rule the Englishman out for eight weeks.
Such a display allowed numerous players to thrive once again, standing their claim for a regular starting role in the club’s hunt for Premier League success come the end of May.
How Chelsea’s win over Fulham played out
Chelsea were fortunate not to find themselves one goal down early in the clash at the Bridge, with Josh King putting the visitors ahead – but the goal was ruled out after Rodrigo Muniz was adjudged to have committed a foul in the build-up.
However, the Blues took the lead just minutes before the break, after Enzo Fernández’s corner was nodded into the far corner by summer addition Joao Pedro.
Maresca’s side held a one-goal lead going into the break, which quickly became two in the second half after yet another VAR intervention from Michael Salisbury.
A cross from Trevoh Chalobah was blocked by the arm of Ryan Sessegnon, resulting in a penalty being awarded after referee Rob Jones was sent to the monitor.
Captain Enzo tucked home the subsequent spot kick, completing the scoring and securing a second league win in the three outings so far in 2025/26.
Alongside Enzo and Pedro, one other Blues player hugely impressed during the triumph, now being more than deserving of a consistent run within the starting eleven.
The Chelsea star who’s now as undroppable as Enzo & Pedro
Given the huge volume of signings at Chelsea over the past couple of years, it’s been tricky for Maresca to find a settled starting eleven that could lead his side to success.
Hundreds of millions of pounds have already been spent over recent campaigns, including over £200m this window – with today’s goalscorer Pedro just one of the additions made by the hierarchy.
However, the Blues have also been the home to one of the best academies in the country over recent years, often developing talents who can make an impact in the first-team.
Centre-back Chalobah is just one player who has developed through such a system, now being a key member of Maresca’s side – despite looking certain to depart 12 months ago.
He started the game against the Cottagers this afternoon, having a game to remember and helping the side keep a clean sheet on their way to victory.
The centre-back made three tackles and won 11 duels – with both tallies the highest of any player on the pitch – offering a dominant presence out of possession.
However, in possession, the 26-year-old also starred, recording 80 touches and completing 90% of the passes he attempted – with five of his efforts going into the final third.

Such a showing has certainly cemented his place within Maresca’s starting eleven, subsequently being able to form a superb partnership at the heart of the backline with Tosin.
The fact that he’s been able to keep out new signing Jorel Hato shows the quality the academy graduate possesses – with Maresca needing to stand by him in the months ahead.
Better signing than Simons: Chelsea targeting "generational" £100m talent
Despite missing out on Xavi Simons, Chelsea could be plotting an even bigger statement move…
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had three top targets in mind for the club in a variety of different positions during the summer window, but new sporting director Andrea Berta didn’t sign any of them.
It was a solid first ever window at the Emirates for Berta, who’s only grown his reputation as an adept deal-maker since replacing Edu Gaspar in late March.
Arsenal spent over £250 million on an array of key signings under Berta’s debut watch, including the centrepiece addition of prolific striker Viktor Gyokeres after two seasons free scoring in Portugal.
The north Londoners also sensationally hijacked Tottenham’s deal for England international playmaker Eberechi Eze right after Kai Havertz’s knee injury, showing how determined Berta was to back Arteta in the market.

However, the pair didn’t always agree on everything.
There were credible reports that Berta and Arteta were in disagreement over signing Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko, with the latter a long-time target for Arsenal before he was forced to join Man United instead — rejecting Newcastle in the process.
Arsenal made a proposal for Sesko in the summer of 2024 and tried again in January (Ben Jacobs), only for Berta to come in and sway the hierarchy into swooping for Gyokeres instead (The Athletic).
Gyokeres
An initial £55 million for a striker who bagged 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting CP, not to mention a forward who also has some experience in English football, could be seen as a great move by comparison to Sesko’s far more limited return.
By swapping Sesko for Gyokeres, Arsenal chose to pursue an immediate upgrade rather than one for the future.
Arteta wanted Mbeumo, Garcia and Huijsen at Arsenal in the summer
According to The Athletic and journalist James McNicholas, Sesko wasn’t Arteta’s only personal target.
Arsenal manager MikelArtetacelebrates after the match
Indeed, McNicholas reports that Arteta personally wanted Bryan Mbeumo, Dean Huijsen and Joan Garcia — who all moved to different clubs this summer for a combined total fee of around £137 million.
Mbeumo has impressed since joining Man United from Brentford after a long-winded transfer saga, whilst Berta was apparently hesitant to pay Garcia’s £21.5m release clause to sign him from Espanyol — instead opting for the much cheaper Kepa — with the former eventually signing for Barcelona.
Real Madrid triggered Huijsen’s £50 million release clause and ended all hope of Arsenal keeping him in the Premier League, with Mbeumo’s move to United setting them back an initial £65 million.
There is little denying this trio of stars would’ve also reinforced Arsenal’s ranks to great effect, but Arteta doesn’t appear to have any ill feeling towards Berta, who worked very hard to sign Piero Hincapie on loan at the end of the window as a direct replacement for Jakub Kiwior.
After the sale of Jacob Ramsey handed them some wriggle room on the PSR front, Aston Villa are now reportedly eyeing a fresh approach to sign a player who Unai Emery loves.
Emery "accepts" PSR rules in frustrating summer
Aston Villa were finally forced to face their PSR concerns and sell an important member of Emery’s squad in Jacob Ramsey. The academy graduate completed a move to Newcastle United, who are likely to compete with Aston Villa for a place in the top six this season. It’s a move that needed to happen financially, but one that captain John McGinn has already aired his frustration about.
As frustrating as Ramsey’s sale will be for all involved at Villa Park, however, Emery has “accepted” PSR rules and reiterated the pride that he has in his side.
The Spaniard told reporters: “No, I’m not frustrated. I accept the rules, I accept where we are and how we are competing and how we are being ambitious in our capacity to compete with the better teams in the Premier League and in Europe.”
“I think you have to be proud of everything we are doing. But of course, everything we did for me is done now, we have to do it again and again and again and it’s starting again for me to beat these teams and to build, through the result, good performances and try to get our title we have.”
Meanwhile, what Ramsey’s departure has done is hand Villa some room to make some moves of their own, which could yet see them welcome a Premier League rival this month.
Aston Villa eyeing Jackson loan deal
Whilst they’re in no position to match his €60m (£52m) price tag, those at Villa Park could yet bypass FFP rules in a fresh approach to welcome Nicolas Jackson this summer. According to Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg, Aston Villa are now eyeing a loan deal to sign Jackson after he was dropped by Chelsea following their own impressive additions.
Emery is reportedly a huge admirer of Jackson, who worked under the Villa boss during their time together at Villarreal, and may yet get the chance to strike a reunion before the transfer window slams shut.
