Indians would do well in not taking Zimbabwe lightly

On past record and present form, the two crucial criteria on the eveof any contest, it is tempting to place Zimbabwe as no-hopers in thefive-match one-day series against India. But in reality, the scenariois not as simple as that.

Even Indian coach John Wright conceded that the absence of Tendulkarand Sehwag will be felt, although he is hoping to build on theconfidence that the Indians would have gained after winning bothTests. While expressing the view that India will win the series,Wright admitted that Zimbabwe are a better limited-overs side than aTest team.

It is true that Zimbabwe lost all three one-day games in 1992-93 andwent down by four matches to one on the next tour of this country just15 months ago. Also, India got the better of New Zealand and SouthAfrica at home during the 1999-2000 season and lost only to worldchampions Australia by one match a year ago in a stirring contest thatwent down to the wire. The squared verdict against England a few weeksago is neither here nor there.India’s dominance at home is not as pronounced in the one-day game asit is in Test cricket. But the track record is still very impressive. But India would do well to not take the Zimbabweans too lightly. Onlylast year, they won home and away contests against New Zealand.Although their steadily improving record was tarnished by 3-0 and 5-0defeats to South Africa and England at home earlier this season, it isobvious that Zimbabwe are not the team that once had an unenviablerecord of having lost seven out of eight games played in two bilateralcontests in this country.Having acclimatised themselves to Indian conditions and after sizingup the opposition even if limited-overs cricket is different fromthe longer version of the game the Zimbabweans will fancy theirchances of challenging the home side. But the fact is that the Indianshave been considerably weakened by the non-availability, due tovarious reasons, of Javagal Srinath, Sachin Tendulkar and VirenderSehwag. The withdrawal of these key players immediately throws doubt over thetop order, the middle order and the opening bowling. Zimbabwe’sexperienced all-rounder Heath Streak has been quick and accurate inhis assessment of the situation. He feels the absence of Tendulkar andSehwag will greatly reduce the firepower of the Indians and “we hopeto cash in on that.” That is a true professional speaking.Even Indian coach John Wright conceded that the absence of Tendulkarand Sehwag will be felt, although he is hoping to build on theconfidence that the Indians would have gained after winning bothTests. While expressing the view that India will win the series,Wright admitted that Zimbabwe are a better limited-overs side than aTest team. Whatever their batting and bowling limitations ascompared to the Indians on paper they proved in the Test matchesthat they were far superior in fielding, and this aspect gains inimportance in the one-day game.Zimbabwe’s batting will again revolve around the Flower brothers, theexperienced Alistair Campbell, skipper Stuart Carlisle, Craig Wishart, the solid Dion Ebrahim and Douglas Marillier. Streak of course can bedepended on to strike a few lusty blows in the end overs, and theburly, experienced all-rounder will also spearhead the bowling attack, manned by Travis Friend, Gary Brent and Pommie Mbangwa. For India, Ajit Agarkar and Zaheer Khan will be in charge of the newball in the absence of Srinath, while Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singhwill complete the quartet of main bowlers. Sanjay Bangar and SouravGanguly, as back-up bowlers, look pretty modest, and it is here thatthe absence of Tendulkar and Sehwag will be felt, for the two, besidestheir expertise with the bat, can always be counted upon to eitherrestrict the scoring or break a troublesome partnership. Thus theresponsibilities on the four main bowlers will be that much greater. While the non-availability of Tendulkar and Sehwag will obviously befelt, the batting still looks quite strong. A line up of Ganguly,Bangar, Dinesh Mongia, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, Mohammad Kaif andAgarkar does inspire confidence. I have never been happy with theselection of Shiv Sunder Das for the one-day squad. He is blessed witha technique ideally suited to Test cricket, and it would be better ifthis precious gift were restricted to the longer game instead of theslam-bang variety. In the long run, the exposure to limited-overscricket might harm his technique, and Indian cricket certainly can dowithout such damage. Ajay Ratra, on the other hand, is a welcomechoice, and it is to be hoped that he grabs this opportunity with bothgloves and cements his place in the squad.

Celtic: Dean Jones makes Antoine Semenyo claim

Journalist Dean Jones has made a claim on Celtic’s chances of signing Bristol City forward Antoine Semenyo, GiveMeSport report.

The Lowdown: Strachan’s visit

Celtic senior scout Craig Strachan made a 742-mile round trip from Glasgow to Bristol to watch Semenyo in action earlier this month, as reported by Bristol World.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-21/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 22-year-old scored in a 2-1 win over Reading at Ashton Gate with Strachan in attendance, with the Hoops the latest to check in on the versatile forward.

Semenyo has contributed to 14 goals in the second tier this season, scoring and providing an assist in Saturday’s win over Middlesbrough.

The Latest: Jones’ comments

As reported last month, Bristol City value Semenyo at around £20m, a fee which would smash Celtic’s all-time transfer record, which currently stands at £9.27m.

Jones was talking to GiveMeSport regarding the Hoops’ chances of signing Semenyo in the summer and was unsure the club would have the financial power to do so.

“I don’t know if they could afford him, to be honest.”

The Verdict: Unlikely?

Semenyo’s current contract expires in 2023, so should his situation remain the same, you’d like to think Bristol City’s £20m valuation would come down slightly.

However, the Hoops may still need to write an eight-figure cheque for the first time in their history, making a move unlikely.

Celtic may well activate clauses in Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers’ loan deals to make them permanent Hoops players in the summer for a combined £12.5m outlay, so spending big on Semenyo might not be a priority for ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Vice-captaincy role for Lampard

Frank Lampard has been confirmed as England’s new World Cup vice-captain.

The Chelsea midfielder will assist new skipper Steven Gerrard following the knee injury which has ended former captain Rio Ferdinand’s hopes of playing in the finals in South Africa.

Gerrard was installed as vice-captain when Ferdinand was named skipper in February after the media storm which surrounded the axing of John Terry as captain in Fabio Capello’s squad.

The Liverpool midfielder has now stepped up to the full captaincy role with Lampard taking the vice-captain’s slot.

“I am vice-captain,” confirmed Lampard, who has won 78 caps since making his international debut in 1999.

“I was told by the manager and (assistant) Franco Baldini yesterday and I am very proud of that.

“Obviously I am very disappointed for Rio. He is a mate.

“But what can I do? I shall just try to give my input as a vice-captain.”

Meanwhile, Lampard has expressed his disappointment for former West Ham academy and first-team colleague Ferdinand.

The Manchester United defender damaged knee ligaments during training on Friday and has been replaced by Tottenham’s Michael Dawson in the squad.

“I am very disappointed for him to say the least,” continued Lampard.“I spoke to him last night and he is obviously very down.

“He is such a good mate and for this to happen in the build-up to the biggest tournament made me feel sick in my stomach.”

O’Neill in favour of winter break

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has thrown his weight behind the idea of introducing a Premier League winter break.

Following England's disappointing World Cup campaign, many players were thought to have been suffering from the effects of a long season and the Northern Irishman feels it would be beneficial if it was placed on the calendar.

When coach at Scottish giants Celtic, O'Neill was sure the break north of the border was a major reason for their excellent UEFA Cup final exploits in 2003.

Speaking to reporters, he said:"I am a great believer in it and I think it is important. But I am not controlling affairs.

"People assume it causes a loss of impetus but that's absolutely not the case. You would still have Boxing Day and New Year games and then you have the break – for about three weeks.

"It gives the players a chance to get away with their families. They feel much better for it. It was so beneficial.

"One of the years when we had the break in Scotland, Celtic went on to reach the UEFA Cup final.

Donovan opens the door to Everton return

Former Everton loanee Landon Donovan has opened the door to a possible return to Goodison Park, despite Major League Soccer being keen to keep him in his homeland.

The 28-year-old USA international is currently with the LA Galaxy, but has hinted at a move back to Europe, having scored twice in 13 appearances during a loan spell with the Toffees last season.

He told the Daily Mirror: “I would love to go back to Everton. I love the people there and I love the fans there.

“But that said, I love being in America too, so we are going to take everything into account and see where it ends up.

“Anything is possible at this stage and I’m going to make the decision that’s best for me. We hear little bits and pieces here and there and there have certainly been clubs that are interested, but right now, it’s only preliminary.

Major Billy Clarke blow for Blackpool

Blackpool striker Billy Clarke looks set to miss the entire season following knee ligament surgery.

Clarke, 22, injured his knee during the Seasiders' opening pre-season friendly against Tiverton Town earlier this month.

Initial estimates put his recovery time at about three months, but manager Ian Holloway has now revealed the injury is worse than was first feared.

Clarke underwent surgery on a ruptured cruciate ligament last week and could now miss the entire new Premier League campaign.

"It might be the whole season now," Holloway told the club's official website.

"He was looking so sharp in training and had done so much in the summer to try and get over the knocks he had last year.

Fulham desperate to keep Mark Schwarzer

Fulham boss Mark Hughes insists that goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is going nowhere, after the player made it known that he would to join Arsenal.

The 37-year-old Australia international is reported to be a top target for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who is keen to bring in an experienced keeper to help out Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski.

However, Hughes told reporters:"From our point of view the situation has not changed. There was interest from Arsenal in May.

"Their bid was refused. We have not had any more bids and we wouldn't encourage any.

"Mark sees it as an opportunity with the current stage that he is at in his career. I can appreciate that, but he has to understand that we have to protect Fulham too.

"At the moment it wouldn't be right for Fulham football club.

"He is an outstanding goalkeeper. It's only when you work with players that you realise how good they are.

"It would be difficult to replace him. It's difficult to get the right quality into your football club. We have a top-class keeper in our squad and we would like to keep him."

Schwarzer had earlier said:"Who wouldn't be keen to go to Arsenal?

"At this stage in my career it's an amazing opportunity to play at that level and one I really want to take."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Are Arsenal star’s moans really vindicated?

Arsene Wenger has lavished gifts upon Arsenal during his time as manager, his pretensions for the beautiful manner in which his side play football are a delight for the purist – but no longer can he use this as a shield to protect him from the critics, who cite their defensive frailty as the sole reason for an empty trophy cabinet in recent years.

On their day, Arsenal are a spectacular sight but as we have seen, when confronted by a physical presence they wilt and this must be eradicated if they are to mount a serious title challenge. Wenger has added Laurent Koscielny to his back line in order to sure things up and a bid for France international centre-back Sebastien Squillaci leaves only one final cure: a top-class goalkeeper.

Whilst the rumours continue to rumble on, current goalkeeper Manuel Almunia is in despair as a dark cloud begins to surface over his Arsenal future. But can the Spaniard really complain? For any despair endured by him should the club seal of a deal for Mark Schwarzer or Shay Given is similar to what the Emirates faithful feel when he is in goal.

Stats unfortunately offer brutal reality and Almunia was 17th in saves per shot at 87.8% last season and if, for instance, Almunia had the same save % as Van der Sar at 94.1% (5.9% allowed) then Arsenal’s league position may have benefited greatly.

Although this is perhaps not a solid base to construct an argument that Arsenal are desperate for a new goalkeeper, couple them with the high-profile errors that have dogged his time at the Emirates.

Cast your mind back last season and Arsenal fans will remember Kevin Phillips’ stoppage time equaliser at St Andrews where Almunia’s error was a source for immense frustration, blowing Arsenal’s title challenge of course.

His understudy Lukas Fabianksi aided Wigan’s late comeback and it is my belief that the lack of trophies and a class goalkeeper are inextricably linked.

Arsenal legend David Seaman has urged the club to recruit a new goalkeeper saying:

“Both Almunia and Fabianski did not end the season well. They both made mistakes in high-profile games that effectively cost them the chance of some silverware.

“It means if the quality of someone like Mark Schwarzer becomes available, then Arsene needs to look at him.

“He is a great player, tried and tested and can make saves that win you games. He is a world-class goalkeeper.”

He is right, a goalkeeper can sometimes rack up points on his own with crucial saves and the right man in the number one shirt could be the difference between a success and another exasperating season in which their defensive incapability detracts away from their beautiful footballing philosophy.

Every cloud has a silver lining for Newcastle

Newcastle United were rocked this week by the news that experienced goalkeeper Steve Harper will be out of action for around three months. Newcastle’s number one suffered the injury at Goodison Park against Everton last weekend and after having to play second fiddle to Shay Given at St James’ Park for over ten years, Harper has confirmed his status as one of the unluckiest men in English football. But they say that every cloud has a silver lining and Newcastle have that in Tim Krul.

Just like Harper, Krul has waited patiently for his chance at Newcastle and it now looks like he’s finally going to get it. The 22 year old signed for Newcastle back in 2006 and since then his first team opportunities have been limited to the odd game here and there. When he has stepped into the breach, the Dutch U21 goalkeeper has been highly impressive. He has already experienced European football, having performed admirably at Palermo in the UEFA Cup and is a regular in The Netherlands’ youth setup. So can Krul show that the loss of Harper needn’t be the end of the world for Newcastle?

Krul has a major challenge ahead of him this afternoon in the shape of Stoke and the aerial bombardment they will test him with, both with long throws from Rory Delap and crosses aimed at Kenwyne Jones. If Krul can come through it then it will stand him in good stead and give him the confidence to become a Premier League regular. He may have conceded five goals in his two Carling Cup games so far this season, but that isn’t really representative of his performances in either match. Krul has the potential to be a top class keeper and Harper might just find it difficult to win his place back in 2011…

A real Hammer Blow at Upton Park

The news coming out of the Boleyn Ground this week that midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger is out for a minimum of four months with a thigh injury will come as a bitter blow to the side languishing at the bottom of the Premier League with 6 points from their first 8 games.

The Germany midfielder, 28, was Avram Grant’s first signing as West Ham manager and appeared to be integral to Grant’s plans for the club, featuring heavily in an impressive unbeaten pre-season for the Hammers, even notching a goal with a trademark free-kick against Panathanikos.

But having been left out of Joachim Löw’s World Cup squad, Hitzlsperger was recalled by Germany in early August to face Denmark in an international friendly where, as captain, he sustained a thigh muscle injury in the 2-2 draw which kept him out of the early stages of the Premier League season. Having worked hard to get back to fitness, Hitzlsperger was confident of facing Wolves in the bottom-of-the-table clash at Molineux on Saturday, but suffered a reoccurrence of the thigh injury in training and optimistic estimates see him returning to first team action in early 2011.

Although on a five match unbeaten streak in all competitions, the east London outfit remain bottom of the league, and this prolonged absence of what could have been a key member of the starting eleven will not aid matters. In a midfield saturated with players prone to long term injuries, such as Luis Boa Morte, Scott Parker, Kieron Dyer and Valon Behrami, West Ham can ill-afford another lengthy absentee from the midfield to join Jack Collison and Junior Stanislas on the treatment table.

Hitzlsperger, signed from Lazio on a free transfer in the summer, has appeared over 50 times for his country, including one in the final of the European Championships in 2008 against Spain, and has a Bundesliga title to his name. This kind of experience could yet prove vital towards the end of the season for a West Ham side whose principal priority is survival, but for now the Hammers will have to do without ‘Der Hammer’ and hope that fatigue and injuries are kind to them over the winter months. If not, as the nights close in and the temperature drops, it may be a long winter of discontent in east London before they can call upon their talismanic German midfielder to steady the ship.
