Trying to understand Arsenal’s problems

What was frustrating about the defeat against Bolton, was the unerring predictability of the defeat. Even Arsene had to admit that if we finish third then it will be an unsatisfactory season.  He conceded that this was one of the easiest run ins that his team has had to face for many seasons. Yet because of a lack of maturity and experience we took only 2 points out of a possible 9 to see our hopes of winning the Premiership destroyed. There was no real pressure in evidence. These players are paid an obscene amount of money to deliver, and barely a handful do, and this is why Arsenal fail and will continue to do so until things change. The attitude of our Manager in his almost papal infallibility is evidenced by his response to a question about whether he would consider moving away from his beliefs and principles to change the situation for Arsenal?  He replied thus…

“If you can convince me that the principles are wrong then I am ready”

But the truth is there is no one around him that is willing to challenge him or convince him. He went on further to say

“ Something is wrong in our team, It’s not the principles that are wrong… There is something wrong defensively…”

HELLO???

Arsene, I am heartily sick of repeating this mantra.

“Success begins at the back!”

I can no longer defend Arsene Wenger. But be clear, I am not calling for him to go, but to be frank, I am so frustrated and angry that next season will be my last at the Emirates, if nothing changes, then I will join the legion of divided and disillusioned  Arsenal fans and support this club from afar. For enough is enough. I have patience but I am losing respect for a culture that refuses to allow an alternative credo to surface. My reasoning is simple, if the Manager ergo “The Club ” is not willing to invest in experienced match winning players, then why should I invest in two gold memberships at almost four thousand pounds? He is trying yet again to protect the average squad players who have failed to deliver time after time after time. He has asked us to blame him not the players. He cannot fault the player’s attitudes, and he is at pains to point out that he, Arsene Wenger was responsible for choosing the players.

Yes in that respect Arsene is right. His fingerprints are all over the scene of the crime. The Wenger philosophy is basically

“There is no I in team”

This is an often well worn quote that originated from one of the world’s best coaches of college basketball, John R Wooden was coach of UCLA who between 1963 and 1975 won 10 of the 12 available NCAA Championships. His short quotes inspired players and his principles laid the foundation of good team play. Yet this quote can be seen as the root cause of many of Arsene’s convictions. The team ethic has been taken too far. It is this ethos that now paralyses our players, it creates uncertainty in their minds. The very absence of leaders on the pitch, the failure to be selfish in front of goal and take an obvious chance, and finally the failure to instil a “Die for the cause” mentality in his players is because of the collective team ethos. Arsene knows that confidence in young players is fragile, and to blame players could result in those players failing to achieve their potential.

[ad_pod id=’unruly’ align=’right’]

The problem at Arsenal, is that we no longer have world class role models for the youth to learn from. They have to learn from each other. From what ex-players have said about Arsene’s technique of communication, basically means that these players will not receive a Ferguson style hairdryer ticking off when they underperform, instead they will be comforted and reassured.  It seems that only the bottles of water in the dug out get to receive Arsene’s real wrath. Goal Keepers apart, Arsene very rarely drops players who repeatedly make mistakes or who fail to deliver. It is this ethos of team responsibility for success or failure that is almost political in it’s application. Arsene’s reliance upon his conviction is what is paralysing our club at the moment. Unless there are changes of personnel around him then this conviction will prove difficult to change.

Where is the the evidence for my assertion?

In 2008, Theo Walcott scored a hatrick for England against Croatia, he became an overnight sensation. There was a clamour for the young man to become the next Thierry Henry, but Arsene’s response was

“For me, it’s important he continues to develop as a team player,”

Next the question of the lack of passionate leaders on the field…

Denilson was quoted as stating that Fabregas was not a natural leader, Arsene Wenger responded

“We have a shared leadership in our team but I believe Fabregas is an outstanding leader, especially when you consider he’s 23 years old, with personality and character, and Van Persie as well.

“I believe what is important in the way we want to play football is that everyone takes responsibility.”

This team ethos is laudable but has it gone too far? There is the sharing of wealth too, just look at our wage bill for a start. But how many £30 million  players do we possess. To warrant the third highest wage bill in the premier league? Again Arsene’s obsession with making sure that there is no “I” in team. We all get paid handsomely, so where is the desire or aspiration to get a high wage by good performances, if you can receive a king’s ransom for just sitting on the bench? I argue that too many ordinary players are overpaid, and this will present a barrier to bringing in established players. Something that Stan Kroenke and Ivan Gazidis should have the balls to address. We have 18 players out on loan, but I bet that we are paying the majority of their wages as the sums will be probably too high for Championship Clubs to afford.

At the start of the season Arsene Wenger failed to buy a new Keeper, leading to uncertainty in his back four. Squillaci was never ever going to be a top draw centre back, and the loss of Vermaelen exposed Wenger’s gamble. We have continued to let in set pieces and this has been the case for at least three seasons, but do we see a change in our defensive tactics and application of these fundamental BASIC training ground skills by the players? When in front of goal with a chance to score, players will instinctively look to pass to the player next to them, again searching for team goals. Even Arsene Wenger’s attacking philosophy is under strain. The absence of a 30 goals a season striker to replace Thierry Henry, and the chance in formation to 4-3-3 means that we employ a team approach to scoring goals. Robin van Persie apart, there appears to be no other potent striker anywhere in our club.

We need a number two keeper, an experienced centre back, a Song replacement, and a proven goal scorer. But already before the season has ended Arsene has ruled out any major changes to his personnel. I would love to see Arsenal buy the likes of Cahill and Scott Parker, who would instil the fighting qualities that we so badly need. We are not very far from reaching the top, but what again is very frustrating, is the refusal to make those buys. I don’t want to hear about the transfer targets that we failed in getting, it obvious for all to see that this squad needs a clear out and fresh new hungry blood brought in, but if we don’t point fingers and allocate blame, then that is tantamount to saying that really nothing much will change. If we fail to make those changes then let us be clear, Arsene Wenger will never win the Premiership again let alone the Champions League for our rivals will continue to strengthen their squads.

So where am I on the page? As I said at the beginning, I can no longer defend Arsene Wenger, but neither will I join the ranks of those calling for his head. Arsene Wenger has earned the right to decide his own fate after what he has done for our club. But clearly someone close to Arsene needs to challenge his current approach. We need new defensive coaching staff, we need new experienced players to strengthen our squad, and if Arsene Wenger does decide to go in two seasons time we need ?Pep Guardiola! But let us hope that I am wrong, yet I fear that his refusal to change will lead to a tarnishing of his legacy, which would be a great pity after all that he has done for Arsenal Football Club.

Are Arsenal star’s moans really vindicated?

Arsene Wenger has lavished gifts upon Arsenal during his time as manager, his pretensions for the beautiful manner in which his side play football are a delight for the purist – but no longer can he use this as a shield to protect him from the critics, who cite their defensive frailty as the sole reason for an empty trophy cabinet in recent years.

On their day, Arsenal are a spectacular sight but as we have seen, when confronted by a physical presence they wilt and this must be eradicated if they are to mount a serious title challenge. Wenger has added Laurent Koscielny to his back line in order to sure things up and a bid for France international centre-back Sebastien Squillaci leaves only one final cure: a top-class goalkeeper.

Whilst the rumours continue to rumble on, current goalkeeper Manuel Almunia is in despair as a dark cloud begins to surface over his Arsenal future. But can the Spaniard really complain? For any despair endured by him should the club seal of a deal for Mark Schwarzer or Shay Given is similar to what the Emirates faithful feel when he is in goal.

Stats unfortunately offer brutal reality and Almunia was 17th in saves per shot at 87.8% last season and if, for instance, Almunia had the same save % as Van der Sar at 94.1% (5.9% allowed) then Arsenal’s league position may have benefited greatly.

Although this is perhaps not a solid base to construct an argument that Arsenal are desperate for a new goalkeeper, couple them with the high-profile errors that have dogged his time at the Emirates.

Cast your mind back last season and Arsenal fans will remember Kevin Phillips’ stoppage time equaliser at St Andrews where Almunia’s error was a source for immense frustration, blowing Arsenal’s title challenge of course.

His understudy Lukas Fabianksi aided Wigan’s late comeback and it is my belief that the lack of trophies and a class goalkeeper are inextricably linked.

Arsenal legend David Seaman has urged the club to recruit a new goalkeeper saying:

“Both Almunia and Fabianski did not end the season well. They both made mistakes in high-profile games that effectively cost them the chance of some silverware.

“It means if the quality of someone like Mark Schwarzer becomes available, then Arsene needs to look at him.

“He is a great player, tried and tested and can make saves that win you games. He is a world-class goalkeeper.”

He is right, a goalkeeper can sometimes rack up points on his own with crucial saves and the right man in the number one shirt could be the difference between a success and another exasperating season in which their defensive incapability detracts away from their beautiful footballing philosophy.

West Bromwich Albion v Everton – Match Preview

West Brom know they could move into the Premier League top half with victory over Everton after ending 2011 unbeaten in three games.

Roy Hodgson’s side became the first to stop league leaders Manchester City from scoring this season making it seven points from a possible nine in the last three games. Victories on the road against Blackburn and Newcastle eased the pressure building on Hodgson’s shoulders after a run of one win in six saw the Baggies slide perilously close to the drop zone. However the return of Peter Odemwingie from a knee injury to partner Shane Long up front has been a godsend with the duo linking up to devastating effect in the latter half of December. Albion supporters will be hoping both players can continue their good form and help their side improve a home record that has seen them win just two of their nine games at the Hawthorns scoring just seven goals in the process.

It will be difficult against an Everton side who are unbeaten in their last three and are right back in the hunt for a top seven charge in the New Year. A slow start to the season saw the Toffee’s moved to within inches of the bottom three and a run of one win in six games. However their form and performances have improved considerably since the end of October losing just two of their last seven and putting a six-point buffer between themselves and the relegation zone. The form of Leon Osman has been a particular highlight during the last two months whilst captain Phil Jagielka has tightened up the back four. Scoring goals remains a big problem with David Moyes’ men hitting the net just 18 times in their 17 games this season and that will need to be addressed in 2012 if the club are to achieve their goals.

West Bromwich Albion 11th : 22 points

Team news: Jonas Olsson looks likely to miss the game after picking up a knock whilst Steven Reid and Youssuf Mulumbu are also out.

Key Player: Shane Long

It’s been a marvellous year for Long who scored goal after goal for Reading before his move to the Hawthorns. The striker has become a key figure for Albion and he’ll be looking to start 2012 with a goal against Everton.

Everton 12th : 21 points

Team news: Everton are without three key players with Royston Drenthe, Seamus Coleman and Marouane Fellaini all absent from their trip to the Midlands.

Key Player: Phil Jagielka

The Everton skipper has been a tower of consistency this season and wll be vital to keeping Shane Long and Peter Odemwingie at bay. Jagielka will be hoping to maintain his solid form with Euro 2012 just around the corner.

West Brom struggle at home but have ended 2011 in tremendous form will need to start winning at the Hawthorns in the New Year if they are to finish in the top half. Everton are also on a good run after going three unbeaten and travel to the Midlands a point and a place behind the Baggies.

Score: 1-1

Fulham desperate to keep Mark Schwarzer

Fulham boss Mark Hughes insists that goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is going nowhere, after the player made it known that he would to join Arsenal.

The 37-year-old Australia international is reported to be a top target for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who is keen to bring in an experienced keeper to help out Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski.

However, Hughes told reporters:"From our point of view the situation has not changed. There was interest from Arsenal in May.

"Their bid was refused. We have not had any more bids and we wouldn't encourage any.

"Mark sees it as an opportunity with the current stage that he is at in his career. I can appreciate that, but he has to understand that we have to protect Fulham too.

"At the moment it wouldn't be right for Fulham football club.

"He is an outstanding goalkeeper. It's only when you work with players that you realise how good they are.

"It would be difficult to replace him. It's difficult to get the right quality into your football club. We have a top-class keeper in our squad and we would like to keep him."

Schwarzer had earlier said:"Who wouldn't be keen to go to Arsenal?

Wenger faces competition from Schalke for German hitman

Schalke have joined Arsenal in the race to sign Koln striker Lukas Podolski as they look for a long term replacement for veteran forward Raul according to talkSPORT.

Arsene Wenger had recently sent scouts to watch the in-form German striker who has scored 11 goals in 13 league games so far this season. Wenger’s need to add a striker to the squad is evident as Marouane Chamakh and Park Chu-Young can’t find any sort of form and Niclas Bendtner is happy on loan at Sunderland.

Robin Van Persie has been the main man this season at the Emirates but the Gunners will not be able to rely on him throughout the second half of the season and will look for a January deal for Podolski.

Podolski is set to leave Koln in January but he has confirmed that he has not yet spoken to Arsenal and that there are other interested parties. The Polish born striker has scored 43 goals for Germany and will look to continue that at Euro 2012 but should be playing for a different club before that tournament comes around.

Raul’s contract expires next summer and it is widely expected that this could be his last season playing in Europe.  Arsenal may have to outbid their German rivals for the striker’s signature but Wenger is definitely interested and a deal could be confirmed sooner rather than later.

No bad blood with Bilic, insists Blanc

France manager Laurent Blanc has dismissed talk of a row with Croatian counterpart Slaven Bilic ahead of this week’s friendly international.Les Bleus host Bilic’s side at the Stade de France on Tuesday with much of the build-up focused on the supposed bad blood between the managers.

The two clashed as players in the 1998 World Cup semi-final, with Blanc receiving a red card following a tussle with Bilic, which resulted in the Frenchman missing the final.

Bilic was widely criticised for play –acting during the incident, but Blanc insists that he bears no grudge against the Croatian manager.

“I’ve always told you and I repeat, there is no problem between him and me,” Blanc said.

“I saw that he said that it was me who was responsible for what happened in 1998, that it was my fault, and he is right.”

“This will not be a special moment for me and I’ll shake his hand without any ulterior motive.”

Speaking ahead of the friendly in Paris, Blanc also promised to mix his side up after their 2-0 Euro 2012 qualifying win in Luxembourg on Friday.

“I’ve always said it and I repeat it, the starting eleven against Croatia will be different from the one that played in Luxembourg,” Blanc said.

“Knowing that this is a friendly match, we will have the opportunity to make six changes. It is something to be included in discussions.”

“I think if it goes as planned, we will ensure that virtually all players have participated in one of the two games.”

Major Billy Clarke blow for Blackpool

Blackpool striker Billy Clarke looks set to miss the entire season following knee ligament surgery.

Clarke, 22, injured his knee during the Seasiders' opening pre-season friendly against Tiverton Town earlier this month.

Initial estimates put his recovery time at about three months, but manager Ian Holloway has now revealed the injury is worse than was first feared.

Clarke underwent surgery on a ruptured cruciate ligament last week and could now miss the entire new Premier League campaign.

"It might be the whole season now," Holloway told the club's official website.

"He was looking so sharp in training and had done so much in the summer to try and get over the knocks he had last year.

Meanwhile, fellow striker Louis Almond is also set to miss three months of the new campaign after dislocating his shoulder.Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Drogba misses Genk trip

Chelsea boss Andre Villas Boas has confirmed that Didier Drogba and Jon Obi Mikel have not travelled with the squad to Belgium to take on Genk in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Ivory Coast international has been left back in London and will undergo surgery to removed screws from the arm he broke last year in the build up to the World Cup.

“We took the risk based on his domestic suspension and the forthcoming international break to remove six of the eight screws from his arm,” the Portuguese coach told reporters at a press conference.

“So he’s out of this game and the Blackburn game, and should be ready to return for the team when the others go away for international fixtures,” Villas Boas confirmed.

The ex-Porto trainer also stated that Mikel was being rested for the trip, and maintained that The Blues were on track despite consecutive league defeats.

“There’s always a learning curve in winning and in losing,” he continued.

“I think you have to be frank and say that our progress was stopped in a disastrous week for us in terms of results. But you cannot say it’s all gone to ruins. That’s not true.

“There is, of course, back-to-back defeats in the Premier League, which take their toll in terms of the league table.

“But that doesn’t mean that what’s being built is wrong, that the philosophy is wrong, and that we’re not on the right track. We are on the right track. What we are building is still right.

“We have been punished in the last week in terms of the results, but it’s up to us to take on the challenge.

“We represent a massive club and we’re not running away from the mistakes, but we have to move on,” he concluded.

Scunthorpe sack Baraclough

Ian Baraclough has been sacked as manager of Championship club Scunthorpe after just seven months in charge.Baraclough, 40, took over the role following the departure of Nigel Adkins to Southampton in September 2010.His removal comes after a run of five defeats in the last six matches, one that has left the club inside the relegation zone and four points adrift of safety. Their latest reverse was a 3-0 defeat at home to fellow relegation candidates Preston North End. “Scunthorpe United Football Club has relieved Ian Baraclough of his first team duties with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement.”The difficult decision was reached in light of the team’s disappointing performances.”Assistants Steve Parkin and Kevin Pressman have also left the club.Head youth coach Tony Daws will take charge of the team for Saturday’s match away to Ipswich Town. He will be assisted by chief scout Lee Turnbull.Baraclough spent four years with Scunthorpe as a defender between 2004 and 2008. Adkins appointed Baraclough as first-team coach in 2006, a position he combined with his playing duties.Former Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws has already been linked with a return to Glanford Park. The 50-year-old spent nine years as Scunthorpe manager between 1997 and 2006, guiding the club to two promotions. He is without a club after being sacked as Burnley manager in December, but Scunthorpe chairman Steve Wharton moved immediately to play down the reports. “Brian is still a very good friend of mine – but I would not use that friendship to try and encourage him to be interested in the job,” Wharton said.”Brian has served this club very well in the past but it is always dangerous to consider returning to old ground too many times.”
