204 for 2 – A befitting reply by England

England were well on their way to giving more than a befitting reply to Pakistan’s impressive total of 403, when play was abandoned for the day for rain. On 204 for 2 with Graham Thorpe (98) and Michael Vaughan (84) going great guns, punishing the Pakistan bowlers and piling up runs at a pace that could only be termed, fast and fluid. The 2nd day scene was almost identical to the 1st day. Like Pakistan’s start, England also lost two quick wickets then stemmed the rot and built-up a sizeable total to neutralize Pakistan’s superiority. England, however, had the upper hand for losing fewer wickets. Pakistan’s bowling was not very effective due mainly to the flat wicket. A victory in the match being crucial for Pakistan the bowlers shall have to put up a more concerted effort to achieve an early breakthrough on Day-3.Earlier, Pakistan started briskly scoring 33 runs in 30 minutes before they were out for a challenging total of 403. Rashid Latif, who was perhaps aiming at scoring a century to celebrate his return to test cricket after a lapse of 4 years, was unlucky to be run out after scoring a precious 71. After yesterday’s Inzamam century it was his contribution that provided respectability to Pakistan’s total. Saqlain Mushtaq remained not out with a breezy 21 that included a towering six.England got off to a shocking start, losing the opening pair of Marcus Trescothick and Mike Atherton with only 15 runs on the board, the attacking pair of Wasim and Waqar got one scalp each. Thorpe and Vaughan, put their heads down and brought some smiles on the depressed faces of the crowd by hitting a flurry of thrilling shots. The pair took the total to 50 in 13 overs, going from strength to strength with every run they had lunch at 79 for 2. The 100 of the innings came in the 27th over and a little later they signalled a 100 run partnership. Thorpe completed his 29th half-century in tests and was followed by Vaughan when the score was 126 for 2.It was excellent defensive batting by the two players. They took no risks but played powerful strokes on loose deliveries. The Pakistan bowlers maintained a good line but lacked penetration. Off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq was introduced an over before lunch but was only able to contain the batsmen, posing no serious threat. The pitch was not providing much assistance to the bowlers. The 5 main bowlers in the Pakistan’s arsenal tried their best but failed to dislodge Thorpe and Vaughan and their partnership crossed the 150 mark in 270 balls. At tea when England was 173 for 2, rain suspended play for about one hour. On resumption, the two batsmen got back into the tempo of scoring runs at a slow and steady pace. Since both of them were heading for centuries they took no risks and presented Pakistan a good example of ‘straight bat play’.There was another interruption for rain when England was at 204 for 2. Thorpe (98) and Vaughan (84) firmly holding the crease. The shower being heavy this time, the game was abandoned for the day.

Sunderland heading for Ross Stewart disaster

Sunderland must do all that they can to keep Ross Stewart at the club in the summer.

What’s the word?

The Scottish striker is the Black Cats’ top scorer this season and has been vital in their push to get promoted scoring 22 goals and assisting four in 44 appearances.

He also leads the race for the Golden Boot in League One so it’s likely that come next season he will want to be playing at a higher level.

There has been interest from a number of clubs in the Championship as well as Premier League relegation strugglers Norwich City.

Striker problems

Sunderland are ‘down to the bare bones’ when it comes to their firepower up front, with Jermain Defoe recently announcing his immediate retirement having only joined the club back in January.

Former star striker Kevin Phillips has urged manager Alex Neil to wrap Stewart “in cotton wool” because an injury to him between now and the end of the season could be disastrous.

But it’s beyond then that the Black Cats should be worrying about, if they fail to get promoted it makes it even more likely they’ll lose their £2.7k-per-week star man and he would be difficult to replace.

As well as his great goal scoring record he has also proved to be reliable having tallied the most minutes on the pitch out of all the forwards in the whole of League One with 3,544.

The 25-year old also isn’t afraid to track back, he ranks inside the top ten for aerial duals won averaging 5.6 per game which includes when defending set-pieces.

Sunderland must try their hardest to keep Stewart at the Stadium of Light but he could be tempted by Premier League strugglers Norwich.

The Canaries may get relegated, but even so, they would still be one of the top sides in the Championship as history shows.

Stewart is under contract for another season so Norwich would surely have to pay the £450k he is worth according to Transfermarkt. However, they may be able to bargain with the Black Cats who won’t want to risk losing their star man for nothing when his contract eventually does expire.

Ultimately Stewart is showing form that suggests he is too good to be playing in League One, it’s just whether he’ll be playing in a higher division with or without Sunderland. If it’s the latter, it will surely come as a disaster.

After all, in the words of Ross County chief executive Steven Ferguson, he is “a dream for any manager.”

Wenger faces competition from Schalke for German hitman

Schalke have joined Arsenal in the race to sign Koln striker Lukas Podolski as they look for a long term replacement for veteran forward Raul according to talkSPORT.

Arsene Wenger had recently sent scouts to watch the in-form German striker who has scored 11 goals in 13 league games so far this season. Wenger’s need to add a striker to the squad is evident as Marouane Chamakh and Park Chu-Young can’t find any sort of form and Niclas Bendtner is happy on loan at Sunderland.

Robin Van Persie has been the main man this season at the Emirates but the Gunners will not be able to rely on him throughout the second half of the season and will look for a January deal for Podolski.

Podolski is set to leave Koln in January but he has confirmed that he has not yet spoken to Arsenal and that there are other interested parties. The Polish born striker has scored 43 goals for Germany and will look to continue that at Euro 2012 but should be playing for a different club before that tournament comes around.

Raul’s contract expires next summer and it is widely expected that this could be his last season playing in Europe.  Arsenal may have to outbid their German rivals for the striker’s signature but Wenger is definitely interested and a deal could be confirmed sooner rather than later.

No bad blood with Bilic, insists Blanc

France manager Laurent Blanc has dismissed talk of a row with Croatian counterpart Slaven Bilic ahead of this week’s friendly international.Les Bleus host Bilic’s side at the Stade de France on Tuesday with much of the build-up focused on the supposed bad blood between the managers.

The two clashed as players in the 1998 World Cup semi-final, with Blanc receiving a red card following a tussle with Bilic, which resulted in the Frenchman missing the final.

Bilic was widely criticised for play –acting during the incident, but Blanc insists that he bears no grudge against the Croatian manager.

“I’ve always told you and I repeat, there is no problem between him and me,” Blanc said.

“I saw that he said that it was me who was responsible for what happened in 1998, that it was my fault, and he is right.”

“This will not be a special moment for me and I’ll shake his hand without any ulterior motive.”

Speaking ahead of the friendly in Paris, Blanc also promised to mix his side up after their 2-0 Euro 2012 qualifying win in Luxembourg on Friday.

“I’ve always said it and I repeat it, the starting eleven against Croatia will be different from the one that played in Luxembourg,” Blanc said.

“Knowing that this is a friendly match, we will have the opportunity to make six changes. It is something to be included in discussions.”

“I think if it goes as planned, we will ensure that virtually all players have participated in one of the two games.”

Major Billy Clarke blow for Blackpool

Blackpool striker Billy Clarke looks set to miss the entire season following knee ligament surgery.

Clarke, 22, injured his knee during the Seasiders' opening pre-season friendly against Tiverton Town earlier this month.

Initial estimates put his recovery time at about three months, but manager Ian Holloway has now revealed the injury is worse than was first feared.

Clarke underwent surgery on a ruptured cruciate ligament last week and could now miss the entire new Premier League campaign.

"It might be the whole season now," Holloway told the club's official website.

"He was looking so sharp in training and had done so much in the summer to try and get over the knocks he had last year.

"We're all gutted for him, absolutely gutted for him."

Meanwhile, fellow striker Louis Almond is also set to miss three months of the new campaign after dislocating his shoulder.Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Drogba misses Genk trip

Chelsea boss Andre Villas Boas has confirmed that Didier Drogba and Jon Obi Mikel have not travelled with the squad to Belgium to take on Genk in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Ivory Coast international has been left back in London and will undergo surgery to removed screws from the arm he broke last year in the build up to the World Cup.

“We took the risk based on his domestic suspension and the forthcoming international break to remove six of the eight screws from his arm,” the Portuguese coach told reporters at a press conference.

“So he’s out of this game and the Blackburn game, and should be ready to return for the team when the others go away for international fixtures,” Villas Boas confirmed.

The ex-Porto trainer also stated that Mikel was being rested for the trip, and maintained that The Blues were on track despite consecutive league defeats.

“There’s always a learning curve in winning and in losing,” he continued.

“I think you have to be frank and say that our progress was stopped in a disastrous week for us in terms of results. But you cannot say it’s all gone to ruins. That’s not true.

“There is, of course, back-to-back defeats in the Premier League, which take their toll in terms of the league table.

“But that doesn’t mean that what’s being built is wrong, that the philosophy is wrong, and that we’re not on the right track. We are on the right track. What we are building is still right.

“We have been punished in the last week in terms of the results, but it’s up to us to take on the challenge.

“We represent a massive club and we’re not running away from the mistakes, but we have to move on,” he concluded.

Scunthorpe sack Baraclough

Ian Baraclough has been sacked as manager of Championship club Scunthorpe after just seven months in charge.Baraclough, 40, took over the role following the departure of Nigel Adkins to Southampton in September 2010.His removal comes after a run of five defeats in the last six matches, one that has left the club inside the relegation zone and four points adrift of safety. Their latest reverse was a 3-0 defeat at home to fellow relegation candidates Preston North End. “Scunthorpe United Football Club has relieved Ian Baraclough of his first team duties with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement.”The difficult decision was reached in light of the team’s disappointing performances.”Assistants Steve Parkin and Kevin Pressman have also left the club.Head youth coach Tony Daws will take charge of the team for Saturday’s match away to Ipswich Town. He will be assisted by chief scout Lee Turnbull.Baraclough spent four years with Scunthorpe as a defender between 2004 and 2008. Adkins appointed Baraclough as first-team coach in 2006, a position he combined with his playing duties.Former Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws has already been linked with a return to Glanford Park. The 50-year-old spent nine years as Scunthorpe manager between 1997 and 2006, guiding the club to two promotions. He is without a club after being sacked as Burnley manager in December, but Scunthorpe chairman Steve Wharton moved immediately to play down the reports. “Brian is still a very good friend of mine – but I would not use that friendship to try and encourage him to be interested in the job,” Wharton said.”Brian has served this club very well in the past but it is always dangerous to consider returning to old ground too many times.”

Donovan opens the door to Everton return

Former Everton loanee Landon Donovan has opened the door to a possible return to Goodison Park, despite Major League Soccer being keen to keep him in his homeland.

The 28-year-old USA international is currently with the LA Galaxy, but has hinted at a move back to Europe, having scored twice in 13 appearances during a loan spell with the Toffees last season.

He told the Daily Mirror: “I would love to go back to Everton. I love the people there and I love the fans there.

“But that said, I love being in America too, so we are going to take everything into account and see where it ends up.

“Anything is possible at this stage and I’m going to make the decision that’s best for me. We hear little bits and pieces here and there and there have certainly been clubs that are interested, but right now, it’s only preliminary.

“There’s still a lot of time left in the transfer window, so we’ll see what moves are made and, if it’s serious, then we’ll treat it seriously.”

Redknapp would take Carlos Tevez

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has admitted that he would be happy to bring Carlos Tevez to White Hart Lane on a loan deal, should the opportunity arise in January.

The Argentina international’s time at the Etihad Stadium looks all but finished after he refused to come off the bench for Roberto Mancini’s team against Bayern Munich in the Champions League back in September.

With a January departure from the Premier League leaders looking likely, Redknapp has stated that despite the attacker’s off-the-field problems, he would love to have him in North London.

“I would take him if he were available for sure, warts and all. Who wouldn’t?” he told The Daily Mail.

“If Manchester City want to let me have him on loan and massively subsidise it, I’ll take him tomorrow.

“Say what you like, but he’s a world-class player and you can’t say he doesn’t work his socks off when he plays. When he gets on the field he’s a right handful.

“It’s all right people refusing to condone his behaviour but, to be honest, I’m only interested in what he does when he plays. And world-class players are in short supply,” he concluded.

The likelihood of Tevez moving to Spurs is low, as City look to sell their wantaway forward in the new year rather than send him out on loan.

Is he really the best player in the Premier League?

It’s a question that you will have debated with your mates down the pub on many occasions, who is the best player in the Premier League? English football is home to many fantastic players, both English and foreign, but who is the cream of the crop?

In the Football Fans Survey 2011 carried out here on FootballFanCast.com, we opened that question up to you and gave you plenty of choice. Manchester United’s Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes all made the list of nominees, as did Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Rafael van der Vaart from Tottenham, Arsenal’s Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea’s Frank Lampard and Carlos Tevez of Manchester City, but it was a Liverpool star who took the crown.

Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard won more than one fifth of the vote and beat Fabregas, Tevez, Bale and Nasri into 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th place respectively. The Liverpool captain is undoubtedly a top performer and has been one of the best players in English football for a decade, often dragging the Reds up the Premier League table almost single-handedly.

It is interesting that an Englishman won the vote, while the age-old debate about Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard is firmly put to bed here – sorry Frank! With Kenny Dalglish back in charge at Anfield, will Gerrard be tasting some more success in the coming years and is he really the best Premier League player? Have your say…
