Gers could move for Gilmour

According to The Scottish Sun, Billy Gilmour is considering a loan exit away from Chelsea this summer, and The Daily Record has suggested Glasgow Rangers could be a potential destination for him.

The Lowdown: Gers prepare for new campaign

The Gers enjoyed a magnificent campaign last term, winning the Premiership title without losing a single league match (BBC).

As such, the Gers have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League group stages this term. They will need to bring in new players this summer though to deal with the gruelling task of task of competing in such elite competition alongside their domestic pursuits.

The Latest: Gilmour on the radar

It is now being reported that Gilmour will push for a loan move away from Chelsea as he looks to earn more first-team minutes.

The Daily Record have suggested the Gers could be in line to sign him, along with Brentford, West Ham, Swansea and Vitesse Arnhem.

The Verdict: Beyond the Gers reach

In an ideal world, Steven Gerrard would surely love to add £9m-valued Gilmour (Transfermarkt) to his side. The 20-year-old was part of a squad that won the Champions League last month, and he made 11 appearances in all competitions for the Blues across the season (Transfermarkt).

He has also earned a call-up to the Scotland squad for the European Championships, while Roy Keane even labelled him “world-class” in the past.

Unfortunately, all of this probably means Gilmour will move to a Premier League side next term as he aims to test his abilities at the highest level. If the Gers do make the Champions League group stage, that could be enough to convince Gilmour, but there are no guarantees right now.

In other news, Gers have been urged to sign this young Dutchman.

Aston Villa: Gerrard wants Olsen

Aston Villa are on course to seal the permanent signing of goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

What’s the Word?

That’s according to Football Insider, who claim that a source has revealed that Villa are in advanced talks to sign Olsen on a permanent deal from AS Roma – the 32-year-old shot-stopper who has been at the Premier League side on loan since January.

With just over a year left on his Roma contract, Gerrard could secure the services of Olsen on the cheap and he would provide solid cover for Emiliano Martinez next season.

Robin Olsen would provide excellent cover at Villa

During the first half of the campaign, Olsen was plying his trade at Sheffield United in the Championship, turning out 17 times for the Blades whilst only keeping one clean sheet.

This didn’t stop player John Egan from boosting the £13k-per-week keeper’s confidence, stating in the media that the Swede had a “big presence” and that they “were lucky to have him”.

Massive praise for someone who often let in too many goals during his tenure in the Championship. However, his international experience plus his age could well prove to make him a huge coup for Gerrard and Johan Lange.

Despite not making a first-team appearance for the side since his arrival, he has obviously impressed Steven Gerrard and the coaching staff. The Swede does have prior experience in the top flight, however, featuring for Everton on 11 occasions in the 2020-2021 season.

With further progress needed to show the board that he is moving in the right direction; Gerrard will be aiming to utilise his funds carefully and not squander vital cash on poor signings.

European football must be the aim and that is why the board went all out to secure his services from Rangers in November. The former England captain faces a huge summer ahead.

Exclusive: Morelos compared to PL icon

Former Rangers star Michael Ball has told Football FanCast that Alfredo Morelos reminds him of Luis Suarez amid links away from the club.

Morelos has been in fine form again this season and has scored 11 goals in 25 Scottish Premiership games.

Rangers have galloped to the title and sit 23 points clear of second-placed Celtic following their latest Old Firm victory; they have yet to lose a fixture in the league this season.

Morelos has made it clear that he hoped to catch the eye of big clubs across Europe with his displays in the Europa League, per an interview with Colombian radio via The Daily Express, effectively admitting that he is open to a move away from the club.

In total, the Colombia international has scored 93 goals in 179 games for the club since his arrival from HJK Helsinki in 2017.

Ball thinks the forward could well leave the club, given the repeated links with an exit, and he has compared him with Liverpool icon Suarez insofar as his passion for the club can sometimes overwhelm him.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, he said: “I think there’s been talk about Morelos maybe for two or three years now about leaving Rangers for many reasons. His goalscoring is second to none but he’s got that South American bite to him.

“He reminds me of the Suarez situation where, one day he’s fantastic and the next he can let you down because the passion gets too much for him.

“Being part of Rangers, he’s got to know the club so well, he understands it and sometimes passion does get over him.”

Rangers must unleash "unbelievable" gem

Rangers will look to continue their unbeaten start to life under Gio van Bronckhorst as they prepare for Premiership action on Saturday.

The Gers face off against Ross County away from home in a lunchtime kick-off this weekend as they look to maintain or extend their lead at the top of the table, depending on how their Glasgow rivals get on in their match at 3pm.

Scott Arfield scored the only goal of the game as Rangers beat Livingston 1-0 in their last outing on Wednesday night, leaving them on 55 points after 22 games and four points clear of their nearest rivals.

Unleash him

One player who must be unleashed from the start on Saturday is new signing Amad Diallo. The youngster joined on loan from Manchester United this week and Van Bronckhorst has already confirmed that he is available for selection.

He said in Friday morning’s press conference: “Diallo will also be in the squad for tomorrow.

“Diallo is a young player who wants to play games, we are bringing him to our club to add value to our team. Like any other player in the squad, he has to perform to play but I am full of confidence that he will deliver.”

Instead of using him off the bench, the Dutchman must throw him in from the start in order to axe Scott Wright from the starting XI. The ex-Aberdeen man was poor against Livingston as he regularly wasted the ball in the final third, completing 0% of his dribbles and 25% of his attempted crosses.

Diallo coming in could allow Van Bronckhorst to drop Wright for this match against Ross County, with the Ivorian having the potential to be a game-changer for the Gers – that is why he must start.

Former Manchester United winger Dan James previously lauded his then-teammate as “unbelievable”, while Papu Gomez, another who played alongside the 19-year-old, once compared him to a current PSG forward, saying: “There are defenders in the first team that sometimes cannot stop him. To stop him in training, we have to kick him! He plays like Messi.”

This highlights the technical quality of the £28k-per-week Ibrox gem, which is backed up by his exceptional record at youth level. He scored six goals and provided four assists in just five games for United’s under-23s, having managed 37 goals and 24 assists in 96 appearances for Atalanta’s youth teams.

Diallo also scored once and produced one assist in nine first-team matches for the Red Devils, showing promise at the top level. This suggests that he has the potential to come in at Rangers and be a big player for Van Bronckhorst, and that could start with him being named in the starting XI against Ross County on Saturday…

Liverpool: Fans fume at James Pearce’s update on Danny Ings

Liverpool fans are furious at their club’s dealings after reports emerged that they will receive just £2m from Danny Ings’ move from Southampton to Aston Villa.

Ings joined the Saints from Anfield back in 2019, and went on to score 46 goals in 100 appearances for the Premier League side in his two seasons with the club.

That includes 13 goals in 33 appearances in the 2020/21 season, in what was a frustrating campaign as they finished 15th in the Premier League.

The Athletic’s James Pearce has revealed that Liverpool negotiated a 20 per cent sell-on clause when he opted to sign for Southampton, but it’s only 20 per cent of any fee upwards of £20m, which means that the Reds will only get a boost of £2m from the £30m that Aston Villa have paid for his services this summer.

Plenty of Liverpool’s supporters took to social media to voice their frustrations after hearing of this update from The Athletic’s Liverpool correspondent.

Take a look at the best of the reaction from Twitter, as Pearce’s recent update on Liverpool’s sell-on strategy attracted plenty of criticism.

Leeds confident of signing Romain Perraud

Leeds United are reportedly confident of signing Stade Brest defender Romain Perraud this summer, as they look to bring in a new left-back.

The Lowdown: New left-back required

Marcelo Bielsa will likely be eyeing up a number of new signing in the coming months, but left-back is an area that definitely requires an addition.

With Ezgjan Alioski set to move on to pastures new, there are a lack of options there for Leeds, with a host of players linked with a move to Elland Road.

Perraud is one of those players, having impressed in Ligue One this season, scoring three goals and registering seven assists for Brest.

The Latest: Perraud could join Leeds

According to Football Insider, Leeds are ‘confident’ of getting their man in the summer, with a source claiming that “encouraging talks” have taken place.

It is also stated that Bielsa is keen on signing on a midfielder and a striker, in order to bolster his squad.

The Verdict: Ideal addition for Whites

Perraud could be a great signing for Leeds, with his aforementioned quality in the final third likely to appeal to the attack-minded Bielsa.

His seven assists would rank Perraud third in the Whites squad this term, behind only Raphinha and Jack Harrison, with his overall ten goal contributions putting him level with Leeds’ player of the season, Stuart Dallas.

He has also averaged 1.7 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game in the league this season, however, showing that he can excel defensively, too.

At 23, Perraud would also represent a long-term acquisition – someone who could shine at left-back for many years to come, rather than a stop-gap option like the previously linked Patrick van Aanholt, who is 30 years of age.

Wolves fans on Vitinha news

Lots of Wolves fans have been left unhappy after some news regarding the future of Vitinha.

As per Record, the Portugal U21 international has now begun pre-season at FC Porto, casting further doubt over whether the Midlands club will look to sign him on a permanent deal, as their option to buy him for €20m (£17.2m) expired.

Understandably, this has annoyed several members of the Molineux faithful, who have previously called for Vitinha to be signed permanently after he impressed them with some of his performances last term.

The attacking midfield player had the highest pass success percentage (90.3%) out of any of his teammates to have played 10 or more matches in the Premier League in the 2020/21 season (Whoscored), and at just 21 years of age, he likely still has a lot more that he can offer.

LFC fans want to sign Kessie

Liverpool fans want to sign Franck Kessie after the Reds were linked with a move for the AC Milan midfielder.

Over the past few years, 24-year-old Kessie has evolved into one of the best midfielders in Serie A. He started out at Atalanta, where he scored seven goals and provided three assists in 31 appearances for the club (Transfermarkt). That earned him a move to Milan, one of the biggest clubs in the country. He has continued to impress, missing just 10 league matches since making the move in 2017.

However, his contract is set to run out at the end of the season. And, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Reds are prepared to pay the €8m-a-year (£6.8m) contract the Ivory Coast international is looking for.

The news was shared on Twitter by @AnfieldEdition, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on the rumour, with one fan claiming Kessie is ‘perfect’…

Man United fans hammer Lindelof

Flocking to Twitter, many Manchester United fans were less than impressed with the performance of defender Victor Lindelof as their side edged past Atalanta 3-2 on Wednesday evening.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, losing 2-0 just before the half hour mark courtesy of strikes from Mario Pasalic and Merih Demiral, had it all to do on a thoroughly enthralling night of Champions League football.

United’s unlikely fight back started early in the second half when Marcus Rashford fed off Bruno Fernandes’ sumptuous through ball to bury a neat finish into Atalanta’s bottom corner.

As the Red Devils kept knocking, it was an unlikely hero who stepped up next in Harry Maguire, with the England international defender netting a half volley at the back post for 2-2.

In typical Hollywood fashion, there was only one man set to take centre stage for United’s late winner as Cristiano Ronaldo leapt to meet Luke Shaw’s cross with a towering header and the eventual winner.

One man who certainly didn’t take any acclaim, however, was Sweden ace Lindelof – and it is clear to see why going by his numbers.

According to SofaScore, he was United’s second-lowest rated player on the night with a 6.5/10 and won none of his ground duels up against the Serie A side.

Flocking to Twitter, many supporters criticised his performance – find all of their verdicts down below.

Newcastle: Shelvey injury latest revealed

Jonjo Shelvey is facing a ‘battle to be fit’ for the start of the new Premier League season after sustaining an injury in training, according to Lee Ryder.

The lowdown

The 29-year-old was watching on from the stands as Newcastle took on York City in their first pre-season match of the summer on Sunday.

The midfielder started 29 league matches for the Magpies last season, averaging 1.3 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 1.3 clearances, 5.8 accurate long balls and 1.2 key passes per game (via WhoScored).

Last year, Steve Bruce said that Shelvey is a player ‘blessed with natural ability’ and hailed his ‘outstanding’ performances.

He is not the only injury concern for Newcastle, with Joelinton forced off after 15 minutes against York at the weekend.

The latest

Bruce revealed that Shelvey was doing some independent running when he picked up the injury, and that he’d be missing for ‘a while just yet’.

Ryder added that the 29-year-old is a doubt for the season-opening clash against West Ham United on 15 August, tweeting “Jonjo Shelvey facing battle to be fit for start of new season” in accompaniment to his corresponding article for Chronicle Live.

The verdict

It’s been a pretty bruising pre-season already for Newcastle. On top of the Joelinton and Shelvey injuries, Martin Dubravka is set to miss the visit of the Hammers next month with a foot problem (via Daily Mail).

Given that Isaac Hayden is now back from his knee injury, Newcastle should be able to cope if Shelvey doesn’t win his race to be fit for 15 August, by which stage they’ll also hope to have Joe Willock at their disposal.

If the Arsenal man doesn’t return to Tyneside by then, however, Shelvey’s potential absence could be more acutely felt.

In other news, this Newcastle star has been tipped to seek a move away.
