Bunny Shaw for Player of the Season? Women's Super League winners and losers as the title race takes another turn

Manchester City's star striker netted twice in a dramatic win over Brighton, one which puts them level on points with second placed Man Utd

This weekend was a nightmare for Manchester United. Not only did they suffer defeat to league leaders Chelsea, but each of their rivals for the European spots – and the Women's Super League title – also won.

It could end up being a pivotal weekend in the season, such was the drama of Manchester City's late win at Brighton, with there big results at the other end of the table, too.

Bottom club Leicester got a point at home to Everton, Liverpool defeated Tottenham in a battle between two strugglers and Reading suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Arsenal, all while Aston Villa continued to impress in a 2-1 win over West Ham.

So, who were the big winners this gameweek? And for whom did it all go wrong? GOAL takes a look…

  • Getty

    WINNER: Chelsea

After suffering a disappointing defeat in the Continental Cup final last week, all eyes were on Chelsea and on how they would respond as they returned to WSL action.

On Wednesday night, they beat Brighton 3-1 and, seven days after watching Arsenal lift that trophy instead of them, they were victorious on Sunday in a huge game against Manchester United.

Still without key players Fran Kirby and Pernille Harder, the Blues' woes were added to with midfield lynchpin Erin Cuthbert missing due to a tight hamstring and Guro Reiten, who leads the WSL in assists this year, out because of illness.

Yet, they took all three points in a game between the table's top two teams thanks to Sam Kerr's gorgeous finish from Lauren James' wonderful ball.

"Sometimes I feel like other teams get a hall pass for injured players," manager Emma Hayes said after the game. "We’ve been without Fran and Pernille for almost the entirety of the season.

"This team deserves huge credit as a whole. Not just Sam. We’ve kept a clean sheet today after a difficult and underwhelming performance against Arsenal last weekend.”

Two points clear at the top of the table and still with a game in hand – that's how you bounce back.

    LOSER: Manchester United

Chelsea have not lost a home game since February 2021. To go to Kingsmeadow and win is not easy, that much is certain.

Manchester United didn't come close to breaking that streak on Sunday, as they struggled to really test Ann-Katrin Berger in the home goal despite having the lion's share of possession.

That will have frustrated head coach Marc Skinner, his players and the fans of the team alike, no doubt.

But the Red Devils can also feel aggrieved. They had two very strong penalty shouts in this game and they didn't get either of them.

“Two penalties in a game like this are massive," Skinner said afterwards. "Chelsea get a goal that’s offside the other day, so these are decisions that will make and break where you finish in the table – and we say ‘it balances out’. Well, I’m hopeful that we see it.”

To see Man City win at Brighton at the death only a few hours later, before Arsenal then beat Reading in the late kick-off, rounded off United's bad day, with them the only side in the top four not to win.

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Bunny Shaw

Bunny Shaw has to be a Player of the Season contender. In fact, she has to be one of the front-runners.

On Sunday, she scored twice as Man City beat Brighton 2-1, her second coming in the 89th minute, just as it looked like City were going to make the trip back to the north west having lost ground in the title race.

It was Shaw's ninth goal in her last three games. It was the third match-winning goal she's scored in the WSL this season, not including the decisive hat-trick she netted in a recent 3-1 win over Spurs.

Take away her goals this season – which sit her top of the standings in the race for the Golden Boot – and City would lose 13 points, dropping them down to sixth place.

This is not a one-player team by any means. That is not the point being made here. After all, there have been a large handful of standout performers in this City side this season.

But has there been a player in the league who has been more important to their side than Shaw this campaign? Arguably not.

    LOSER: Rehanne Skinner

Two points and two places above the drop zone, the stats don't make for good reading if you're Tottenham Hotspur and their head coach, Rehanne Skinner.

Her team have now lost all of their last nine games in the WSL, four of those without scoring. They've not won a league match since October, and it's a run of form that has put their place in the top flight in serious danger.

On Sunday, they lost a huge game against fellow strugglers Liverpool, who lifted themselves into a much more comfortable position as a result. Skinner bemoaned the Reds' winning goal, claiming that is was "clearly offside", but Spurs didn't trouble Liverpool goalkeeper Rachael Laws enough at all during the game.

The coach appeared calm before this fixture when talking about her position. “Nothing’s changed in terms of what we’re trying to achieve here. It’s a long-term project. That was how it was explained to me before I came into the role," she said.

But the stats are bleak. If there is not pressure on her already, then there could be in a few days' time. On Wednesday, Spurs play bottom-club Leicester, who have improved massively since appointing Willie Kirk in November.

Should Leicester win, they would leapfrog Spurs.

13 fun facts about Lionel Messi

Everything you need to know about the Argentine superstar!

Lionel Messi is one of the most iconic figures in football history. Born in Argentina in 1987, Messi began playing football at a young age and quickly developed a reputation as a prodigious talent.

He joined FC Barcelona's youth academy in 2000 at 13, and just three years later, he made his debut for the first team. In the years that followed, Messi quickly established himself as one of the greatest players of his generation.

He has won numerous individual awards, including a record seven Ballon d'Or trophies, and helped Barcelona win multiple titles, including four Champions League titles and 10 La Liga titles.

Despite his success on the pitch, Messi has faced numerous challenges throughout his career. He was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency as a child, which required expensive treatment and put a strain on his family's finances.

In 2021, he won his first major international trophy, guiding Argentina to a Copa America triumph. He helped his country lift their third World Cup title in Qatar a year later.

Off the pitch, Messi is known for his philanthropic work. He has established the Leo Messi Foundation, which aims to improve the lives of children in need worldwide. He has also been involved in numerous charitable initiatives, including a project to build a children's hospital in his hometown of Rosario, Argentina.

But what are the 13 things you need to know about the attacker?

    A loving grandson

The sight of Messi pointing toward the sky with both hands after scoring a goal is a regular occurrence, but not many people know its meaning. It is, in fact, a tribute to his Grandmother Celia, who Messi credits with sparking his interest in football and supporting him as he took his first steps in the game. Sadly, she passed away in 1998 and never saw him play at the top level, but his iconic celebration ensures that her spirit lives on.

Could have won the World Cup in 2010

Messi has represented Argentina throughout his international career, but he could have been wearing the red of Spain had he accepted an offer to join the national team of the country where he had spent 17 years of his professional career. After spending his childhood in Barcelona, he was eligible to play for the 2010 world champions, but Messi says the idea never crossed his mind. The rest, as they say, is history as he has gone on to become Argentina’s all-time top scorer.

    Idolised an Argentina legend

Many younger players consider Messi a role model, but whom did he idolise growing up? His idol was fellow Argentina and former Valencia and Real Zaragoza playmaker Pablo Aimar. They faced each other in La Liga on several occasions, including one special night in 2004 when Aimar approached the 17-year-old Messi, an unused sub, after the game to offer him his shirt. He still treasures that jersey to this day. Aimar was also part of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning team. He was an assistant to head coach Lionel Scaloni.

  • A nightmare debut for Argentina

Argentina's blue-eyed boy Messi made his international debut on August 17, 2005, in an international friendly match against Hungary at the Puskas Stadium in Budapest. Messi was introduced into the match as a substitute in the second half. He replaced forward Lisandro Lopez in the 64th minute of the match. What was supposed to be a dream debut for the then Barcelona prodigy turned into a nightmare soon as he was sent off, less than a minute after coming on to the pitch.

The team's inconsistent start to the season is evidenced by New York City's 2023 record of two wins, two draws, and two losses.

The 2021 MLS Cup champions defeated Inter Miami and DC United after taking one point from their first two games, but since then, they have only been able to collect one point out of a potential six.

It is worth pointing out that New York City boasts a 100% record on home soil this season, so they will be hopeful of notching a third successive victory at Yankee Stadium.

Atlanta United has only lost one of its six games this season, winning four and drawing one, keeping it within one point of FC Cincinnati at the top of the Eastern Conference.

The Five Stripes began their season with a run of three victories in their first four games, including a stunning 5-1 victory over the Portland Timbers after a 3-0 victory at Charlotte FC. However, Gonzalo Pineda's team was brought crashing back down to Earth as they were beaten 6-1 by the Columbus Crew in Ohio.

Ilkay Gundogan is too good for Man City to let go! Winners & losers as Barcelona transfer target stars once again in easy Everton win

The midfielder is proving instrumental in the title run-in, and after two brilliant strikes against the Toffees, City would be crazy to let him leave

Just when they thought he was out, Ilkay Gundogan pulled himself back into Manchester City's future plans with another virtuoso display. Having downed Leeds United last week with two ruthless strikes, the Germany international showed his true class with a pair of outstanding goals, plus an assist, in the 3-0 win over Everton.

The 32-year-old was City's most inventive player, and while the Premier League leaders were not at their dominant best at a fired-up Goodison Park, Gundogan certainly was. He scored the opener when the Toffees couldn't have sensed any danger, conjuring up a magical flick into the net despite having has back to goal.

His free-kick strike in the second half was another jaw-dropping moment, and City must now be wondering whether they should work harder to try and convince him to sign a new contract. Gundogan was Guardiola's first signing, and after the game the coach again expressed his desire for the player to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium. That could spell bad news for Barcelona, who are hoping to sign him on a free transfer this summer.

Speaking of bad news, Real Madrid will have been disheartened by the fact that City managed to win without exerting themselves too much ahead of Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Goodison Park…

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Ilkay Gundogan

If this is to be Gundogan's last season with City, then this is one hell of a swansong. After netting twice against Leeds last week, he carved open another relegation-threatened side. But this time he had to work much harder, as Everton were fired up by the crowd and playing with a real intensity.

Gundogan prised the Toffees open with a moment of genius, controlling Riyad Mahrez's cross with his thigh then, noticing he had no space to turn, flicked the ball past Jordan Pickford and into the net. The goal left Everton utterly stunned, as no one could have thought he could have scored from such a situation, with his back to goal and deprived of space.

Moments later, he teed up Erling Haaland with a perfectly-weighted cross. Even before his goal and assist, he was City's most active player, dovetailing with Phil Foden down the left and constantly probing Everton's defence. City will sure miss him when he's gone, whether that is next season or two or three years down the line.

  • LOSER: Barcelona

The Catalans have shown a lot of interest in signing Gundogan, and since their financial crisis began to bite they have made a habit of trying to sign players whose contracts are about to run out, such as Marcos Alonso, Andreas Christensen, Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay.

But the midfielder's latest performances might make City think twice about letting such a crucial player go, and instead offer him an improved contract at the end of the season, when his deal expires. Guardiola certainly has not given up convincing Gundogan to stay, and after the match he dismissed suggestions that the player is certain to leave.

"No one knows what will happen, maybe he stays. Hopefully," said the coach, who only last week had also expressed his desire for Gundogan to remain at the club.

Gundogan owns a house in Barcelona and a move to the Catalans is believed to be motivated by lifestyle choices as much as footballing ones. But City would be crazy to let such a valuable and versatile player leave for free, and if it comes down to who can make Gundogan the better offer, they will surely beat the cash-strapped Catalans.

  • Getty

    WINNER: Erling Haaland

After seeing off Alan Shearer and Andy Cole's Premier League scoring record for a single season, the only player to have scored more goals than the Norwegian in an English top-flight campaign is Dixie Dean. A statue of the former Everton striker, who scored 60 goals in the 1927-28 season, greets visitors to Goodison Park.

Comparisons between Haaland and Dean have been rife in the media and on social media in the last week, and whilst it is a highly amusing debate, it is an ultimately absurd one. Dean played almost a century ago in a completely different era to the one Haaland is in, when the ball was heavier, pitches were muddier, challenges far meatier and players could not be substituted if they got injured.

But one thing the players share is an insatiable lust for scoring. And after failing to score against Leeds and Real Madrid, which amounts to a goal drought by the Norwegian's insane standards, he was back amongst the goals here.

When he produced a monstrous jump to head in Gundogan's cross, it was only his third touch of the game. We'll never know who was the better striker, but we can all agree that Haaland is one of a kind, and if not the best striker to have ever played in England, then certainly the best of the 21st century.

    LOSER: Real Madrid

City had to prepare for this game while still thinking about their semi-final second leg against Real Madrid and were forced to play on Sunday due to the Eurovision Song Contest taking place in Liverpool, giving them one day's fewer rest than Carlo Ancelotti's side, who beat Getafe 1-0 on Saturday.

Unlike City, Los Blancos do not have a title race to worry about, and Ancelotti was able to make eight changes against Getafe. But any advantage Real might have felt they had due to their contrasting domestic situations was minimal.

Guardiola managed to leave key players like Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones on the bench, while only introducing Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva for the final 12 minutes. And he was able to take Haaland and Gundogan off early, too.

Gundogan and Haaland's goals in quick succession in the first half allowed City to take their foot gently off the gas while remaining in control of the game and still winning comfortably. While they would have preferred the extra day's rest, the fact that they are in a title race should not harm their chances on Wednesday.

If anything, they will feel extra motivated by the prospect of winning the treble.

England player ratings vs Australia: Ollie Watkins and Jack Grealish have key roles to play at Euro 2024! Three Lions back-ups make claims for minutes in Germany this summer

The Aston Villa striker got the breakthrough goal and strengthened his case for a place in Gareth Southgate's squad this summer

Ollie Watkins waited more than a year to play for England again, and took full advantage of the opportunity by grabbing the elusive goal in a sleepy 1-0 win over Australia. The Aston Villa striker has been banging on Gareth Southgate's door with seven goals this season, and made it an eight at Wembley Stadium, diving to the back post to steer in Jack Grealish's shot.

It was no less than Watkins deserved after making all the right movement and hitting the post, while Grealish also made his mark to show Southgate he is worthy of a starting berth next summer in Germany.

Anderson Talisca: How the 'New Rivaldo' went from Benfica talisman & Chelsea transfer target to Cristiano Ronaldo's perfect partner at Al-Nassr

The Brazilian might just be the best player in the Saudi Pro League right now, but his career could have turned out far differently

Very few casual football fans would have been aware of Anderson Talisca's existence before Cristiano Ronaldo's shock transfer to Al-Nassr in January. Indeed, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's arrival in Saudi Arabia soon sparked an unprecedented European exodus, with other household names such as Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante and Jordan Henderson also accepting mega-money contracts in the Middle East.

The Pro League hasn't just attracted players who are into the final stretches of their careers, either. Neymar, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Riyad Mahrez and even 21-year-old Spain playmaker Gabri Veiga have also been persuaded to turn their backs on Europe.

The world is now watching as the Saudi game grows at an exponential rate – which has presented Talisca with a unique opportunity. The Brazilian could easily have shrunk into anonymity at Al-Nassr as merely a supporting cast member, existing only to help keep the spotlight on Ronaldo, but has instead made it his mission to show people that he is also a superstar.

The question is, how did a player with Talisca's immense talent go under the radar for so long?

  • Getty

    Where it all began

Talisca was born in the city of Feira de Santana in Bahia – the fourth-largest state in Brazil. Like most children in the country, he was raised in poverty, and quickly realised that football could be a path to a better life.

After honing his skills on the street, Talisca stepped into Vasco da Gama's youth ranks as a 13-year-old and spent two years with the club, before joining then-Brasileiro Serie B outfit EC Bahia in 2009.

He graduated from Bahia's academy four years later, at which point they had been promoted to the top-flight, and made his professional bow in a clash with Corinthians. Talisca opened his scoring account for the club in his second appearance against Sao Paulo, and soon became a regular in Cristovao Borges' team.

The raw edges in Talisca's game were clear, but so was his limitless potential. "We have to understand that at this age this inconsistency of performance is natural," Borges told reporters when quizzed on the forward's development. "He is a national-team player. Just be patient."

Talisca went on to net a crucial last-minute goal at Cruzeiro that ensured another season in Serie A for Bahia, who parted ways with Borges in December 2013 before appointing another Brazilian coach in the form of Marquinhos Santos. The manager was impressed with Talisca's dedication right from the off, and his ability from a dead-ball.

"Talisca has been reaping the rewards of his training," said Santos. "He is a player who dedicates himself. He is always one of the last to leave the field. After training, he is insistently training free-kicks. It's still early days, he's a young man who has potential and my biggest concern is with his head. Let him continue to evolve and become a great player."

    The big break

Talisca found the net nine times in the first half of Bahia's 2014 season, and his impressive performances eventually attracted the attention of Portuguese giants Benfica, who forked out €5million for the Brazilian starlet that July. Jorge Jesus gave his newest signing big billing, telling the media at his unveiling: "He’s another one who is going to make millions for Benfica."

The manager's words had the desired impact as Talisca scored eight league goals in his first three months at Benfica, including a stunning hat-trick in a 5-0 victory over Vitoria Setubal. Jesus received widespread praise for unearthing a new gem, which prompted a surprise outburst from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

"I think Benfica hired well," Mourinho said to Portuguese broadcaster . "They say Talisca is unknown, but he is only so unknown because he's only not playing in England because he doesn't have a work permit. If he had one, he would be here!"

Jesus then fired back in hilarious fashion: "They knew as much about him as I know about D’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers!"

Former Bahia coordinator Newton Mota was the man who really deserved all the credit for discovering Talisca, and he wasn't at all surprised by his fast start to life at Estadio Da Luz. "People call him Yaya Talisca [after Yaya Toure], but I think he is closer to Rivaldo, who was left-footed, with long strides and good shot from distance," Mota told.

Benfica were flying in the Primeira Liga, but had only picked up one point from their opening three Champions League games. They were eight minutes away from being held to a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Monaco on matchday four, too, only for Talisca to score a last-gasp winner after ghosting in at the back post to meet a corner on the half-volley.

That was the moment he truly announced himself to European audiences and lived up to his tag as the 'new Rivaldo'. Although Benfica still ended up exiting the competition at the group stage, his status as one of the continent's most exciting young players had been secured, and links to Chelsea began to intensify.

Jesus' side finished the 2014-15 season as Portuguese champions and also lifted the Taca da Liga trophy, with Talisca managing 14 goal contributions across all competitions. He also received his first call-up for Brazil, but everything changed when Jesus cut ties with Benfica to join their arch rivals Sporting CP.

    The turning point

Rui Vitoria was the man selected to replace Jesus after an impressive four-year spell in charge at Vitoria Guimaraes, and he instantly set about stamping his authority on the squad, insisting on a 4-4-2 formation with two combative central midfielders, which essentially eliminated the need for the playmaker role Talisca had made his own under Jesus.

The Brazil Under-23 international only started three league games in the first half of the 2015-16 campaign, and he was forced to come out and address reports of tension with the new manager. "Every player has to go through such moments" Talisca said in December of that season. "There is insecurity and lack of confidence, but I am working hard. I played more under Jesus, but there is no personal feud with Rui Vitoria."

Talisca scored nine goals in all competitions despite his limited playing time, including a brilliant free-kick against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals. Benfica ended up losing that tie 3-2 on aggregate, but earned plenty of plaudits for their surprise run in Europe, and bounced back to clinch their third successive league title.

Vitoria had undoubtedly taken Benfica to another level, and decided that Talisca's services were no longer required ahead of his second season in the dugout. Liverpool and Wolves emerged as suitors for the former Bahia wonderkid, but Besiktas won the race for his signature – agreeing a two-year loan deal with Benfica.

Less than a month later, Talisca came up against his parent club in the Champions League. Benfica were 1-0 up when the Brazilian was introduced to the action as a second-half substitute, and they managed to hold their lead under deep into stoppage-time. However, with seconds remaining, a needless foul gifted Besiktas a 25-yard free-kick, and Talisca stepped up. Inevitably, he was able to whip the ball into the far corner using his instep, and didn't hold back with his celebration before being mobbed by his team-mates.

In his post-match interview with , Talisca accused Benfica of not paying him his final salary after the birth of his daughter, before emphatically denying that his exit from the club was financially motivated: "I want to send a message to Benfica management, because they didn't respect me. There were people who criticised me and said that I left Benfica because of money, but that is a lie."

Talisca ended his maiden season at Besiktas with 17 goals and another league title, earning the nickname 'Kiralik Katil' from supporters, which translates to 'Hired Assasin'. He was the top scorer for the club in all competitions in 2017-18, too, but Besiktas dropped a level as a team and they were not able to make his transfer permanent.

Benfica were still determined to offload Talisca, who had burned all of his bridges at Estadio Da Luz, and it was reported that Mourinho reignited his interest in the attacking midfielder, this time as Manchester United boss.

Guangzhou Evergrande beat United to the punch, though, snapping Talisca up on an initial loan deal in June 2018. Four months later he joined them outright for €19m (£17m/$21m), bringing his time in European football to a premature end.

    How's it going?

Talisca spent three years at Guangzhou, scoring 39 goals and setting up another 13 in 65 appearances. He added one Chinese Super League title to his crown during that period, and was identified as a top target by Saudi giants Al-Hilal in the early months of 2021.

The allure of even greater riches in the Middle East did indeed prove too much for Talisca to ignore, but it was Al-Nassr who won the race for his signature as they struck a bargain $9m deal with Guangzhou in May that year. Talisca was an instant hero in the eyes of Al-Nassr fans for turning down their main rivals, and their bond grew as he quickly established himself as the most important member of the squad. A prolific haul of 31 goals from his first 37 games saw Talisca singled out as the new Pro League poster boy – but Ronaldo took that title from him at the start of the year.

They quickly forged a strong partnership, though, not least because of their Portuguese language connection, and combined for a number of crucial goals in the second half of Al-Nassr's 2022-23 campaign. However, the league title did not come back to Mrsool Park, which ensured another busy transfer window in the summer.

Al-Nassr bolstered their squad by bringing in the likes of Sadio Mane, Marcelo Brozovic, Aymeric Laporte and Seko Fofana, along with Ronaldo's Portugal colleagues Otavio and Alex Telles. Talisca's position at the club was called into question after Mane's arrival, with it suggested that head coach Luis Castro would be unable to fit the Brazilian into his line-up next to the ex-Bayern Munich star and Ronaldo.

A potential return to Besiktas was mooted for Talisca, but he committed to staying put – only to suffer an injury that saw him miss the first few weeks of the new season. Fears over Al-Nassr's tactical set-up were raised again upon his return to full fitness, despite the club's poor start in the Pro League.

As it turns out, Talisca was actually the missing piece in the puzzle. Al-Nassr have been flying since welcoming the former Benfica man back into the fold, winning 17 of their last 18 games in all competitions.

That has included picking up maximum points in the AFC Champions League group stages, with Talisca scoring all three goals in their latest victory over Al-Duhail. He's already up to 17 goals for the season in total, just four fewer than Ronaldo.
