Spurs: Mirror makes Alex Scott claim

According to a report from The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Bristol City playmaker Alex Scott.

The lowdown: Rising stock

Born in Guernsey, the 18-year-old made the move from FC Guernsey to Bristol City in 2020 and has gone from strength to strength since arriving in the English Football League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Having made three fleeting appearances during the 2020/21 season, Scott has established himself as a mainstay in Nigel Pearson’s side this term.

Now it appears that Spurs, as well as a host of other top-level clubs, could be taking a closer look at the England youth starlet…

The latest: Tottenham eye talented youngster

As per the report from The Mirror’s James Nursey, Tottenham officials have ‘scouted’ the playmaker and were in attendance to run the rule over Scott during their win at Stoke City on Good Friday.

It’s claimed that the Championship outfit rate Scott at £10million but could be open to a summer sale of the seven-cap England Under 19 ace in order to meet Financial Fair Play regulations.

Furthermore, the report confirms that officials from N17 were in situ with a ‘view to a summer raid’ as the teenager – who has the ability to ‘float’ around the pitch according to ex-manager Tony Vance – played 90 minutes against Stoke City.

The verdict: No brainer

Already dubbed the ‘Guernsey Grealish’, signing Scott looks to be a relatively risk-free venture for Spurs.

Whilst both manager Antonio Conte and transfer guru Fabio Paratici are likely to target ready-made first-team operators during the summer transfer window, it’s important to keep at least one eye on the future.

So far this season Scott has scored four times and provided two assists in 36 second-tier outings and has shown an unrivalled versatility with a capability of playing in advanced midfield roles, as a centre-forward and more recently as a makeshift wing-back.

Under contract until 2025 (Transfermarkt), the fee, playing style and homegrown status makes this deal akin to the capture of Dele Alli in 2015 and is one that Spurs should be desperate to get over the line.

Wolves: Max Kilman ruled out for the season

Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Max Kilman has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to the Express and Star, who reported that the centre-back’s season is expected to be cut short after he suffered an ankle injury in training ahead of their clash against Brighton at Molineux this afternoon.

The 24-year-old had missed the trip to Burnley last weekend but it has now been confirmed that the injury will keep him out for Wolves’ five remaining Premier League matches of the current campaign.

It’s a gutting blow for the defender, who has been a colossus at the back for the West Midlands outfit this term, making 34 appearances across all competitions whilst contributing to ten league clean sheets.

Lage will be fuming

Wolves manager Bruno Lage has fully unleashed the centre-back this term after his predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo handed Kilman 18 league appearances last term and just a combined four in the two top-flight seasons prior to 2020/21.

The Englishman has been a major contributor to his team’s excellent defensive record, with only Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea conceding fewer league goals than their 29 in the Premier League.

To illustrate Kilman’s importance at Molineux, he ranks in the top four in Lage’s squad for minutes played, interceptions per match and aerial duels won, as per WhoScored.

Moreover, the defender’s form has seen him tipped for an England call-up, although Gareth Southgate left the 24-year-old out of his last Three Lions squad.

Kilman was missed last weekend as his side lost 1-0 to Burnley and there may be concerns going into today’s match against the Seagulls as to whether or not Willy Boly can deputise efficiently.

Securing European football is still very much a possibility for Lage’s team, who sit just three points behind seventh-placed West Ham whilst also having a game in hand.

With Liverpool winning the Carabao Cup and the Reds set to face Chelsea in the FA Cup final, with both of those teams set to finish in the top four, seventh place will be enough for a passage to the Europa Conference League.

Therefore, the loss of one of Wolves’ most trusted players will be a tremendous blow for Lage, who will surely be fuming over this stroke of bad luck.

Man Utd considering Darwin Nunez swoop

Manchester United are strongly looking into the possibility of signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The lowdown: Nunez’s rise to stardom

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a continued upwards career trajectory ever since arriving in Europe from South America in 2019.

Originally signed by Spanish second-tier outfit Almeria, Nunez scored 16 times and provided three assists in just 32 outings before being snapped up by Benfica.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Having since netted 48 goals in just 84 appearances for the Portuguese giants, a host of Europe’s elite clubs are looking on with intent…

The latest: United keen on Nunez

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has claimed that the Red Devils are ‘100 per cent’ weighing up a move for the dynamic frontman.

He stated: “Darwin Nunez is 100 per cent somebody that they are looking into right now. He’s very likely to land in the Premier League in the summer, and Manchester United are taking his availability very seriously. And they think that he might be just the guy that they need for next season.”

The verdict: Sign him at all costs

As statement signings go, few are likely to turn heads like the eventual winners of the race to sign eight-cap Uruguay star Nunez this summer.

So far this season, the man who was branded ‘world class’ by his Benfica manager Jorge Jesus has scored 34 times and provided four assists in 40 appearances across all competitions.

With the immediate futures of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nunez’s compatriot Edinson Cavani all in doubt, bringing the Uruguayan youngster to Old Trafford would be a sensational early piece of business from new Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United leading Darwin Nunez chase

Manchester United are reportedly leading the way in the race to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

The Lowdown: Club-record deal?

Nunez, described as an ‘absolute beast’ on a Liverpool podcast last month following his display against the Reds, has been heavily linked with a £109m move to Old Trafford.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Should a transfer in that region go through, the 22-year-old would become United’s most-expensive signing of all time, eclipsing a £94.5m move for Paul Pogba.

New manager Erik ten Hag recently made an ‘express request’ regarding Nunez, and it looks as if CEO Richard Arnold is making progress over a potential deal.

The Latest: United leading the way

Sports Witness relayed an update from Record on Thursday regarding Nunez and Manchester United.

They claimed that the Red Devils aren’t only ‘attentive’ but are now ‘one of the best-placed clubs’ to sign the striker this summer, especially with Edinson Cavani set to leave and Marcus Rashford’s future up in the air.

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

You can see why Ten Hag would like to bring Nunez to the Premier League this summer. The Uruguayan has scored a whopping 34 goals in 40 games in all competitions this season, one of which came against Ten Hag’s Ajax to dump them out of the Champions League.

The Dutchman could have a shortage of attacking options when he arrives at the club, so landing Nunez, who has played as a centre-froward, second striker and left-winger, could prove to be an excellent piece of business both in the short and long term.

It looks as if a mega-money move will be one to keep an eye on when the transfer window opens, with Ten Hag possibly making a special request for Nunez following reports suggesting he’ll be making decisions on targets in the coming weeks.

Derby County facing new points deduction

Derby County are set to be faced with a fresh threat ahead of the start of the 2022/23 season as the Rams could receive a three-point deduction heading into the new campaign, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The Lowdown: Takeover update

The Rams entered administration back in September last year amid ongoing financial problems at the club, and despite a valiant effort after multiple deductions, Wayne Rooney’s side were relegated to League One.

Chris Kirchner was named as the preferred bidder for Derby in April, but even though most of the key areas of the takeover had already been arranged, a new roadblock appeared as it was reported that the American businessman was reluctant to proceed if unable to strike up a deal with Mel Morris for Pride Park.

However, Kirchner’s exclusivity period has now been extended by Quantuma after expiring last weekend, hopefully providing more time for negotiations to be agreed.

The Latest: Derby facing new threat

In a new report published on Nixon’s personal Patreon page after that update (via Football League World), it’s claimed that a new three-point deduction will come into action if the administrators fail to pay the player’s wages for the month of May, a term that would be triggered after being issued two years ago following Morris not paying the playing staff.

In addition, if it’s revealed that the County squad are not paid on time in June either, then there’s a possibility that the club could be dealt an extra three-point deduction on top of the original one.

The source states that the only way in which the club could avoid these punishments altogether is if all of the players and staff decided to defer their wages on a voluntary basis until there is a sufficient sum of money in the bank.

The Verdict: A never-ending saga

Fans of the Rams will have no doubt have been praying the constant points deductions was all over now that the Championship season has come to an end, but it looks like that’s far from the case.

There were rumours circulating back in February that Derby had informed the EFL that they were close to completely running out of money, so it wouldn’t come as any surprise to see Quantuma fail to cough up the amount required to prevent this further sanction.

If Kirchner still has strong intentions to complete a deal for the takeover of the club, hopefully this is something that can be finalised over the coming days to kickstart the new chapter of Rooney’s Rams before the opening day of the new season.

Rangers: Heart & Hand fume over Europa League final update

Rangers fans will have the opportunity to watch the Europa League final in a fan viewing area at a separate stadium in Seville, but the news has left some members of the Ibrox media bemused.

The lowdown

Rangers are due to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Spanish city on Wednesday as they look to clinch the first major European trophy in their history.

It’s the club’s first continental final since the 2007/08 season, when they lost 2-0 to Zenit St Petersburg in the UEFA Cup showpiece.

It’s no surprise, then, that supporters are expected to flock to Spain in large numbers. The game will be held in Sevilla’s Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium, which can hold 40,000 spectators.

Rangers have announced that supporters who don’t have tickets for the match will be able to watch it at a screening event at the nearby Estadio La Cartuja, which has a capacity closer to 60,000.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Heart & Hand, Rangers media partners and podcasters, offered their reaction to the development on Friday.

They called it ‘bizarre’ that the fan viewing arena is actually larger than the final venue and admitted that ‘UEFA logic’ had left them baffled in this instance.

The verdict

One report has estimated that 100,000 of the club’s supporters will be descending on Seville, even though UEFA has strongly advised ticketless fans not to make the trip and warned against the risk of counterfeiting.

It’s worth stressing that Rangers have been allocated only around 25% of the seats in the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium (10,000). A further 13,000 spots will be up for grabs in a public ballot, but around nine thousand appear set to go to UEFA partners.

It’s clear that they could have filled out a far larger stadium or indeed a larger allocation with relative ease.

In other news, this Rangers star will leave on one condition.

Man United plot move for Orel Mangala

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Stuttgart midfielder Orel Mangala as they scan the market for options who can bolster their engine room.

What’s the word?

That is according to a report from the Daily Express, who claimed that the 24-year-old’s agent Mehmet Eser has confirmed United’s eagerness to sign his client.

As per the report, it is said that Erik ten Hag is looking to add to his midfield, with Nemanja Matic just one of several departures set to occur over the summer.

As per the Daily Express, the Belgian can leave the Bundesliga club for as little as €15m (£13m) in the summer.

Imagine him and Ten Hag

Ever since the departure of Daley Blind in 2018, United have lacked genuine versatility in their ranks, but they could make up for it with the prospective signing of Mangala.

The Belgian, who has been dubbed “superb” by journalist Josh Bunting, is capable of playing anywhere in midfield but has played centrally for most of his 28 matches for Stuttgart this term, with 18 appearances from that position.

Despite averaging just 32.1 passes per game, Mangala is clinical in moving the ball forward, with 1.41 key passes per match. He has also demonstrated his ability to thrive in an attacking overload, with his match average of 2.28 touches in the attacking penalty area an impressive return considering his defensive-minded approach.

With one goal and three assists across his 28 appearances in the Bundesliga this season, Mangala has adjusted well to a slightly higher position in midfield and has demonstrated his consistency as a utility player across the board.

With Ten Hag’s tactical, intricate and flexible approach to football, players who are capable of occupying multiple positions make them more well-rounded and, as such, they become integral to the Dutchman’s ‘Total Football’ approach.

Ten Hag would surely appreciate having the hugely versatile 24-year-old at his disposal at Old Trafford ahead of his first campaign in charge of United.

Michael Holding to retire from cricket commentary

Forthright with opinions, unafraid to show emotion, he brought the same grace to broadcasting as his run-up during his playing days

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Sep-2021Michael Holding is set to bring to a close one of the most distinguished modern broadcasting careers when he hangs up his mic at the end of this season, ESPNcricinfo has learnt.Holding has been part of Sky Sports commentary team for over two decades now, a role he has fulfilled with at least as much distinction as his playing career. Holding is widely regarded as one of the game’s greatest pace bowlers, playing 60 Tests and 102 ODIs for West Indies from 1975 to 1987, and becoming an integral part of the all-conquering West Indies’ sides of the era.He began his commentary career in 1988 in the Caribbean, and quickly brought the same grace to the commentary box as his run-up during his playing days, an approach so smooth it earned him the nickname of ‘Whispering Death’. But Holding, 66, never held back from expressing some forthright opinions on the game, not least that he wouldn’t commentate in domestic T20 leagues because he thought it wasn’t cricket.Modern viewers would have seen another side of Holding last year. Having been keenly aware that the significance of the West Indian teams he played for went far beyond the field of play, the Black Lives Matter movement in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd last year, became a moment for Holding’s voice to be heard loud and clear once again. His eloquent, heartfelt and personal piece to Sky’s cameras on racism and inequality became one of the broadcast highlights of year, eventually winning two broadcast awards in the UK.Holding won the Royal Television Society (RTS) Award for Sports Presenter, Commentator or Pundit and the channel, the best Sport Programme award. The RTS said Holding “captured the mood of the event perfectly, bringing a personal perspective to bear on a moment of huge significance” when talking about Floyd’s murder and the movement it sparked. That led, this year, to his acclaimed book, ‘Why We Kneel, How We Rise’ dealing with racism in sport.Related

Holding was unafraid to show the emotion that he did in that piece of programming. Pakistani fans and viewers will remember his broadcast in the aftermath of the spot-fixing scandal in 2010, a summer in which he was commentating and admiring the skills of Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir. The pair were found to have been involved in spot-fixing during the Lord’s Test. Holding, who had been on air during one of Amir’s bigger no-balls, needed a moment to compose himself when he talked of the sadness of a talented 18-year-old bowler getting dragged into fixing. That combination of insight, empathy and the gravitas of a celebrated career meant that Holding was one of those rare ex-players who was on air even when the national team he represented wasn’t playing. He was part of the panel for England’s recent Test series against India, but had already indicated last year that he was near the end of his broadcasting career.”I am not too sure how much further than 2020 I will be going with commentary. I cannot see myself going much further down the road at my age. I am 66 years old now, I am not 36, 46 or 56,” Holding was quoted as saying by on a radio talk show.”I told (Sky) that I could not commit to more than a year at a time. If this year gets totally destroyed, I might have to think about 2021 because I can’t just walk away from Sky, a company that has done so much good for me.”

Inexperienced players 'learning on the job effectively' the biggest plus, says Henry Nicholls

“If you’re able to stick in there, then it is actually tough for them as well,” Nicholls says about the tough Dhaka tracks

Deivarayan Muthu06-Sep-2021In the T20I series opener, New Zealand combusted to 60 all out – their joint-lowest total in the format. In the second match, they came within one hit of toppling Bangladesh. Then, in the third, which was played on the same pitch that was rolled out for the first fixture, New Zealand overcame a middle-order meltdown to put up 128 for 5, which proved 52 too many for Bangladesh. Henry Nicholls, who was at the heart of New Zealand’s recovery on Sunday, was particularly impressed with the improvement shown by an inexperienced side.”Yeah, it’s great. From where we started in the first match and right through yesterday, the conditions have all varied in each game, which is a challenge in itself,” Nicholls said at a media interaction. “I think, as a group, we’re pretty inexperienced, and it’s been great to see guys learning on the job effectively.Related

“Tom [Latham], as captain, has been really clear with the guys and, I guess, knowing it is tough and also looking for us to find ways to make improvements and if we keep doing that each game, those results will come. So, it’s obviously nice to get that yesterday and I guess for the guys to really feel that to turn the tables on Bangladesh and put them under a little bit of pressure that it can be tough for them as well.”Nicholls said that New Zealand’s strong comeback and ability to adapt fairly quickly to tricky conditions would also serve them well on the forthcoming tour of Pakistan, which begins a week after the end of the Bangladesh trip.”Obviously, incredibly disappointing and a tough way to start [the tour]. When we look back now, we certainly reflect on how tough that wicket was,” Nicholls said. “Certainly, one of the toughest wickets I’ve ever played on in my career and I just think, as a group, we stuck together and we have a lot of trust in each other to know that we will make improvements and also just that if we do what we want to do and execute it in our way, then we were able to turn the tables a little bit on Bangladesh.”And yesterday it showed that if you’re able to stick in there, then it is actually tough for them as well. Moving forward to Pakistan as well for this group, [it’s a] good lesson in terms of that – just sticking in and knowing that we do have the right skills and it’s just about adapting to the different situations.”Nicholls had played just five T20Is before the Bangladesh tour, but the others around him are even less experienced, and he is being seen as a senior figure – along with Latham – on this tour. In the third T20I, Nicholls absorbed the pressure and saw New Zealand through to a competitive total by sharing an unbroken 66-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Tom Blundell.A fit-again Finn Allen got on top of the Bangladesh attack in the powerplay in the third T20I•AFP/Getty Images

“Yeah, certainly getting into this tour, that’s something I was excited about,” Nicholls said of the additional responsibility. “Being more of an experienced player and knowing the stuff on the park is important but touring in general – a lot of young guys are probably on their first overseas tour… So for me and the likes of Tom, as captain, and for the other experienced guys, just sharing that knowledge with them and really enjoying the role of taking a bit more responsibility.”As I said, the cricket is important, but when you come to these parts of the world, you’re spending a lot of time at the hotel and a lot of time with each other, so you try to make sure that everyone is pretty level – good or bad – and knowing that there’s always another challenge on the horizon, that’s two days’ time for us.”New Zealand have had skittish starts with the bat in each of the three T20Is, but Nicholls reckoned that the batting line-up would draw confidence from the way a fit-again Finn Allen got on top of the Bangladesh attack in the powerplay. Allen dashed out of the crease to the second ball he faced and belted Mahedi Hasan down the ground for four. In all, he cracked three fours in six balls, hitting the spinners out of the attack, before Mustafizur Rahman had him chipping a grippy offcutter to mid-on for 15 off ten.”Having Finn in the line-up – the way he came out yesterday and the way he plays and the way he dominates attacks, he gave the guys a lot of confidence,” Nicholls said. “You see, he doesn’t lack a lot of confidence, which probably helps. Even throughout the Super Smash, the way he performed and got his opportunity with the Black Caps and in the Bangladesh series, he was full of confidence.”He obviously has an amazing skillset and he’s already been in environments like the IPL and in England [T20 Blast and the Hundred] as well, which only further enhances it for him. He’s certainly got that X-factor, which he can go from ball one. In these conditions, getting off to a flier gets you ahead in the game, which is massively important.”
