Misbah proud of UAE record

Misbah-ul-Haq has credited his bowlers and top-order batsmen for the special roles they played in defending their proud history of being unbeaten in the UAE since they adopted the emirate as home terrirtory

The most important thing about thriving in the desert is the ability to adapt to its harshness. Plants store water, animals spend most of the day preserving energy in the shade and the Pakistan cricket team take wickets on tracks where most attacks toil without reward.Misbah-ul-Haq credited his attack with dealing a decisive blow to South Africa and paving the way to allow Pakistan to break the visitors 15-match unbeaten streak. “The way our bowlers bowled in the first innings on a flat track, they gave us a good sniff by getting South Africa out for under 250,” he said. Mohammad Irfan extracted bounce, Junaid Khan found movement and Saeed Ajmal and Zulfiqur Babar troubled South Africa with turn to ensure Pakistan only needed four bowlers to take 20 wickets. In comparison, South Africa used seven bowlers and needed 45 and a half more overs to bowl Pakistan out in their first innings. On a surface that offered little assistance to either seam or spin, Pakistan relied on guile to do the job. Misbah said that is something learned through experience and time. “With Pakistan, it’s a mental game. We always do well here so we have the confidence and the belief that we can do well.”Pakistan have not lost a Test since making the UAE their adopted home in 2010 and have bowled their opposition out in 15 of 18 innings they’ve taken to the field in. Their spinners are particularly threatening as England, and now South Africa have discovered. Misbah believes defeating another No.1 team in the world would give the team even more confidence.”Conditions played an important role,” he said. “When you are playing at a venue where you’ve performed well as a team, its a big plus. You really feel comfortable going in search of a win. I always believed this team has the quality to produce this type of cricket. If we can beat the No.1 side in the world, we can do it against any side in the world.”Pakistan’s bowling performance was backed up by batsmen who showed more character than they have in the past, particularly the top two. Misbah ensured they shared the credit for the victory. “That really gave us an advantage. The way they started and the way they were attacking, that made a difference,” he said. “By scoring at almost four runs an over they gave us that momentum to press on.”Misbah also thought Khurram Manzoor and Shan Masood did the important job of softening up the South African bowlers and making them question their own plans “When you score only 249 on a flat track. different things go through your mind and bowlers try different things. They want to take quick wickets and go for runs.”He did not have much to say about his own hundred, the fourth of his career, and the first in over two years. When nudged, Misbah admitted it was an innings he will cherish. “It is the most precious thing for a batsman to achieve. Such a satisfaction you cant have doing anything [else]. I really enjoyed that. And we won the game so that makes it something special to remember.”If being home has a feeling, that is what Misbah, more than anyone else would have experienced. The supporters cheered his every move and there were plenty of them in the ground. Given that it was played over the Eid holiday, crowds were larger than predicted with thousands in on every day. Despite the heat, humidity and distance of the ground from the city centre, they filled the grandstand and the grass embankments, brought their drums and their flags and cheered on their team.”That was wonderful, especially to see that after such a long time,” Misbah said. “Usually, you only have this support in one-dayers so it was nice to have it in a Test. I can tell you, it really helped the team. It kept the players motivated. I hope people come to the next game as well.”Misbah has promised the Dubai-based fans they will not be in for a draw because Pakistan are not simply. going to try and preserve their lead. “We have just given clear instructions to the groundsman that we want results. We want to exploit our home advantage,” Misbah said. “We are not going to think negative because whenever there are negative thoughts in your mind, you don’t get results. Whether we win or lose, we want results.”

England endure wretched start to tour

Chris Tremlett, Boyd Rankin and Steven Finn are in a three-way battle for a spot in the England side at the Gabba, but they were given a rude awakening by a second string Western Australia side on the opening day of the Ashes tour

England made to toil on opening day of Ashes Tour

The three England quick bowlers fighting for a spot in the first Ashes Test against Australia in 21 days’ time received a rude awakening on the opening day against the Western Australia Chairman’s XI at the WACA.Chris Tremlett, Boyd Rankin and Steven Finn are in a three-way battle for a spot in the England side at the Gabba on November 21, with Tim Bresnan still recuperating from a stress fracture in his back and unlikely to be seriously considered. But none of them managed to impress as a second-string Western Australia side reached 369 for 4 by stumps on the first day on the back of a blistering 104 made by their No 3 Chris Lynn, only his third first-class century. Each of WA’s top four batsmen made half centuries.England’s fast-bowling trio struggled for line and length on the WACA wicket and were expensive in their first official run out of the tour. The hard-hitting Lynn was loaned to WA by Queensland, overlooked for their Sheffield Shield clash being played at the same time, even though he hit a six to win his state the national domestic title just one week ago.He gave just one chance , with Chris Tremlett spilling a difficult chance at mid-on from the part-time offspin of Joe Root when he was on 66. Not that Root was blameless in the field. He grassed a sharp chance at first slip when Mitchell Marsh nicked one off the bowling of Finn. The effort in the field would not have impressed the England captain Alastair Cook, who missed the first game of the tour because of sore back.WA’s no 1 side are involved in a Sheffield Shield game in Victoria and their squad has been stretched further by Mitchell Johnson, Adam Voges and Nathan Coulter-Nile being in India with the Australian one-day side. The stand-in top order made the most of their chances against England, sending reminders to their state selectors of their talents.Lynn’s entertaining knock came off just 124 balls. Openers Luke Towers and Marcus Harris hit 77 and 69 respectively and Marsh, returning from a serious hamstring injury, hit 58 from 59 balls before he was the fourth and final wicket taken, caught behind by Matt Prior from the bowling of Ben Stokes.England had to wait until the third over after lunch before claiming its first scalp. It was senior statesman James Anderson, easily the pick of the bowlers, who forced Marcus Harris to fend a short ball to Ian Bell in the gully. The breaks in play could have had as much to do with WA losing its first two wickets as did any consistent bowling from the England attack with the second wicket coming in the first over after the tea break. After a patient knock, Towers edged a short delivery from Root to keeper Prior while attempting a cut when the score was 225.James Anderson was the one England bowler to impress on the opening day of their Ashes tour•AFP

It was a galling experience for Prior, who was having his first taste of England captaincy as well as being a world apart from their start to their last Australia tour in 2010 when they retained the Ashes.England fielded a full-strength side when they won the corresponding game against WA by six wickets. On this occasion, only five of their side – Prior, Root, Bell, Jonathan Trott and Anderson – are guaranteed a spot in Brisbane. The three bowlers hoping to join Anderson and Stuart Broad in the attack have a maximum of two further outings before the opening Test, after this game, to impress the England selectors. England will leave Perth for a four-day game against Australia A in Hobart before competing their preparation for the first Test with another four-day contest against a NSW XI at the SCG.Rankin struggled to find a good length, particularly in the first of his three spells, producing several rank full-tosses. His first four overs cost him 29 runs. He recovered and beat the bat several times in his second spell. His one wicket, that of Lynn, caught by Michael Carberry at backward point, came in his third over. But he went for nearly five runs an over.Tremlett was used at both ends over five short spells, but he often overpitched and, for all his height, failed to make the most of the usually bouncy WACA wicket. He rarely troubled the WA batsmen and went for just over four runs for each of his 17 overs.Finn was the least impressive of the trio though, a fact highlighted by three consecutive short-pitched deliveries that were pulled for four by Towers just after the lunch break. He also gave up more than 4.5 runs per over. The England medical team will be doing their best to get Bresnan fit as quickly as they can.

Prasanth, Manoharan complete Kerala win

Rishi Dhawan lasted just four balls in the morning and with his dismissal, any hopes Himachal Pradesh had for getting a positive result came to an end

The Report by Nagraj Gollapudi in Kannur08-Dec-2013
ScorecardPadmanabhan Prasanth and Vinoop Manoharan helped Kerala defend 196•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Rishi Dhawan lasted just four balls in the morning and with his dismissal, any hopes Himachal Pradesh had for getting a positive result came to an end. Kerala’s spin twins, Vinoop Manoharan and Padmanabhan Prasanth, wrapped up the tail to help Kerala secure an important victory and stay in contention to qualify for the knockouts.Dhawan had remained resolute during an eventful final session on the second day, after Himachal had thrown away a solid start from their openers. From 48 for no loss, Himachal’s batsmen were defeated by a fast-wearing surface, good spin bowling, and some terrible shot selection. In 11 minutes, the visitors had slid to 60 for 6.But Dhawan, in the company of Sangram Singh, who had been pushed to the lower order after opening in the first innings, reinvigorated hopes that had virtually vanished after the middle-order collapse. Even then, the challenge of chasing 196 on a turning pitch with a lot of bounce was too big and Sangram got out towards end of the day. The onus was on Dhawan but Prasanth Padmanabhan, the left-arm spinner who had bagged a career-best 7 for 55 to help Kerala gain a vital 40-run lead, accounted for the Himachal captain for the second time in the match. Dhawan had attempted a slog sweep against the turn in the first innings and was trapped plumb. Today, Padmanabhan changed his strategy a little bit.Former India wicketkeeper Chandrakant Pandit, who was recently appointed director of the cricket academy at the Kerala Cricket Association, had pointed out to Padmanabhan that one of the reasons he had failed to beat Dhawan was because he had been bowling a flatter trajectory on the second day. Keeping that in mind, Padmanabhan practiced bowling slow in the nets to give the ball more flight. His efforts paid off, as Dhawan lunged forward to defend a ball that dipped and turned away after pitching. The bounce helped take an edge and AV Jagadeesh gladly accepted the catch at slips.Himachal’s resistance ended quickly after that as Padmanabhan trapped Vishal Bhatia lbw to end with match figures of 9 for 106.Despite the loss, Himachal should be confident about qualifying for the knockouts because they are on the top of Group C with 23 points after six matches. Kerala have a home game against Maharashtra starting on December 14, followed by two away encounters. With six points from today’s win, Kerala are joint second along with J&K, but they need at least one more outright victory to seal their qualification.
