Giles motivated by own near-miss

Ashley Giles has called on his England ODI side to go a step further than he managed and win the Champions Trophy

Ashley Giles has called on his England one-day side to go a step further than he managed and win the Champions Trophy.Giles, the England limited-overs coach, was part of the side that reached the final of the event the last time it was staged in England in 2004. With the game at The Oval seemingly well within their grasp, England were thwarted by an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 71 in 15 overs between Courtney Browne and Ian Bradshaw which took West Indies to a two-wicket victory with seven balls to spare. England are the only one of the eight sides competing in this year’s event which are yet to win a global 50-over trophy. Now, though, Giles feels England have “an opportunity” to shed that unwanted tag and has welcomed the ECB’s decision to set a World Cup win in 2015 among their targets in a new strategic plan.”I played in the last Champions Trophy [in England in 2004] and I know what it’s like to lose in a final,” Giles, who played in the game but was not asked to bowl, said. “It would be good to go one better this time.”We’ve an opportunity to win it this year. In these conditions, we should be a strong side. We’ve been very strong in all forms. We do have a strong squad and there is an opportunity there. I’m really excited about joining up with the guys next week and I’m sure they will be. There’s a good group of people.”Giles realises, however, that despite home advantage and a run of form that saw England reach No.1 in the ODI ratings in the last 12-months, nothing can be taken for granted. The condensed nature of the event means that one poor day is likely to cost a side dear and England will be without the injured Kevin Pietersen.”We’ve no God-given right to win it,” Giles continued. “It is a big target. But your targets should be big; they would not be challenging if they weren’t. We all know we have not won a 50-over world competition. Things need to fall into place, form is important, and it is important in our strategy as well that we go into that World Cup as No. 1 in the world to give ourselves a real good chance, but certainly it is feasible.”We know the Ashes is around the corner, but the Champions Trophy means a lot to these players and to me. If we get our form right and our timing right and keep people fit then we have an opportunity. It’s an exciting year.”Everyone has done fantastic things over the last few years and now we just need to build on that. We have a squad of players who are quite possibly capable of winning that World Cup.”

Cook, bowlers see England through to semi-final

England do not make life easy for themselves in knockout tournaments, but they secured their passage to the Champions Trophy semi-finals

The Report by Andrew McGlashan16-Jun-2013

England do not make life easy for themselves in knockout tournaments, but they secured their passage to the Champions Trophy semi-finals through a collectively impressive performance from the bowlers which followed a brisk innings from Alastair Cook after the weather had threatened to leave their hopes in Australia’s hands. But even as England were heaping pressure on New Zealand’s top order as they chased 170 in 24 overs, the weather still loomed. Rain, which had caused a five-hour delay after the toss, was creeping over the Bristol Channel and although the chase was behind the rate, if the match had been abandoned before 20 overs New Zealand would have gone through and England would have needed a favour from Australia on Monday. The 20th over, sent down by the peerless James Anderson, itself included more drama when Corey Anderson, who was added to New Zealand’s squad on the morning of the match as a replacement for Grant Elliott, appeared to injure his calf after aborting a run and spent several minutes receiving treatment which did not impress Ashley Giles and David Saker on the England balcony.Still, even after Anderson had completed the over there could have been another twist. Tim Bresnan conceded 19 in the next over as Kane Williamson, who made a brave 67 off 54 balls, and Anderson took their partnership to 73 before Williamson skied to cover off Stuart Broad whose heel was ruled, by the third umpire, to be fractionally behind the line. It was a mighty tight call.England’s new-ball bowling had soon made the chase appear far more daunting than some envisaged after their last seven wickets fell for 28 in 34 balls. Anderson set the tone with a three-over opening spell of testing pace and movement which accounted for the hapless Luke Ronchi and Martin Guptill in the space of three balls in the fourth over. When Ross Taylor was pinned lbw by Bresnan – his use of DRS did not save him – New Zealand were 27 for 3 and their hopes rested on Brendon McCullum. But none of the batsmen could get hold of England’s attack.Ravi Bopara, proving almost impossible to score off, was able to hustle through five overs for 26 and when McCullum pulled him to deep square-leg, where Joe Root held a brilliant low catch, New Zealand’s chances of winning had taken an almost terminal hit. For a short while it appeared they were playing for rain, and the abandonment, with the new batsmen not exactly speeding to the wicket until Williamson and Anderson gave it one, final, forlorn effort.New Zealand had appeared to claim a significant advantage when they won the toss, but the fact that the match was completed to the adjusted length without further interruption, and therefore the need for Duckworth-Lewis was erased, meant England did not suffer in the way that can be the case when run chases are reduced after further rain. But it was still tricky to assess what a matchwinning total would be batting first. That England had solid progress for 18 overs was down to their captain. The one format Cook does not play for England is Twenty20, but that does not mean he doesn’t want to and he showed what a complete all-round batsman he has become with 64 off 47 ballsQuite extraordinarily, he was dropped three times and all three chances were shelled by Nathan McCullum. There were two misses at midwicket when Cook has 14 and 37 and, the simplest, at backward point on 45. McCullum eventually held a return catch off the England captain which heralded an upturned in his fortunes. He ended the innings having held four chances. For the first time in an ODI innings Cook hit more than one six. But England could not finish with a flourish as Kyle Mills, who became the leading wicket-taker in Champions Trophy history, and Mitchell McClenaghan shared seven wickets.Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott, who remained at No. 3 despite the shortened match, fell inside the first four overs, but Root was immediately busy at the crease, using his wrists to find that gaps (a skill not natural to all England’s batsmen) and provided the first six over the innings when he pulled Daniel Vettori over deep midwicket.Brendon McCullum switched his bowlers around regularly and it was the return of James Franklin that saw Cook, who reached his fifty from 39 balls, move up a gear when he straight drove his first delivery into the sightscreen at the River End. Just to show he can play “out-of-the-box” he followed that with a scoop over short fine-leg before his second life at midwicket by Nathan McCullum and he later lofted Williamson over wide long-off.Once again England’s power hitters – Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler – could not make a major impact and neither could Bopara match his recent onslaughts. But this time the bowlers did not fail in their task.

Chandimal becomes youngest Sri Lanka ODI captain

Sri Lanka squad

Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Lahiru Thirimanne (vice capt), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Angelo Perera, Jehan Mubarak, Rangana Herath, Sachithra Senanayake, Ajantha Mendis, Lasith Malinga, Shaminda Eranga, Thisara Perera, Suranga Lakmal
In Thisara Perera, Jehan Mubarak, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Angelo Perera
Out Kusal Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Dilhara Lokuhettige, Jeevan Mendis

Dinesh Chandimal will become Sri Lanka’s youngest ODI captain, at 23, after being handed the reins for the first two matches against South Africa in Colombo. Regular captain Angelo Mathews was unavailable after earning a two-match suspension for an over-rate offence in the West Indies tri-nation series. Lahiru Thirimanne was named vice-captain.Middle-order batsman Jehan Mubarak earned a recall, four years after his last international appearance. Now 32, Mubarak did not show sustained aptitude at the top level in his previous stints with the national team, despite a fine domestic reputation. He hit 42 in the practice match against the South Africans on Wednesday and had been the top-scorer in Sri Lanka’s inter-provincial List A competition in January, with an average of 60 and a strike rate of 120.96. Uncapped middle-order batsman Angelo Perera was named in the 15-man squad as well, after top-scoring for his side in the warm-up match, with 46.Allrounder Thisara Perera reclaimed his place after missing the West Indies tri-series. An injury to Nuwan Kulasekara’s left ring finger, which was sustained in the Caribbean, ruled him out of the first two matches and Suranga Lakmal retained his place as Kulasekara’s replacement. Tillakaratne Dilshan is also recovering from a tear to his right medial calf muscle, but was named in the squad and is expected to be fit for the first match. Upul Tharanga, who hit a career-best 174 not out in the West Indies after being picked as Dilshan’s replacement, was also retained, at the expense of Kusal Perera, who opened for Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy.Ajantha Mendis kept his place as well, despite having played just one match in the tri-series, but will compete with left-arm spinner Rangana Herath and offspinner Sachithra Senanayake for a place in the XI. Sri Lanka also have part-time spin options in Mubarak and Angelo Perera, but legspinning allrounder Jeevan Mendis was omitted, after an unconvincing run. Both matches will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium, but the squad may be changed ahead of the third ODI in Pallekele on July 26. The teams play five ODIs and three Twenty20s.

Taylor and Bird make Test auditions

If the second day in Hove was a Test audition, Jackson Bird and James Taylor would be expecting call-backs

If the second day in Hove was a Test audition, Jackson Bird and James Taylor would be expecting call-backs, while the casting directors for the Old Trafford Test would be worried about the range displayed by James Faulkner, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon. Matthew Wade would be resigned to watching from the audience. By stumps on a rain-affected day, Taylor was unbeaten on 64 and Bird had collected two wickets, though he was unlucky not to have more, and Sussex had moved along to 228 for 5.Taylor could have, and should have, been a third victim for Bird, when his edge was put down by Steven Smith at second slip; it was a low chance, but one that a fieldsman of Smith’s capability should have taken. The life allowed Taylor to compile an otherwise calm half-century full of nudges and prods, and featuring few truly memorable strokes, but he knows that his hopes of playing at Old Trafford rest more on Kevin Pietersen’s fitness than his own runs.”He was a bit scratchy at times but he dug in there and he dug in there quite well,” Bird said. “He nicked a few balls through the slips and got dropped once but he is still at the crease. He tries to make you come to him and he puts the bad balls away and I thought he batted quite well.”When an early stumps was called at 5.38pm due to bad light and subsequent rain, Taylor was well positioned to push for a century and he had a capable partner with him at the crease, Chris Jordan on 23. Jordan had also been put down at second slip by Smith, a far easier chance at head height off the bowling of Faulkner, who struggled for line in his early spell but found a slightly better rhythm later in the day and picked up the wicket of Matt Machan, who top-edged a catch to midwicket for 16.Like Faulkner, Starc was initially wayward, especially with the swinging new ball, and while his figures appeared to show his economy, as much as anything that was a reflection of the batsmen being unwilling to chase wide balls. Starc also claimed a wicket to a top-edged hook when Michael Yardy was taken at fine leg for a duck, and like Faulkner he bowled better as they day wore on, although both men were comfortably outperformed by Bird.Bird’s efforts must have moved him towards favouritism to replace in Pattinson at in the third Investec Test at Old Trafford, especially given that he also impressed during the tour match against Worcestershire before the first Test. Bird claimed the first wicket when Luke Wells played the wrong line to a fullish, straight delivery that took out the middle stump, and against the right-handers he was nagging outside off. His accuracy was a notable point of difference with Starc failing to control the ball at the other end.At times, Bird was moving the ball too much – three successive deliveries whistled past the outside edge of Chris Nash’s bat – but eventually he had his reward when Nash edged low to Smith at second slip. Bird ended his first spell with 2 for 16 from seven overs and when he returned after lunch he was again a handful for the batsmen, drawing the edge of Taylor that was put down.Like Bird, Ashton Agar had opportunities missed off his bowling: an edge from Rory Hamilton-Brown that tickled Wade’s thigh and wasn’t grasped by Smith at slip, and a missed stumping down leg side when Wade couldn’t grab the ball cleanly to catch Machan short. Overall it was a miserable day for Wade, who on a number of occasions failed to glove the ball cleanly, and combined with his duck in the first innings, he has failed to put any pressure on Brad Haddin to hold his place for Manchester.Wade did, however, take a catch when Hamilton-Brown edged behind for 73 off Agar, who finished with 1 for 48 from eight overs. Agar leaked plenty of runs but so did his rival for a spin place at Old Trafford, Lyon, who was targeted by Hamilton-Brown during a blitz before lunch. Hamilton-Brown reached his half-century from 34 deliveries, which included 23 off seven consecutive balls from Lyon, against whom he advanced and clipped through gaps with ease.Hamilton-Brown also lofted Lyon for a pair of sixes over long-off and long-on, although Lyon did improve his bowling as the afternoon wore on. Following a 90-minute rain break, Lyon found a little more dip and flight, and asked a few questions of the batsmen, though none that they were unable to answer. The chances of a twin-spin attack at Old Trafford may yet depend on the pitch, but neither Lyon nor Agar would have been truly happy with their efforts in Hove.Earlier, Smith had been the focus when he resumed on 98, in search of the third first-class century by an Australian on this tour, and he reached it with a late cut for four off Monty Panesar. Immediately the Australians declared with Smith on 102 and Agar on 8, having added 12 runs to their overnight score to finish at 366 for 5. They batted only 2.4 overs on the second morning, but the batsmen may yet have another chance to impress on the third day.
