Siddle stares down vegetarian critics

Australia’s vegetarian fast bowler Peter Siddle has chewed up and spat out the suggestion that the absence of meat from his diet was the reason he was unable to recover from his Adelaide exertions in time to play in the pivotal Perth Test against South Africa. As he prepared to resume as the leader of the hosts’ attack in the Test series against Sri Lanka, starting in Hobart on Friday, Siddle flatly rejected the view – proffered by Dennis Lillee, among others – that meat was essential to the diet of a fast bowler. Siddle backed up his rebuttal with the correct observation that his ability to maintain high pace and accuracy for long periods has in fact been helped by the lifestyle change, which he made earlier this year.”I struggled to bowl over 50 overs [before becoming vegetarian] so, to bowl 64, I think that’s an improvement,” Siddle said at Bellerive Oval. “So I’m probably in a better place than I ever was. For people to say that’s the problem and that’s the reason why [I withdrew], they’re the ones kidding themselves. They’re not the ones out there having to do it and having to go through it. To still be bowling 140 kmph in my 64th over at the end of the fifth day in a Test match, that probably shows the improvements.”Siddle’s pre-season admission that he had foresworn meat has been the cause of some mirth among those who harbour cliched views about the dietry habits of fast bowlers, even though he made the change with plenty of support from Cricket Australia’s dieticians and support staff. The team performance manager Pat Howard has previously pointed to the decorated examples of the triathlete Dave Scott, the AFL footballer Brett Kirk and Martina Navratilova’s tennis mastery as examples of vegetarian success in elite sport. But Lillee’s comments to ABC radio during the Perth Test fuelled Siddle’s irritation that nearly halfway through the summer he is having to justify his choice of diet. “In India [at MRF Pace Foundation], our guys have got to eat protein even if they are considered vegetarian – they have got to eat fish and chicken,” Lillee had said. “I think you have to rebuild muscle after you have had a 50-over Test. I know there is more to it than clouds and grass but I have not seen too many (vegetarian fast bowlers) survive. [Colin] Croft tried it for 18 months and couldn’t do it. Sidds is trying it and good luck to him.”Irrespective of the vegetarian debate, Siddle is satisfied that he is ready to push himself again in Hobart, after making the call in Perth that a tight hamstring and general fatigue meant he would not have been up to the task. “At the time we made the right decision. It’s one I didn’t want to have to make,” he said. “It was just going to be the safest option. We didn’t want another circumstance like Adelaide that put us more out of the game.”Part of Siddle’s own planning for this summer and the tours of India and England that lie beyond it was his decision not to take part in the hustle and bustle of the Twenty20 BBL. “At the moment I didn’t want to play in the BBL,” Siddle said. “It was part of wanting to concentrate on Tests, the same thing I spoke about earlier in the year leading into the Test matches, I wanted to miss the one-day games and concentrate on the red ball. Just with the 12 months we’ve got coming up from now, it is such a big time for us as a Test team. The best thing for me was to focus on that, try and bowl as many overs as I can throughout trainings, in games and get the body ready and raring to go for Test cricket. That was my plan and that’s the one I want to stick with.”The call to avoid the shortest format may ultimately prove far more significant to Siddle’s success over the next 12 months than whether or not he has any chicken with his stir-fry.

Maxwell, Hodge lead Stars to win

A captivating partnership between the old and the new of Australian T20 cricket, Brad Hodge and Glenn Maxwell, and effective bowling helped Melbourne Stars claim an important 21-run win against the Sydney Sixers at the MCG. It left the defending champions contemplating two successive defeats.Brad Haddin’s decision to field first was proving to be an inspired choice when the Sixers reduced their opponents to 17 for 2, but the darkness made way for the light of Hodge and Maxwell. They are two players of contrasting styles, at contrasting borders of their careers, but they combined for an exhilarating partnership. Hodge kickstarted the carnage in the fifth over. Luke Feldman bowled short and wide to Hodge and the soon-to-be 38 year-old cashed in with two boundaries either side of point.Maxwell watched mystery spinner Sunil Narine cautiously in the sixth over, but an inexplicable front-foot no-ball allowed a free swing, which Maxwell duly put over the fence. Thereafter, Maxwell let loose his power hitting, and Hodge indulged in timing and placement.Maxwell reached his fifty first, from just 31 balls, having at one stage clubbed 30 runs in just 12 deliveries with the help of four fours and a six. The crowd had to wait another three overs for Hodge to raise his bat, but it was only then that they realised he, too, had reached the mark in just 31 balls. The pair had amassed 118 runs from just 69 deliveries when Hodge departed. The Sixers could, however, could have prevented the damage as both men could have been run out at the beginning of their knocks. Feldman dropped the ball as he broke the stumps when Maxwell, who had scored just two at the time, was well short of his ground. Narine went one better than Feldman, when he collected an accurate throw cleanly but missed the stumps with ball in hand to allow Hodge to reach safe ground for his 21st run.The normally impregnable hands of Steve Smith also missed a Maxwell sky-ball in the deep, but he holed out shortly after for 82 off 50 balls. It was pivotal to the imposing Stars total of 6 for 177.The Sixers started positively with the makeshift opening pairing of Daniel Smith and Steve O’Keefe. They combined for 74 before Smith slog-swept Shane Warne into the safe hands of David Hussey, to end the ninth over, which cost 15. Brad Haddin entered as the biggest threat to the Stars and their fears compounded when Henry dropped a simple chance at deep point. But Warne manipulated his bowlers well to create breakthroughs at the other end. O’Keefe was stumped off Cameron White, who bowled impressively. Warne, the gambler, predicted Moises Henriques’ dismissal on commentary again. He foretold Henriques’ penchant for the slog-sweep over midwicket, and prescribed a well-flighted, big-spinning legbreak wide of off stump. When Henriques swung and missed the first, Warne went double-or-nothing and Henriques top edged to cover. It was yet another brilliant display of tactical nous, and surgical execution.Warne then turned to Lasith Malinga, who is a surgeon of finishes in this tournament. He ripped the heart out of the Sixers along with the roots of Haddin’s middle stump in the 17th over. The 144kph-inswinging yorker was precise, and it left the Sixers with far too much to do. The Stars recorded their third-straight win.

Confira a lista abaixo!

Lima irá sediar a principal disputa pré-Olimpíadas.

COPA DO MUNDO FEMININA

SUL-AMERICANO E COPA DO MUNDO SUB-20

O Mundial distribui 12 vagas no masculino e no feminino via individual geral e 18 vagas no masculino e 12 vagas no feminino via aparelhos.

Million for Maxwell on day of surprises

The IPL 2013 auction was supposed to be a relatively quiet one where settled franchises looked to fill in a couple of holes in their squads but, as is the case every year, it had plenty of surprises

The IPL 2013 auction was supposed to be a relatively quiet one where settled franchises looked to fill in a couple of holes in their squads but, as is the case every year, it had plenty of surprises. Most of the biggest earners were players barely known outside their home countries, while marquee names like Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting attracted only one bid each.Australia’s Glenn Maxwell talked himself up as his side’s X-factor at the World Twenty20 last year, and though he flopped there, Mumbai Indians splurged a million dollars for his services. “He is an upcoming youngster,” Nita Ambani, owner of the Mumbai Indians, said. “He can bat, bowl and I think he is a great fielder. We had thought of some names before we came here and he was one of them.”Australia have a wealth of young fast bowlers but few would have bet that the one getting the largest paycheque would be 21-year-old South Australian Kane Richardson, who was bought by Pune Warriors for $700,000.Another player with only one international cap, South Africa allrounder Chris Morris, was picked up by Chennai Super Kings for $625,000. Kolkata Knight Riders spent a similar amount on Sri Lanka offspinner Sachithra Senanayake, who has struggled to make the national side but hit the jackpot on a day when the country’s premier slow bowler, Rangana Herath, went unsold. Another Sri Lanka spinner, Ajantha Mendis, who wasn’t picked up at the auction last year, was back in favour among the franchises, earning $725,000 from Warriors.Among the Indians, as expected, Mumbai allrounder Abhishek Nayar was the most expensive signing, sold for $675,000 to Pune. There were surprises as well, as Saurashtra’s fast bowler Jaydev Unadkat, who got only one game last season for Knight Riders, earned $525,000 from Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab’s fast bowler Manpreet Gony, who has disappointed since the inaugural IPL in 2008, earned $500,000 from Kings XI Punjab. Some of the franchises had clear-cut strategies. Super Kings were out to bolster their bowling, and picked up five bowlers including Morris, the experienced Australia quick Dirk Nannes ($600,000) and Sri Lanka’s teenaged offspinner Akila Dananjaya. Royal Challengers also wanted to spruce up their fast bowling, signing four quicks including West Indies’ Ravi Rampaul and RP Singh, who has had plenty of success in the IPL, and Australia allrounders Moises Henriques and Daniel Christian. One of the major weaknesses in Delhi Daredevils’ squad had been a shortage of quality spinners, which they have tried to rectify by bringing on board South Africa’s Johan Botha and Sri Lanka’s Jeevan Mendis. Last year’s winners Knight Riders were mostly satisfied with their squad and were among the least active franchises at the auction, only buying two players. Kings XI Punjab, who haven’t had much success in the past couple of years, also bid for and bought only two players.Several players who were expected to be sold weren’t bought, including Australia’s big-hitting batsman, Aaron Finch, who has earlier been part of Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals, New Zealand opener Martin Guptill, who hit a T20 century against South Africa little more than a month ago, and South Africa’s Vernon Philander, who has had a spectacular year in Test cricket. In all, 37 players were sold on the day and $11.9m was spent. While most franchises used up substantial portions of their US$12.5m salary cap, three of them – Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kings XI and Royals – used only around half their purse. Royals have the leanest squad, with only 21 members, while Warriors reached the maximum of 33 players.

LANCE!

Fresh start for cricket-starved Zimbabwe

Preview of the first ODI between West Indies and Zimbabwe in Grenada

The Preview by Kanishkaa Balachandran21-Feb-2013Match factsFebruary 22, 2013
Start time 0930 local (1330 GMT)Dwayne Bravo stands in as captain for the first two ODIs•WICB

Big pictureThink of a match involving Zimbabwe in 2012 and you could be forgiven if you failed to recall a single one. Bizarrely, Zimbabwe played just eight internationals in total (three ODIs, four T20s and a Test), losing all, in a forgettable year. Their last one-dayer was 11 months ago, on the tour of New Zealand. They played a tri-series in South Africa in June but their victory couldn’t be seen by a worldwide audience as the series was unofficial. They haven’t played as a unit in an international since they limped out of the World T20 in September after two games. They were due to host Pakistan and Bangladesh but none of those tours materialised. Ironically, their current tour of the West Indies, beginning with the first of three one-day internationals in Grenada, features seven games, almost the total they played in the last 12 months. They had just one practice game, against the University of West Indies Vice Chancellor’s XI, in which their batsmen found form. The lack of sufficient match practice, and, importantly, time together might be to their disadvantage as they take on West Indies.West Indies, on the other hand, have been busy travelers, having made trips to USA, England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Australia. Their recent form has been patchy, having lost all five one-dayers in Australia, before rounding off the tour with a big win in the one-off T20. Their batting was the biggest disappointment. Now against easier opposition, they have chosen to rest their regular captain Darren Sammy and Chris Gayle. Dwayne Bravo takes over the captaincy and he said his first task is to get the team to regroup after a tough tour and get back the winning habit. Having won the World T20, the expectations among their home fans would have skyrocketed.Form guideWest Indies LLLLL
Zimbabwe LLLWLIn the spotlightRamnaresh Sarwan was recalled for the Australia tour after 18 months, but failed to perform in the three opportunities he got. He was retained for the one-dayers against Zimbabwe and in absence of Gayle and Sammy, he will look to make the most of this second chance. It couldn’t have been easy for Sarwan, fitting back in to the same environment which gave him negative vibes. Water has passed under the bridge and Sarwan is happy to be back in the set up, having overcome the mental barriers that pulled him down. He smashed 90 for the Vice Chancellor’s XI on Wednesday. His best is yet to come.Vusi Sibanda has started off the tour well, cracking 147 off 114 balls before retiring out in the warm-up match. An attacking batsman, Sibanda hasn’t been a consistent scorer, with an underwhelming average of 23.93 for an opener. His record against West Indies is relatively better against other teams – 447 runs with four fifties.Team newsDenesh Ramdin returns to the side as the wicketkeeper after Devon Thomas was dropped after an ordinary tour of Australia with the bat. Kieron Pollard, who played the Bangladesh Preimer League final on Tuesday, has experienced travel difficulties in reaching Grenada ahead of the start of the series, and is subsequently a doubtful starter.
