Chris Gayle’s return to the West Indies squad is likely to be delayed after fresh doubts emerged over his availability for the ODI leg of the upcoming England tour, pouring cold water over the hard-earned resolution reached between him and the West Indies Cricket Board by CARICOM (the Caribbean Community).Earlier this month Gayle had sent a request to Ernest Hilaire, the WICB chief executive, asking the board if he would be selected for the ODI leg of the England tour in June; this was to help him clarify his availability for Somerset, with whom he had signed as an overseas player for the summer. Hilaire, in his response, has accused Gayle of “reneging” on the undertaking the player had given in the presence of St Vincent Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, stating he would make himself available to play for West Indies over Somerset.”I write to you with respect to the upcoming West Indies tour of England scheduled for May 2 – June 25, 2012. As previously indicated, I am willing to make myself available to play for West Indies for this tour after my obligations to my IPL team are fulfilled,” Gayle said in his e-mail, available to ESPNcricinfo, dated April 20.Gayle, who last played for West Indies in the 2011 World Cup, told Hilaire that having signed a contract with Somerset, the county required him to “give an undertaking” of his availability for the entire duration of the contract, which clashed with West Indies’ tour of England. Somerset have five Friends Life t20 games scheduled during the time West Indies play three ODIs and a T20I against England.”I would appreciate if I could be informed whether I will be contracted for the West Indies Team for England Tour before I give my commitment to Somerset,” Gayle said. “I only ask this so I would be in an informed position before I respond to Somerset, given the fact that I indicated my availability to the West Indies Team after the IPL,” Gayle said, requesting an immediate reply. In his response, sent on April 26, Hilaire said that “the Board has now considered your request and is extremely disappointed that, following the progress we had seemed to be making towards final agreement, you now seem unwilling to honour the commitment you made with respect to your Somerset contract.”According to Hilaire, Gayle had sent a “side letter” to Gonsalves on March 23, stating that he would “forego” his Somerset contract in order to make himself available to play for West Indies. “You reiterated this commitment in your April 1 letter, in response to WICB’s request for clarification,” Hilaire said. “Your most recent communication appears to suggest that you may be reneging on your availability as you now state that you are willing to make yourself available and not that you are making yourself available. A player cannot be considered for selection if he has not made himself available for selection.”According to Hilaire, during the meeting between Gonsalves, Gayle and the WICB, it was made clear to Gayle that selection matters did not come under the “purview” of the board. “The Board cannot give any commitment to any player with respect to his selection for a particular match or tour; but we will ask the Chairman of Selectors to have a discussion with you on issues relating to your selection at the earliest, in anticipation that you will meet all eligibility requirements,” Hilaire told Gayle. The ball is now once again in Gayle’s court with Hilaire asking the player to come up with an instant reply.

Shakib happy with IPL outcome

Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh allrounder, has had only one day at home to sleep off the delirium of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ maiden IPL triumph – he will play club cricket in Dhaka from Thursday – but he is not complaining

Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh allrounder, has had only one day at home to sleep off the delirium of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ maiden IPL triumph; he will play club cricket in Dhaka from Thursday. But he is not complaining, having revelled in the victory and the festivities that followed.”It would have been better if I had played more matches [he played eight out of a possible 18], but for any team the ultimate goal is to become champions in any tournament,” Shakib said. “I’m still very happy, because the IPL is a high-quality domestic tournament. It was good that I made some contributions in the team’s success.”The celebration after the victory and reception in Kolkata was amazing, and it’s really something that was a new experience for me. [Franchise owner] Shah Rukh Khan was also over the moon, because the team didn’t play as well in the last four tournaments.”Shakib was the only foreign player who attended the team’s open-top bus parade in Kolkata, and the function at Eden Gardens where tens of thousands of fans turned up to celebrate. Though Shakib said he enjoyed every bit of it, his face was burned and his body is now pleading for a break. There has been non-stop cricket for the world’s No. 1 allrounder this year, and the three before that, and though he had wanted a break after the IPL, Bangladesh’s summer schedule will keep him busy, running through to the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September. With Knight Riders’ participation in the Champions League T20 in October also confirmed, Shakib will have an extra tournament to contend with in his already jam-packed schedule.”I will play Thursday’s Premier League club match; it’s good that we have Twenty20 matches before the [Twenty20] World Cup. But for me, what is needed most, is a break,” he said. I’m not sure, but I might request the board for a break.”Bangladesh’s Twenty20 series in Zimbabwe in June and then in Ireland in July mean that Shakib will miss the Friends Life t20 in England. Paul Grayson, head coach at Essex, where Shakib is contracted, told ESPNcricinfo that the club will miss him.”Shakib had accepted an offer to play for us. The deal was agreed upon. We were hoping he would play Twenty20, CB40 [England’s domestic 40-over tournament] and some [county] championship games, and that he would stay with us until the back end of August.”It’s very disappointing [not to have him]. He is the No.1 allrounder in the world, and he ticks a lot of boxes for us. Now we have found out that the BCB have not agreed to give him a no-objection certificate. They are trying to arrange a few things and they don’t want to let him go.”Shakib is in much demand in the game’s shortest version, but he says he is disappointed to not get a Test anytime soon. “We [the Bangladesh team] have forgotten what a Test is!” he said. “I don’t think about it anymore, that will give me tension; I will feel bad if I think about it. Better not to think about it, and just play what’s coming up.” Bangladesh’s last Test series was against Pakistan last December.

Narine stars again as West Indies take series 4-1

Sunil Narine showed how his temperament is as notable as his variations, spooking the New Zealand batsmen in the closing stages to engineer another West Indies victory

The Report by Siddarth Ravindran16-Jul-2012

The fifth one-dayer between West Indies and New Zealand had plenty of similarities to Saturday’s fourth ODI at Warner Park: West Indies chose to bat, the top order stumbled, one of their Twenty20 stars made the slowest ODI half-century of his career to anchor the innings, and then some pyrotechnics from Andre Russell took the home side towards 250.The echoes of Saturday continued during the chase, so much so that when seven overs were remaining, New Zealand needed exactly the same number of runs and had the same number of wickets in hand – 50 runs and four wickets. And once again, Sunil Narine showed how his temperament is as notable as his variations, spooking the New Zealand batsmen in the closing stages to engineer another West Indies victory.A listless performance in the middle overs, with an abundance of dot balls and an inability to read Narine had seemingly fatally hurt New Zealand’s chances of victory midway through the chase. In the 26th over Ross Taylor was unluckily dismissed as the ball bounced off his toe before ricocheting off the wicketkeeper’s pad onto the stumps to find him short, and New Zealand slid to 108 for 4. They were in deeper trouble when Daniel Flynn, who has surely played his last limited-overs international for a while, was gone for a duck and Tom Latham’s struggle for runs continued. With Kane Williamson was also labouring to 29 off 50, the game looked over at 140 for 6 with 15 overs to play. The match changed, though, towards the end of the batting Powerplay as New Zealand found a pair of batsmen in Williamson and Andrew Ellis who both worked the ball around for singles, without getting bogged down. There had been only five boundaries since the 12th over till the almost the end of the 40th, but once Williamson got his half-century with a boundary to midwicket, and Dwayne Bravo was taken for 13 in the 42nd over, you could feel a momentum shift. That was only heightened when Bravo, normally a terrific fielder, put down an Ellis chance in the next over.Smart stats

West Indies won four ODIs in a series against a major team (excluding Zimbabwe and Bangladesh) for the first time since their 4-1 win against India in 2006. It is the 13th time overall that West Indies have won four or more matches in a bilateral series.

New Zealand lost four or more matches in a series for the 11th time in ODIs. It is the third time in the last three years that they have lost four or more matches in a series.

The victory margin of 20 runs is the lowest for West Indies against New Zealand. The previous lowest (in terms of runs) was the 23-run win in Antigua in 1985.

Andre Russell’s strike rate of 147.50 is the second-highest strike rate for a West Indies batsman against New Zealand for a fifty-plus score. The highest is Brian Lara’s 171.87 during his 55 in Auckland in 1995.

Sunil Narine’s 5 for 27 is the best bowling performance by a West Indies spinner in ODIs surpassing Jimmy Adams’ 5 for 37 in Adelaide in 1996.

Narine’s bowling display is also the third-best by a spinner in ODIs against New Zealand. Muttiah Muralitharan holds the record with 5 for 9 in Sharjah in 2002.

Enter Narine. He had three overs to go, and operated with an unusual around-the-wicket line. Chris Gayle has customarily changed matches with his power-hitting but this time he did it with an athletic piece of fielding. With Narine choking the runs, Williamson looked to hit out in the 46th, only for Gayle to dive and pluck a one-handed chance at midwicket. In his next over, Narine confounded Ellis and finished off his spell by knocking back Kyle Mills’ offstump, ending with the best figures by a West Indies player against New Zealand, and also ending the match as a contest.Narine had earlier boosted West Indies with the wickets of two set batsmen, Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill, who had kept New Zealand’s run-rate hovering around six in the mandatory Powerplay. In the company of Darren Sammy, whose accuracy was highlighted by the fact that he didn’t bowl a single ball down the leg side to the right-handers in the final three ODIs, Narine choked the runs to help West Indies claw back after a brisk start to the chase.New Zealand were satisfied halfway through the game, as they lined up with a wafer-thin bowling attack after dropping the specialist spinner Nathan McCullum and the experienced allrounder Jacob Oram. They have had wretched luck with injuries on this tour so far, and they were thankful that the latest casualty, fast bowler Trent Boult, sent down eight overs before picking up a thigh strain. The bowling was so inexperienced that Rob Nicol with an aggregate of ten wickets was the third-highest wicket-taker in the XI.What helped New Zealand’s part-time trio of Nicol, Flynn and Williamson to get through some low-pressure overs was the early spell of Tim Southee, who took 2 for 5 in his first three overs. Southee didn’t begin the series well, but has been impressive since his new-ball spell to Chris Gayle in the third ODI which was the first time Gayle failed in this series. In a line-up filled with flashy players, the relatively steady Marlon Samuels is expected to shoulder plenty of responsibility. Samuels task was made more difficult as Bravo was struggling to find fluency, especially as he was under-pressure to bat with more restraint after his slapdash innings on Saturday. He did his bit with a bustling 43.There wasn’t any exceptional bowling from New Zealand, who relied more on nagging line-and-length stuff. Bravo was far from the flamboyant big-hitter we have come to expect, struggling to 20 off 60 deliveries. He too capitalised on some loose bowling from Nicol, but was still unable to lift his strike-rate too much. Soon after reaching his seventh ODI half-century, he holed out, hitting a low full toss on the pads to midwicket.Kieron Pollard and Sammy failed, before Russell continued to press his case for a promotion from the depths of No. 9. First, Williamson was hammered over square leg for six, and then clubbed down the ground for four. Ellis, so steady through much of his spell, was rattled against Russell, serving up a couple of full tosses that were dismissed over midwicket. When Russell walked in in the 39th over, West Indies would have been happy with a score around 200; Russell’s cameo gave them 40 more.Once again, the brightest talents to have emerged from Caribbean over the last year, and two of their best performers in the series, played massive roles in a West Indies victory.

– Jogar a toalha?

Wind factor a challenge – Jayawardene

The wind is likely to be a big factor in Hambantota during the second ODI between Sri Lanka and India

Abhishek Purohit in Hambantota23-Jul-2012

Low stands are no barriers for the strongs winds that blow across the ground•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Windy Wellington has competition, from howling Hambantota. The ground here is surrounded by miles of forest and when the wind blows, it really does, from roughly west to east and right across the square. It nearly blows you off your feet; the low stands and grass banks are no barriers at all. The wind is supreme through the day but stops at night, creating different challenges for the batting and fielding sides during the first innings.Batsmen have to be careful the strong breeze doesn’t throw them off their stance, as Virender Sehwag said today. That is not their biggest worry, though. “You have to be careful when playing your shots against the wind or with the wind,” Sehwag said. “But we have played in Dambulla and in Wellington, now we are used to the wind.”Batsmen, however, have to worry only about themselves; the fielding captain has others to think about. The ball travels quicker through one side of the field; on the other side, top edges might seem to be carrying to deep fielders, before dropping short. Mahela Jayawardene had experienced the problem when India batted first on Saturday.”When we were fielding, the challenge for us was the wind,” Jayawardene said. “It was quite windy [so it was difficult] for the bowlers as well as some of the guys [who] were off balance. Then, you have to protect one side of the ground better than the other side. This venue is throwing up a lot of different challenges. You need to adapt to it.”The wind stops at night, and that presents different issues to the side defending a total. “One thing we observed [was] the ball was travelling quicker than the day at night,” Virat Kohli said after the first game. “[It] surely made a difference. The ball was running off the bat and it is important to assess what we did in the field.”I think we made a few mistakes, understandably, because we haven’t played on this ground before and to get the pace of the ground you probably need a game. Hopefully we can correct those mistakes and put in a good fielding effort in the next game.”Both sides dropped catches and fumbled in the field during the first game. Who will harness the wind better tomorrow?
