Wolves had a mare over Guimaraes transfer

As per Tim Spiers’ latest report for The Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers had an opportunity to move for former Lyon and now Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

24-year-old Guimaraes had attracted the attention of Europe’s finest outfits after another impressive campaign with Lyon in Ligue 1.

The notable sides who were interested in signing the Lyon star were Arsenal and Newcastle, with the latter signing him for £33.3m plus £6.5m in add-ons.

Spiers states in his report that Wolves “courted” the Brazilian star, before he completed his move to St James’ Park.

“The Best”

Newcastle United’s signing of the 24-year-old has turned out to be nothing short of astute, nor mesmeric.

Despite arriving as one of the most prominent central defensive midfielders around, Howe has been blown away by his technical ability and wants the Brazilian on the ball as much as possible.

As such, he has primarily functioned as a central midfielder for Newcastle United this season – a position that Wolves desperately need with the reported potential outgoings of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Leander Dendoncker.

Bruno Lage will surely regret not moving for the No.39 wearing midfielder after he watched him run the show when the two sides met in Wolves’ 1-0 defeat to Howe’s side in early April, completing 86% of his passes, 100% of his dribbles and winning a whopping 12 duels.

Guimaraes, who has been described as “the best” by journalist Charlie Bennett and as “out of this world” by Tom Barclay, has discovered his goalscoring touch in England, having scored three times in his last four Premier League games for the Magpies.

Almost all of Guimaraes’ metrics are in and around the 90th percentile on FBref, with his match average of 6.26 progressive passes, and 3.23 shot-creating actions per 90 a stand out compared to the likes of Dendoncker who registers an average of 1.99 progressive passes per 90, with a match average of 1.50 shot-creating actions.

Howe is right in letting him flourish as a central midfielder, as his attributes are so outstanding that it would be a waste to restrict him to defensive duties. On the other hand, Lage and Wolves were wrong in not actioning this deal if, as reported, they had the option to sign him.

The latest report from Spiers will come as a dagger in the hearts of a passionate fanbase who would have adored the Brazilian sensation.

Wolves have had a nightmare with this deal.

Jump before you are pushed, Chappell tells Ponting

The former Australia captain Ian Chappell has called on Ricky Ponting to resign from the Test captaincy in the wake of England’s Ashes-sealing victory in the fourth Test at Melbourne

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Dec-2010The former Australia captain Ian Chappell has called on Ricky Ponting to resign from the Test captaincy in the wake of England’s Ashes-sealing victory in the fourth Test at Melbourne, and has warned that if he does not take the decision himself, he could run the risk of being pushed out of the door by the selectors. Australia’s next Test campaign after the Ashes is the tour of Sri Lanka in August.Ponting admitted in the wake of England’s innings-and-157-run victory at the MCG that he “does not have much of a case” to present to the selectors, having presided over his third unsuccessful Ashes campaign, the most by any Australian captain since Billy Murdoch in the late-1800s. In the course of the series his batting form has collapsed, with a tally of 113 runs in eight innings, leading Chappell to suggest that he has passed his “use-by date”.”I’ve said all along that this should be the end of his Test captaincy reign,” Chappell told ESPNcricinfo. “I think he should be given the opportunity to defend the World Cup as a captain, but I just hope he makes the decision himself. I’d hate to see Ricky Ponting get pushed, I’d rather see him jump than be pushed. So, I hope he makes the decision and preferably he makes it himself, but if he doesn’t I hope that Cricket Australia suggest to him that it might be better if you went of your own volition, rather than us having to push you.”Ponting remains the most successful Australian captain of all time, with 48 victories in 77 Tests since 2004, while as a player he has taken part in 99 victories, the most by anyone in history. However, since the lost of Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne at the end of the 2006-07 Ashes, closely followed by other key team-mates such as Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist, his record has faltered, with the Melbourne defeat being Australia’s fifth in their last seven Tests.”I think he has been terrific, and he has probably delayed this day,” said Chappell. “This day was almost inevitable when you lose the standard of player that they lost three and four years ago. If you’re being realistic, there was going to be a lot of doom and gloom around the corner.”I think that has been delayed because of the form of Ricky Ponting, and the strength of Ricky Ponting as a captain,” Chappell added. “But there comes a time for all captains, there’s a use-by date, and when it’s time to move on, it’s about new players and a new captain. Sadly it’s come on the end of a loss, but that’s the way things work in sport.”

West Ham: Moyes ‘planning transfer’ for Premier League star

West Ham United manager David Moyes is now planning to sign a Premier League star who’s tormented his side before, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Busy summer ahead?

GSB and head of recruitment Rob Newman could be set for a busy summer as the Hammers board allegedly aim to give Moyes serious West Ham backing.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Claret & Hugh claim that the Scotsman could be handed a bumper £150 million transfer kitty to seriously upgrade the West Ham squad and build upon what has been another memorable campaign.

Moyes’ side reached the semi-finals of this year’s Europa League in what was an extraordinary feat for the east-Londoners and supporters will be hoping that isn’t the peak of their climb.

New signings will be needed for 2022/2023, perhaps most crucially an alternative striking back-up to Michail Antonio, with The Sun and reliable reporter Jack Rosser now sharing some interesting news.

The Latest: West Ham ‘planning transfer’ for Broja…

According to what they have learnt, West Ham are eyeing a bid for Chelsea striker Armando Broja with Moyes now ‘planning transfer’ to sign the Albania international.

This comes after his impressive loan spell at Southampton, where he has even ‘tormented’ the Irons at various points over 2021/2022 – including a phenomenal solo goal to knock them out of the FA Cup.

Moyes and his squad have apparently ‘been impressed’ by Broja’s performances against them as West Ham now plot a summer swoop.

The Verdict: Get it done?

His parent club will apparently command a huge price tag to let go of their rising star forward.

TUTTOmercatoWEB claim Chelsea value Broja at a pretty seismic €70 million (£60m), coming as a pretty substantial fee for a player who’s scored just six goals in 19 top flight starts at St. Mary’s Stadium this season.

The 6 foot 3 colossus, however, can more than hold his own as a target man – winning 2.7 aerial duels per 90 under Ralph Hasenhuttl in the league according to WhoScored.

By comparison to Moyes’ squad, only Tomas Soucek and Craig Dawson have managed a higher number, but for a whopping £60m it is arguably wise to first consider other striking targets.

Hughes confident he won't short out

Phillip Hughes is sick of defending his play against the short ball, but unless he can prove to England’s fast men that he can cope over the next week, the questions will keep coming on and off the field

Phillip Hughes is sick of defending his play against the short ball, but unless he can prove to England’s fast men that he can cope over the next week, the questions will keep coming on and off the field. Last year Hughes started the Ashes tour as Australia’s wonder child and left it with the reputation of being weak against bouncers.Steve Harmison roughed Hughes up in a tour match and then handed over the duties to Andrew Flintoff as they had him hopping even more awkwardly than usual with his jumpy, country-made technique. He was dropped after two Tests and has played only two games since then, with the high being a frenetic 86 not out against New Zealand. Simon Katich’s heel injury has allowed him a chance at Ashes redemption.”I’ve heard this the last three years of my career,” Hughes said of the problems with the short ball. “I’ve heard about it all along and I’m not worried about it at all. Being a short opening batsman, [the bowlers] like it up around your ears and face as much as they can. Often it’s not the short balls that get you out, it’s the follow-up balls, but that’s something I’ve always heard.”It should sound familiar because that’s what happened to him when Flintoff got him last year for 36 in Cardiff and 17 at Lord’s. The bouncers didn’t dismiss him, but the fuller ones that came after forced his unbalanced body into a couple of edges. Flintoff has retired and Hughes feels much more comfortable facing a line-up of James Anderson, Steven Finn and, probably, Chris Tremlett.”They’re going to come out firing and they did in the Ashes series last year as well, but then they had Flintoff who was their x-factor bowler,” Hughes said after training at the WACA. “He was outstanding in that series and he bowled beautifully.”Hughes was replaced for the third Test by Shane Watson, who quickly showed he could be converted into an opening batsman. It was the first bump in Hughes’ explosive career and since then he has had to wait for injuries to Watson and Katich to get a chance. This time he knows he has three games to make a sustained mark.”I lost my spot in England during the last Ashes series and that was disappointing at the time,” he said. “In the back of my mind I remember losing that series and that was disappointing, so I’ve come in and I’m all smiles at the moment and I’m happy to be around the guys again. I can’t wait to get out there and just enjoy cricket. I’m happier this time than I was the first time.”Hughes is still only 22 and owns a couple of hundreds in the same Test against the mighty South Africa, but he enters this campaign based more on a hunch than statistics. He has only 201 first-class runs for the season, which is well below his standard, and the haul was boosted by his 81 for Australia A against England’s second string attack last month.”Mentally I feel really good and I’m hitting them good in the nets, which is always a good sign,” Hughes said. “It’s been disappointing for New South Wales, I haven’t really got that big score under my belt. But I’ve got a lot of starts over the last couple of weeks.”Starts have been a problem for Australia during the opening two games of this series and are partly responsible for them being 1-0 behind. Despite Hughes’ flaws, he remains an exciting batsman and has won comparisons to Virender Sehwag at times during his seven Tests of slashing, slicing and edging.”That’s how I’ve always played, I’ve been quite aggressive especially the last few years and that’s my natural game and something I’m not going to change over the next few years,” he said. “I love watching Sehwag play, without a doubt he comes to my mind straight away as an opening batsman.”Yes he’s very aggressive, but what Sehwag can do is he can take a game away from any opposition.” Hughes has done that regularly with New South Wales since debuting as an 18-year-old, but is still working out whether the same approach can succeed at the highest level.

Rajasthan to rely on Dravid, Warne to attract young players

Rajasthan’s strategy, according to franchise officials, will be to use players such as Rahul Dravid and Shane Warne to attract and mould younger, talented domestic players.

Tariq Engineer10-Jan-2011

Rajasthan will rely on their experienced players like Shane Warne to guide what will be a team filled with young players•Indian Premier League

Faced with a reduced budget of $7.1m at the IPL player auction, the Rajasthan Royals were limited to buying just eight players (of which only two were Indian) and now face another problem – how do they fill out the rest of the squad? The solution, according to franchise officials, will be to use the star power and proven leadership qualities of players such as Rahul Dravid and Shane Warne, and the presence of two current national Twenty20 captains, to attract and mould younger, talented domestic players.Rajasthan were widely considered to have the weakest team on paper in 2008, but their combination of experience and young talent gelled under Shane Warne’s inspired leadership, and they confounded the pundits to lift the trophy in the tournament’s inaugural year. The same blueprint will be in place this time around, which is why Sean Morris, the Rajasthan chief executive, says they honed in on players who have captained their national Twenty20 sides, such as Johan Botha and Paul Collingwood.”We had to be focused and have specific targets,” Morris told ESPNcricinfo. “I think we’ve got the kind of dressing room you would build if you wanted a dream dressing room of leaders. We’ve surpassed our expectations. [There is] lots of talent that we can bring in to the dressing room that is full of international experience, creating a blend of incredible experience with the young, local players.””All these Indian boys can have Dravid as a mentor,” Raghu Iyer, spokesperson for Rajasthan, said. “The strategy is to have a blend of youth and experience. That is what delivered for us in season one. Yusuf [Pathan] was not the star he is now. [Ravindra] Jadeja was not the star he is now. They have all delivered for us and done extremely well.”There is a second incentive the team can offer talented, young players that other franchises might not be able to match – the opportunity to play regularly in the IPL. Over the first three years, a number of domestic players merely sat on the sidelines and watched while the more established players in the squad were picked for matches. They still benefitted from training with and being exposed to international players, but there is no substitute for competitive games.”Our players are going to be playing a lot of cricket for us,” Morris said. “The young Indian players will be looking at all the teams and players and thinking who am I going to compete with and when I am going to play? And they will look at Rajasthan and will be thinking I have a fantastic chance of playing.”The franchise plans to begin augmenting its squad with players from Rajasthan’s Ranji Trophy team, which has had an excellent domestic season, knocking off heavyweights Mumbai and Tamil Nadu on their way to the finals against Baroda. “The domestic players from Rajasthan are going to get a lot of focus,” Iyer, said. “They have done very well this season. There is a loyalty there and talent as well. We need to be riding that wave.”Among the players the franchise is looking at are 18-year-old Deepak Chahar, who made a huge splash on his first-class debut by taking 8 for 10 to dismiss Hyderabad for a Ranji record low-score of 21, and 20-year-old Ashok Menaria, who captained India in the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand in 2010, after which he bagged an IPL contract with Royal Challengers Bangalore. Rajasthan’s wicketkeeper, Rohit Jhalani, is another player the franchise has its eye on as they failed to pick up a keeper in the auction. In addition, the team is hoping to re-sign players that were part of its development squad for the first three years.Naturally, the franchise is also attempting to sign some of the more prominent domestic players, such as the Mumbai pair of middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane and seamer Dhawal Kulkarni, by offering them the same carrot of regular cricket alongside established stars.”At the end of the day, the domestic players are going to make a lot of difference,” Iyer said. “It [the squad] is going to be lean and mean. Everybody has learnt that.”
