Aston Villa: Bridge reacts to Chambers deal

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has been talking to GiveMeSport regarding Aston Villa’s move for Calum Chambers.

The Lowdown: Out of the blue

Chambers was Villa’s fourth and final senior arrival in the January transfer window, arriving out of the blue from Arsenal.

There were no rumours regarding the 27-year-old swapping the Emirates Stadium for Villa Park, with the versatile defender penning a three-and-a-half-year deal in the Midlands.

It has since been reported that Arsenal failed to activate a clause in the defender’s deal before the end of 2021 which would have kept him at the club for a further year, a mistake which ultimately placed Chambers’ future in his own hands.

The Latest: Bridge’s comments

Sky Sports journalist Bridge was giving his thoughts to GiveMeSport over Villa’s move for Chambers.

He compared it to Danny Ings’ switch from Southampton in the summer, revealing that ‘no one knew’ the defender would be joining Steven Gerrard’s side as he said:

“I called the Danny Ings one a teletext signing because back in the day, you’d see a player sign for a club and you never got any of these rumours or anything like that. And they did it again. I don’t know how they do it.

“No one knew Chambers was going to Villa. I didn’t hear anything, I don’t think anyone did. They’re very good at it.”

The Verdict: Brilliant

It’s hard to keep a transfer under wraps in today’s world due to social media and journalists like Bridge being in the know, but Johan Lange is making it look easy.

The move for Chambers means that he can provide cover at centre-back and right-back, positions where Villa needed strengthening last month. Axel Tuanzebe cut short his loan to join Napoli, whereas young right-back Kaine Kesler Hayden sealed a temporary move to MK Dons on deadline day.

Chambers will be able to challenge the likes of Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa and Kortney Hause in the centre of defence and can also be called upon to replace Matty Cash should he be required, making it a shrewd move indeed.

Kent cruised to their first win of the season by claiming a nine-wicket win over Scotland in their Clydesdale Bank 40 Group C clash at the Grange in Edinburgh. Batting first after winning the toss, the Saltires scored 180 for 6 from their 40 overs, their total built largely around an 87-run fifth-wicket stand between Richie Berrington (68) and Neil McCallum (41).Kent romped to victory though as skipper Rob Key (67 not out) and vice-captain Martin van Jaarsveld (72 not out) shared in a century partnership after Joe Denly’s 38. Kent had not won a match in any competition all season, losing their last Clydesdale Bank 40 game at Warwickshire before falling to defeat against Durham in the County Championship earlier this week.Scotland, for their part, went into the match apparently in good shape after sending Leicestershire crashing to a four-wicket defeat last week. The wheels looked to have come off early on for the Saltires, however, whenthey fell to 50 for 3. Ryan Watson (24) was bowled by Makhaya Ntini, captain Gavin Hamilton was out for eight, caught by Key off the bowling of Simon Cook and Tasmanian batsman George Bailey, who scored a half-century against the Foxes, was stumped by Geraint Jones for 16.However, after the dismissal of Omer Hussain left Scotland on 71 for 4, they mounted something of a comeback helped by two players who had played such an important part in the rare away victory against Leicestershire.Berrington racked up his 68 from 84 balls before he was caught by Amjad Khan and McCallum scored 41 from 52 balls before he was bowled by the same bowler. It left the hosts with a below-par target to defend and Kent quickly set about seeking their first victory of the season.Denly hit 38 from 45 balls before he was bowled by Majid Haq, but the partnership of Key and Van Jaarsveld followed and simply proved far too powerful for Scotland to break. The win, with more than nine overs to spare, lifted Kent up to fourth in the Group C table.

O jogador do Coelho estava impedido e o juiz acabou anulando o gol. A marcação adiantada do América dificultava as jogadas do time visitante.

Minister brokers deal with striking Kenyans

Kenya will send a full-strength side to the ICC World Cricket League Division One tournament in the Netherlands after the country’s ministry of sports intervened to end a stand-off between players and board

Martin Williamson22-Jun-2010Kenya will send a full-strength side to the ICC World Cricket League Division One tournament in the Netherlands after the country’s ministry of sports intervened to end a stand-off between players and board. The players refused to travel to England last Friday to honour a commitment to play warm-up matches ahead of the competition, and were trying to force Cricket Kenya to back down and agree to revised terms regarding central contracts as well as the removal of the head of selectors. On Monday, the ICC gave CK 24 hours to either agree to send a side to the Netherlands or risk expulsion from the event, a suspension of its grants, and severe fines. The ICC warned that “if it fails to deliver on its obligations … [it] may be in breach of its obligations to its commercial partners” and that would mean its funding would be suspended and there would be additional penalties levied. “It goes without saying that they will have a far reaching impact on cricket in Kenya,” the ICC continued. Were that to have happened then it would have meant CK would not have been able to afford any central contracts, leaving those same players who are demanding more money and a say in selection without a job.CK had looked at the fall-back of sending a second-string side but that would not have been possible because of visa complications.Ministry of sports representatives met with the players last night and senior CK officials today and are believed to have told the players any contractual issues should be addressed after they had honoured their international commitments.Maurice Ouma will lead the side in the tournament but his position as captain is in doubt as the players’ actions last week have left CK around £50,000 out of pocket. He claimed to the local media that the lowest-paid Kenyan cricketer was earning around US$4 a day. However, Cricinfo has seen documentation which shows the lowest centrally-contracted player earned around $700 a month in 2009. The lower figure quoted by Ouma was for casual non-contracted cricketers who turn up for nets and other events on a day-by-day basis.

NUFC submit "big" contract offer

A major update has emerged on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Barcelona attacker Ousmane Dembele…

What’s the talk?

Express journalist Ryan Taylor has revealed that the Magpies have submitted a contract to the forward ahead of the summer transfer window. The former Rennes winger’s deal with the Spanish giants expires in the summer and he is set to become a free agent, with PIF now looking to pounce on him.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “From what I understand, they’ve already made an offer to his agent for a pre-contract agreement, quite a big one as well. So, there is interest in Dembele.”

Buzzing

Eddie Howe will surely be left buzzing by this update, as the prospect of the French international arriving at St James’ Park is an exciting one.

Dembele has a wealth of experience in top-level football for club and country and still has plenty of time on his side to develop further, which is why he could be an excellent prospective addition to Newcastle’s squad. The winger played 50 games for Borussia Dortmund in Germany and has racked up 129 appearances for Barcelona, whilst also being capped 27 times by France along the way.

In that time, he has won a World Cup, two La Liga titles and two Spanish Cups – all by the age of 24. This highlights the quality and experience he could bring to the club despite his age, which is why he could be an exciting signing for fans to anticipate at the end of the season as he knows what it takes to win major silverware.

Dembele has racked up 31 goals and 23 assists for Barcelona, following on from 32 direct goal contributions in 50 matches in Germany. This shows that he has the ability to score and set up goals at the top level and suggests that he could make an impact in the final third for the Magpies next term, as he has proven it in both the Bundesliga and La Liga.

Therefore, Howe will be buzzing with the prospect of having him in his squad for the 2022/23 campaign. The ex-Bournemouth boss will also be delighted with PIF’s attempts to sign Dembele, as Taylor’s comments suggest that they are making a huge effort to bring in the Frenchman and are sparing no expense. He will now be hoping that they are able to pull a deal over the line in the coming months to lure the 24-year-old to Tyneside in July.

Aston Villa: Bertrand Traore injury claim emerges

Bertrand Traore’s focus for the remainder of 2021/22 will be to get to full fitness ahead of pre-season, according to injury expert Ben Dinnery (via Football Insider).

The Lowdown: Riddled with injuries

The 26-year-old recently returned from the Africa Cup of Nations with Burkina Faso, but has since sustained a hamstring injury in training.

During Steven Gerrard’s press conference last Friday (11 February), he revealed: “We’re going to lose Berto for a few weeks” (via Birmingham Live).

A separate thigh injury had kept the winger out for the majority of the season, severely limiting his game time.

During the 2020/21 campaign, Traore played an important part in Villa’s season, featuring in 36 of 38 Premier League matches, scoring and assisting seven times apiece.

The Latest: Dinnery makes pre-season claim

According to Football Insider, Dinnery has predicted that Villa will be looking to get Traore ready for 2022/23 season, rather than rushing him back to 100 per cent for the remainder of the current campaign.

“This is a difficult one,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“The initial noises are that it doesn’t appear to be on the higher end of the injury spectrum.

“Steven Gerrard has said a few weeks, so we’re maybe looking at a high grade one, so maybe two to three weeks.

“However, the context is we’re talking about a player who has only played 115 minutes of Premier League football all season.

“We’re not talking about getting players ready for the here and now. It’s about ensuring they stay available once they return.

“It may be the case that they are just looking to manage Traore between now and the end of the season.

“Get a few starts under his belt and some minutes but with a big focus on preparing him for pre-season.

“Once he gets that pre-season under his belt, he can hopefully hit the ground running next season.”

The Verdict: A blow, but sensible

With the arrival of former Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho, Gerrard should have enough high-quality attacking options at his disposal. This includes Emiliano Buendia, who arrived at Villa park at the beginning of the season, and has gone on to feature on 21 occasions for the West Midlands club in the top-flight.

On top of that, while Gerrard will be keen not to let the campaign peter out, the Villans are 12 points off the top six and ten points clear of the drop, meaning there is little to gain by forcing Traore back to action too quickly.

With former manager Dean Smith hailing the winger as a “marvellous technician”, it is not surprising to hear that the club are willing to take the time to ensure a smooth return, as he is clearly thought of very highly by Gerrard and the wider management team.

Pietersen niggle deepens England disappointment

To cap a day when the feel-good factor surrounding the England teamwas dented by another hefty defeat against Australia, Kevin Pietersensuffered a thigh injury which makes him unlikely to face Bangladesh inthe first one-day international at Trent Bridge on Thursday.Pietersen picked up the problem in the field and required a runnerwhen he came out to bat at No. 6, but was soon bowled by Steven Smithfor a duck to complete a lean series in which he made 95 runs in fiveinnings. Although he has yet to be ruled out of the entire three-matchseries against Bangladesh, the selectors are going to need cover in thesquad when it is announced on Sunday morning.”He’s got a quad strain, so it’s probably unlikely he’ll be fit,” said England’s captain, Andrew Strauss. “But we’re not going to rule him out completely at this stage.”Pietersen’s likely absence should mean a chance for Ian Bell to reclaim the one-day spot that he vacated in India in November 2008, while Ravi Bopara could be drafted into the squad as extra batting cover. England will be expected to dominate the contests against Bangladesh, who fell to a 149-run defeat against Sussex in their opening warm-up game, but the final two matches against Australia show the side still has work to do to be aconsistently dominant force.”We are disappointed we lost the last two, because we were in a good position to really assert some supremacy over Australia,” Strauss said. “We weren’t able to do that. But we won the series, and that’s something the guys should be very proud of. Beating the No. 1 team in the world in a five-match series is a great achievement, and we shouldn’t lose sight of that.”Although it was Shaun Tait’s express pace that lit up the day at Lord’s, Strauss pinpointed Australia’s late surge with the bat as the defining moment of the contest with the visitors taking 130 off their final 11 overs, mainly through Shaun Marsh and Mike Hussey who added 107 for the fifth wicket.”They got some momentum very early in the Powerplay, and then it is always hard to stop that,” Strauss said. “Those last 10 or 11 overs were a big momentum swing. We’d done a really good restricting job up to the 39th over; then they managed to wrestle that momentum away from us.”
