Sri Lanka Under-19 offspinner Rushan Jaleel has been reported for an illegal bowling action. Bruce Oxenford and Shahul Hameed, the on-field umpires during Sri Lanka’s 2010 U-19 World Cup warm-up match against Hong Kong at Hagley Park in Christchurch, reported the 19-year-old soon after the conclusion of the match. The bowler sent down seven overs, picking up 1 for 49.Jaleel’s bowling action will now be scrutinised under the ICC process relating to cricket other than Tests, ODIs and Twenty20 internationals. The bowler will be assessed by the Sri Lankan board in accordance with Clause 3 of the ICC regulations, whereby it will “instigate an immediate assessment of the bowler’s action by its group of advisors and arrange for the undertaking of any remedial action required by the player concerned.”The board will then be asked to report back formally to the ICC within 21 days, but if the board’s assessment concludes that the bowler’s action is illegal, he would be immediately suspended from bowling in international cricket.Until the result of the Sri Lankan board’s assessment is made available, Jaleel may continue to play and bowl in the main tournament, beginning tomorrow, but may still be called by the umpires in accordance with the laws.Sri Lanka have been placed in Group C of the 2010 Under-19 World Cup along with hosts New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Canada, and begin their campaign against Zimbabwe at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval on January 17.

Newcastle ended a run of three straight defeats with a 1-1 draw at home to Manchester United at St James’ Park on Monday night.

Defensively, the 25-year-old worked tirelessly. As per SofaScore, he won eight duels throughout the 90 minutes. He made a whopping four tackles, three interceptions and two blocks, showing that he was constantly winning the ball back for the Magpies, in the process halting Manchester United attacks and creating counter opportunities for Newcastle on the breakaway.

Offensively, he was a creator. As per SofaScore, he completed three of his four long pass attempts and one of his two dribbles. He also created four chances for his teammates and was perhaps a tad unfortunate not to end the night with an assist to his name.

His performance was so good that Newcastle content creator Adam Widdrington went as far as to describe him as “unplayable” on the night.

This shows that he is capable of putting in midfield displays full of quality from both a defensive and offensive point of view, which could bode well for the rest of the campaign. If he continues to impress in that role, it could be where his long-future lies at St James’ Park.

Pakistan’s parliamentary sports committee wants Shahid Afridi to be punished further for tampering with the ball during the fifth ODI against Australia in Perth last month. The committee told the PCB that Afridi, who is serving a ban of two Twenty20 internationals, had maligned the country’s reputation and such an offence warranted a harsher penalty.”If he [Afridi] bites the ball like an apple, there are lots of problems behind it,” Senator Haroon Akhtar told PCB chairman Ijaz Butt. “If you don’t take action this will happen again. The team lacks discipline and you got to rectify the problem.”Afridi was caught by TV cameras biting the ball on a couple of occasions. This was reported by the TV umpire to the on-field umpires who, after a chat with Afridi, changed the ball. Afridi pleaded guilty to the charge at a hearing with the match referee Ranjan Madugalle immediately after the game. He apologised and regretted his action and was banned for two Twenty20 internationals, the second of which is the first match against England on February 19 in Dubai.Butt, however, told the committee that the board could not punish Afridi further. “The ICC has told us clearly that you can’t punish a player twice for one offence,” Butt said. “Their lawyer has also suggested that if we handed more punishment to Afridi, and he challenges it in court, it will run the PCB into trouble.”Senator Tariq Azeem, though, countered by saying that selecting a player was at the PCB’s discretion. “The ICC can’t question you if you don’t pick him up in the national team,” he said. “You should not compromise the integrity of the nation. No player is indispensable. We should tell the world that we are not cheaters and we know how to deal with indisciplined players.”

The Verdict: Encouraging update…

As Barcelona seek to rid themselves of Coutinho’s £380,000-per-week salary and shave their sky high wage bill, news of Tottenham having the most leeway in negotiations comes as encouraging.

The former Liverpool star is a proven player in England’s top flight and an experienced international with 63-caps for Brazil, marking him out as someone who could inject real creativity into Conte’s side.

His ex-Anfield teammate, Glen Johnson, speaking via The Sport Bible, lavished the midfield ace as a ‘sensational player’ and ‘unbelievable’ recently – all whilst claiming Coutinho possesses ‘one of the best football brains you’ll see’.

He could be exactly what Spurs need in the final third as Conte aims to guide his new team to a top four finish.
