Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas is set for a move away from Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Giannis Chorianopoulos, with the journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that the 27-year-old shot-stopper looks to be on his way out of Parkhead, with the Bhoys looking to part ways with the Greek international this winter on either a temporary or permanent basis.

In his tweet, Chorianopoulos said: “Vasilis Barkas is about to leave from Celtic [in] January. On loan or permanent.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how little Barkas has featured for Celtic since his £4.5m move to Glasgow in the summer of 2020, in addition to, when the goalkeeper has featured, how poor the Greece international has looked for the club, the news that the shot-stopper is set to move onto pastures new this January will undoubtedly leave Celtic fans buzzing.

Indeed, over his 15 Scottish Premiership appearances last season, the £2.52m-rated ‘keeper made an average of just one save and conceded 0.7 goals per game.

These returns saw the 27-year-old earn a seasonal SofaScore rating of a mere 6.79, ranking him as the Bhoys’ joint ninth-worst performer in the top flight of Scottish football.

As a result of these disappointing performances, Celtic made a move to sign Joe Hart in the summer transfer window, with the former England international’s arrival all but confirming the end of Barkas’ career at Parkhead – with the shot-stopper having made just one appearance under Ange Postecoglou this season.

As such, considering the fact that the Greek international is still collecting his £9k-per-week wage in Glasgow, despite appearing to have very little chance of featuring for the Hoops once again, the news that Celtic are planning to offload the goalkeeper in the upcoming transfer window is undoubtedly positive for the club – as Barkas is rather stealing a living at present.

Amit Mishra, the 26-year-old legspinner, comes back to the limited-overs side after six years, edging out left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha for the second slow bowler’s spot.Mishra attributed his inclusion to his performance in this year’s IPL, where he took 14 wickets in 11 games at an economy rate of 7, and his role in India’s victory at the recent Emerging Players’ tournament in Brisbane.”My performance in IPL in South Africa, besides the recent Emerging Players tournament in Australia, has prompted the selectors to include me in the team and I promise I will live up to their faith if I get a chance,” he told PTI.”I bowled well in South Africa [during the IPL] in conditions that are more suitable for fast bowlers,” he said. “I adjusted to the conditions early there and I think the selectors have picked me keeping in mind that.”Mishra has cemented his place as the second spinner in the Test team, but several younger spinners including Ojha and Saurashtra’s Ravindra Jadeja have been tried in the shorter formats before the selectors picked Mishra again. “The selection in the ODI team is a reward for the hard work I have put in over the last few years,” he said. “I am really very happy because at last my struggle paid off. Sky Sports journalist Gordan Duncan has dropped an exciting update on Rangers’ managerial pursuit of Giovani van Bronckhorst as they look to quickly wrap up a replacement for Steven Gerrard.

They are close to agreeing that deal in principle. Talks have progressed, and the Rangers hierarchy are pleased with the progress that has been made.

“Van Bronckhorst has been the main name on everybody’s lips for the last week, and it certainly looks like Rangers are closing in on their man.”

The big fears for Gers fans after losing Gerrard to Villa, would have been a) would they be able to get someone just as good if not better than the man who left, and b) would it turn into a never-ending saga that threatens to completely destabilise their season.

What Ross Wilson and co have seemingly managed to do, is ensure that Rangers can head into the busy festive schedule with a new man in place and quite crucially, well ahead of the January transfer window where they can draw up plans with the new manager over who he wants to sign.

Van Bronckhorst’s previous spell at Ibrox will already leave him in some credit with the Ibrox faithful, and if he is appointed very soon, then he could have the perfect chance to endear himself even more into the supporters’ hearts with a victory over Hibernian in the Scottish League Cup semi-final this coming weekend. With two Dutch Cups to his name already, he seems to have a liking when it comes to domestic knock-out tournaments, meaning he could guide the Gers straight into a final if appointed by the weekend.

Thus, Duncan’s update that Rangers are “closing in” on the Dutchman is sure to have fans buzzing.

What’s the latest?

Both striker Patrick Bamford and versatile centre-back Robin Koch have been filmed doing ball work at the club’s Thorp Arch training base as they continue their recoveries from injury.

Bamford has been absent since the Whites’ 1-1 draw with Newcastle United in mid-September with an ankle problem, whilst Koch has not been seen since the opening game of the season, a 5-2 defeat to Manchester United.

Key Leeds duo

The 28-year-old forward hasn’t played in any of their last nine games in all competitions and his ability to hold the ball and score goals has been a big miss for Bielsa and the squad.

In his absence, the Argentine head coach has had to try a variety of solutions, to largely disappointing results, with the likes of Rodrigo, Daniel James, Tyler Roberts, Jack Harrison and academy gem Joe Gelhardt all getting opportunities to lead the line.

But understandably, none compare to the England international, who ended the 2020/21 season as their top goalscorer on 17 goals, some nine more than any other player (Harrison and Stuart Dallas, eight goals), as per WhoScored.

Meanwhile, the German has found life fairly tough since swapping Freiburg for west Yorkshire, starting 13 times in the Premier League last season, but his involvement against United certainly signalled Bielsa’s intentions that he would be a first-choice this term, so to not have him for the bulk of the campaign is certainly a blow.

Even more so as he’s capable of also playing in defensive midfield and on either flank as a full-back.

This sort of versatility would have been much-needed in recent weeks as Bielsa has had to contend with quite the injury crisis – even Rodrigo and Raphinha were missing for their 2-1 defeat to Spurs at the weekend.

Plenty of the Elland Road faithful were absolutely buzzing to see the Leeds pair back in training, as relayed by LeedsLive, and you’d imagine that Bielsa will be just as ecstatic back in Wetherby as he mulls over his team for Saturday’s clash with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Having both Bamford and Koch nearing a return is certainly a timely and big boost for the Yorkshire giants.

Ricky Ponting flew home for a break after the Ashes (and Tim Nielsen, the Australia coach, is currently on leave), while England have given Paul Collingwood and James Anderson time off. Collingwood said he felt his body was “shutting down” as various injuries started to catch up with him and the England players have told the PCA of their feelings ahead of a meeting of all the players’ unions in Johannesburg.The seven matches between England and Australia have struggled to capture the imagination of the public, with England performing so poorly, but Morris said their proximity to the Ashes battle meant the players were being pushed to the limits. “Seven ODIs has proved too much. Forty-eight hours after the Ashes, they were off to Ireland for a one-dayer and then onwards. Mentally people are getting into some pretty difficult places,” he told the Sunday Times.”If you want the guys to produce good quality cricket there needs to be a better balance between rest and play. At the moment they have practically got to drop dead to be given a rest.”The problem of scheduling has been increased by the growth of the IPL and other associated tournaments which add to the workload of international fixtures.
