Lee and Clark train sights on Strauss

Stuart Clark and Brett Lee are not yet assured of places in the starting XI for Cardiff, but that has not prevented them placing Andrew Strauss in the crosshairs for the summer

Stuart Clark and Brett Lee are not yet assured of places in the starting XI for Cardiff, but that hasn’t stopped them placing Andrew Strauss in the crosshairs for the summer. Australia’s senior pacemen, who began their quest for Ashes selection in Hove on Wednesday, applied the pressure on the England captain in a less demonstrative, more insidious manner to the naming-and-aiming approach favoured by their predecessor, Glenn McGrath, however the intent was just as clear.Clark and Lee have dismissed Strauss a combined nine times in 10 Tests, but their battles pre-date their international careers. Clark remembers Strauss as a batsman short on confidence in his days playing for Sydney grade club, Mosman, and hinted the Australians have uncovered modern-day glitches in his technique they will aim to exploit over the summer.”Andrew Strauss, being the captain, if we put some pressure on him early I reckon we can make some real inroads,” Clark said. “I’m not going to say I’m going to target him individually, but I think being captain there’s a lot of pressure on him now, if we can really get after him early on in the series we can maybe create some extra pressure that he maybe doesn’t need with his batting.”I played against him in grade cricket when we were much younger. I think he was a lot younger and didn’t believe in his batting as much then. He’s very good in English conditions, where probably the bounce isn’t as quick off the wicket as you get in Australia. He probably got found out a little bit in Australia in 06-07. I looked at some footage earlier and there are some definite things that we as a bowling group have talked about and we’re going to keep talking about.”Lee played alongside Strauss for Mosman between 1999 and 2001, and described him as a “class act”. But, like Clark, he also applied pressure on the England captain by reliving memories of past Ashes successes. Clearly, the summer’s phoney war has commenced.”I won’t choose any batsman as a bunny, I hate that, but I’m happy with the record I’ve got against Straussy,” Lee said. “I’ll be looking forward, if I get the opportunity, to play against him again. He’s a hard batsman to bowl to, but hopefully the success I’ve had against him, I’ll put that in the back of my memory bank and hopefully use it.”Clark and Lee are both returning from injuries that curtailed their Australian summers, and will be desperate to impress the selectors at Hove and Worcester. Clark has played a handful of Sydney grade and one-day international matches since undergoing surgery to his right elbow last November, while Lee has been limited to Twenty20 cricket for Australia and Kings XI Punjab after returning from an ankle operation. Both men recognise, however, that they are likely to be regarded as support acts to the main man of Australia’s current attack. “I think Mitchell [Johnson] is by far and away No. 1 and the rest of are competing, and it will depend up on what make-up they want to go with,” Clark said. “I will say that they need someone to bowl into the wind, and I have done that for 13 years.”We’ve all been doing this for a long time. I’ve been in and out of the team a few times at state level. It’s just the way it is. It’s the job. I’m getting to the stage now where the young guys want my spot. I suppose they had it in South Africa and I want it back.””Mitch and I complement each other well,” said Lee. “We’re a left and right-arm combination, two opening bowlers who can bowl over 150kmph. It’s a scary thought for any batting line-up, because no batsman likes facing a fast bowler on song, no matter what they say.”But if you’re not on the right spot, it’s money for jam, because the ball comes off the bat quicker, and goes to the fence quicker. You’ve just got to be confident and back yourself, and I’ll be giving myself every chance in my preparation.”

Wolves fans erupt over Jimenez milestone

A number of Wolves supporters have been showing their love for Raul Jimenez after he scored his 50th goal for the club against Everton.

Bruno Lage’s side made it four wins in their last five Premier League games on Monday night, deservedly beating the Toffees 2-1 at Molineux. Max Kilman opened the scoring for the hosts and Jimenez added a second with a lovely finish before Alex Iwobi reduced the arrears.

The Mexican’s goal was his 50th in a Wolves shirt, as he continues to thrive after overcoming a head injury from almost a year ago which threatened to end his career.

After Monday’s game, the club’s official Twitter account posted a message to show their appreciation for the 30-year-old, who remains a crucial player at Molineux.

Kevin Campbell backs Spurs to sign De Vrij

Kevin Campbell believes that Tottenham manager Antonio Conte will sign Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij in January, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Spurs’ centre-back options

The Italian, who tends to go with a back three system, has five senior centre-backs at his disposal at this moment in time.

Eric Dier and Cristian Romero have been used in his first two games in charge, along with left-back Ben Davies as a third centre-back. That has left no place for Davinson Sanchez, Japhet Tanganga or Joe Rodon, and it seems that he is after a marquee defensive addition in the New Year.

The Latest: De Vrij links; Campbell’s comments

Reports at the beginning of the month suggested that Conte wants Tottenham to sign De Vrij, with an A-list centre-back a top priority.

The 29-year-old, who was labelled a ‘monster’ by former Lazio defender Mauricio, was a regular under Conte during his time with Inter and is under contract with the Italian giants until 2023.

Campbell, who regularly features as a pundit for Sky Sports, was asked by Football Insider if De Vrij would be a smart signing. Although he questioned if Spurs needed a new defender, he backed Tottenham to get a deal over the line, if that is what Conte wants, saying:

“Do they need another centre-half? They have got numbers back there.

“Conte will have his own mind of what he wants to do and how he wants to play. They key is signing players who are going to make this team better. They don’t need bodies.

“If De Vrij is the one Conte’s wants, Spurs will go and get him. Conte is very ruthless like that. I’m sure we’ll see him in a Spurs shirt soon.”

The Verdict: Smart move?

De Vrij is a player Conte knows quite well from their mutual time at Inter, so he’ll be well aware of the specific attributes that the Dutch defender would bring to Tottenham along with his wealth of international experience.

With Davies being used out of position as a third centre-back, that could speak volumes in regards to Conte’s thoughts on Sanchez, Tanganga and Rodon.

If he doesn’t feel that the trio are good enough, then a marquee centre-back signing in the New Year could prove to be a shrewd decision, and it seems as if that man could well be De Vrij.

In other news: ‘The real winner’ of Conte’s appointment will still be sold in Spurs clearout, pundit predicts

Harmison 'desperate' to play Ashes

Steve Harmison, the England fast bowler, has said he is desperate to play in the remaining Ashes Tests as he has “unfinished business” with the Australians

Steve Harmison, the England fast bowler, has said he is desperate to play in the remaining Ashes Tests as he has “unfinished business” with the Australians. Harmison was left out of the Ashes preliminary squad but was named as a cover for Andrew Flintoff in an expanded second Test squad. However he did not feature in the XIs at Lord’s or Edgbaston.”The truth is that, much as I love playing for Durham, I’m desperate to play against Australia,’ Harmison was quoted as saying in the . “You can’t overestimate how desperate. I’d have given everything to have played at Lord’s, to be playing now in Birmingham and to play in Leeds.”Harmison took 6 for 20 as Durham beat Nottinghamshire by an innings and 102 runs last month and said the way he was bowling at the moment, he would be a handful against any opposition.”I’ll never forget winning in 2005 but I don’t want my last Ashes memory to be of 2006-07, neither for that first ball, nor the whole experience of losing 5-0. It took us 20 years to win the Ashes back in 2005 – and just 18 months to lose them. I’d like to think I could be part of winning them back.”Harmison denied rumors that he planned to retire at the end of the summer and was looking at the remaining Ashes Tests as a chance to get a farewell. “It may be that England do not see a future for me beyond the end of this summer. If that is the case, there is nothing I can do about it. But I’m not going to tell them I’m not available. It will be their decision if I don’t play for England again, not mine. I would like to get some idea of their thinking.”Before the Oval Test I would like to sit down with Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower and ask them for their honest thoughts. If it turns out I’ve got nowhere to go other than walking away, if they say, ‘At the end of the Ashes, we’re going to go in a different direction to plan for a couple of years’ time’, then fair enough.”Harmison said he did not see himself in England’s one-day plans for the future despite being named in the 30-man probables for the Champions Trophy. “But if they turn round to me and say, ‘Because Fred’s gone, we’re keen on you going to South Africa to play Test matches because of the option you give us once Fred’s not there’, then I’ll make every possible effort to go to South Africa six weeks before.” Harmison said he would then consider playing for a South African franchise before England’s tour to the country.”I think they will have to drag Fred away from Leeds by his hair to stop him playing at Headingley, but in the event that he or they are unhappy with his knee I feel the firepower I bring to the table gives them a solid option.”Andy Flower [England coach] said to me the other day, ‘We would never draw a line under you’. My response to that was, ‘I would never let you draw a line under me’. Until I felt it was right for them and for me, I would never voluntarily let him, the captain or the ECB draw a line under my name.”

Indians cruise to five-wicket win against Nicky Oppenheimer XI

Peter Robinson22-Jul-2009India tucked the first win of their South African tour into their kit coffins when they beat the Nicky Oppenheimer XI by five wickets in a gentle stroll at Randjesfontein on Monday. The Indians moved comfortably to victory after the home team had declared at 244 for three with the winning margin slightly misleading. Two of the Indian batsmen retired in a match in which the bat unquestionably held sway over the ball.and, if nothing else, Sachin Tendulkar’s form suggested he is well over the foot injury that sidelined him recently. It was, said Sourav Ganguly, “a lovely ground, a lovely wicket, a nice relaxed way to start the tour”.Ganguly was reluctant to read too much into what was, effectively, a practice outing, but coach John Wright said the two big pluses for the Indians were the bowling of Anil Kumble – “He looked good, he was pleased with the way he bowled” – and the batting of Tendulkar – “He looked good, too. It’s very much a confidence thing”.The NFO innings, which demonstrated the depth of young talent available to South Africa, was built around two century partnerships and a gem of a hundred from Jacques Rudolph, the 20-year-old Northerns opener who is tipped by many for higher honours.Rudolph and Loots Bosman put on exactly 100 for the first wicket after the home team batted first by mutual agreement between the captains. Bosman was the aggressor, spraying four sixes and four fours around the picturesque ground owned by the Oppenheimer family.Bosman carved out 62 off 77 balls before he tried to cut Anil Kumble and chopped it on at 100 for one.Rudolph, meanwhile, once again emphasised that among his considerable talents is the ability to pace an innings and in harness with Graeme Smith 117 was put on for the second wicket. In the process Rudolph moved to his hundred, a landmark he celebrated by heaving Kumble over mid-wicket for a huge six before holing out to mid on in the same over for 109. Smith went on to record the third half-century of the innings, reaching 54 before he was run out.The declaration came after a first session that lasted 187 minutes and 52 overs and was followed by a second session during which just 21 overs were bowled, the players coming back in for tea as the lunchtime crockery was still being gathered up.India managed 109 for two in this period, Tendulkar crunching 45 off 36 balls before falling leg before in Nantie Hayward’s first over, a decision which disappointed the crowd as much as it pleased Hayward.Sourav Ganguly compiled a more measured 34 before holing out to midwicket off the left-arm wrist spinner Goolam Bodi while SS Das breezed his way to 59 before retiring to let someone else have a go.As was the case in the NFO innings, the bowling lacked bite (with the possible exception of Hayward who might yet force his way back into the South African Test side this summer). The Indians, then, were seldom under any pressure against NFO part-timers and Dale Benkenstain and Rahul Dravid also retired himself out for 48.Virender Sehwag was the last wicket to fall, run out for 44, before Reetinder Singh Sodhi and Deep Dasgupta saw India home.

Ciente da dificuldade do desafio, o lateral Leandro Silva pede a atenção do time azurra.
