Leeds’ Bielsa makes Sam Greenwood decision

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has made a decision about Sam Greenwood amid speculation linking him with a move away.

What’s the story?

According to Football Insider, six Championship clubs, including the likes of Swansea and Bournemouth, tried to sign the teenager before transfer deadline day, only for Leeds to reject that interest.

It’s added that a Leeds source has revealed that Greenwood wanted to stay at Elland Road, and that was part of the reason behind why a decision was made at Thorp Arch for the Whites not to pursue a new striker in the summer transfer window.

Leeds fans will be buzzing

In his first season with the club, Greenwood managed 12 goals in 18 games, playing in a number of different roles, including up front, behind the striker and further back as a central midfielder.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has previously been very vocal in his praise of the youngster, saying: “He’s started really well at Leeds and he was very well thought of at Arsenal, and they weren’t rushing to get him out (of) the door this summer. From what we’ve seen of him so far, his movement and his finishing and everything else, he looks like a very natural striker.”

Meanwhile, Leeds Live’s Joe Donnohue said: “He may have hit the ground running at Thorp Arch, but he has only been here for a matter of months. His start may have been excellent, so imagine how much better he could be with consistent football.”

A better pathway to the first-team is surely one of the things that the Whites would have offered Greenwood when they initially signed him, and they can live up to that end of the bargain right now, especially now they’ve made the statement of turning down offers for him.

Given how Leeds fans are already on board with the 19-year-old, it’s surely the right call from Bielsa to keep him in his thinking at Elland Road and potentially give him a taste of first-team action.

Meanwhile, Leeds United have another academy sensation in this teenager…

Nineteen wickets fell on the second day at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad. Hosts Gujarat, currently third in Group A, lost their last five wickets for nine runs after play resumed, but recovered to bundle out Punjab and force the follow-on. Punjab were four down in the second innings, and it will take a lot of fight from their remaining batsmen to avoid defeat.Bhavin Thaker, overnight on 151, watched from the other end as Gujarat slumped to 299 for 9. He was the last man to be dismissed, out to Gagandeep Singh, who took a five-for. Gujarat’s opening bowlers, though, made sure their team didn’t rue the collapse too much.Ashraf Makda and Siddharth Trivedi took nine wickets between them to skittle Punjab out for 137. The best score among the top seven was 9, and the innings was in shambles at 16 for 7. The lower-order, though, nearly avoided the follow-on for Punjab. Charanjit Singh made 23 and Gagandeep scored 27, but it was No. 10 Manpreet Gony’s 69 that gave them hope. Six fours and five sixes came in 50 balls for Gony, but Makda snapped up the final two wickets in two overs to make Punjab bat again.Punjab’s top order managed double figures the second time around, but the inability to carry on left their team in further strife.Mohnish Parmar’s action was again called into question when, in the last over before tea, square-leg umpire U Dubey called Gujarat skipper Parthiv Patel for what looked like a serious discussion. Match referee Sanjay Patil declined to comment on the issue but told the : “I will be able to tell something on Monday after going through the video tape.”Parthiv, however, was all praise for his bowlers. “Siddharth is an experienced bowler and so is Makda, even Ishwar pitched in with two valuable wickets in the second innings,” he said. The pitch was in anyway not assisting the fast bowlers that much but they took advantage of the conditions today and utilised it to their advantage.”BCCI’s West Zone curator Dhiraj Parsana blamed the Punjab batsmen for getting themselves in trouble on what looked to be a sporting wicket. “We have the BCCI guidelines to prepare good sporting wickets,” he told . “It was a perfect four-day wicket, with a little bit of carry for the bowlers and where batsmen would enjoy both front-foot and back-foot strokes.””There was (average) grass cover. It was similar to the one for the India vs South Africa Test (played in April this year),” he said.Railways 118 for 5 (Goud 50*, RP Singh 3-65) trail Uttar Pradesh 346 (P Kumar 98, Raina 66, Chawla 47, Kartik 3-60, Sharma 3-73, A Singh 3-86) by 228 runs

Praveen Kumar missed his maiden first-class century by two runs at the Karnail Singh Stadium, but his team finished with a firm grip on the game in Delhi. Praveen scored 47 on the second day, taking UP from 278 for 8 to 346 with help from wicketkeeper Amir Khan, before RP Singh struck thrice. The last five wickets added 221 for UP, and it was captain Sanjay Bangar who got the breakthrough for Railways after a stubborn 77-run ninth-wicket stand. Murali Kartik ensured the last pair did not add to the total.Railways were lucky to finish the day at 118 for 5. They had slumped to 12 for 4; RP took three, including Bangar and Harshad Rawle for ducks, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar ended Milind Tamhane’s half-hour vigil for 2. Yere Goud and Karan Sharma held fort for over 25 overs as they added 60. Piyush Chawla broke the stand when he had Sharma caught behind during an economical spell, but Goud reached a half-century and carried on till stumps. With him was wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat, unbeaten on 28.Abhay Sharma, the Railways coach, acknowledged the difficult task at hand. “It’s difficult, we need partnerships to get out of the situation. But it’s not impossible as we have done it before,” he told the .

Another poor effort from Rajasthan’s batsmen spoilt a fine comeback from their bowlers at the Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Ground in Rajkot. Resuming on 270 for 5, Saurashtra were kept to 344, with fast bowler Pankaj Singh and left-arm spinner Gajendra Singh doing the damage. Pankaj finished with five – he had jolted the hosts, cruising at 206 for 1, with three quick strikes on the opening day.Pankaj completed his five-for early on the second day. Overnight centurion Bhushan Chauhan added only three runs before he was caught, and Rakesh Dhurv became the fourth to be caught behind off Pankaj. Sagar Jogiyani, resuming on 20, patiently worked his way to 49, getting a little support from the tailenders. Gajendra Singh prised out the final three wickets; he and Pankaj took nine between them.Rajasthan lost their openers cheaply, and the hosts chipped away at the wickets after that. There were scores of 36, 24, and 20 from Nos 3 to 5, but they failed to build on their starts as Rajasthan closed needing a further 89 to avoid the follow-on; they have five wickets remaining.

Baroda’s middle order came up with useful scores; however, none of them went on to make a big contribution as Maharashtra restricted their first-innings lead to 77 at the Moti Bagh Stadium in Vadodara. Two run-outs got rid of Yusuf Pathan and Pinal Shah when they were in the 50s, while Irfan Pathan, who took a five-wicket haul on the first day, was out for 51.Yusuf, whose brisk unbeaten innings had rejuvenated Baroda after they slipped to 24 for 3, ticked the score from the overnight 88 for 3 to 130 for 4 along with Azharuddin Bilakhia. Yusuf had helped himself to a 53-ball 58, with ten fours, before he was run out. Bilakhia was dismissed soon after, missing a half-century by two runs.At 130 for 5, the visitors would have sensed the chance of grabbing the first-innings lead, but Shah and Irfan took Baroda past 200. Irfan did not score as quickly as his elder brother, but had 11 fours in his 51. Shah dropped anchor at the other end, and even No. 8 Rajesh Pawar chipped in with 43. Baroda had reached 300 before Shah was the ninth man out; left-arm medium-pacer Samad Fallah ended the innings with his fifth wicket. Bad light prevented the start of Maharashtra’s second innings.

No play was possible on the first day, and Andhra made slow progress on the second. They went at a run-rate of 2.12, losing three wickets for 191 runs against Tamil Nadu, who began the game as favourites against the bottom-ranked team in Group B.Andhra’s openers put on 23 in 10.4 overs before LNP Reddy was dismissed by C Ganapathy. It was another ten overs before D Prabhu Kiran fell with the score on 38 and by the time C Suresh got rid of opener Hemal Watekar, Andhra were at 114 in 60.1 overs – Wateker played 171 balls for his 39, which included two fours and a six.The Tamil Nadu bowlers failed to take a wicket from there on. B Sumanth hit three fours in an unbeaten 70, while Gnaneswara Rao, the Andhra captain, was the most attacking batsman. His 43 not out included seven fours, and came at a strike-rate of 46.73 – the next-best was Sumanth’s 32.86.Delhi 78 (Khatua 3-17, B Mohanty 3-26, D Mohanty 3-25) and 150 (Narwal 66, D Mohanty 4-31, Khatua 4-58) beat Orissa 80 (Ishant 7-24, Awan 2-1) and 96 (Ishant 4-27, Narwal 3-25) by 52 runs

Dropped catches don’t come more poignant. With Delhi at 102 for 8, Niranjan Behera dropped a sitter from Sumit Narwal at deep fine leg. Orissa got a wicket next ball, but Narwal went on to score a match-changing unbeaten half-century. Had Orissa taken that catch, they might have been chasing 101, and in the end they were bowled out for 96 on a wet and green pitch that claimed 40 wickets in 128.5 overs. While Orissa were left to rue that missed chance, Delhi got their season back on track, taking five points, and also dangerous momentum, with them. (Click here for the full report.)

Issa Diop stars in West Ham’s UEL win

West Ham United opened their Europa League account with a bang as they won comfortably at Dinamo Zagreb to go top of the Group H table.

David Moyes’ side ran out 2-0 victors thanks to Michail Antonio’s fifth goal of the season, latching onto a defensive error in the 21st minute before Declan Rice netted a sublime solo goal five minutes into the second half.

Both players were obvious candidates for the ‘Man of the Match’ award, particularly the former, who ran the Croatian’s rugged with his tireless work rate.

He enjoyed two successful dribbles, won 100% of his ground duels and created three key chances. However, there was another, and perhaps more surprising name, who arguably stole the show.

Issa Diop was handed a rare start in defence alongside summer signing Kurt Zouma and he made the most of the opportunity.

As per SofaScore, the young French centre-back proved to be rather effective and industrious in the heart of the backline, where he recorded a squad and match-high of three interceptions.

This was also complemented by two tackles, one clearance and one block, combining an impressive ability to read the threat of the Croatian champions and displaying his physical attributes – something that once made former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho laud him as a “monster” for in 2018.

Diop, who is valued at £18m by CIES Football Observatory, even won 100% of his aerial battles, further reinforcing his imposing 6 foot 4 stature, whilst a passing accuracy of 85% suggests he did his job in playing out from the back, too.

Considering it was his first appearance of the 2021/22 campaign, the 24-year-old may have just given Moyes plenty to think about as he certainly shone in defence on Thursday night.

He struggled for minutes on the pitch last season, managing only 15 starts in the Premier League but after that display, he could well be in line for a permanent recall.

Forget the free-scoring Antonio, Diop deserves plenty of credit for his performance on the night.

Zimbabweans poised for win

An easy win is on the cards for the Zimbabweans, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board Academy having been reduced to 107 for 8 in pursuit of 304

Cricinfo staff07-Jan-2009
ScorecardAn easy win is on the cards for the Zimbabweans, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board Academy having been reduced to 107 for 8 in pursuit of 304. The bowlers dominated the second day as well – 16 wickets fell to add to the 22 on day one – but the tourists managed a respectable 273 in their second innings, a much better performance after they had been dismissed for 89 in the first. The worrying sign for the Zimbabweans was the failure of their middle order, with Nos 5-8 in the line-up failing to pass 10. Hamilton Masakadza, the captain for this game, and Tatenda Taibu resumed the innings at 113 for 2. The two added 52 before Masakadza was caught behind off Nazmul Hossain for 66. Taibu top scored with 70 off 90 balls and was the eighth man out. An unbeaten 27 from Ray Price boosted to total to 273. For the hosts, fast bowler Nazmul Hossain took a four-for, while Saqlain Sajib chipped in with three wickets. The BCB Academy had been shot out for 59 on Tuesday, and there was not much fight in their second innings barring Kamrul Islam and captain Naeem Islam. The duo put on 67 in 27.1 overs after the openers were out cheaply, but both failed to build on their starts. Price and Tawanda Mupariwa took seven wickets between them – three of Price’s four came in the penultimate over of the day.

Nuno must rue Spurs not signing Danny Ings

Nuno Santo will now surely be livid over Tottenham Hotspur’s failure to sign one of his top summer targets in Danny Ings…

What was the word?

During the off-season, The Telegraph’s Matt Law reported that the former Southampton striker was the Portuguese’s number one priority during the transfer window.

It was claimed that the 47-year-old wanted Ings to partner Harry Kane up top, rather than replace him, as he looked to switch the Lilywhites’ system to a two-man attack – something he had done at Wolves to varying degrees of success.

The 29-year-old had entered the final year of his contract at St Mary’s and reportedly rejected an offer of a four-year extension, as per Sky Sports.

Ings went onto join Spurs’ top-flight rivals Aston Villa in a £30m deal.

One that got away?

As expected, the vastly experienced talisman has already continued his fine form in front of goal and has emerged as a starter under Dean Smith.

In just four appearances, the three-time England international has found the net twice and even provided one assist, building on from his 13 goals and four assists for the lowly Saints last term, as per Transfermarkt.

A year earlier, the £18m-rated Ings hit 22 goals in 38 league games – his best-ever campaign in English football.

Spurs have struggled in front of goal so far this season. They may have won three of their four matches to sit just one point behind league leaders Manchester United but they have only amassed three goals from a trio of 1-0 victories and a heavy defeat to Crystal Palace in which they struggled massively in attack.

Nuno lambasted their creative and goalscoring problems as “a big concern” after the match and it would’ve surely made him ponder what might’ve been following the failure to sign Ings during the summer.

Heung-min Son, who is currently out injured, is the only Tottenham player to match the 29-year-old’s returns so far this season.

Once dubbed a “goal machine” and an “assist machine”, you can’t help but feel that things may have been different had Tottenham sporting director Fabio Paratici and co sealed a move for the 5 foot 10 talisman.

It could well be their biggest mistake of recent times, and Nuno must be livid over it.

AND in other news, Spurs make “incredible” £36m-rated monster their top 2022 target, Nuno would love him…

An old hand and a newcomer combined well for Bengal after a mid-innings wobble left them in a spot of bother against Goa on the first day of their Ranji Trophy Plate League semi-final at the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi. Robin D’Souza struck early for Goa after they decided to field, but Bengal fought back with a steady partnership between Anustup Majumdar and Wriddhiman Saha.Majumdar and Saha took Bengal past the 100-mark. Saha, who got his career-best 159 in Bengal’s previous game, scored 54 before he fell during a three-wicket burst from Saurabh Bandekar. Majumdar was also dismissed, for 39, as Bengal slipped for 101 for 1 to 105 for 4. Bandekar then added a fourth, that of Bengal captain Laxmi Shukla, to leave them at 127 for 4. However, Sourav Ganguly, the former India captain, made an impression in his first match since his international retirement at the end of the Test series against Australia. He scored a patient 146-ball 69, with seven fours and a six. At the other end, he got support from Dibyendu Chakrabarty, who scored his second half-century in as many innings at the first-class level. The two put on an unbroken 130 for the sixth wicket, with Chakrabarty scoring 75 off 134 balls. The match is likely to be Ganguly’s final first-class appearance. He was requested to return for the crucial knock-out fixture: Bengal’s promotion back to the Super League hinges on the outcome of this match.

In Nagpur, Himachal Pradesh wrested the advantage on the first day against Madhya Pradesh. Things started brightly for Himachal Pradesh, with left-armer Ashok Thakur removing Himalaya Sagar in the first over. However, captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar’s decision to bat seemed to be paying off. Kanitkar (23) and Jalaj S Saxena added 76 for the second wicket in 25.1 overs, and Devendra Bundela then played out 133 balls for his 32 in a 103-run stand with Saxena, who went on to score 107. However, Bundela’s wicket triggered a collapse. The last eight wickets fell for 48 runs; the best effort among the bottom six was 5. Saxena was bowled by Thakur; his century included 18 fours. Wicketkeeper Naman Ojha chipped in with 28, but the trio of Thakur, Malik and offspinner Sarandeep Singh brought the innings to a quick end. Thakur and Malik took four wickets apiece, while Sarandeep scalped the remaining two.
