Sheff Wed keen on signing Mendez-Laing

Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore is keen on signing Nathaniel Mendez-Laing this summer, according to Dom Howson.

The Lowdown: Great summer for Sheff Wed

The Owls may have suffered relegation from the Championship last season, but there is real positivity in the air at the moment.

Not only do Wednesday top League One after four matches, winning three games and drawing the other, but they have also enjoyed a hugely productive summer, signing a host of new names.

The Latest: Mendez-Laing interest confirmed

With deadline day approaching looming on Tuesday, the Owls’ business may not be done just yet, with Howson confirming Moore’s interest in free agent Mendez-Laing, in a Q&A for Yorkshire Live:

“I know he is someone that was mentioned to Wednesday earlier in the summer. I am led to believe that Moore likes him as a player. “The difficulty with all free agents is how long it will take to get them up to match speed. Mendez-Laing, for instance, has not got a pre-season under his belt so you could be looking at anywhere between six to eight weeks to get him fully fit and firing.”

Mendez-Laing spent last season at Middlesbrough, making just two Championship starts, and the 29-year-old may be desperate for a new challenge.

The Verdict: Another exciting addition

While Wednesday aren’t necessarily in desperate need of any more signings, bringing in Mendez-Laing can only help increase competition for places in wide areas.

The Englishman has a wealth of Championship experience, not to mention making 20 Premier League appearances for Cardiff City back in 2018/19.

It could be a shrewd addition, especially as no fee would be required to sign him.

Chennai Superstars displaced the Hyderabad Heroes from their No. 2 spot in the league by handing them their first defeat of the tournament. Led by Ian Harvey’s aggressive 49, Chennai set a target of 161 after which their bowlers kept Hyderabad down to 142 for 9 to complete an 18-run victory. At one stage it seemed like Chennai would reach a total in excess of 160 given the blistering start by Harvey. He got going by hitting Abdul Razzaq for three of the first ball of the innings and, in the second over, smashed Syed Sahabuddin over long on for the innings’ first six. There was a brief delay because of a floodlight failure but the break did not interrupt Chennai’s momentum. Harvey laid into Stuart Binny’s over, lofting him for two sixes over midwicket and long off. He then made the bowler pay dearly for overstepping twice, carting the two free-hits over the long-on and cow-corner boundaries. Chennai took 29 runs off the over and had reached 70 by the end of five.In a desperate attempt to curb the run-glut, Chris Harris brought on the spinner Inder Shekar Reddy in the sixth over and the ploy worked. Harvey was fooled by a slower one and got a leading edge which was caught by Harris at extra cover. Harvey was gone for 49 off 21 balls and his opening partner G Vignesh soon followed, caught by the wicketkeeper off Nicky Boje. The innings lost steam after that with wickets falling at regular intervals. Harris brought himself on in the 13th over and trapped R Sathish lbw with his second ball. He also bowled Hemanth Kumar and had R Jesuraj caught to finish with figures of 3 for 18 off four overs. Chennai had lost 10 wickets for 90 runs in 13.5 overs.Hyderabad were facing an asking-rate of eight and over but their run-chase got off to a disastrous start. Abdul Razzaq was caught in the second over off Jesuraj but the knock-out blow came in the next over when Jimmy Maher was caught by Harvey at short extra cover while trying to drive, and Ambati Rayudu was run out off a no-ball a couple of deliveries later. Hyderabad never recovered and had lost six wickets before passing 100. Boje was their top-scorer but his 38 took 49 balls as Hyderabad fell irrecoverably behind the required run-rate.

Everton transfer update on Richarlison

Many Everton fans have been left lauding a transfer update involving Richarlison.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match away at Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, Rafa Benitez claimed that the Goodison Park faithful are ‘not considering’ selling the Brazil international, and added that ‘hopefully he can score a lot of goals this year’ for them, further cementing their stance on the player.

There have been a number of recent reports linking Richarlison with a move to PSG should Kylian Mbappe end up going to Real Madrid, but it now seems as if he will be staying at the Merseyside club with just a few days left of the summer window to go, barring a remarkable offer.

The striker has got off to a good start in the 2021/22 season, scoring one goal and making one assist in two games in the Premier League (Transfermarkt), and will be a key player if the Toffees are to achieve their goals at the end of the campaign.

We hope Gambhir misses the Test – Hussey

Gautam Gambhir, who has appealed his one-Test ban for elbowing Shane Watson, is regularly on the lookout for a confrontation when he is batting, according to Michael Hussey

The India opener Gautam Gambhir, who has appealed his one-Test ban for elbowing Shane Watson, is regularly on the lookout for a confrontation when he is batting, according to Australia’s Michael Hussey. Gambhir, who is the leading run-scorer in the series with 463, was punished for his run-in with Watson on the opening day of the third Test in Delhi and also argued heatedly with Simon Katich.”He looks around for it [chat], to be honest,” Hussey said. “It hasn’t been a plan of ours to go at him and talk or whatever … but I must admit he does go around the field looking to engage certain players and looking to get involved and that sort of thing.”So maybe that is part of his character, looking for a clash to try to pump himself up a bit more. He’s always looking to engage, not so much ‘g’day how are you going’, but an intense look. It’s quite funny really.”Hussey said Gambhir reminded him of Justin Langer because he was a “small and punchy little character”. “He’s a very good player and probably someone who has exceeded our expectations about how well he has played,” he said. “We’re sort of hoping he’ll miss the last Test but I think he’ll still play pending his appeal.” The South Africa judge Albie Sachs has been appointed to handle Gambhir’s case.India lead the series 1-0 and Hussey has noticed extra confidence in the home side, which has not been afraid to have a dig at the visitors in the three Tests thus far. In Bangalore, Zaheer Khan called the Australians defensive, an accusation supported by VVS Laxman over the past week, while Gambhir successfully stirred his opponents, even before the elbow incident.”They have got a team that’s very, very experienced, a lot of seasoned, hardened international players and they know their games very well,” Hussey said. “They are quite confident about their games and perhaps in our team we haven’t got the 80-90-100-Test players they have. So they probably see themselves as a bit superior in the experience stakes and maybe aren’t scared of giving a little bit back.”Hussey was pleased Australia’s younger players had not been intimidated. “The good thing I have seen is the guys who have only played 15 to 20 Tests or less haven’t backed down from that,” he said. “They haven’t just taken it on the chin, they’ve been willing to bite back. We don’t want to go over the top, but if a guy is going to needle you you’re not going to back away from it.”

Leeds transfer target O’Brien set for contract talks

Leeds United have been handed a blow in their chase to sign Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien.

What’s the story?

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were unable sign the 22-year-old in the summer, with The Athletic’s Phil Hay reporting that the Whites simply did not want to pay the money that the Terriers were demanding – reported to be a fee in the region of around £8m.

And now, according to The Yorkshire Live, O’Brien is in talks with the Terriers over extending his contract at the club, amid speculation over that move to Elland Road in the summer.

The report added: “O’Brien signed his current deal in summer 2019 just before his emergence into the first team, and that deal is set to expire next summer – albeit the club hold the option to extend it by another year.

“Both parties would now like to ensure O’Brien’s deal is reflective of his value to Carlos Corberan’s side, which in turn would help protect his valuation in the transfer market should Leeds or any other club return with a renewed bid in future.”

Bielsa will be fuming

While Leeds managed to bring in a new first-team left-back in Junior Firpo, and a winger to challenge the likes of Jack Harrison and Raphinha in Dan James, one area of real concern on which they failed to deliver was a new central midfielder.

The decision to not match Huddersfield’s demands for O’Brien shines an even bigger light on the limited options Bielsa currently has, and the Leeds manager will be hoping and praying that the likes of Kalvin Phillips can stay injury-free.

This latest news that O’Brien is in talks over a new contract, in order to protect his value, is likely to ensure that the Terriers can demand a similar sort of fee that they were looking for in the summer, or even something much higher should they give him a much longer-term deal.

Bielsa has already shown that he is someone who will only sign players who fit his principles, and is quite willing to simply avoid players who he doesn’t fancy – Hay even recently suggested that while Victor Orta recommended Noa Lang, Bielsa wanted James, while the Leeds boss has also been understood to have turned down moves for the likes of Glenn Murray and Billy Sharp back in the Championship even when they needed a striker.

The fact that they were very interested in O’Brien means Bielsa is very keen on him, and thinks he would be a good fit at Elland Road. But, given the Whites opted against paying the fee needed to sign him in the summer, this latest update of a new contract is just another body blow and even bigger setback to their chances of signing him.

Bielsa will be fuming if O’Brien doesn’t end up at Leeds now.

Meanwhile, Leeds could sign an ideal Kalvin Phillips alternative in this star…
