Tínhamos 40 votos e as federações 27.

Celtic must battle to sign Freddie Woodman

If Ange Postecoglou didn’t already have selection issues heading into Celtic’s first competitive fixture next week, he certainly does now.

The Hoops drew 0-0 with their pre-season opposition on Wednesday evening but it was a clash marred with injuries.

On the chalkboard

Mikey Johnston earned a rare opportunity but had to be withdrawn early in the first half while Odsonne Edouard also sustained an injury against Charlton.

The Bhoys were already missing James Forrest due to his self-isolation period and he remains a doubt for their match with Midtjylland next week.

They could also be without Vasilis Barkas. The Greek stopper was injured in the warm-up and had to sit on the sidelines for the entire game.

He was pictured sitting next to the pitch with his fingers on his right hand severely strapped up.

The extent of his problem isn’t known but Celtic already have somewhat of a headache in his position.

Barkas missed a great deal of last season after he suddenly became number 2 to Scott Bain. His first campaign in Glasgow wasn’t an easy one as he was subject to a number of individual errors.

However, Bain and third choice ‘keeper Conor Hazard weren’t a pillar of solidity either, making their own mistakes.

Their £4.5m signing from last summer had been entrusted between the sticks against Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton but now faces a race to be fit for next week.

The solution

One of the areas Celtic needed to look at strengthening this summer was their goalkeeping department.

They’ve been linked with moves for Benjamin Siegrist and Mat Ryan but the latter has now departed Brighton for Real Sociedad instead.

Another target has been Freddie Woodman but there could be complications regarding a swoop for the Newcastle stopper.

Leeds are also interested in the 24-year-old but he was on the verge of joining Bournemouth on loan before the Magpies realised that Martin Dubravka had sustained an injury.

This may give Celtic an opportunity to weigh up a bid themselves and if they can conclude a deal, it would surely fix Postecoglou’s biggest headache.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

The new head coach would have a reliable man to replace Barkas next week and potentially aid their leaky backline throughout the entirety of 2021/22.

The £9m-rated Woodman has previously been described as “unbelievable” by Lee Clarke who coached him at Kilmarnock and it’s easy to see why; he’s a very safe pair of hands.

He didn’t miss a single game last season for Swansea, keeping 21 clean sheets during his 48 outings for the Championship side.

The Newcastle goalkeeper’s form in recent campaigns has also earned calls for him to be included in Gareth Southgate’s England set-up.

Clearly highly thought of, he’d be a wise signing for Postecoglou and co.

AND in other news, Celtic expected to launch bid for 23 y/o who “terrifies defenders”, he’s a big upgrade…

Surrey well-placed for another championship win

Championship leaders Surrey enjoyed a good second day at The Oval after the frustrations of rain on the first

Ralph Dellor11-Jul-2002Championship leaders Surrey enjoyed a good second day at The Oval after the frustrations of rain on the first. Mark Ramprakash enjoyed a very good day, for he went on to 210 not out as Surrey made 475. Rikki Clarke helped him add 175 for the sixth wicket before he was out for 79 – one of Dougie Brown’s wickets as he finished with seven for 110. It was a very good day for Brown as well. It was not so good for Warwickshire’s batsmen as they finished on 120 for five. There is no doubt that third-placed Hampshire enjoyed the better of the second day against second-placed Leicestershire. In reply to Hampshire’s 311, Leicestershire made 98 for five on a rain-affected day of only 63 overs. Not exactly riveting watching.Neither was the fare on offer at Scarborough, for followers of Yorkshire, at least. Somerset went on to declare on 498 for nine, with Rob Turner making 63 and Keith Dutch 74 as the pair added 130 for the seventh wicket. Off-spinner Richard Dawson took four wickets. In reply, Yorkshire were 46 for the loss of Matthew Wood at the close.Ed Smith went on to 141 not out as Kent reached 349 all out against Sussex at Hove. Amjad Khan, who had taken six wickets in the Sussex innings, added 58 going in at number nine. Sussex were 114 for three in their second innings, still trailing by 90.In Division Two, Worcestershire are in a commanding position against leaders Essex. They were 332 for six at the close of the second day, leading by 135. Anurag Singh made 124 and Vikram Solanki continued his good form with 56.It might be early to say so, but Middlesex and Gloucestershire could be heading for a draw. After Gloucestershire had made 388 in their first innings with Kim Barnett carrying his bat for 182, the Middlesex openers had reached 98 at the close. Andy Strauss is 56 not out as his side trail by 290.115 from Guy Welton and 88 by Usman Afzaal helped Nottinghamshire to a first innings lead of 115 over Glamorgan for whom Mike Kasprowicz took five wickets. With three catches for wicket-keeper Chris Read in Glamorgan’s second innings, they have reached 69 for three to end the day still 46 in arrears.Derbyshire’s run of success – and Durham’s run of failure -could be over. Durham lead by 264 with four second innings wickets in hand after extending their second innings to 169 for 6. Nicky Peng is top scorer so far with 57.

Me sinto fazendo parte do grupo e procuro fazer o meu.

Everton: Benitez approves Nunes pursuit

Everton are reportedly set to revive their interest in Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes after new manager Rafael Benitez gave his approval over the potential signing.

What’s the story?

The Toffees looked set to secure the 22-year-old’s signature last week before their manager took a closer look at the youngster’s credentials.

It now appears Nunes is finally going to become an Everton player, with Benitez ‘willing to receive him’ in a deal which could reach €20m (£17.3m), according to Portuguese newspaper Record (as relayed by Sport Witness).

Big upgrade on Andre Gomes

Nunes may not be a household name on English shores, but the Brazilian maestro is a highly-rated talent with bags of potential. He started just 12 top-flight fixtures for Sporting last season but came off the bench on many occasions, heavily contributing to the capital club’s first league title in 19 years.

The South American has cultivated an enviable reputation for his ball carrying skills, completing 1.2 dribbles per game throughout 2020/21, with only four Everton players outperforming him on that particular metric.

He’s also capable of contributing at the top end of the pitch, scoring three goals and providing three assists in 39 appearances for Ruben Amorim’s men.

With current Everton midfielder Andre Gomes linked with a possible exit, the statistics suggest that Nunes would be a significant upgrade on the former Barcelona ace.

Gomes failed to score in the 2020/21 campaign, laid on just two assists and completed 1.1 dribbles, falling below Nunes’ output, as per WhoScored.

Therefore, this is a prospective transfer which should excite the Merseyside faithful. Benitez appears to be on the verge of tying up deals for Andros Townsend (30)and Demarai Gray (25), but neither of those seem as exciting as the prodigious Sporting starlet, whose style has been likened to Toffees midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Finishing inside the top six will surely be the aim for Benitez next season, and signing Nunes could certainly help the former Real Madrid boss achieve that goal.

SPCL players aplenty as Hampshire CB meet Wiltshire

Kevin Nash and Luke Ronchi share the same Bashley-Rydal dressing room every Saturday – but next Thursday they’ll be the deadliest of rivals in a key Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy 2003 first round tie at Hursley Park

Mike Vimpany25-Aug-2002Kevin Nash and Luke Ronchi share the same Bashley-Rydal dressing room every Saturday – but next Thursday they’ll be the deadliest of rivals in a key Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy 2003 first round tie at Hursley Park.Pace bowler Nash and his Australian team-mate will be on opposite sides when Wiltshire play the Hampshire Cricket Board in what amounts to the first of two qualifying matches for next season’s C & G Trophy.Nash will be taking the new ball for the Moonrakers, with Ronchi, signed up as the HCB’s overseas player, batting at four for the Hampshire team.”I’ve never bowled to Luke in a match situation; only in the nets,” Nash said.”He’s obviously the Hampshire danger man – and potential match-winner – as he plays his shots and scores so quickly.”If the ball’s there to hit, he will – and very hard.”But Nash knows his Perth buddy is not infallible. “Luke is always likely to give a chance, as he tends to be a bit loose and hit the ball in the air every now and then….,” he added. The Hampshire Cricket Board have a double incentive to beat their Wiltshire neighbours in the qualifier at Hursley Park, which starts at 11 o’clock and admission for which is free. For starters, there’s the incentive of a home tie against Staffordshire in the second round but, more significantly, the knowledge that, should they lose, the bulk of the Board team will never play representative cricket again.Among radical changes announced by the ECB, Board teams will not be allowed to participate in the C & G Trophy after the 2003 season. And, in addition, the 38 County (Board) Championship, under its present guise, is to be scrapped, leaving top recreational cricketers in First Class counties without any representative cricket at all.Frank Kemp, the ECB’s Cricket Operations Manager (Recreational) confirmed that “from the 2004 season, entry to the C & G Trophy will be restricted to one team from the 18 First Class counties, in addition to the 20 Minor Counties, plus Denmark, Holland, Ireland and Scotland.”No entry for Board teams like Hampshire into the country’s top 50-over competition means that, theoretically, top club cricketers like Dan Goldstraw, Paul Gover and the like will no longer have the opportunity to pit their skills against the top pros, unless the transfer their allegience to neighbouring Minor Counties. The ECB is also to scrap the existing two-day Under-19 County Championship – which Hampshire won several seasons ago and are semi-finalists again this term – and to introduce an age limitation into a new-look one-day 38 County Championship.”The age limitation will be Under 21, with up to two ‘over-age’ players allowed to play in each team,” Kemp clarified.Next season’s reshaped 38 County Board Championship will continue on a geographic eight-group basis leading to quarter, semiand final matches.”This change reflects the ‘developmental’ aspects of much County Board cricket and the fact that Under 19 cricket does not consistently involve the best players of this age, who are often playing County 2nd XI cricket,” Kemp explained. It is anticipated that the majority of matches will be played when school and university players are available, ie from June onwards. The ECB’s plans met with considerable opposition – none more so than from Hampshire themselves – but appear to have fallen on deaf ears.”These changes are seen as a big disappointment to the best Hampshire club cricketers who aspire to represent their home county, both in the 38-county competition and in the C & G Trophy,” said HCB Administrator Colin Savage.”At a time when the ECB is aiming to support and encourage cricket clubs – an important part of its National Strategy – this can only be seen as a big backward step.”It also removes the opportunity for the County Board to achieve a home tie in the third round and raise extra revenue for its crucial role in cricket development.”Wiltshire have named five Southern Electric Premier League players in their side.South Wilts opener Russell Rowe and Winchester’s Jimmy Taylor will be in the top order batting positions, with Bashley-Rydal’s Kevin Nash spearheading the Moonraker’s attack.Paul Draper (South Wilts) and Calmore’s James Hibberd are named as the two all-rounders in the Wiltshire side.Hampshire are weakened by the absence of top BAT wicket-taker Dan Goldstraw and Havant opener Andy Perry.Hampshire CB: Paul Gover (capt), Mackie Hobson, Richard Hindley (Havant), Roger Miller (Andover), Damian Shirazi, Dave Banks, Richard Dibden (BAT Sports), Lee Savident (Portsmouth), Dave Greetham (Normandy), Luke Ronchi (Bashley), Danny Peacock (Lymington).

Sky Sports drop West Ham takeover claim

Speaking live on air (via Football Daily), broadcast giant Sky Sports have now dropped a West Ham United takeover update.

The Lowdown: West Ham prospective buyers attempt swoop?

As first reported by the Daily Mail, a group of investors based in the United Kingdom have made a takeover bid for West Ham – reaching around £400 million.

Sources close to this development say the prospective takeover bid would’ve injected much-needed transfer funds into the club and hugely benefit manager David Moyes, all while transforming the surrounding area with outside investment.

After having their offer rejected by majority shareholder David Sullivan, the consortium which includes former QPR chief executive Philip Beard apparently remain determined to strike a deal.

The Latest: Sky Sports drop takeover update live on air…

Sky Sports, speaking live on air, have now dropped their own update after this development and shed light on the situation.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-news/” title=”West Ham news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

According to the broadcaster, GSB still ‘do not want to sell’ and any interested party must prove they have the finances to take West Ham to the next level.

“West Ham’s owners have turned down an informal approach to buy the club,” they explained (via FD).

“The offer lead by the former QPR chief executive Philip Beard was rejected because it was vague and not in the best interests of the club we’re told.

“David Gold and David Sullivan bought West Ham in 2010 and have regularly been approached by prospective buyers, now we’re told they do not want to sell, and anyone wanting to make a bid would need the finances to take West Ham to the next level.”

The Verdict: Disappointing?

Friction between West Ham fans and the club’s owners is no secret and there have been large protests past seasons over their decision making and how the Hammers are run (Evening Standard).

In particular, a large section of fans were disappointed at West Ham’s progression since they were asked to leave their spiritual home of Upton Park for the London Stadium – with the board previously promising a world class team and failing to deliver (The Guardian).

While they have qualified for the Europa League group stages next campaign, it was arguably very unexpected given the lack of investment and more a real overachievement by manager David Moyes.

As such, there may be a fair number of Irons fans who are disappointed by this latest update from Sky.
