St Cross still in SPCL3 hunt despite defeat to Alton

St Cross Symondians are still in the thick of the Southern Electric Premier League, Division 3 leadership struggle – despite losing by 57 runs to promotion rivals Alton at the Royal Green Jackets Ground

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)23-Jun-2002St Cross Symondians are still in the thick of the Southern Electric Premier League, Division 3 leadership struggle – despite losing by 57 runs to promotion rivals Alton at the Royal Green Jackets Ground.Three of the top four sides lost, with leaders Purbrook piling up 274-7 only to crash to a six-wicket defeat by lowly Paultons, and New Milton suffering a mass batting collapse before losing by 12 runs at neighbours Bashley (Rydal) II.Flamingo threw their name into the hat at the top by overhauling Hambledon’s 219-6 to win by five wickets.St Cross produced a languid performance and were always second best against Alton, who controlled the game after being offered first use of a placid surface at the pleasant, tree-lined army ground. The visitors cashed in on some generally uninspiring St Cross out-cricket and happily motored along at a rate of five runs or more an over before a pre-tea assault, which yielded 51 runs from the last seven overs, took them to a lofty 252-5.St Cross got to 106-1 off 29 overs, but were never able to force the pace against an Alton side which batted, bowled and fielded better on the day. They withered to 196 all out before conceding a 57-run defeat."It was a disappointing performance. We bowled far too many four balls and didn’t do ourselves justice at all," agreed St Cross skipper Matt Perry-Lewis.Stuart Charman produced a useful new-ball burst, removing the forceful Richie Morgan at 37-1.But he badly missed the support of miserly left-arm seam partner Paul Stringer, who may have to retire prematurely from the game because of a long standing shoulder problem. In his absence, Alton opener Michael Heffernan generally bossed most of the afternoon session, punishing anything over-pitched and gleefully tucking into anything dropped short that sat up and begged to be hit. There was all too much of that for St Cross’s comfort – all four of Charman’s bowling partners suffering from a lacklustre day at the office.Heffernan, finding the gaps on the spacious outfield, hit a six and ten fours in an accomplished 82 – his innings disappointingly ending at 162-4, with a deserved maiden century for the 22 year old in sight. But there was to be no reprieve for St Cross, whose attack suffered more punishment, initially from Alton skipper Julian Ballinger (38), but more so from the tall South African Bruce Oliphant, who led the last ten-over blitz.Oliphant, who moved to Alton from Durban six years ago, used his height and reach to great effect, launching a series of aerial shots which the St Cross fielders were unable to counter.Twice he lofted straight sixes in a breezy 51 not out as Alton gorged 51 runs off the last seven overs to finish with an impressive 252-5.St Cross, needing to score at five runs an over from the start, didn’t get the opportunity to feast off as many bad balls.Alton bowled a much tidier line, pegging St Cross to 50 runs off the initial 15 overs and 91-1 at the 25-over drinks break.New Zealander Mark Parker (56) played some exquisite shots off his legs but his 84-run second-wicket partnership with Steve Shaw (23) was never one of dominance. That owed much to Julian Ballinger’s nagging leg-stump line that eventually frustrated the dangerous left-handed Shaw into a `hit out or get out’ policy.Shaw’s departure at 106-2 in the 29th over was the beginning of the end for St Cross, who began to lose wickets to Howard Gadsby (4-46) and Oliphant (3-22).The Winchester club dipped to 169-9 – the father and son Heffernan trio having a hand in six of those wickets – before a late flurry by teenager Chris Edwards took St Cross on to 196 all out.

Forget Smith Rowe: Villa should sign Michael Olise

Aston Villa should look to sign Reading starlet Michael Olise instead of Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe this summer.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent months had suggested that the French talent is on Dean Smith’s radar as the manager looks to rejuvenate his Villa squad with younger talent, but it now appears that they could be set to lose out on his signature.

According to The Athletic’s Matt Woosnam, it’s fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace who are set to sign the 19-year-old, as they look to overhaul the squad for new manager Patrick Vieira at Selhurst Park.

Dream Barkley upgrade

Hailed as “super talented” by Reading manager Veljko Paunović, the teenager has been widely hailed for his skill, with Jose Gomes – his former boss at the Madejski Stadium – adding: “Michael is really special. He can see, even before receiving the ball, more options than regular players. His technical ability and speed, decision capacity is really, really good.”

That speed of thought and end product is significantly better than what Ross Barkley produced last season in the Premier League while on loan at Villa.

Olise, recorded 12 assists in the Championship alone last term, as well as adding a further seven goals to his name while the £13.5m-rated teenager also ranked in the top ten for most fouled players per game in the Championship, and was second for key passes in the division.

Barkley on the other hand, managed just three goals in the top-flight and one solitary assist, while he also had his issues with injury too – Olise by contrast, missed just two of his side’s 46 Championship games.

With The Athletic’s David Ornstein recently claiming that Arsenal are adamant Smith Rowe won’t be going anywhere, Villa would surely be better off turning their attentions to a target more achievable in Olise.

With Palace however in the driving seat, Johan Lange and co must strike quickly and bring in a target who Smith was looking at potentially signing back in the January transfer window.

With Barkley having gone back to Chelsea after a hugely underwhelming loan spell, Villa could sign a dream upgrade on the 27-year-old in the much younger, and more exciting Olise this summer.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa could wreak havoc with this signing…

Caixinha makes Gers Pena admission

Former Glasgow Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha has revealed that both he and the club were aware of Carlos Pena’s drinking problem when he arrived at Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Pena’s short spell at Ibrox

Pena made the move to Ibrox from Club Leon in 2017 for a fee of £2.2m (The Daily Mail) after impressing in his home country of Mexico.

However, the now-31-year-old managed just 14 matches in all competitions – although he did score five goals (Transfermarkt) – before his drinking issues became too much of a problem. The Gers duly cancelled his contract 18 months after his arrival in Glasgow.

The Latest: Caixinha makes admission

Speaking to The Rangers Review, Caixinha has admitted that he was aware of Pena’s problems. The former Gers manager said:

“When I arrived in Mexico (between 2012 and 2014), Carlos was the most incredible midfielder.

“He was really, really incredible. Goalscorer, up and down, defending, attacking, he was really incredible. Massive player, a lot of technique, a lot of physicality.

“After that, he passed through some problems and he could not deal with what he achieved.

“He passed at one stage he was having drinking problems, it was totally known.

“And when we contacted the previous teams and previous coaches in Mexico, they told me he still had a little bit of the problem but he’s much better.

“And he’s much better with a will to change.

“I’m not going to lie to you, he didn’t arrive totally clean. But we clean him up.

“If you remember one of the last games we played against St Johnstone – which we win 3-0 and he scored twice – that was the Carlos.”

The Verdict: Risk which didn’t pay off

You must appreciate Caixinha’s honesty. He himself had a terrible spell at Rangers, lasting less than a year as he became the shortest-serving permanent manager in the club’s history, being associated with a 5-1 home drubbing by Celtic and the ignominious Europa League qualifying exit to Progres Niederkorn (BBC).

Clearly, in regards to Pena, he took a risk which just didn’t pay off – the decision was perhaps emblematic of his time in Scotland.

With those five goals, Pena did show glimpses of his capabilities. However, in the long run, less than total dedication to his craft was always going to be a major obstacle. In the end, it is probably a time all involved with the Gers would rather wish to forget.

In other news, many Rangers fans were fuming over this club tweet.
