Man City suffer Jack Grealish transfer blow

Manchester City’s hopes of signing Jack Grealish this summer have taken a blow after Chelsea reportedly joined the race to sign him from Aston Villa, which will surely be a cause of frustration for Citizens manager Pep Guardiola.

City have been regularly linked with the England international ahead of the summer transfer window and have been touted as the favourites to sign the 26-year-old, despite heavy interest from local rivals Manchester United.

However, their chances of signing him this summer have been narrowed after fellow Premier League side Chelsea joined the race for his signature ahead of next season, with reports suggesting that the Stamford Bridge outfit are now best placed to bring him in.

Grealish enjoyed a phenomenal season for Dean Smith’s side, contributing six goals and 10 assists in 26 Premier League appearances, which helped him average a superb 7.56 rating from WhoScored for his performances in the top-flight.

Considering only Harry Kane and Kevin De Bruyne would be rated higher across the season, it is easy to see why the winger is attracting so much interest ahead of the summer, and strong performances for England at the European Championships this summer will surely only increase his value further.

Guardiola is certainly a big fan of the Villa captain too, as he sang his praises in 2019, saying:

“He’s incredible. A top player. I’m happy he [initially] stayed in the Championship to defend his club.

“He’s a talented player who always creates something. An exceptional player but too expensive for Manchester.”

However, with a rebuild on the cards at Manchester City this summer, they may well now be able to afford the “unbelievable” Grealish, so a move to the Etihad certainly isn’t impossible.

Unfortunately for City, spending money won’t be an issue for Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich this summer after Thomas Tuchel helped the Blues win the Champions League last season and Grealish may well be tempted to join the West London side, who will surely be one of the contenders to challenge City in the Premier League next season.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936″]

Guardiola will be hoping that City still hold the edge but sporting director Txiki Begiristain will have to act quickly if he wants to sign Grealish this summer.

And, in other news… City suffer huge transfer blow with “world-class” former PL-beast, Pep surely fuming

The previous record was on the name of Hansie Cronje with 17 appearances. The match was 17th for Lara and Hooper against South Africa which makes them the most experienced West Indians against South Africa. Both of them were earlier at level with Curtly Ambrose with 16 matches.Gary Kirsten was playing his 150th match. He became third South African after Jonty Rhodes (195) and Hansie Cronje (188) and 55th player in the world to do so.The second wicket partnership of 179 runs between Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis was South Africa’s best for any wicket against West Indies. This obliterated the previous highest of 162 between Gibbs and Hansie Cronje at Port Elizabeth on 30-01-1999. Incidentally the previous highest second wicket partnership for South Africa against West Indies was worth 97 between Andrew Hudson and Daryll Cullinan at Karachi on 11-03-1996.This partnership was also the highest for second wicket by any side against West Indies in all ODIs-home or away beating the 166 run-partnership between Pakistan’s Majid Khan and Zaheer Abbas at The Oval on 20-06-1979.The partnership was also the highest for any wicket for any side against West Indies in West Indies bettering the 172 unbroken fifth wicket partnership between Darren Lehmann and Michael Bevan for Australia at Grenada on 14-04-1999. Incidentally the previous highest second wicket partnership against West Indies in West Indies was 130 run between Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid at Arnos Vale on 30-04-1997.Gibbs (104) scored his fourth hundred in 65th matchhis second in seven matches against West Indies. His innings was the highest for South Africa against West Indies on latter’s soil. The previous highest was Andrew Hudson’s 50 at Kingston on 07-04-1992 which was the first ever match between these two sides. Incidentally Gibbs also holds the record of playing the highest individual innings for South Africa against West Indies-home or away. He had scored 125 at Port Elizabeth on 30-01-1999.Nixon McLean by conceding 40 runs in his four overs achieved the dubious distinction of recording most expensive figures by a West Indian in a four over spell in all ODIs. The previous record was on the name of Shivnarine Chanderpaul who conceded 36 runs in his four overs against Sri Lanka at Sharjah on 16-10-1995. The previous worst analysis for West Indies in a four over spell against South Africa was on the name of Neil McGarrell who gave away 31 runs at Port Elizabeth on 30-01-1999. McLean's economy rate (10.00 runs per over) was also the worst by any West Indian bowler bowling atleast four overs in a match. Ian Bishop had conceded 49 runs in his five overs (9.80 runs per over) against Sri Lanka at Port-of-Spain 13-04-1996.McLean's analysis was also the worst by a bowler in a four-over spell against South Africa. Sri Lanka's Dilhara Fernando had conceded 38 runs at Bloemfontein on January 14 this year. The victory margin of 8 wickets was the largest for South Africa against West Indies. The previous largest win for South Africa against West Indies was by six wickets at Port Elizabeth on 11-03-1993.The victory margin of 8 wickets was also the largest for any side against West Indies in West indies. Pakistan had beaten the hosts by seven wickets at Port-of-Spain on 27-03-1993 (though India defeated West Indies at Port-of-Spain on 27-04-1997 with all ten wickets intact, the target was reduced, hence `technically' India's performance does not fall in the same category as that of South Africa).Gibbs was winning his fourth Man of the Match award.

Southampton handed Nuno Tavares boost

Southampton’s hopes of signing Nuno Tavares this summer have been handed a boost after it was reported that Benfica are willing to sell the young defender for far less than his release clause amid interest from across Europe.

According to various Portuguese news outlets (via Hampshire Live), the Portuguese giants are willing to sell the 21-year-old for just €15m (£13m) this summer, despite an €88m (£75m) release clause in his contract.

The likes of Newcastle United, Brighton, Lazio and Napoli have also been credited with an interest in the Portuguese full-back, which suggests that Southampton will have to act quickly if they want to bring him to St Mary’s this summer.

The young defender has made just 41 appearances for Benfica in his senior career but has impressed in that time, contributing one goal and seven assists.

He has primarily featured as a left-back but can also play in left-midfield or right-back, which suggests that he could be a good back-up to Kyle Walker-Peters and Romain Perraud, who is reportedly close to signing from Stade Brest, in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side next season.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

Although Tavares would make just 14 appearances in the Liga NOS last season, he clearly has a huge amount of potential, with his agent Cesar Boaventura singing his praises earlier this year, describing him as “one of the fastest players in the whole Portuguese league”, whilst he also claimed that “he can become one of the best in Europe”.

Therefore, the Portugal U’21 international could be an excellent signing for the future at St Mary’s and would arrive with more pedigree than the likes of Yan Valery and Jake Vokins, who emphasised last season that they are not ready to be the second choice options for Hasenhuttl at right-back and left-back respectively.

Although he would cost marginally more than the £10m or less Hasenhuttl suggested Southampton would target players for this summer, the fact that Benfica have lowered their asking price means this is an opportunity that is too good to turn down for Saints CEO Martin Semmens, so he should definitely look to bring him to St Mary’s ahead of next season.

And, in other news… Southampton handed huge boost with “explosive” star, Semmens must deliver

Regional conflicts mar Busta Cup

Regional cricket associations have been knocked for seemingly withholding their best players from representing the West Indies ‘B’ team in the Busta Series

Haydn Gill07-Mar-2002Regional cricket associations have been knocked for seemingly withholding their best players from representing the West Indies ‘B’ team in the Busta Series.Additionally, team captain Roland Holder feels the cream of the regional Under-23s, with the exception of Test players, should be made to play for the ‘B’ team if it is to make a greater impact.A lot of the territories need to be honest in their nominations for the ‘B’team if it is going to serve the purpose for which it is intended, the experienced former Barbados batsman told NATIONSPORT yesterday. We had a couple of players who could not make their national trials or, in the case of one or two from the Leewards and Windwards, who could not make their national side.It was Holder’s forthright view that a player who is put forward to represent the West Indies ‘B’ team should be someone who is on the verge of making his national team.I think most territories have selected their 16, kept the best of the reserves and then sent basically what has not been a true representation of this team.As a reference, he pointed to Guyana fast bowler Reon Griffith who was kept in their 13-man squad for the first five matches. Griffith did not play a single match and was only released to the ‘B’ team for the sixth round.I know all the territories want to win . . . [but] it is all about the development of West Indies’ cricket, said the 34-year-old Holder, who played successfully for Barbados in regional competition between 1986 and 2001.In cases like that, I think we need to be honest with ourselves.West Indies ‘B’, which is participating in the Busta Series for the second successive year, are languishing at the bottom of the table ahead of their final match against Barbados, starting tomorrow at Kensington Oval. However, there have been encouraging signs, among them centuries from Guyanese Krishna Arjune and debutant Donovan Pagon. For a team which has passed 250 in six of their 11 innings and has only been dismissed for fewer than 200 on one occasion, four defeats in six matches might not been an accurate reflection of their performance.Defeats will always be defeats. It means that you didn’t play better or as well as the opposition, Holder said.We have been batting reasonably well consistently. We have scored on average 500 runs per game. The only problem is that we tend to score most of those runs in the second innings. By then it’s usually playing catch-up cricket.Holder described the overall performance of the team as indifferent. It is very difficult under this present structure to get the sort of results you are looking for granted I’ve seen lots of improvements in all of these players, he said. What needs to happen is that the WICB (West Indies Cricket Board) decides that the best Under-23 side, excluding those who have played Test cricket, be selected to play as this team.Under such a proposal, promising players such as prolific Windward Islands opener Devon Smith, West Indies youth captain Narsingh Deonarine, Barbadian fast bowler Tino Best and fellow pacer Darren Powell of Jamaica would have to play for the West Indies ‘B’ ahead of their national sides.

English innings provides example for New Zealand

England scored 30 runs more than New Zealand wanted on the first day of their National Bank Test at Christchurch’s Jade Stadium

Lynn McConnell13-Mar-2002England scored 30 runs more than New Zealand wanted on the first day of their National Bank Test at Christchurch’s Jade Stadium.New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming, who dropped England captain and century maker Nasser Hussain when he was on 52, said he should have picked up the chance despite not picking it up early enough. But nine times out of 10 he would have expected to have taken it.However, Fleming believes that if the top order batsmen can see off the new ball tomorrow in conditions that will favour the bowlers, initially, the chance is there for New Zealand to make the most of their position.”Once the new ball lost its hardness it settled down. There is good pace in the pitch and it flattened out with the older ball.”If you apply yourself you can score,” he said.
Drum- good return
Photo Photosport
Fleming said the New Zealanders had been surprised by how heavy the outfield was and that caused cramping problems for the bowlers. That had also been a problem for rugby players here this year and it meant the bowlers were not quite able to perform in the manner they wanted. However, on top of the ground the ball sped across the outfield very quickly.Fleming said the conditions were such that he was able to use Nathan Astle as an effective fourth seamer, and as a bowler who was a genuine wicket-taking option in the conditions. It allowed him to use Astle to hold up one end with the chance of taking wickets, while rotating his strike bowlers at the other end.For Chris Drum, who broke his collarbone when playing on the ground in his first Test last year, it was a memorable return. He picked up three wickets for 36 runs and had the satisfaction of seeing the same strategies he has used so effectively in the local domestic competition working for him in this level. The ball had done more off the pitch than through the air, he said”I was pleased with my rhythm. It was really heavy running up to the wicket but I kept at it and it makes you work harder when you are coming into the wicket,” he said.

Palmeiras deve ganhar dois 'reforços' campeões brasileiros nesta semana

MatériaMais Notícias

Eduardo Baptista deve ganhar duas novas opções para montar o time do Palmeiras nesta semana.

Liverpool fans don’t want Coutinho return

A number of Liverpool supporters don’t want Philippe Coutinho to return to Anfield despite him reportedly wanting to move back.

The Brazilian was a hugely popular individual during his time with the Reds, scoring 54 goals in 201 appearances along the way (41 goals in 152 Premier League games). Coutinho’s flair lit up Anfield on many occasions and he proved to be an influential player under both Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

He controversially traded Liverpool for Barcelona in January 2018, however, angering some supporters and ruining his Reds legacy. Ironically, Klopp’s men have never looked back since, winning the Champions League and Premier League, while Coutinho has struggled in Spain.

According to Sport [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], it is the 29-year-old’s ‘big dream’ to return to Liverpool this summer, securing a move away from Barca.
