Newcastle begin academy coaching changes

[ad_pod ]Newcastle are already laying the foundations for a future with Rafael Benitez, as the Magpies are set to make changes to their academy coaching staff, just as the gaffer requested.Under-18’s manager Dave Watson will leave Newcastle at the end of the season, Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live reports.

Other reports have added to the claims, with Sun Sport’s David Coverdale claiming this could be one of multiple changes at the club’s academy this summer.

This should be music to the ears of Newcastle fans, because it’s exactly what Benitez wants.

The Spaniard has spoken recently about his desire to improve the academy, which suggests he’s in it for the long haul, and the fact that the club are now following through with significant changes is a great sign.

Mike Ashley takes plenty of stick on Tyneside and deservedly so, but he has just taken the first step towards securing Benitez long-term, and Newcastle fans may be forced to think differently about the man in charge if he can pull it off.

Gaetano Berardi in general a huge boost for Leeds United’s potential promotion

The immense fighting spirit around Elland Road can be perfectly summarised by the resolute recovery efforts from fan favourite Gaetano Berardi.

It is quite literally all hands on deck at Leeds United as the club desperately press on into the final stages of the season, battling with rivals Sheffield United and Norwich City for a place in the world’s most revered competition – the English Premier League.

No one is more committed to this melee than Gaetano Berardi.

The Switzerland international has rapidly ascended to a cult stardom amongst the Leeds faithful, thanks to his hard, no nonsense approach to defending – that perfect mixture of fearlessness and aggression that appeals to the most tribal instincts – the reason we sometimes revel in a crunching tackle as much as a goal.

Recent news will only serve to improve his status around West Yorkshire, as well.

Berardi suffered a hamstring injury so severe in October that it quite literally ripped the muscle away from the bone leaving him with no reasonable alternative other than surgery.

“His is a really difficult injury. You go to some surgeons and they’d say ‘that’s six to nine months’,” Leeds’ head of medicine and performance, Rob Price, told Yorkshire Evening Post.

But that is the point – he is not a reasonable man.

Gaetano Berardi refused the option to have surgery, which would have likely put him out for the rest of the season, instead opting for the slightly more traditional method of running it off – and as a result he is now available to play, just four months later.

This will come as welcome news in the wake of Pontus Jansson’s suspected long-term absence.

West Ham: Two defensive signings to address Pellegrini’s biggest problem

Frustratingly, there have been multiple roadblocks which have hampered Manuel Pellegrini’s first season at West Ham United.

Indeed, the biggest problem he’s faced is with his defence, which has been leaking poor goals throughout. Having spent an awful lot of money on attacking talent over the course of the summer, the Hammers might be exciting going forward, but extremely vulnerable at the back, seriously undermining their progress under the Chilean.

Frankly, they’ve conceded too many goals which have halted considerable progress under Pellegrini, who will surely plan on changing up their defensive system next season.

For that, he needs more reliable defenders. Far more reliable defender.

So, the Hammers need to spend big in the summer to turn around their defensive frailties and here are two options which can suit them.

Guillermo Maripan

The towering Deportivo Alaves defender’s solid work’s impressed Pellegrini, who allegedly wants to sign him next season. Maripan has been in inspired form for a resurgent Alaves side, helping them keep six clean-sheets in La Liga this season (stats via Transfermarkt).

Impressive performances against the likes of Real Madrid, Valencia and Athletic Bilbao raised his stock and garnered interest according to the Daily Mail and he certainly looks like he’d popular at the London Stadium. The 6’4 defender’s strong, agile and tough-tackling, as his assertiveness can elevate West Ham’s defensive structure next season.

Domagoj Vida

Vida brings bags of experience with him, having proven himself with Croatia at the FIFA World Cup 2018.

A strong, intelligent defender who tackles hard as he is clever in marking opposition, the Croatian could be the leader the Hammers are missing in the back.  He’s helped Besiktas keep many clean-sheets this season and immersed himself well, proving how he can adapt almost anywhere he goes.

Indeed, Vida’s set-piece threat is an added bonus and he can be the rock-solid defender who can save their defence from persistently crumbling apart. Linked with a move to East London in January, he’d be a great signing.

A moment in time: Leyton Orient’s 1977 Anglo-Scottish Cup run

We live in a time where the FA have reached the right level of cup competitions that should be on in a season.

In the past, such classics like the Watney Cup, the Full Members Cup and the Texaco Cup were once the hottest thing in English football, but now these failed competitions are only remembered by those fans who experienced glory and defeat in these obscure cups.

One such competition to be created and collapse before it really got going was the Anglo-Scottish Cup, an annual tournament from 1976 to 1981 that pitted 16 English teams and eight Scottish sides against one another in a competition with a mix of group stage games and two-legged knockout matches.

A moment in time – Leyton Orient, 1977

It is in the second edition of the tournament where Leyton Orient almost pulled off an upset and nearly went all the way in the competition.

The O’s, who were in the Second Division, topped a group with the likes of Chelsea and Norwich City, and in the quarter-finals Jimmy Bloomfield’s side continued the run of giant killings, beating Scottish side Aberdeen, who that season would go on to finish third in the league and win the Scottish League Cup, 2-0 on aggregate.

The disqualification of Newcastle from the tournament in the final eight due to the Toon fielding a weakened team in the first leg of the quarter-finals meant that the semi-finals would pit two English teams and against two Scottish teams, Leyton Orient and Nottingham Forest against Ayr United and Patrick Thistle.

Drawn with Thistle, who has just won promotion to the Scottish Premier Division the season before, Orient looked to have reached the end of the road and normality was about to step in and deny the east London side a famous win, but the magic of the cup was still with the O’s.

A 4-2 aggregate win sent Orient to their first cup final since the 1973 London Challenges Cup final, another FA competition to have a place in the pantheons of short-lived cup competitions.

Their opponents in the final would be Brian Clough’s Forest, who were looking for promotion to the First Division and were also keen on winning their first piece of silverware in over 18 years.

It is here where Orient’s fairytale run would end. Despite getting a respectful 1-1 draw at home, the away leg to the City Ground would prove to be their downfall. Forest wiped the floor with the O’s, winning 4-0 and defender Colin Barrett scoring a brace.

It would be Clough’s first piece of silverware as Forest manager, something the legendary coach valued during his time at the time, saying in his biography: “Those who said it was a nothing trophy were absolutely crackers. We’d won something, and it made all the difference.”

For Orient, the club was unable to break into the top 10 of the Second Division, and in 1982 the club were eventually relegated to the Third Division.

The Anglo-Scottish Cup might be lost to the halls of obscurity, but winning or losing the long-forgotten cup sends ripples through time that can send clubs to either unprecedented glory or unavoidable destruction.

Orient fans, would the club’s fortunes have changed if they won the Anglo-Scottish Cup?

Celtic fans react to Adrian Durham’s bizarre Broony rant

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Celtic fans have been reacting to a truly bizarre rant on the state of Scottish football, as Adrian Durham called on Scott Brown to grow up and become a role model.

The Old Firm always chucks out loads of talking points, but the debate surrounding Brown’s post-match celebrations seems like it will rage on forever.

The Bhoys won 2-1 on Sunday courtesy of goals from Odsonne Edouard and James Forrest either side of a Ryan Kent strike, and two Gers were sent off for incidents involving Brown, while a third is set to face retrospective action.

The controversial Bhoys skipper is absolutely always at the centre of the conversation, and he didn’t exactly help matters by celebrating in front of the Rangers fans and sharing fishing emojis on Instagram – to indicate that he had baited the Gers faithful successfully.

And Durham, who himself makes a living out of making controversial statements for TalkSPORT, has called on the Hoops ace to clean up his act and lead the quest for change in Scottish football.

Son Heung-min to Arsenal? Surely not! Bhav explains why the Spurs man should make the unthinkable switch in the video above…

“In fact, this is my personal plea to Scott Brown,” he told TalkSPORT.

“You’re arguably the most influential footballer in Scotland right now Scott. Why not use your position to impact the game positively? Time to put the clown costume away for good.

“Time to grow up, time for you Scott Brown to be a real man and send out messages to fans promoting peace, rejecting sectarianism, rejecting violence and hate.

“Don’t just pay lip service to it and read out statements prepared by the Celtic press officer or wear a t-shirt in the warm-up. Use your position as a force of good and let that be your legacy to the game.

“Scott Brown, you’re 33 years old and you’re known as an antagonist. Time to set the right example, be a true role model.

“You’ve the chance now to go down in history Scott Brown as the man who forced Scottish football to change and change for the better.

“It’s up to him. It’s up to you Scott Brown.”

Apart from setting the world record for saying “Scott Brown” as many times as possible in a short space of time, Durham does raise some valid points.

However, to suggest that Brown can fix all these issues like some kind of superhero is slightly bizarre, and loads of Celtic fans have been slamming the pundit for his verdict.

Arsenal: Nicolas Tagliafico the perfect blend of Monreal and Kolasinac

It takes little reminding that Arsenal’s defence needs a proper overhaul in the summer. Indeed, the Gunners’ shocking defending has often held them back this season and, frankly, Unai Emery needs to address this concern if he aims to challenge for bigger things in his second season.

However, it seems he’s already started drawing the blueprint for potential signings. According to reports from Argentinian reporter Martin Liberman (via Football London), the Spaniard wants to sign Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico to slot into his side’s defence next season. Interestingly, the Argentine’s being dubbed as the new Javier Zanetti thanks to his versatility in defence and ability going forward as well, impressing in the Dutch capital.

Tagliafico’s been a crucial part of Ajax’s stunning season and was rock solid in their amazing UEFA Champions League success at the Santiago Bernabeu, keeping some world-class attackers quiet in one of the most excitingly fluid sides on the continent this term. Furthermore, he’s been extremely consistent in the left-back slot for the Dutch giants, being rock-solid defensively and ambitious going forward as well.

The Argentine left back’s having a stellar individual season, helping Ajax keep 13 clean sheets in the league, along with a few in Europe. He’s averaging 2.3 tackle per game, 2.1 interceptions, 1.7 clearances per game (stats via WhoScored) while making a few key passes every other game as well.  In terms of the stats every football fan will love, he’s scored one, assisted four in Eredivisie, with his impressive passing and crossing ability elevating Ajax’s game.

Simply put, he’d be a wonderful signing for the Gunners and one who can slot seamlessly into Emery’s system at the Emirates stadium. Tactically versatile and strong enough to get up and down the pitch, you Arsenal fans can bet your bottom dollar you’d have a new cult-hero on your hands.

It’ll be very difficult to pry him away from Ajax with other big clubs surely keen. However, Emery could get the perfect blend of Nacho Monreal’s defensive knowledge and Sead Kolasinac’s attacking flair in the reliable Tagliafico, whose intelligence and grit will make them rock-solid defensively.
