Crystal Palace fans react as Everton striker Cenk Tosun is targeted once again

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after Paul Joyce of The Times reported that the Eagles are trying to sign Everton striker Cenk Tosun on loan.

Now, this isn’t the first time that the south Londoners have tried to land the Turkey international.

Roy Hodgson’s side attempted to land Tosun in the summer of 2017 before he moved to Goodison Park, with the forward’s agent Ceylan Caliskan revealing that Palace were ‘hours’ away from landing his client.

“Crystal Palace were already scouting Cenk. They initially made an £8m bid which was immediately rejected. They then offered £12.5m spread over three years, this was also rejected. Finally they matched Besiktas’ valuation but there was just two to three hours remaining in the transfer window. The paperwork couldn’t be completed in time so the deal fell through.”

The Turk then swapped Besiktas for Everton the following January in a deal worth £27m, although he has struggled for consistent game time on Merseyside – Tosun made just ten Premier League starts last season, and only has two to his name this term.

In addition to Palace’s previous interest in the Toffees’ No.14, the Eagles also tried to land the 28-year-old again last January although a move to SE25 never materialised for Tosun.

Joyce’s latest update revealing that the south Londoners are back in for the Everton man once again is interesting, and also strongly suggests that Palace are dead set on landing their man – let’s see how the Eagles fans on Twitter reacted to the news.

This supporter named Liam seemingly does not approve of a move for Tosun, by saying that he’d “genuinely prefer Glenn Murray for six months” – opting for a 36-year-old with just three Premier League starts this term over the Turkish forward is telling.

Contrastingly, this fan with the username ‘Chrissy Palace’ believes that Tosun is the “perfect forward” for the Eagles, before saying that he “works very hard” and “score goals” – another supporter agreed with that verdict by saying that the striker is “about as good as we’re going to get” before branding the Everton man as “dangerous” with “a point to prove”.

Elsewhere, Jordan said that Tosun’s Everton displays have not been convincing, although this fan did admit that they’d rather have him than Fabio Borini who has also been linked with a move to Selhurst Park.

Lastly, this pair of supporters weren’t on board with a move for the long-term target.

One said that club chairman Steve Parish is “like a dog with a bone” over players he’s previously missed out on, before saying that the Turk isn’t even worth the money needed to secure a loan.

Furthermore, ‘Kevin The Eagle’ asked why Palace can’t show some intent and sign a player outright rather than secure a loan.

In other news, this Crystal Palace target would only cost around half of what the Eagles are looking to spend…

Tottenham fans react to reported interest in Man City’s Joao Cancelo

Tottenham are making the most out of the January transfer window and having added a midfielder in Gedson Fernandes they have now reportedly set their sights on improving the right-back area.

El Desmarque report that Jose Mourinho is interested in compatriot Joao Cancelo of Manchester City, who joined the Citizens last summer for £27.5m, with Danilo heading the other way to Juventus.

Right-back is an area Spurs are short on with Mourinho relying on Serge Aurier to play there in every match but two since he has taken over, but the Ivory Coast international has come under significant criticism at times this season and can certainly be upgraded upon.

Cancelo hasn’t had the game time he probably would have wanted since his switch to England so it is interesting to see if he would be keen on a move, as El Desmarque suggest he is unhappy.

Many Spurs fans are very excited at the transfer news and would jump at the chance to sign him, having been impressed with what he has shown in his 18 City appearances.

However, a WhoScored rating of 7.00 for all competitions compared to Aurier’s 7.28 suggests he may not be an improvement on the 27-year-old, and given the fee it may take to prise him away it may not be a deal worth pursuing, with the 25-year-old rated at £45m by Transfermarkt.

Some supporters would rather Spurs focus on a different Man City right-back, Kyle Walker, having seen him make the move to Eastlands from Tottenham in 2017.

The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?

The England international is still first-choice under Pep Guardiola having played 23 times this season, however, and therefore the likelihood of him returning is perhaps even more unlikely than the Portugal international coming to North London.

In other transfer news, Spurs fans have also taken delight in a recent development which could signal a positive step forward for the club.

Analysing Arsenal’s reported targets: Edinson Cavani vs Dries Mertens

It seems that Arsenal are on a hunt for a new forward in the January transfer window.

According to a recent report from the Daily Express, the Gunners are keeping an eye on Napoli’s Dries Mertens, a 32-year-old forward whose contract is due to expire in the coming summer.

But he doesn’t appear to be the only choice for Mikel Arteta as Arsenal have submitted a bid for Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani, who is also soon to be out-of-contract, according to El Chiringuito (via Metro).

Quickfire Quiz: How much do you know about Arsenal’s history in the January transfer window?

It’s easy to see why the new gaffer would be enticed by both players but who is the better option for the club?

Upon further inspection of their stats, there is a winner and a favourite Arteta should be chasing if he is to incorporate a new forward into his team.

Let’s take a look…

Seeing how they are both approaching the end of their contracts and Cavani has only managed to tally 330 minutes in the ongoing Ligue 1 campaign, it makes sense to analyse their respective 2018/19 seasons for a fair comparison.

Back then, both players were extremely prolific in front of goal but the Uruguayan hitman scored 18 goals compared to Mertens’ 16. But for all his obvious quality, this is where his supremacy over his 32-year-old counterpart stops.

Napoli’s ace is seemingly a better overall player who can contribute to more than just finishing chances.

As a result, he finished the season with 11 assists in Serie A while his rival could only muster five to his name.

Not only that but Mertens averaged two key passes per game as opposed to Cavani’s 0.6. In possession of the ball, meanwhile, he proved to be better passer with 79% accuracy compared to 76.3% from Cavani.

Seeing how Arteta’s own style of play could revolve around possession-based football – especially since he was under Pep Guardiola’s watchful eye for many years – this aspect could be of huge importance to the Spaniard.

And finally, so could the fact that Mertens registered 1.2 unsuccessful touches per game while Cavani had 1.8, further solidifying the Italian’s superior composure and security on the ball.

When everything is said and done, Napoli’s striker definitely looks like a better option for the Gunners and Arteta should think twice before chasing Paris Saint-Germain’s outcast.

Aston Villa looking to sign Mehdi Taremi shows they are reverting to type

Aston Villa are looking into signing Rio Ave striker Mehdi Taremi, as has been reported by Sky Sports.

The Villans may have already recruited Mbwana Samatta this winter, but they are seemingly still on the lookout for strikers, as they bid to maintain their Premier League status past the current campaign.

It is suggested that they are still interested in Islam Slimani, but a deal could be difficult to conclude, given that he is currently on loan at Monaco from Leicester City.

Therefore, it seems as though Taremi is one of the main targets to join Samatta in the frontline, with Wesley and Keinan Davis both currently injured.

The 27-year-old, who has represented Iran 38 times, has scored six goals and added a further five assists from 13 Liga NOS games for Rio Ave this season, helping them to their current position of seventh in the table.

However, with this potential move, it indicates that Villa are merely reverting to their ways of the summer, especially as it follows on from the signing of Tanzania international Samatta.

When they first came into the Premier League, Dean Smith and Suso were not necessarily focused on recruiting players who have a wealth of experience in the English top flight.

This is summarised by the fact that the majority of these players, including Marvelous Nakamba, Douglas Luiz and Ezri Konsa did not have a Premier League game between them.

During the January window, it seemed as though this stance had completely changed, as loan deals were completed for Pepe Reina and Danny Drinkwater, who have now played 287 and 103 games in the division respectively.

However, having now gone in for Samatta, following that up with someone who had never played in Europe until the summer, it shows that Villa are now back to their old ways.

This can be seen as a risk, especially when it’s considered that they are currently just two points above the relegation zone.

However, this could also allow the club to discover a gem who could fire them to safety without having to break the bank.

Meanwhile, one Villa man deserves more credit for the part they played in the Watford win.

Newcastle’s Matty Longstaff could sign pre-contract deal with Serie A giants

Newcastle United’s Matty Longstaff could sign a pre-contract deal with Inter Milan or AC Milan, according to The Times.

What’s the story?

As it stands, the 19-year-old has just six months left on his current deal, which leaves him free to negotiate with clubs outside of the UK.

[ad_pod ]

Longstaff, who currently earns £1,000-a-week, is said to be of interest to the two Serie A giants. Should he depart, the Toon would be due a compensation package of just £400,000.

Poor business

Longstaff has burst onto the scene this season, following in the footsteps of his brother Sean who broke into the side last term. During the current campaign, the younger sibling has scored thrice in 11 appearances, netting the winner on his debut against Manchester United.

Given his potential, it is flabbergasting that Newcastle have not already secured him to a new deal – the report also adds that talks have stalled over a new deal. Were he to leave for such a minimal amount, it would be a huge blow for Steve Bruce – here is a midfielder who could be a huge part of his side for the future.

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp should have taken a leaf out of Jose Mourinho’s book

Liverpool were unable to get the job done against Shrewsbury in the FA Cup despite being 2-0 with 30 minutes left.

The Reds had looked in control of the game, but a Jason Cummings double meant that Salop got their hands on a draw, and perhaps more importantly, a replay at Anfield.

That should have been a moment and experience to remember for the League One outfit, but it has been slightly soured by Jurgen Klopp’s comments after the match. The 52-year-old confirmed that, due to the two-week winter break agreed upon by the clubs and the FA last April, neither himself nor the senior players will take part in the match on February 4th, meaning that Neil Critchley will take charge and the club’s youth players will take the field – just like they did against Aston Villa in the League Cup quarter-final.

Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

Klopp has already made his feelings clear on fixture congestion, and you can understand where he is coming from to an extent. The Premier League is obviously his and the team’s focus, and the planning by the English game’s governing bodies could have been better.

However, there are more reasons to indicate this is a bad call from the boss. Firstly, the only reason the Reds are in this situation is because they were unable to put the game to bed. Had they not taken their foot of the gas and allowed their opponents back into the game, they would have avoided another match and any complications. The winter break would be preferable, of course, but it is unlikely that the Premier League would take such an aversion to them playing a competitive match that they are required to, rather than have chosen to themselves.

Also, the question of playing time for some of the fringe players does rear its head. Whilst the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane could do with a rest – they have already played 32 and 31 matches respectively – others such as Divock Origi and Fabinho are crying out for game time. The former has featured in 30 matches this term, but has only played 1,016 minutes – less than half of Mane’s total, for example – whilst this was the latter’s first start since November. There are plenty of other players who are in similar situations, and will probably be slightly disappointed that they will not be able to get on to the pitch in the replay.

Incredibly, Klopp could do with taking a leaf out of Jose Mourinho’s book. The Portuguese manager’s Tottenham side could only manage a 1-1 draw at Southampton, meaning they too will have to play again. He was clearly unhappy at having to play another game – both he and Klopp have the right to be – but he added: “I think both me and him [Ralph Hasenhuttl] prefer to play again than to be out”. Tottenham have only played four less matches than the Reds in all competitions this term.

Acting in this manner – admitting that it is a nuisance but accepting that that is the way the fixtures lie – would have been a far better course of action. Instead, it seems as though Klopp has thrown his toys out of the pram. With a 16-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, one extra game is unlikely to make too much of a difference in the long-term. He doesn’t get much wrong, but the Liverpool boss may have done just that in this situation.

Crystal Palace: The XI that Roy Hodgson should deploy against Everton

Crystal Palace travel to Merseyside this weekend to take on Everton at Goodison Park, in what will be the Premier League’s early kick-off on Saturday at 12:30pm.

The Eagles will be looking for their first win since Boxing Day, having failed to record a victory since the 2-1 win over West Ham at Selhurst Park – Roy Hodgson’s side have only won three of their last 18 outings in all competitions.

In Everton’s case, Carlo Ancelotti has won four of his eight games in charge of the Toffees since overseeing a 1-0 win over Burnley in his first match since replacing Marco Silva.

The Merseysiders’ form has seen them rise into ninth on 33 points, just four points off fifth-placed Tottenham.

Let’s take a look at the starting XI that we think Hodgson should go for in this encounter…

As you can see, we think the former England manager should make two changes from the XI which started against Sheffield United – that particular lineup was the Eagles’ oldest-ever Premier League starting XI with an average age of 30 years and 94 days.

We think that Cheikhou Kouyate deserves to come back into the fold in place of James McCarthy, as the Irishman has played 90 minutes in every game since December 28th – given his colourful injury history, we think Hodgson should afford him some rest.

What could’ve been… Can you name the clubs these football legends almost joined?

Elsewhere, after another goalless display against Sheffield Wednesday last time out, we feel that Christian Benteke deserves to return to the bench with Jordan Ayew returning to a centre-forward role and Andros Townsend coming back into the XI now that he has resumed full fitness.

January signing Cenk Tosun cannot play as he is on loan from Everton, and as Connor Wickham departed the club last month, leaving Benteke on the bench would at least give the Eagles an option to bring on.

Spurs boss Mourinho names two men who have truly impressed him

Jose Mourinho has named two Tottenham Hotspur players who have really impressed him since his appointment in November, per Sky Sports.

What’s the word?

The Portuguese took over with the club in 14th and they have since climbed to within four points of the top four.

Mourinho has overseen five defeats in all competitions in total, against Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Southampton, and Liverpool.

But the report states that, if the table began when the ex-Chelsea boss took over, Spurs would be level on points with third-placed Leicester City.

Calling all Tottenham fans: How much do you really know about Spurs’ new hero? Find out below…

And both Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura have particularly impressed him as the club have attempted to overcome a number of setbacks, including various injuries to the likes of striker Harry Kane and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

He said: “We as a team in the last few weeks are showing a certain mentality. This season has been hard for them. Even before I arrived.

“They lost the captain Hugo Lloris for a long period. Then progressively you lose another player. Then another one. Then another one.

“But the way the team has fought has made me even prouder of them. People like Son and Lucas going to their limits and giving absolutely everything. Injured players trying to give everything.

“The spirit is amazing.”

Two excellent wingers

Lucas has played in every Premier League game under Mourinho, scoring three goals, while Son has played whenever he has been available for selection; he did miss three matches after his sending off against Chelsea.

Since then, he has scored vital goals against both Norwich City and Manchester City.

Both players have worked particularly hard under the Portuguese – Lucas has been particularly sacrificial under Mourinho given the way he is playing, while Son has been in prolific form in recent weeks.

It will surely be a boost for the pair that they have been singled out for particular praise by their manager and they will surely be integral to the club as the season continues.

Their chase of Chelsea, in fourth-place, is likely to go right down to the wire.

Meanwhile, Spurs’ Player of the Season has to be clear!

Phil Parkes says West Ham should be inspired by Southampton

Phil Parkes has suggested that West Ham United should take inspiration from Premier League rivals Southampton, as reported by Blowing Bubbles’ print magazine (Issue 100, page 15).

What did he say?

The Hammers are in trouble ahead of their Premier League clash with Manchester City as they sit in the relegation zone, above Watford on goal difference and one point behind Aston Villa and a safety spot.

This comes with the team achieving just one win from their last eight games, as well as immediately after throwing away a two-goal lead against Brighton & Hove Albion to draw.

David Moyes’ men also have a tough run of games, as their clash with City is followed by meetings with Liverpool, Southampton, Arsenal, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

While Parkes admits it is hard to see where West Ham will get points from, he insists they can look to Premier League rivals for encouragement: “You only need to look at Southampton for inspiration. They were struggling like mad but they had a run where they got good results and they dragged themselves out of trouble.”

A required jump

Immediately after losing 1-0 against the Hammers, Southampton went on a very impressive run which took them away from the relegation zone.

This saw them win five of their following seven games, losing just one of those, which offers an indication of just how quickly things can change for a club.

When did that happen?! Premier League experts will know which surprising clubs these stars once played for…

In terms of West Ham, they may be looking to replicate a run like this in their last six games of the campaign, when they face Newcastle United, Burnley, Norwich City, Watford, Manchester United and Aston Villa.

If they are able to make the most of that kind run, as well as picking something up from the tough tasks they have immediately ahead, then there is a good chance they will be able to keep their place in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, one West Ham youngster is not ready for the first-team despite calls from fans.

Crystal Palace may feel sceptical after scouting mission

According to Turkish-Football, Crystal Palace were among the sides who were given accreditation to go and watch the Intercontinental derby game between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, where the Eagles were believed to be casting an eye over Ozan Tufan.

Turkish-Football also revealed that Everton hold an interest in the Turkey international too, but after watching his performance in the heavyweight Super Lig clash on Sunday, Roy Hodgson’s side have every right to feel sceptical over what they witnessed.

How did he do?

While the 24-year-old didn’t exactly endure a nightmare display, he didn’t perform a masterclass either.

Tufan lined up in a defensive-midfield role – an area in which he has made seven appearances this term, while also playing at right-back and right-midfield.

He played the entire game, picking up a yellow card while registering one dribble, one key pass and no shots.

Tufan also had just 33 touches of the ball, which was fewer than any of his Fenerbahce teammates.

Palace have reason to be sceptical

As aforesaid, while it wasn’t the worst performance of all time from the versatile player, it was surely enough to make Palace feel sceptical about bringing Tufan to Selhurst Park.

That point is made even more relevant by the fact that the Fenerbahce man has a €20m (£16.7m) release clause in his contract.

If the Eagles are going to have to shell out an amount of that nature, then one would like to think that they’d be completely sold on the potential purchase before parting with such a significant sum.

On the basis on his display against Galatasaray, the south Londoners surely can’t be completely convinced given the quiet nature of Tufan’s performance.

His versatility is attractive, as is his international experience – he scored at the 2016 European Championship.

However, the Eagles have every right to have left the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium feeling sceptical over what they saw.
