Crystal Palace should sign Cenk Tosun if Everton beat them to Michy Batshuayi

[ad_pod ]

With Crystal Palace still struggling to score goals despite creating a whole host of chances, their hunt for a striker this month is still very much on as we enter the midway point of the winter transfer window. However, if one of their main targets gets poached, they should be reactive in the market…

What’s the word, then?

Michy Batshuayi, a player that the Eagles have expressed an interest in signing before when they had a £31.6m bid accepted from Marseille for the Belgian international’s signature, appears to be back on the market.

The 25-year-old has had his season-long loan with La Liga side Valencia cut short after boss Marcelino expressed his unhappiness with Batshuayi’s performances, which has seen the forward return to Stamford Bridge where he is well out of favour under Maurizio Sarri.

Check out Neymar’s controversial new haircut for 2019 and Xherdan Shaqiri as you’ve never seen him before in the video below…

The former Standard Liege striker has scored just one league goal so far this season, but he is still a very dangerous poacher who would take no time in adapting to Premier League football again.

Who’s in for him?

Everton are interested in Batshuayi along with the Eagles, as both sides look to strengthen their attack. The Toffees, however, would have to secure a permanent deal as they cannot have another player on loan from the blues – Kurt Zouma has already signed on a temporary deal, and only one loanee is allowed from the same club.

Palace would look best placed for the deal, but if Marco Silva does pip Roy Hodgson to the striker, the 71-year-old should demand Cenk Tosun, who would be even more out-of-favour at Goodison Park if Batshuayi signed.

The south London side were also close to signing the Turkish forward back in 2017, but lost out to the Merseysiders.

27-year-old Tosun has started just six Premier League games this season as he has lost his place to Richarlison up top,  but has still managed to score two goals and record two assists and remains a very good forward.

If Everton nick yet another striking target from Palace, all parties would be happy if the former Besiktas man arrived at Selhurst Park.

Marco Silva plays a dangerous game questioning Anthony Taylor’s decisions

[ad_pod ]

Marco Silva played a dangerous game with his post-match comments when the Everton manager questioned referee Anthony Taylor’s performance.

What’s he said?

Speaking after his side clinched their first home win in the Premier League since November, Silva could not rest in the delight of the three points after witnessing what he called a “really strange” performance by the ref.

“I’m sure if you are an Everton supporter this afternoon you are unhappy about the referee this afternoon,” Silva said. “I don’t have doubts about that.

“I’m not a coach who comes here to find excuses, I like to be honest with you all but this afternoon was really tough.

“This afternoon was really strange. It was a bad performance [by the ref] for sure, but in some moments I can have a bad performance.”

“It is impossible I will be happy with that performance. They only had one clear chance and it was a foul on Zouma, I don’t understand how the referee didn’t see that foul.

“All the people in the stadium can see but that the referee and his assistants didn’t see, that is strange.”

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

A risky game

Whenever a manager takes aim at a referee’s performance, they are playing a risky game as the FA never look lightly on the matter when they later reflect on whatever has been said.

Back in December, Neil Warnock was asked to clarify comments he made regarding referee Andrew Madley, after what the Cardiff boss thought had been a questionable day by the official when he opted not to book Watford’s Troy Deeney for a dangerous challenge on the Bluebirds’ goalkeeper.

It does not take much to see similarities with Silva, who will likely find himself under the governing body’s spotlight.

Was there any truth in his words?

While players and managers are always held accountable, the officials are almost untouchable entities when it comes to criticism, but there was truth to the words Silva uttered.

Everton found themselves constantly under Taylor’s scrutiny and deemed the Toffees to have committed 17 fouls to the Cherries’ eight. Silva’s men were also shown five yellow cards to the visitors zero, with Bernard the first in the book after 38 minutes.

Tottenham fans react after Son progresses to Asian Cup quarter-finals

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur winger Son Heung-Min helped South Korea to a 2-1 win over Bahrain after extra time in the Asian Cup on Tuesday, and Spurs fans were quick to react to the news on Twitter.

The result means that Son is set to remain with his international team-mates until at least Friday, where a quarter-final against either Iraq or Qatar awaits. The semi-finals are played on Monday, January 28th and Tuesday, January 29th. The final takes place on Friday, February 1st; there is no third-place play-off.

The winger featured in Spurs’ 1-0 loss to Manchester United on January 20th but swiftly flew out to join his South Korea team-mates in the United Arab Emirates.

He subsequently missed the dramatic 2-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage and is now certain to be absent from games against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Thursday and the FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The news is something of a blow for Mauricio Pochettino, who has been dealing with an injury crisis in recent weeks.

Harry Kane has been ruled out until March with ligament damage, per BBC Sport, with Fernando Llorente the club’s only fully-fit central striker. The Spaniard scored an own goal against Fulham at the weekend.

Son has shared some of the goalscoring burden with Kane this season, scoring 12 times in 28 appearances in all competitions and laying on a total of nine assists, as per Transfermarkt.

An electric run of form began in November, as he scored eight goals and provided five assists in just nine games. He drew a blank against United at Wembley prior to his sojourn to the UAE, however.

Spurs announced the news of South Korea’s triumphant result on their Twitter feed on Tuesday and fans were quick to express their disappointment that Son will be absent for just a little while longer…

Injury News: Tom Carroll nearing Swansea return

[ad_pod ]

Swansea City midfielder Tom Carroll could make his return from injury in Tuesday’s Championship clash with Birmingham City.

Indeed, on Monday, Swansea boss Graham Potter confirmed that Carroll was in his thinking for Tuesday’s fixture having fully recovered from injury.

What’s the latest?

Carroll has not turned out for Swansea since their 3-1 home win over Blackburn Rovers on October 23.

Who are the best away fans in the Championship? Pl>ymaker FC’s Thogden gives his top 10 in the video below…

Niggling hip and groin problems have seen Carroll miss a lot of football, but Potter has confirmed that the midfielder has been training for ‘three or four weeks’.

The former Tottenham Hotspur youngster played in all but one of Swansea’s 38 Premier League matches last season, but could not prevent the Welsh outfit from being relegated.

There is no question that the Swans have missed Carroll’s quality in the middle of the park this term though and his return to fitness will be a huge boost for the club.

How have Swansea performed without him?

Swansea have played their last 14 Championship matches without Carroll, recording six wins, two draws and six defeats.

The Welsh outfit are actually unbeaten in the league since Boxing Day and recorded a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United on January 19 to leave themselves in 11th position, just six points off the playoff positions.

Potter’s team also progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 4-1 win over Gillingham at the weekend.

It is a good time for Carroll to return as the confidence in the team is high and there is no question that the midfielder will be desperate to play his part between now and the end of the campaign.

Few players in the Swansea squad move the ball as well as Carroll, whilst his versatility will be key over the next few months.

Newcastle United should have added more in January and taken a punt on this 18-goal striker

Newcastle United ended the January window with a bit of a flourish, with the club completing a record deal for Miguel Almiron and also signing Monaco midfielder Antonio Barreca on a loan deal.

Rafa Benitez had been crying out for some new faces within his squad, and the two new additions should go down well with the Toon Army as they look for their team to move away from a potential relegation scrap.

However, we here in the Tavern think the window could have been even better for the Magpies, and believe that the club should have made a move to add some more firepower to the ranks in terms of attacking players.

With that, we feel that the club should have moved to sign Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki, who has been in tremendous form this term, notching 18 goals in the Championship as the Canaries sit primed to compete for an automatic promotion spot.

Pukki has really come on leaps and bounds this term, and on his day is as dangerous as anyone in the division at the top end of the pitch.

A capable finisher but someone who brings so much more to the game than just poaching, Pukki would have been the icing on the cake for Benitez and co.

The Finland star would have been able to add extra depth to an XI which is light on genuine attacking threat, and, with his form, would have slotted straight into life at St James’ Park.

Newcastle fans, would you have taken Pukki? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

The Chalkboard: Everton should deploy Lucas Digne in midfield

Lucas Digne has been impressive for Everton this season, but head coach Marco Silva should consider a change of position for the Frenchman.

Digne is, without question, Everton’s first-choice left-back ahead of Leighton Baines, but a position further forward would help change the team’s fortunes.

The Chalkboard

In 24 Premier League appearances this season, Digne has contributed three goals and three assists.

When considering that Everton paid just £18m to sign Digne from Barcelona last summer, there is no question that he has been a success thus far.

Going forward, Digne is excellent. Indeed, his use of the ball and ability to pick out teammates from wide areas has been a key feature of Everton’s work this season.

It would also be fair to say that the Frenchman is not the most solid of defenders, however, which cost him the chance to edge out Jordi Alba at Barcelona.

Everton have conceded 39 Premier League goals this season, while they have lost four of their last five games in the top flight, which is simply not good enough.

Something has to change for the Toffees and Silva should certainly be considering a new role further up the field for the talented Digne.

Why should Silva make the change?

At left-back, Digne does not provide enough cover to his central defenders. He is quick and does read the game well, but is often the target for deep crosses due to his height.

Selecting the Frenchman in a midfield position would give him the licence to break forward without having to worry too much about what is happening behind him.

Digne certainly has the energy and willingness to cover ground down the left and it would also make Everton more solid in a defensive area.

Next up for the Toffees is a trip to Cardiff City on February 26, before opening March with the small matter of a home game against Liverpool.

Cardiff and Liverpool will both be looking to take advantage of Everton’s defensive issues.

Silva now has a window to work on something different due to the break in fixtures and he should certainly consider a change of position for one of his most talented players.

Potential consequences: Arsenal sign Gbamin

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal are interested in the prospect of signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin from Mainz this summer, per The Daily Express.

The Gunners, according to the report, tabled a bid for the 23-year-old last summer as they looked to bolster their defence.

And after failing to secure a defensive reinforcement in the January transfer window, it is reported that the club have reignited their interest in Gbamin.

Mainz, the Express report, value Gbamin at around £40million and it remains to be seen if Arsenal will be willing to match that asking price.

Football FanCast look at the potential consequences of the Gunners securing the defender’s services…

Mustafi sold

Shkodran Mustafi has been a walking disaster zone in recent seasons.

The defender has done nothing to mark himself out as a Premier League-level centre-back since his move from Valencia in 2016.

Arsenal paid £35m to take him away from the Spanish club and, after a half-decent start, his stay in north London has been characterised by hesitant defending and a number of high-profile gaffes.

Check out Neymar’s controversial new haircut for 2019 and Xherdan Shaqiri as you’ve never seen him before in the video below…

Bringing in Gbamin is something of a risk, as he has never played Premier League football, but it would allow Unai Emery to move Mustafi on.

Arsenal are not likely to turn a profit on the Germany international, but they can shift him off the books and ensure they do not have to suffer many more mistakes from the 26-year-old.

Arsenal turn to youth

Arsenal have a history of signing young players and embedding them into the first-team. Gbamin is just 23 and his signing could mark something of a change in recent transfer strategy.

The likes of Stephan Lichtsteiner, Sokratis, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are all over the age of 28 and have joined the club in recent seasons.

But securing Gbamin would be more akin to the signing of 19-year-old Matteo Guendouzi, offering fans hope of a potential switch to bringing in younger, more promising players.

It must be said, of course, that the defender already has an international pedigree – he has won five caps for the Ivory Coast and has also made over 80 appearances for Mainz, who are understandably keen to hold onto one of their prized assets.

Emery allowed control over transfers

After the departure of Sven Mislintat as the club’s Head of Recruitment, it appears that some of his responsibility may well fall to Emery.

And that would be good news for Arsenal fans.

Emery has been trying to implement a very specific style in recent months and has repeatedly had to place round pegs in square holes.

Allowing the manager the chance to have the final say on transfers offers up the prospect of Arsenal recruiting players who suit his style, and who can instantly adapt to life in the Premier League.

Gbamin may well be one such acquisition. He was pursued by the club in the summer and Emery now appears ready to go back with another bid.

That is a high recommendation for the young Ivorian, but it remains to be seen if the deal gets done. If it is, Emery deserves a lot of the credit.

Real Madrid’s Luka Jovic could rediscover his form at West Ham

Luka Jovic’s £58m move to Real Madrid was supposed to be a huge step in his career.

The 21-year-old Serbian was brilliant during his stay in Germany, wearing the colours of Eintracht Frankfurt.

In his last season in the Bundesliga, Jovic managed to score 27 goals and assist further seven across all competitions, with ten goals scored in just 14 Europa League clashes as well.

Los Blancos’ eventual approach did not really surprise that much and the young forward looked like a certain bet for the future. But fast forward a couple more months and Jovic is struggling to find continuity of any sorts at the Santiago Bernabeu.

With just one goal to his name and a mere 405 minutes of game time spread across 13 games suggests Zinedine Zidane doesn’t really count on his young talent and for that reason, exit links have certainly been coming.

Fichajes recently reported that West Ham are among the teams who would be interested in his services and Real Madrid would seek an exit deal for their struggling Galactico. This is also reinforced by another claim from Calciomercato that stated Zidane is looking to make a possible separation only temporary via a loan deal.

Even though binning a player who’s hardly even gotten a chance to prove himself sounds like a foolish move by Florentino Perez and co., maybe a loan spell to the Hammers of all clubs could bode well for the 21-year-old.

After all, West Ham already have one of his teammates, Sebastien Haller, in their midsts.

Last season, Haller and Jovic played together at Frankfurt and both were quite deadly with the former scoring 20 and the latter 27 goals across all competitions.

A football legend: How much do you know about the late, great Bobby Moore? Test your knowledge below…

Not only that, but they also worked quite well while on the pitch together as they had a joint goal contribution of eight, with two goals by Haller assisted by Jovic and six goals by Jovic assisted by Haller.

West Ham are currently struggling to stay afloat in the Premier League with the team sitting in 15th at the very moment. Their star forward has bagged five goals, which is a decent return but not enough for them to get back on track.

Jovic’s potential introduction could really be a win-win scenario for all parties involved.

The Hammers would get a young and prolific striker to partner Haller up front and potentially give them a much-needed boost and Jovic would get a chance to rediscover his form, while Real Madrid would continue the development of their future Galactico.

Granted, West Ham do mostly play with a lone striker up front but maybe Manuel Pellegrini could tweak that to accommodate his potential tandem and get the best out of them, especially considering his latest experiment in a 4-4-2 formation against Southampton yielded them an important victory.

Haller impressed with Michail Antonio next to him in the forward line and as a result, he also bagged a goal for his troubles.

Is it a likely scenario, however? It seems like a difficult battle for the Hammers, as was actually confirmed by ExWHUemployee back at the start of December (via Hammers.News).

But if the deal is possible, West Ham would try and pounce on it.

Let’s see what ends up happening.

Meanwhile, Lyon have to ensure they don’t lose both of their superstars to Liverpool and Chelsea…

Tottenham star Aurier slammed by Neville

Gary Neville has criticised Serge Aurier for a major mistake against Chelsea, insisting that Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho will be “furious” with him, per Sky Sports via HITC.

What’s he said?

The Ivory Coast international was at fault for the concession of Chelsea’s first goal, heading the ball out of play under little pressure to give the Blues a corner. Then, as it was taken, Aurier appeared to switch off and did not get close enough to Willian, who shimmied past him and sent a superb curling effort into the bottom corner.

The right-back has actually been a major part of Jose Mourinho’s team since his appointment as manager, turning in a series of assured displays and providing an assist against West Ham United.

However, Neville believes that Aurier’s disappointing lapse in concentration will have infuriated the former Manchester United boss.

Watch Spurs vs Brighton Live and Free with Amazon Prime on Boxing Day

He said: “He lacks concentration. He’s turning around looking over his right shoulder, not even watching the play.

“He then sets off late and doesn’t sprint. Willian skips inside him and it’s a brilliant finish, but it was poor and Jose Mourinho will be furious.”

Not reliable

Aurier always has a mistake in him.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, he conceded a vital penalty against Liverpool and was also sent off versus Southampton.

Here, he reverted to that form.

Aurier was guilty of switching off, of a lapse in concentration that proved absolutely vital.

Chelsea’s first goal was indicative of the rest of Spurs’ display and set a poor tone.

Mourinho’s produced some incredible footballing stars – how much do you know about them?

There were a number of sloppy mistakes – Paulo Gazzaniga conceding a penalty with a wild piece of goalkeeping and Son Heung-Min being sent off for a petty kick towards Antonio Rudiger – and Aurier’s was merely the first.

But it cannot be allowed to continue. As the season continues – Spurs face Brighton and Norwich City within two days – dropping Aurier would not be the worst idea.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans have reacted to a major update on Toby Alderweireld.

Just how many second chances will failed dinosaur David Moyes be gifted?

Though David Moyes’ six-month stint at West Ham in 2017/18 was nothing to write home about he did admittedly do the job he was brought in for.

With the club floundering in the bottom three and rudderless following the sacking of Slaven Bilic, the immediate priorities were to get some points on the board and better organise a team in collective disarray. With an unremarkable but sufficient win ratio of 29% from his 31 games in charge the seasoned Scot fulfilled that criteria and the Hammers eventually finished thirteenth and safe.

Two years on and despite spending lavishly on a number of new faces, and bringing in a coach the owners regarded as being ‘high-calibre’ in Manuel Pellegrini, the East London outfit are now experiencing an unfortunate case of deju vu.

Relegation is a real threat. A beleaguered side have careered from one poor result to another. It makes sense then – or at least it is not outright insanity – that the West Ham board thought it shrewd last week to re-appoint Moyes on another short-term contract and essentially hope that history repeats itself. After all, a second short, sharp shock of pragmatism certainly can’t do any harm.

And so far – though we are very much on the opening page – all is going to plan. A resounding 4-0 win over Bournemouth on New Years’ Day was just the tonic a team and fan-base bereft of confidence needed and, suddenly, where so recently there was only doom and gloom, there is hope.

That is that, your honour. In the People vs David Moyes and West Ham’s decision to re-employ him, the defence rests.

Even if it lacks a smoking gun or mic-drop moment it is a sound enough defence but now let’s turn to the prosecution to see what they have to say on the matter.

David Moyes was not only the wrong man for West Ham, he would be the wrong man for any club with meaningful aspirations. He is as uninspiring as a dishcloth. He is anchored to a bygone age that entirely trusts endeavour over artistry. In his six years since leaving Everton – a club with which he excelled by and large – he has proven beyond all reasonable doubt that he is a manager of restricted means, with scant in-game imagination or ambition and even less tactical flair.

At Manchester United, he saw his reputation stripped away in layers in the most public, embarrassing and disastrous manner imaginable as the title-holders plummeted down the table until his inevitable sacking spared him of further indignities ten months in.

His arrival had him acclaimed as ‘the chosen one’ due to being handpicked by his predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson. His departure had him damned by one and all; a national punchline for his managerial ineptitude and sole purchase of the agricultural Marouanne Fellaini.

With his reputation in tatters a move abroad was considered for the best but at Real Sociedad he flopped again losing 15 of his 42 games at the helm. The football was predictable and lacklustre; a fair reflection of their coach. Then at Sunderland yet another ill-fated spell left them relegated, rock bottom of the Premier League in a relentlessly dispiriting campaign that also revealed he had threatened to ‘slap’ a female reporter as the scrutiny mounted.

Both Sociedad and the Mackems had hoped that the unravelling that had occurred at Old Trafford was ultimately a blip and that the alchemy conjured on Merseyside a long time ago could be somehow rediscovered. It was a gamble that cost them very dear.

“I would still consider myself in the elite group of managers. If it was me against someone else I’d trust myself,” the defamed manager said last year. “You get knocks but you get back on the horse.”

And here is where we get to the really exasperating aspect of David Moyes’ and his proverbial nine lives.

Because in any other walk of life his ‘trust’ in himself would be utterly irrelevant after six years of almost constant failure: it would be the distinct lack of trust shown by others that would matter. In everyday life. In relationships. In almost all work spaces. In business. If lucky you might get a second chance, a third in exceptional circumstances. A fourth? A fifth? You must be joking.

Yet in football – a business worth billions and as cut-throat as they come – there is a bizarre, nonsensical long-standing cultural trope to stick with what they know, even when what they know is wrong. Failed at a club? Here’s another one. Failed again? Here, have another go.

You get back on the horse, in Moyes’ words, spoken with the awareness of how screwed up his industry is and the innate confidence that comes from that.

Anyone else would be made to walk for the rest of their sorry days.
