Heavy rain calls off first day after Bangladesh lose three

Mominul led the visitors’ resistance with an unbeaten 40

Hemant Brar27-Sep-20241:16

Manjrekar: India have found a very handy third seamer in Akash Deep

A combination of bad light and heavy rain meant only 35 overs were possible on the opening day of the second Test between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur, in which Bangladesh scored 107 for 3.The toss itself was delayed by an hour because of a wet outfield caused by overnight rain. When the toss finally happened, the coin fell in India’s favour. Under overcast skies, Rohit Sharma had no hesitation in opting to bowl first – the first time India had done so in a home Test since 2015.Rohit expected his three seamers – India fielded an unchanged XI – to exploit the conditions. He said the pitch was a little soft and had a bit more grass than the usual Kanpur surface. Bangladesh read the conditions completely differently. Not only did they want to bat first but also picked three spinners.Jasprit Bumrah got the ball to move both ways and bowled three maidens to start with, but could not take a wicket. Mohammed Siraj did not find any success either as Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan survived the opening spells. Zakir, in fact, could not open his account despite facing 20 balls in that period.Things changed when Akash Deep was introduced in the ninth over. With his third ball, he had Zakir walking at him and edging it towards gully, where Yashasvi Jaiswal went low to his right and pouched it with both hands. The TV umpire was consulted about the fairness of the catch. He had only one good angle but it was enough for him to deduce that the ball went straight into Jaiswal’s hands.A few overs later, Akash Deep struck again. Continuing from around the wicket, he got one to beat Shadman’s inside edge and hit him on the pad. The on-field umpire denied the huge lbw appeal – it looked like the ball, at best, would have clipped leg stump. India opted for a review and, to everyone’s surprise, the projection showed the ball hitting a good chunk of the leg stump.Shanto came out with a positive mindset and picked up a few streaky boundaries off the outer half of the bat. Mominul, too, had begun tentatively but grew in confidence as the innings progressed. He picked up a four each off Akash Deep and Siraj via the ramp before driving Bumrah through the covers. As the last over before lunch was in progress, it started to drizzle which delayed the second session by 15 minutes. When play resumed, R Ashwin did not take long to get one go with the arm from around the wicket and beat Shanto’s inside edge to trap him lbw for 31. It ended the 51-run stand for the third wicket.Mominul and Mushfiqur Rahim had a few nervy moments after that. Akash Deep got Mushfiqur’s outside edge but it went for four through the gap between third slip and gully. Three overs later, Mominul went after a full delivery from Bumrah, only to edge it over the cordon for another boundary. That was also the last over before it became too dark to continue. Soon, it started pouring down, forcing the umpires to call off play just before 3pm local time.

Russell and TKR pay tribute to CPL legend Bravo

The allrounder received a guard of honour in what seemed to be his final CPL game

Andre Russell summed up the overwhelming feeling at the Queen’s Park Oval as the Trinidad crowd turned up in droves on Wednesday to celebrate one of its greatest T20 heroes in what was possibly his last CPL game. Before the start of CPL 2024, Dwayne Bravo had announced he would retire from the league after the end of the ongoing season. But he has played just two games so far this season, and the one against defending champions Guyana Amazon Warriors at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain might have been his last, Russell suggested after winning the Player-of-the-Match award and dedicating it to his good friend.”I’m just happy to be part of this game tonight and that’s the reason why so much emotion was kind of behind that celebration,” Russell said after Trinbago Knight Riders beat Amazon Warriors by five wickets. “He [Bravo] deserves a win tonight. You have helped me a lot with my cricket – how to outthink the batter and then to be a smarter bowler. You’re not going to get it right all the time but once you have the right mindset to get the execution, I think you’re on the right way.”We’re going to miss him but I hope he is still going to be around for the rest of the tournament. But he’s definitely one we all listen to and we all look up to and you know he might shed a bit of tears tonight inside the changing room, but I appreciate him.”Related

Russell, who has played 130 matches alongside Bravo, including 74 for West Indies, spoke glowing of the impact Bravo has had on his own career.”I think me being who I am today, Bravo has a lot to do with it,” Russell said. “I used to wicketkeep, then I started bowling and batting at No.10, No.11 and 9. Watching him play in Test cricket for West Indies – bowling good pace, fielding and diving and all those things and then when he comes to bat, he gets the job done.”

The rest of the TKR players and support staff also seemed to suggest this might have been Bravo’s final CPL match as they honoured him by wearing his No. 47 shirt and giving him a guard of honour before he stepped onto the field.Bravo bowled Keemo Paul for 3 and snagged a sharp catch at slip to dismiss Tim Robinson for 34. Then, during the innings break, he was driven around the Queen’s Park Oval on a cart as he signed balls and sent them into the crowd.Bravo is the most decorated player in the CPL, having won five titles in all, including three with TKR. He led TKR to back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018 before captaining St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to their first title in 2021.He was instrumental in building the Trinidad franchise from scratch before Kieron Pollard joined TKR and took over the captaincy from Bravo. Before the start of the Trinidad leg of the tournament, Pollard also toasted Bravo’s role in TKR’s success.

“The impact has been fantastic and tremendous in terms of the individuals he has brought to the franchise from all over the world,” Pollard said of Bravo in a chat with . “At one point an Australian coach in Simon Helmot, he won a championship with him, to the local support staff who have been here since the inception. Persons who are well recognised in Trinidad & Tobago and the Caribbean. We have Ruel Rigsby, the physio, and Kelly Sankar [massage therapist], who has been here since the inception and Sheldon [Sewnarine] who is one of the logistics guys.”So these are the people who he would’ve put and trusted in supporting roles for him and bringing excellent cricketers of generations – Jacques Kallis, Brendon McCullum and Johan Bothas of the world – and our own icons in Darren Bravos and Denesh Ramdins and understanding what’s needed to build a cricket team. I think he has done a fantastic job and there’s no better place to finish his cricketing career in the Caribbean than TKR, a team he has built.”From team-mates to opponents, Dwayne Bravo and Andre Russell have lit up T20 leagues around the world•BCCI

Russell is back with a bangHaving been troubled by an ankle injury during the first half of the CPL, Russell marked his return from a two-week break with five boundaries, including four sixes, in his 36 off 15 balls, to help TKR chase down 149 after a middle-order wobble. Prior to the start of this CPL, Russell had also been rested for West Indies’ home T20I series against South Africa, but his return, along with Bravo’s, lent so much domestic depth to TKR’s XI that they could afford to play with just two overseas players in Tim David and Waqar Salamkheil.”It feels good to be back in the middle,” Russell said. “I’ve been struggling with an ankle injury over the past couple of weeks and you know these guys [support staff] have been doing some amazing job, getting me back on the park. I was going to say ‘thanks to me’ because with the dedication and hard work to make sure that I do whatever the physio wants me to do: wake up early morning, head to the gym, in the pool, and do whatever. So, when you work hard you get good results and I’m happy.”

David Moyes now targeting specific signing for Everton after double exit

Everton manager David Moyes has personally picked out his priority focus for the summer transfer window, according to reliable journalist Patrick Boyland.

Moyes set to be backed by Everton's owners

The new Premier League season may not be too far away, but there is still plenty of time for the Blues to conduct some important transfer business.

In fact, a positive claim from journalist Miguel Delaney has even suggested that Everton’s owners, The Friedkin Group, could make as much as £150m available for new signings, as Everton look to move away from being a relegation threatened team year upon year.

Everton manager DavidMoyesreacts

The likes of James McAtee, Douglas Luiz, Maghnes Akliouche, Merlin Rohl, Takefusa Kubo and Georgios Vagiannidis are all mentioned as options by Delaney, ahead of what could be exciting next month or so.

Elsewhere, Everton are said to be in contact with Atletico Mineiro defender Lyanco over a summer move to Merseyside, while they have also enquired about the availability of Rangers striker Hamza Igamane, as Moyes looks to add more attacking quality to his squad after the exit of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Moyes wants key position strengthened at Everton

Now, according to The Athletic‘s Boyland, Everton boss Moyes is targeting a new right winger as a priority during the summer transfer window.

It is claimed that it “will be top of their list” ahead of the new season, especially after the double exit of loanee pair Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom, who have returned to their parent clubs.

A new right-sided option makes perfect sense for Everton, with the position standing out as one that lacks quality and depth currently.

On the left flank, Iliman Ndiaye has been a revelation for the Blues, wowing with his creative brilliance and scoring nine league goals last season, and they need to look to sign a player with similar levels of ability.

Unfortunately, rumoured Blues target Johan Bakayoko has completed a move to RB Leipzig, acting as a blow to Moyes, but there should still be plenty of options out there.

The aforementioned Kubo could be the perfect alternative choice for Everton, having impressed in Spain and even been dubbed “The Japanese Messi” in his homeland of Japan, such is his quality and style of play.

The 24-year-old has 41 goal contributions (23 goals and 18 assists) in 137 appearances for Sociedad, and while most adept at cutting inside from the right flank onto his left foot, he can also thrive across the attack. For that reason, he should be considered the Blues’ No.1 right-sided target.

Leeds now offered chance to sign "sensation" who has scored 38 PL goals

Leeds United are in the market for proven Premier League quality and have now been offered the chance to sign a striker who has previously delivered in the English top-flight, according to a report.

Daniel Farke wants Leeds United to add attacking quality

It comes as no secret that the key to staying in the Premier League is by possessing an adequate level of attacking flair. Still, nobody is under any illusions that smart recruitment is needed at Elland Road to ensure options are up to scratch.

Speaking after his side’s pre-season draw to Villarreal, Daniel Farke has admitted Leeds need to acquire competition in the final third as his side are ‘not ready’ to take on the rigours of England’s most prestigious division without reinforcements.

Leeds United manager DanielFarkebefore the match

He stated: “We are not naive. We know that even in comparison to our Championship offence, you could say that we are not much improved. We know in the offence we are not ready for Premier League level. We’ve proven we can be ready for one game and for that I am not too concerned at the moment as it stands.”

With that in mind, Leeds are still very much in the race to sign Everton’s Beto after previously being linked with a move for the Toffees’ forward earlier in the window.

Versatile attacker Jota Silva is also on the Whites’ radar and looks set to leave Nottingham Forest. Nevertheless, Sporting Lisbon are also in the race to sign the Portugal international.

Time is marching on, and plenty of work remains to be done. Now, Leeds have been offered someone who could revolutionise their attack in the Premier League.

Leeds United offered chance to sign Aleksandar Mitrovic

Accoridng to TBR Football, Leeds have been offered the chance to sign Al-Hilal forward Aleksandar Mitrovic by intermediaries and it remains to be seen whether a potential loan move could materialise involving the Serbia international.

Fulham and Sunderland have also been contacted over his potential availability amid speculation that the former Newcastle United man could leave the Gulf region as his current employers enter the market for a new striker.

How many goals has Aleksandar Mitrovic scored in the Premier League?

Labelled a “sensation” by former Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic, the 30-year-old is a recognisable name with considerable top-flight experience that could meet Farke wish to improve his pool of attacking options.

However, it remains to be seen whether his wages would be affordable for Leeds, given that Mitrovic is said to earn £400,000 per week on the books at the Al-Hilal Stadium.

Scoring 68 goals in 79 appearances since his departure from Fulham, the Smederevo-born man has maintained the consistency shown from his time in England and if he were to arrive at Elland Road could certainly have a positive impact on their survival chances.

Santner takes 13 to hand India their first home Test series defeat since 2012

New Zealand now completed their first-ever Test series win in India after wins in Bengaluru and Pune

Sidharth Monga26-Oct-20241:50

Manjrekar: ‘Indian batters were short of confidence against spin’

Mitchell Santner, never more than three wickets in an innings or six in a match, bowled New Zealand to a historic win in Pune with match figures of 13 for 157, the third-best by any visiting bowler in India. He bowled 29 overs on the trot for six wickets in the second innings to go with his unbroken spell of 19.3 overs in the first innings for 7 for 53 to give New Zealand their first series win in India and India their first home series defeat since 2012.Despite a sore side, Santner missed just one over from his end since he started bowling in the first innings. He was instrumental in intercepting India’s audacious bid for a chase of 359, which was fuelled by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 77 off 65 that took India to 96 for 1 at better than a run a ball. Santner had little support from the other end as Ajaz Patel’s ordinary series continued and Glenn Phillips mixed easy deliveries with good ones.Santner kept beating the batters in the air with his dip and changes in pace and angle, and registered his first ten-wicket haul in first-class cricket in the process. It was an absolutely necessary intervention because India were on an almighty roll after triggering a 5 for 24 collapse with the ball and then a sensational start to the chase by Jaiswal. Things became so desperate that New Zealand burnt two reviews on Jaiswal. In the morning, needing a perfect session to prevent the door from being slammed in their face, India started with the experienced duo of Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin instead of the form bowler Washington Sundar, who had taken 11 of the 15 New Zealand wickets up to that point. It didn’t start well for India. The first ball from Ashwin produced an edge that Rohit Sharma didn’t go for. Tom Blundell and Phillips added a quick 33 to the overnight score. That Jadeja turned the ball big at a pace in the mid-90s was only a promising sign for New Zealand. Even full balls were difficult to hit out as Santner and Ajaz discovered with catches in the deep.Yashasvi Jaiswal pulled the second ball of the innings for six on his way to a 65-ball 77•AFP/Getty Images

Before that, though, India needed a breakthrough, which arrived with a natural variation that went past Blundell’s inside edge. That it was Jadeja’s first wicket of the match emphasised where India lost the match: a rare outbowling of two of their greatest match-winners, who had brought them 18 consecutive series wins at home.It was no surprise that India came out swinging with the bat after they had been pinned to the crease in the first innings. Jaiswal drove at a wide length ball first up, but the edge fell just short of gully. It didn’t stop him from flicking the second ball for a six, the first of his three, which took him level on the record for most sixes in a calendar year. He employed both the sweep and the charge at the spinners to mess with the bowlers’ lengths. The margin for error was almost non-existent as he hit out at Tim Southee, Ajaz and Phillips. His extra-cover drive for a six off Phillips on this pitch was a jaw-dropping shot.It is not often that New Zealand spinners bowl them to a Test win on their own. Here Santner was being asked to do it on own having never taken more than three wickets in a Test innings before this Test. He was the only one who maintained some control during the Jaiswal onslaught.Santner got the better of Rohit first as he got the ball to dip on him and the extra bounce got the bat-pad dismissal. Shubman Gill, who had got stuck on the crease with Jaiswal in the first innings, came out attacking, and the two added 62 in under ten overs to leave New Zealand nervous. It’s not that the pitch had eased out. The intent of the batters left the bowlers under intense pressure, and every small error was being punished. In essence, though, all the spinners had to do was draw consistent forward-defensive prods from the batters without getting driven. The moment Santner started doing that, he started creating chances. Then he bowled flatter while still being full, pushing Gill back and taking the edge with the turn for the first of two sharp catches for Daryl Mitchell at slip.Rishabh Pant, attempting a non-existent single, was run out as India’s collapse gathered steam•BCCI

The next one was Jaiswal, a classic turning-pitch dismissal. The first part of it was to find a spot that Jaiswal could neither go back to nor drive from. Then the first ball turned big to beat his inside edge, and the next one went straight on to take the edge for Mitchell. Not a mean wicket to bring up your first ten-wicket haul.Rishabh Pant then paid the price for not saying no. Virat Kohli played one behind square and started running. The ball had gone to Santner’s left. Pant had every right to send Kohli back, but he ran through. Not even a dive was enough to get him in.It was like Santner didn’t have a side strain to nurse. Between overs, he would keep stretching, but swooped in on balls in his vicinity and you couldn’t take the ball away from him. He made Kohli play back to a fullish ball, which trapped him lbw. Sarfaraz Khan fell to a slow teasing ball that turned and hit off stump.Phillips finally got on the board when Will Young pulled off a stunning catch at short leg to send back India’s hero of the match, Washington. Ashwin and Jadeja looked the most comfortable batting pair as they added 39 for the eighth wicket, teasing India with the question of what if they hadn’t lost so many wickets by the time the older softer ball stopped behaving wildly. It was Santner who broke the partnership by luring Ashwin into a drive and taking the edge to Mitchell. The wait for the final wickets was frustrating but it came through outfield catches off Ajaz, who ended up protecting his record for the best match figures for a visiting bowler in India.

Cameron Bancroft emerged from a horror form slump with an unbeaten half-century to steer Western Australia to a powerful position against South Australia in their Sheffield Shield match.Bancroft, who was overlooked for Australia’s team for the first Test against India, was unbeaten on 72 as WA reached 185 for 2 at stumps on day three of the pink ball day-night fixture at Adelaide Oval.Related

All-round Webster shines, Patterson falls for 99

SA opener Henry Hunt earlier completed his 10th first-class century, posting 106 as the home side was all out for 253 – a first innings deficit of 120 runs.Bancroft and WA’s first innings centurion Jayden Goodwin then turned the screws, taking the visitors to a lead of 305.Bancroft failed to press his Test claims with a wretched run of Shield scores: 0, 0, 8, 2, 12, 11 and a golden duck. He also made just 0, 16, 3 and 0 for Australia A against the touring Indians before the Test squad was selected. But on Monday he struck three fours and a six in a 206-ball knock.Goodwin, who made a polished 139 in the first innings, continued his fine fixture with a 139-ball innings featuring nine fours before falling to Harry Conway. Bancroft and Goodwin put on 132 runs for the second wicket after SA quick Spencer Johnson had Sam Fanning caught behind for a second-ball duck.Earlier, SA’s Hunt banked his century and acting skipper Ben Manenti was 73 not out in an innings when Harry Nielsen was the only other batsman to pass 10.The home side struggled to combat WA pacemen Joel Paris, who claimed 5 for 34 from 20 overs, and Jhye Richardson who had come through an injury scare on the second day.
