More prolific than Salah: Liverpool plot big bid for 'Europe’s best forward'

Liverpool’s Champions League exit makes a firm comment on the importance of the summer ahead.

Ultimately, Paris Saint-Germain were better than Arne Slot’s side, deserving winners over the course of the two legs. But some fans will no doubt feel aggrieved by rather uninspiring attacking play. Effort and ability abounded in red in the home fixture, but a 1-0 defeat led to an agonising exit in the shootout, Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones missing.

To follow a hackneyed saying: penalties are a lottery. However, there was something emblematic about Nunez’s strike, not poor, per se, but confidently saved by Gigi Donnarumma to raise an already confident French side and see them finish the job.

This time next week, Liverpool may have retained their Carabao Cup throne, sitting as runaway Premier League leaders besides. But the pain was clear after losing their place among Europe’s elite until we go again, as football invariably does, next season.

Mohamed Salah is known to wear his heart on his Red sleeve, and indeed he cut a disconsolate figure as the Parisens rejoiced under the Anfield lights. Perhaps it’s futile to read into it, but you can’t help but wonder if this was his final foray on the European stage for the Merseysiders.

Mohamed Salah's Liverpool future

Out of contract at the end of the season, 32-year-old Salah is approaching the final phase of his prime. He joined Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017 and has since lifted almost every major honour, leading the charge toward his and Anfield’s second Premier League title in its contemporary branding.

Mohamed Salah for Liverpool

With 243 goals and 110 assists across 393 appearances, there’s no question Salah’s one of the finest forwards of his generation, and FSG are intent on tying him down for the next few years, within reason, of course.

Therein lies the problem. Salah is already Liverpool’s highest-paid player in history on £350k per week, and while he’s a supreme athlete and matchless goalscorer from the right flank, there’s no certainty that he will still be firing at full throttle for the next two seasons.

He will be dismayed that he couldn’t do more in the last 16 of the Champions League, hungering for a second bite at the incomparable cherry, but Salah is about to dethrone four-in-a-row Premier League champions Manchester City, posting 32 goals and 22 assists across all competitions.

To replace him would take something special, someone proven to have enough to breach Slot’s backline. So then, who do the Reds have in mind?

Liverpool chasing one of the best forwards in Europe

Not the most popular name on Liverpool territory right now, but Ousmane Dembele, 27, has been one of the best players in Europe this season and is rivalling Salah for the Ballon d’Or title.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

And according to Spanish reports, the France international has been earmarked as a potential Salah replacement, having followed him for a long time.

It’s noted that the Anfield board are admirers of his ‘speed, and his effectiveness in front of goal’.

As a result, they are now willing to submit an offer of around €100m (£84m) to PSG. Such a lofty price tag would make this a difficult deal to navigate, but the allure of Premier League football after hitting his prime might hold sway in a potential summer saga.

Why Ousmane Dembele could replace Salah

It’s becoming clear that Dembele’s incredible form has stretched beyond that of a ‘purple patch.’ Indeed, having scored 21 goals since the start of 2025 (29 from 36 since the start of the season), he is turning into one of the finest in the business. In actual fact, he’s been even more prolific than that man Salah this season, scoring every 1.2 games to the Egyptian’s 1.3.

As such, the Times’ Peter Rutzler has even proclaimed that PSG boss Luis Enrique has “transformed Dembele into Europe’s most prolific forward.” Is there any reason to doubt this right now?

Absolutely not. Dembele ranks among the top 1% of forwards across the whole of Europe for goals scored (1.00), the top 1% for shot-creating actions and the top 1% again for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

Moreover, he has proved that he can throw down with the best of them on the continental stage, bagging eight goal involvements from ten Champions League fixtures and indeed scoring at Anfield en route to besting Slot’s Reds.

Over those two-legged ties, it’s safe to say he got the better of the great Virgil van Dijk and his defensive colleagues, amassing seven dribbles, three key passes and five shots on target.

Development in football is not linear. Kylian Mbappé and Yamine Lamal, for example, might have achieved superstardom at a prodigious age but Salah did not hit staggering heights until he signed for Liverpool in a £34m deal aged 25.

Dembele’s career progression line has been a curious thing. A rip-roaring start to the senior stage saw him earn a transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona, rising to £135.5m, when he was merely 20 years old. It’s probably fair to say it didn’t quite work out at Camp Nou.

And at PSG, for a long while, the Les Bleus star has struggled to break from the shadow of iconic figures such as Mbappé, Neymar Jr. and Lionel Messi, but now, as the main man, he has finally hit full bloom.

With only six assists across all competitions this term, Dembele does not possess Salah’s creative ingenuity, though he is imbued with a new-found level of confidence and prolificness of a player belatedly coming into their own.

Liverpool managerArneSlotbefore the match

While it would cost FSG a pretty penny, Dembele is one of the hottest properties on the market right now, interchangeable and effective from all three prongs of the attacking trident. Slot would relish the addition of such a player, with pace, potency and power combined.

Should Salah leave, Liverpool would do very well to find a more suitable forward.

Liverpool struck gold on "extraordinary" star who's worth more than Dembele

Liverpool have hit the jackpot with the impressive forward who is worth more than Ousmane Dembele.

No Brasileirão, no entanto, liderou sozinho, estufando as redes 18 vezes.

O desempenho foi repetido por Hulk no ano passado. Campeão das duas competições com o Atlético Mineiro, o atacante foi também o artilheiro de ambas: foram 8 tentos na Copa do Brasil e 19 no Brasileiro.

Newcastle now open talks to sign 20-goal striker who once owned Lascelles

In what would see them add even more firepower next to Alexander Isak, Newcastle United have reportedly opened talks to sign a 20-goal striker for Eddie Howe this summer.

Newcastle make first move for 20-goal star

It should come as little shock that the Magpies have set their sights on an in-form forward for a number of reasons. Of course, the negative reason is that the rumours around Isak’s future are unlikely to go away anytime soon and Newcastle would be wise to have a ready-made replacement waiting in the wings. The same can be said for their need to replace Callum Wilson, who’s set to depart as a free agent this summer.

Better dribbler than Gordon: Newcastle now plotting to sign "crazy" winger

Meanwhile, on a more positive front, those at St James’ Park could simply reinforce their frontline to match the quality of the Champions League. They’ve struggled for depth in recent years, but added firepower would certainly go a long way towards solving that problem.

If anyone needed reminding of the firepower that Newcastle already have at their disposal, meanwhile, then Isak’s stunning goal for Sweden in a 5-1 thrashing of Northern Ireland certainly came at the right time.

Even after watching their Swedish star score such goals though, the Magpies have still got their sights set on signing another forward. According to Calcio Mercato, Newcastle have now opened talks with the agent of Moise Kean over a potential summer move.

The former Everton and Juventus man has finally rediscovered his best form at Fiorentina this season and could yet reap the rewards as a result. Already in contact, it’s Newcastle who could offer the Italian a shot at Premier League redemption.

Whether he can be lured back to English football after a nightmare spell last time out remains to be seen, however.

Kean is back to his best after horror Everton spell

For a long time it looked as though Kean was destined to become the latest case of what might have been, only for Fiorentina to help turn his career around at long last. Finally realising his potential, it wasn’t so long ago that he was showing glimpses of his quality against Newcastle and Jamaal Lascelles – scoring in a 2-2 draw in the 2019/20 campaign.

The striker put all three of his attempts on target that night, and also recorded a 100 per cent pass success rate, while Lascelles managed zero tackles and ended up with one of the lowest ratings on the pitch from WhoScored.

Since then, it has far from been a simple journey and his Everton career went downhill, but after scoring 20 goals in all competitions in Italy this season, Kean has deservedly earned the praise of Fiorentina boss Raffaele Palladino.

Fiorentina'sMoiseKean

Palladino told reporters in October: “Kean is demonstrating his great technical and human value. He’s a great professional and an extraordinary guy. In the penalty area, he can be even more incisive. This is perhaps the only step he’s missing.”

In the months that have followed that praise, the Italian forward has arguably found that missing step and become one of the most clinical forwards in Serie A. Now, when the summer arrives, Kean could find himself on his way back to the Premier League.

Alex Lees, David Bedingham drive Durham into ascendancy

Formidable stand leaves Leicestershire facing stiff fourth-day challenge

Division Two leaders Durham will seek to turn a lead of 391 runs into a fifth win of the season on the final day of their LV= Insurance County Championship meeting with Leicestershire after opener Alex Lees posted his second hundred of the match.Lees, who made 101 in the first innings, was stranded on 99 when bad light threatened to end play earlier, but after stewing in the dressing room for almost three quarters of an hour was able to celebrate shortly after the resumption. The left-hander, scoring tons in each innings for the first time in his first-class career, finished on 138 not out with David Bedingham unbeaten on 112, the third-wicket pair having added 212 so far as Durham closed on 296 for two.Earlier, Leicestershire posted their second highest total of the season but were still 95 behind on first innings, despite Colin Ackermann’s fine 146, Ben Raine taking four for 114 and on-loan leg spinner Matt Parkinson three for 115 as the home side were bowled out for 422.Durham skipper Scott Borthwick will look to declare early, bearing in mind it took his bowlers almost 110 overs to take 10 first-innings wickets on a pitch still holding together, and with the seemingly batter-friendly Kookaburra ball.Durham were able to replace 19-year-old Stanley McAlindon with Matty Potts following the latter’s release by England. Leicestershire’s young leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, who had been named as a potential substitute in this match, remained with Ben Stokes’s squad. The addition of Potts, who took 13 wickets in the corresponding fixture last season, added to the challenge facing Leicestershire on the third morning in cool, overcast conditions after resuming on 335 for four.Nonetheless, while they avoided the follow-on and picked up a couple more batting points, they would have been disappointed to lose their last six wickets for 77.In the event, Potts too often dropped short to no great effect in his opening six-over burst, while Raine demonstrated the virtue of bowling at the stumps by dismissing Wiaan Mulder, Tom Scriven and Chris Wright all leg before in two spells, one from each end, lifting his wickets tally to 34 for the season, two more than Potts.Ackermann, with whom Mulder shared a 106-run stand for the fifth wicket, was much harder to dislodge, yet with the sixth 150 of his first-class career just one boundary away a rather weary-looking cut shot at a ball from Matt Parkinson outside off stump saw him caught at gully.Potts returned after lunch, bowled full and straight and nipped out Callum Parkinson and Matt Salisbury in the space of three deliveries of his second over, knocking off stump out of the ground in each case, in so doing grabbing a third bowling point for Durham in the nick of time.As in the first innings, Durham went hard against the new ball and had doubled their lead by the 20th over, although at a cost of a couple of wickets. Michael Jones was well caught in the leg-side deep by Ed Barnes as he pulled the ex-Durham seamer Salisbury. Scott Borthwick pulled Salisbury for six over the shorter boundary but misread a ball from off-spinner Ackermann, who took an almost casual return catch one-handed above his head.Meanwhile, Lees combined muscle and innovation to post 50 from 65 balls before Bedingham launched into Ackermann and then Parkinson with driven sixes. By tea, Durham’s lead was 240, putting them on course to be 400 in front by the close.Bedingham drove Barnes for a couple of boundaries, the first of which took him to 53 from 56 balls, and while thereafter the accumulation of runs was more steady than spectacular, the pair had still extended the lead to 315 when bad light forced a 44-minute interruption. After his tantalising wait on 99, Lees blocked out a maiden from Ackermann before lofting Parkinson over long-on for his 10th four from 158 balls, picking up his first six the over afterwards, although he was dropped on the midwicket boundary in doing so.As the pair sought to score quickly, Bedingham joined him in reaching three figures from 105 balls, having hit eight fours and four sixes, three of them off Parkinson.

Sancho 2.0: Man City lost "electric" gem for £0, now he's outscoring Foden

Manchester City have clearly been struggling this campaign to hit the same levels they have done in the previous four Premier League campaigns, currently sitting fifth with 48 points, a whopping 22 points away from first-place Liverpool.

Despite their poor form, Pep Guardiola’s side are still topping plenty of the league’s metrics, however.

Rico Lewis

They are averaging the most possession per game in the division with 60.8% and have the highest successful pass percentage with 89.9%. They also sit second for shots per game, averaging 16.1 shots per match, with only Liverpool averaging more with 17.

Clearly, City have identified their need to invest, spending big money in the January transfer window to bring Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez to the club.

But, who has been underperforming this season, which has led to such heavy investment?

The biggest losers from Man City's awful season

One man who has underperformed since returning to play for Guardiola’s side this season is İlkay Gündoğan. The German has made 39 appearances for the Citizens so far, scoring two goals and providing three assists. It’s a far cry from that 2021/22 season where he was involved in 16 goals across all competitions.

18 of his appearances have come from the base of midfield, a byproduct of Rodri being missing through injury, which has led to an underwhelming return for the 34-year-old midfielder, not having the same effect on the ball for his side, whilst not solving their out-of-possession issues either.

Another key figure who was a huge part of Manchester City’s infamous treble campaign, but now finds himself lower in the pecking order, is Jack Grealish.

The 29-year-old has made 26 appearances this season, netting two goals, providing five assists and totaling 1,319 minutes played.

The English winger, who has struggled with a few injuries in the past two seasons, now finds himself behind the likes of Jeremy Doku, Savinho, Marmoush and even Phil Foden, who himself has had a very poor season thus far, underwhelming for both club and country.

The Englishman, who was criticised by Thomas Tuchel during the international break, has struggled to replicate the dazzling numbers of 2023/24 when he won the PFA Player of the Year award.

He has scored just ten times, down from the ridiculous 27-goal haul of last term. So, perhaps they may regret losing another academy star…

Better than Foden: Man City's lost "wonderkid"

Spending two years in the City academy system from 2018-2020 was a highly promising individual, a “wonderkid” in the words of scout Jacek Kulig.

That player was Jamie Gittens. Remarkably, he never played for City’s U21s but did feature in two U18 Premier League games. Then, in a puff of smoke, rather like Jadon Sancho, he headed for Borussia Dortmund.

Well, at BVB, it’s safe to say he’s starring. Gittens, who was in Lee Carsley’s latest England U21 made, has made 40 appearances for Dortmund so far this season, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists in 2,535 minutes played.

Boasting “electric pace” in the words of analyst Ben Mattinson, the English winger is certainly starting to turn heads in Europe, with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United linked with the young winger.

So, how does he compare to that man Foden? Certainly favourably in the goalscoring department.

When comparing Foden and Gittens’ underlying metrics this season, you can see how their playstyles differ, with the former being more creation heavy, looking to drop into pockets of space, play progressive passes and create for others, whilst the latter has a direct manner, looking to attack the box with carries and score goals.

Whilst Foden isn’t a natural winger, he has seen 18 of his 38 appearances come from wide areas, due to the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and now Marmoush, who can both play as that central attacking midfielder in close vicinity to Erling Haaland.

Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Bynoe-Gittens in action

On the other hand, Gittens would have provided City with something they have lacked in wide areas this season, and that’s goals, with both Doku and Savinho excelling in the creation department, as opposed to the direct, high-shot-volume playstyle of their former academy star.
