Fabrizio Romano reveals Chelsea plan for Andrey Santos amid Strasbourg form

Fabrizio Romano has revealed the Chelsea plan for youngster Andrey Santos, amid the South American’s fine form out on loan at sister club Strasbourg.

Chelsea supporters make Andrey Santos demand in January

The 20-year-old, who’s bagged eight goals and three assists in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side this season, is enjoying an excellent campaign in France – so much so that there were calls from some Chelsea supporters for the club to recall Santos in the January transfer window.

Enzo Fernández has recently returned from injury, with Roméo Lavia still sidelined. These absences left Enzo Maresca short in midfield for a while, and the Italian reportedly asked Stamford Bridge hierarchy to bring in a new midfielder during the window as a result (Simon Phillips).

Chelsea reached out to the representatives of Kobbie Mainoo in an audacious move, but ended up sealing a £12 million deal for Mathis Amougou from Saint-Etienne.

The 19-year-old has put pen to paper on an eight-year contract, with Amougou set for an immediate Chelsea first-team role before he heads out on loan to Strasbourg in the summer.

However, while Maresca’s midfield has been bolstered, the question still remains – why didn’t Chelses recall Santos from his Strasbourg loan?

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, taking to X this week, has moved to provide some clarity on the Brazilian’s situation and what his Chelsea future holds in store.

Andrey Santos set for "key" first team role at Chelsea next season

As per Romano, Santos is set for a “key” first-team role at Chelsea under Maresca next season. Stamford Bridge officials are said to be ecstatic with his development across the channel, so much so that they’re already planning for the 2025/2026 campaign with Santos firmly in mind.

It is worth noting that the starlet has even taken on captaincy roles during his time in France, with Liam Rosenior hailing Santos’ attitude and application behind-the-scenes.

“He was great. He constantly shows professionalism every day in his work, he constantly wants to improve and constantly trains at 100%,” said Rosenior.

“There were other players that had a worthy cause to be captain, but I felt that Andrey was the right choice. I felt that he didn’t do the armband any disservice at all.”

Pollard bemoans 'sad day' for WI cricket, says players not at fault for T20 WC exit

Former captain says team’s T20I decline started in 2016, and urges “all stakeholders” to come together and find a way forward

Kieron Pollard has described West Indies’ failure to make the Super 12s of the 2022 T20 World Cup as a “sad day” for Caribbean cricket. The former captain, who retired in April, said he was both “surprised” and disappointed at West Indies’ exit and agreed that head coach Phil Simmons will now come under pressure to keep his job. Pollard, however, stressed that the blame had to be shared by all stakeholders and not any individual.”A bit surprised, to be honest that [West Indies] weren’t able to get over the line against the other teams,” he told , a Trinidad-based radio station last weekend. “But again, that speaks volumes of where our cricket as is at the moment. I feel it. I feel it for the guys because they are the ones that are going to get the bashing. And it’s not all their fault.”Having already failed to secure direct entry into the Super 12s (permitted to the top eight-ranked teams at a pre-determined cut-off date as well as the hosts Australia), Nicholas Pooran’s team struggled badly in the first round, notching a solitary win, against Zimbabwe, while losing to Scotland and Ireland which forced them out of the tournament.Related

Ponting calls West Indies' early exit a 'disgrace'

Skerritt blames batters in scathing attack after West Indies' T20 World Cup exit

The shocking exit invited derision both at home and abroad. Cricket West Indies president Ricky Skerritt issued a scathing statement saying a “post-mortem” would be carried out immediately, while former Australia captain Ricky Ponting described the team’s performances as a “disgrace.”Pollard, though, was not interested in hauling up Pooran and his men. Instead he highlighted a wider point, especially on selections, which he said played a part in their dismal showing at the 2021 T20 World Cup as well, where he was the captain. West Indies crashed out of that competition with a solitary win alongside four defeats.”We have a young captain, we have young players, guys who would have played only a handful of [matches in] T20 cricket and now they are in the World Cup,” Pollard said. “And when I look back at it, I sit back and I have a smile on my face. Because I remember some of the things that was said last year around this time, when some individuals weren’t selected.”I just had to remind these people that there was a World Cup we were going to [in 2021] and another bilateral series [in New Zealand]. And now some of the individuals get the opportunity to play in the World Cup. And, again, look what has happened. It’s no fault of theirs. But when we tried to sort of protect them and let people understand [in 2021], they were not ready for that, we were lambasted. There were a lot of things that were said that were very derogatory at times. It’s a sad day for West Indies cricket and all of us.”Just like last year’s World Cup, West Indies’ selections became a big talking point. The Desmond Haynes-led panel named a 15-member squad that did not feature the two best T20 players in the Caribbean: Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. At the time, Haynes explained this decision by saying Russell was not performing the way they would like and Narine appeared disinterested in playing for West Indies. The CWI then dropped Shimron Hetmyer for failing to get on a rescheduled flight to Australia. Only two players, Pooran and Evin Lewis, were part of the original 15-member squads in both 2021 and 2022. Along with Rovman Powell, they were the only three with at least 50 T20Is under their belt. Jason Holder has 49, and is a former captain and a World Cup winner. After that, West Indies were struggling for experienced campaigners. This was in contrast to the 2021 squad which featured Pollard, Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Russell and Lendl Simmons.”Experience means a lot. And we take that for granted in the Caribbean,” Pollard said. “[There] has been a notion over the years [that] as soon as you reach a certain age, you should be done away with. And when you have guys in the team, they want you to get out of the team or when the guys are not there, they understand the importance of the guys. And this is another situation of not having couple of experienced guys around to help the youngsters, to help the youth.”Haynes had pointed out that form in the 2022 CPL would play a key role in the World Cup squad selection. Pollard said that while that was fine, other parameters needed to be considered.”Not just based on form. It’s a holistic sort of approach on what you bring in all different facets and dimensions of the team. A guy might not be in form, but the experience and the knowledge that he can bring and share and help someone can be valuable as well. But again, we as a people, we go with what we see in front of us. So the last thing we would have seen maybe would have been the CPL before the team was selected. And whoever did well in two games, they should be selected. And that’s not how that’s not how it goes.”Pollard believes West Indies have gone “downhill” ever since their triumph in the 2016 T20 World Cup•Saurabh Das/Associated Press

“Decline started after the 2016 T20 World Cup win” According to Pollard, West Indies’ “decline” in T20 cricket is not a recent occurrence. It had begun in 2016, immediately after they became the first team to win two T20 World Cups. Since that tournament six years ago, West Indies have won 33 out of the 99 T20Is they have played, including 58 defeats. During Pollard’s tenure as T20I captain, West Indies won 13 out of 39 matches with 21 losses. Under Pooran, who replaced Pollard this May, West Indies have won eight out of 23 matches including 14 defeats.Pollard blamed the “culture” for failing to have former cricketers as part of the system and helping it grow.”We dominated in the 80s, which was all well and good [but] what did we do for the future? We went downhill. We won our last World Cup in 2012 and 2016. The decline of our T20 team started in 2016. The then captain, Daren Sammy, played his last game in 2016. All the guys who played and won that World Cup did not play cricket together for how many years after that – that is where the decline of our T20 cricket started. Since then we moved from the No. 1 in a space of months to No. 7. Why?”Coming back to the present, Pollard expects coach Simmons to face some heat, but believes that letting him go wouldn’t solve any problem.”I won’t get into all of that right here and now. The easiest thing for us to say and to do [is]: ‘fire coach, fire the captain, change the players and that’s going to be a difference.’ That’s not going to happen.”A better way, Pollard stressed, would be to have all stakeholders have an honest discussion to find a way forward to help West Indies cricket.”All stakeholders need to come together. When I say all, I mean everybody and sit down and decide where we want to take cricket in the Caribbean We need to improve our facilities. We need to have academies. We need to put things in place for the younger ones, so they can be the ones to do West Indies proud. And if we don’t do that and we just continue to fight, politicise, be insular, then we are going nowhere.”

Not just Jorgensen: Chelsea must axe 4/10 star who Carragher called "awful"

The honeymoon under Enzo Maresca is well and truly over. Chelsea were thrashed at Brighton & Hove Albion to extend their miserable Premier League run, less than a week after previously being dumped from the FA Cup at the AMEX Stadium.

Chelsea haven’t so much flatlined as regressed over the past couple of months, having now won only two of their past nine top-flight fixtures, throwing their hopes of Champions League football into jeopardy.

There’s plenty of time to turn things around and, moreover, Chelsea will remain fourth until at least this evening, but with Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu both sidelined, fears are growing.

However, it was at the back that the Blues were at their nadir on the South Coast, with Filip Jorgensen’s performance between the sticks presenting Maresca with quite the conundrum.

Chelsea's goalkeeping dilemma

It was a big night for the Chelsea goalkeeper, who has replaced Robert Sanchez as Maresca’s number-one after costly mistakes in recent months.

GOAL’s Mitchell Fretton branded the Swedish shot-stopper with a 4/10 rating after his error-strewn display, soft in failing to prevent Kauro Mitoma’s opening goal and wasteful in possession, nearly being punished late on save for Joao Pedro’s poor finish.

Jorgensen definitely wasn’t helped by his defenders but the lack of authority showed, and Brighton punished him dearly.

Chelseamanager Enzo Maresca

However, the backline will surely hang their heads in shame. Trevoh Chalobah and Levi Colwill lacked strength and composure in the centre, but Marc Cucurella endured a tough evening indeed against the two-goal Yankuba Minteh.

Marc Cucurella was "awful" vs Brighton

Cucurella has been a mainstay for Maresca’s Chelsea this season after an exemplary Euro 2024 campaign with Spain, but he’s not infallible and it showed against the Seagulls, with GOAL also marking the 26-year-old with a lowly 4/10 match rating.

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella

Such a flimsy and uninspiring display could call for Colwill to shift out to left-back for the next game. The England international flattered to deceive too but his ball-playing and tackling qualities may serve well, especially with Reece James coming back into the team.

In fairness, Cucurella was pitted against the electric Minteh, who arguably put in the statement performance of his Premier League career so far.

However, Aston Villa await next weekend and they have no shortage of exciting attackers.

Cucurella won four of his eight contested ground duels, as per Sofascore, but he was dribbled past twice by the speedster and failed to even attempt a dribble of his own as Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports co-commentary rebuked the Spaniard’s “awful defending” for the third and final goal.

Chelsea need to stabilise. This is not a crisis. Nor is it a team that has lost its way. But Maresca does have a task on his hands in steering Stamford Bridge back on course.

To do so, changes might be useful in the short term. Cucurella may need to be one of them.

Chelsea already sold a bigger talent than Sancho in “beautiful” academy gem

He’s even been praised by late football legend Pele.

Mark Wood and Dawid Malan's prospects of playing the T20 World Cup final improve

Both players took part in a net session and had fitness tests on the eve of the final

Andrew McGlashan12-Nov-20221:40

WATCH – Mark Wood, Dawid Malan in the nets ahead of the T20 World Cup final

Mark Wood and Dawid Malan will be given every chance to play the T20 World Cup final against Pakistan and there were encouraging signs with both players looking reasonably comfortable during a net session at the MCG on the eve of the match. It may be that England will still not gamble on their fitness for such a vital game, but their chances appeared better than 24 hours earlier when Matthew Mott indicated they were unlikely to play. The pair went through a fitness test when Wood bowled in the outdoor nets while Malan faced throwdowns from Mike Hussey.”They’re both improving,” Jos Buttler said before training. “Of course it’s not too many days since not being fit enough for the semi-final, but again, we’ll give them every chance possible.”If the duo did return it would be in place of Phil Salt and Chris Jordan. Wood has been consistently the quickest bowler in the tournament. They had both suffered injuries during England’s final Super 12s game – their four-wicket win over Sri Lanka in SydneyRelated

Tactics board: Babar vs Rashid, Moeen vs Shadab and a host of unknowns

The beginning of the Buttler era

“Malan and Wood are definitely struggling,” Mott had said on Friday. “We’ll keep an open mind. But there’s a short turnaround between games, with a travel day and then straight into it with one training session. There isn’t a lot of time for them.”I would like to maintain a bit of hope them. It is disappointing. They have been two great players for us, particularly over the last month. They are big losses.”But it is a real risk taking injured players into big games and I think you can really regret that, particularly when you’ve got players that can come in and do a good job. Sometimes you gamble when you don’t have that depth, but when you’ve got players that are capable of doing a role, I think it makes the decision a lot easier. Everything would have to go right for them to be available at the moment.”Wood’s injury was initially described as muscle stiffness by the England camp but he revealed on his podcast that he had strained his hip flexor four balls into his first over against Sri Lanka.”Ultimately, I managed to get through two balls at the end of that over and thought if I could get through those two balls, my adrenaline was obviously going,” he said. “I managed to get through another two overs at the back end of the innings.”The next day I’d had time to cool down and the adrenaline had worn off, and I had a bit of a right hip issue. I’ve been for a scan and things and had a look at it and tried my best to make it for the last game but I just couldn’t bowl at the speeds or intensity required to play for England. I just couldn’t get my hip going.”Hopefully, if required, I can try and get it right for this game [the final]. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to. The team did really well last game but if the captain desperately needs me and I’m fit enough then I’ll put my name in the hat like everybody else.”England’s management may be reluctant for Wood to risk aggravating his injury before their Test series in Pakistan next month but he insisted his only focus is on Sunday’s final. “Yes, that [tour] is important, but I’m honestly not looking past this,” he said. “I want the team and everybody to be successful here and we played fantastically well in the last game. It was just a bit of a scramble for myself where I was trying to see if I could get to the level required and I just couldn’t get to it.”

Saved by James & Solomon: Farke must axe Leeds dud who lost possession 15x

Leeds United dominated once again in the Championship last night, beating Watford 4-0 at Vicarage Road – subsequently moving five points clear at the top of the table.

The result extended Daniel Farke’s 14-game unbeaten run in the league, with their last defeat coming against Blackburn Rovers way back on the 30th of November last year.

Should the German and his players sustain such an impressive run of form, there’s no denying that a return to the Premier League is on the cards, ending their two-year stint in the second tier.

The Whites’ outing in the capital was a professional display, restricting the Hornets to just two shots on target, whilst taking full advantage of the opportunities that fell their way in the final third.

Numerous players starred once again during the mammoth victory, playing a huge role in their success and undoubtedly nailing down their role as a regular starter.

Leeds’ star performers against Watford

Junior Firpo has slotted straight back into the starting eleven after his recent injury troubles, returning to the side as if he had never been away given his form over the last couple of matches.

The left-back has started each of the last three Championship outings, having an immediate impact at both ends of the pitch – highlighting his quality as a result.

The 28-year-old has registered four assists and contributed to three consecutive clean sheets, with the club desperately needing to tie him to a new contract with his deal set to expire in just a few months.

Fellow full-back Jayden Bogle has been a superb addition to the side after his £5m transfer from Sheffield United during the summer transfer window.

He’s already registered four goals and two assists despite his defensive role, but whilst he failed to add any contributions last night, he starred at the back, winning two tackles and eight duels – the most of any player on the pitch.

However, the same can’t be said for one player who was disappointed once more despite boss Farke demonstrating continued faith in the first team member after his recent lack of impact.

The Leeds player who lost possession 14x against Watford

After walking away 4-0 victors in the capital last night, it may seem harsh to single out any player for their lack of impact, but ultimately, one first-team player failed to have a huge impact on the full-time scoreline.

Daniel James, Joel Piroe and Manor Solomon all registered two goal contributions each against the Hornets, highlighting their attacking threat and undoubtedly having a huge say in the club’s promotion push.

However, the same can’t be said for attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson, who failed to register a goal and assist – the only attacker not to do so in the convincing triumph.

He’s now only registered one goal contribution in 2025, with the aforementioned trio all doubling his tally in the clash against Tom Cleverley’s men on Tuesday night.

There’s no denying that the American international works hard, but it’s evident that he lacks the quality needed within the final third to match the numbers produced by those around him.

The 24-year-old only won four of the 12 duels he entered, and only managed to register one shot during the entirety of the contest, with Aaronson the only attacker to feature for 90 minutes.

He also lost possession 15 times, showcasing his wasteful nature, getting dribbled past four times and looking ineffective throughout, with Farke desperately needing to take action.

His run of form in recent weeks has been disappointing to say the least, failing to meet the expectations many would expect him to provide being a £25m player in the Championship.

If he is to recapture the form that can help the club in their battle to return to the Premier League, the German needs to take him out of the firing line, potentially handing an opportunity to another player to stake their claim for a starting role.
