Luke Procter, Ryan Rickelton dig in to secure Northants draw

Centurions overcome early Kerrigan wickets to guard against any final-day dramas

Luke Procter posted a superb 144 not out, his highest first-class score, as Northamptonshire batted out a draw on the final day of this LV= Insurance County Championship match at Wantage Road.Procter and Ryan Rickelton, who also scored a century, shared a record third-wicket stand for Northamptonshire against Warwickshire of 226 in 51 overs. It was Procter’s third Championship ton of the season, while South African international Rickelton’s 103 came while making his debut in county cricket.Their stand followed a dramatic start to the day. Simon Kerrigan mopped up Warwickshire’s tail with two wickets in just 10 deliveries to give Northamptonshire a 46-run advantage on first innings. The hosts then lost both openers inside four overs to offer the visitors a glimmer of hope. From there though Procter and Rickelton booked in for the afternoon to put any chance of an upset out of the equation. In total Procter hit 19 fours and three sixes in a four-hour stay at the crease (204 balls).Kerrigan was in the groove immediately in the morning, trapping Craig Miles leg before and having Oliver Hannon-Dalby caught behind as Warwickshire closed on 405.In reply, Northamptonshire skipper Ricardo Vasconcelos fell in the first over, caught behind off Hannon-Dalby. Shortly afterwards Emilio Gay followed in similar fashion off Nathan McAndrew to leave the Steelbacks 10 for two in the fourth over.Rickelton had a scare early in his innings when he edged Nathan McAndrew just in front of second slip. But from there he and Procter looked to be positive throughout the morning session. Procter was in a belligerent mood, pulling disdainfully off both McAndrew and Hannon-Dalby and driving sweetly through the covers.Rickelton’s first boundary came when he lent into a lovely cover drive off McAndrew but he targeted teenage left-arm spinner Jacob Bethell too, stepping down the wicket to smash him over long-on for six and reverse sweeping and cover driving for fours.Procter reached his half-century soon after the lunch break, and unfurled some serene drives and cut shots as he got back into his work.Bethell, playing only his third first-class game, obtained plenty of turn and bounce and posed questions for the Northamptonshire batters. He was taken out of the attack though when Procter took advantage of a long hop and a full toss and dispatched both for six.Racing through the nineties, Procter struck Lamb over deep midwicket for another maximum before running three to reach his ton off 126 balls..Rickelton too began in aggressive fashion after lunch, taking five boundaries off Henry Brookes’ first two overs. He went past 50 with a sumptuous drive down the ground and clubbed Matt Lamb for four more in the same direction. He reached his century with two streaky shots off the outside edge before pulling a short ball from Lamb into the hands of deep midwicket. He had faced 167 deliveries and struck 18 boundaries and one maximum.Rob Keogh joined Procter with the score 236 for three and the pair safely negotiated the remaining overs before tea. After the interval Warwickshire turned to their part-time bowlers including the rarely seen medium pace of keeper Michael Burgess who claimed his maiden first-class wicket when Keogh chased a wide one and edged to Miles who was standing in as keeper. There were no further surprises though as Procter and Josh Cobb batted out the remaining overs before the players shook hands on a draw.

Sky Sports: Sheffield United reach "full verbal agreement" with defender

Sheffield United have now reached a “full verbal agreement” with a “brilliant” defender, with negotiations over the deal expected to start soon, according to a report.

Blades vying for promotion

The Blades remain in a fantastic position to secure an instant return to the Premier League, sitting just one point off top spot in the Championship standings.

In order to boost his side’s chances of automatic promotion, however, Chris Wilder has been extremely active in the transfer market this month, most recently re-signing Southampton striker Ben Brereton Diaz.

Wilder has also confirmed his interest in signing Sheffield Wednesday loanee Shea Charles, in what would be an eyebrow-raising move, saying:

“He (Charles) is a player we identified in the summer, as we have to because we’re all doing their jobs, whether that’s us or Sheffield Wednesday. That wasn’t a wind-up, even though I get it and people thought it might have.

“We’re looking for players of quality and pedigree and he was on the list. We’ll see where we go in the next week but a combative central midfielder, who can get about the park and break the game up and play, is on our radar. And there are a lot of players who fit that bill.”

Wilder's next Egan: Sheffield United make enquiry to sign "immense" star

Chris Wilder might now be looking for some new defensive additions at Sheffield United.

ByKelan Sarson Jan 20, 2025

Not only are United looking to strengthen their attack and midfield, but there could also be another defensive arrival very soon, with Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg revealing they have reached a “full verbal agreement” with Jonjoe Kenny.

The Hertha BSC full-back has informed the German club he wants to leave this month, ahead of his contract expiring at the end of the season, and negotiations are expected to start soon.

The 27-year-old is keen on moving back to England and helping the Blades secure promotion back to the Premier League in the second half of the season.

Kenny impressing in Germany

The former Everton man has been particularly impressive in an attacking sense for Hertha BSC this season, picking up one goal and six assists in 18 2. Bundesliga outings, having predominantly featured at right-back.

Ex-Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell lauded the right-back as “brilliant” during his time at the Brick Community Stadium, and he has been one of Hertha’s best performers in the league this season, averaging a WhoScored match rating of 7.02, the third-highest in the squad.

As such, it is promising news that Kenny is keen on a move to Bramall Lane this month, and the Blades will be hoping to get a deal done for a relatively low fee, considering he is out of contract at the end of the season.

That said, it may be difficult to displace Alfie Gilchrist in the starting XI to begin with, considering the 21-year-old has made the right-back spot his own after putting in some impressive performances this season, featuring in 26 Championship games.

Rashid's all-round effort, Najibullah's fifty set up series decider

The duo lifted Afghanistan from 76 for 5 to set a stiff target for Ireland in a rain-hit match

11 overs A 50-run partnership off 18 balls between Najibullah Zadran and Rashid Khan followed by a collective bowling effort helped Afghanistan level the series 2-2, in a rain-reduced 11-over shootout in Belfast. The decider is set to take place on August 17.After rain delayed the start by two hours, Najibullah and Rashid lifted Afghanistan from 76 for 5 to 132 for 6. Ireland then fumbled in the chase and were bowled out for 105, with left-arm quick Fareed Ahmad taking three wickets and Rashid and Naveen-ul-Haq picking up two apiece.Afghanistan’s strong start
Afghanistan got the start they wanted thanks to Rahmanullah Gurbaz once again. He took Josh Little for two fours and a six in the first over and followed it with a four and a six off Mark Adair in the second over to take Afghanistan to 28 in two overs, by the end of which his partner Hazratullah Zazai had faced just one ball.Ireland continued to hit the hard lengths just like they had done in the previous game and the ploy got them their first wicket: Gurbaz’s attempt to pull a short-of-a-length ball resulted in a catch at short fine leg in the third over. Afghanistan stumbled further when legspinner Gareth Delany struck in the first two balls of the fourth over to remove Ibrahim Zadran and Zazai, giving away just six runs in the over.Najibullah, Rashid tee off
Najibullah was coming into the game on the back of a match-winning 42 off 18 balls in the third T20I. In the fourth, he was fluent from the get-go, cutting his first ball through backward point for four. The short ball, however, continued to bring the wickets for Ireland: Fionn Hand’s slower short ball had Mohammad Nabi caught at cover in the fifth over, while Delany’s short ball had Azmatullah Omarzai caught at deep midwicket off a pull in the eighth over, for his third wicket.Najibullah then repaired the innings and took his chances too against the bowlers. However, it was Rashid’s entry that turned the tide for Afghanistan. After hitting Barry McCarthy for 20 runs in the ninth over, the duo took Delany – whose figures read 2-0-12-3 until then – for 21 runs in the following over. Afghanistan also capitalised on Ireland’s sloppiness in the field – Najibullah was dropped twice and Rashid once.Najibullah raised a 22-ball half-century and the fifty stand with one blow. Adair then removed Najibullah in the final over of the innings, but the damage was done by then. Rashid hit a four off the last ball to take the tally to 53 off the last three overs. His strike rate of 310 is the joint-highest (minimum 25 runs) by an Afghanistan batter in T20Is.Ireland lose the plot
Ireland required 12 an over to seal the series. And it looked like the experienced Paul Stirling and Andy Balbirnie were determined to hunt down the target as they struck 28 runs off the first nine balls of the chase. But the fun was short-lived for Ireland. After hitting Omarzai for 4, 4, 6 in the first three balls of the second over, Balbirnie was caught at backward point and Ireland’s slide started.Fareed, playing his first T20I in 17 months, made sure Afghanistan did not miss Fazalhaq Farooqi – who has been ruled out of the rest of the series with a side strain – much on the day. He took two wickets in his first over, first nabbing Stirling with a short ball and then getting Lorcan Tucker to hole out with a fuller delivery. In his next over, Fareed also dismissed Harry Tector, leaving Ireland at 63 for 4 in six overs.Rashid finally struck in the series after going wicketless in the first three games; before this series, he had never gone wicketless in two successive T20Is. He first flummoxed Delany with a wrong’un in the seventh over and removed McCarthy in the ninth with a length delivery which the batter hit straight to long-off. When Naveen struck twice in two balls in the eighth over, Ireland were reeling at 69 for 7. Dockrell briefly marshalled the tail, scoring an unbeaten 41 off 27 balls, but the target was well beyond Ireland’s reach.

However, they are reportedly trying to add another attacking player to the squad on deadline day.

Man United target late attacking addition

According to a report from Nathan Salt of The Mail, INEOS are still looking to bring Bayern Munich star Mathys Tel to the club. The journalist reported that the deal remains on ‘despite the deal stalling overnight’, with talks ‘continuing’ regarding a potential late swoop.

Mathys Tel

The type of deal that could be struck is currently unclear. The Red Devils reportedly wanted a loan, but the Bundesliga side instead wanted a permanent deal, or at least a temporary move with a buy clause, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

Why Tel would be a good signing

It has been a slow season for Tel in 2024/25, hence his desire to leave the Allianz Arena. Under Vincent Kompany, he has managed just eight games across all competitions, a total of just 458 minutes – which is equivalent to just five full 90-minute games.

Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel

However, last season, in 2023/24, the 19-year-old really showed what he can do. The Frenchman once again struggled for regular starts, playing just 1406 minutes, equal to 16 full 90-minute games.

However, he managed to score ten times and grab six assists across competitions, averaging a goal involvement per game. As football talent scout Jacek Kulig explained, he is a “very special” footballer.

If Tel was to join the Red Devils on transfer deadline day, he could be the second coming of Anthony Martial. There are certainly similarities between the two players, not least because they are both talented French attackers who would be making the move to Old Trafford on deadline day at 19 years of age.

Man United's Anthony Martial

Martial was sensational in his first season at United, where he scored 17 goals and grabbed eight assists in 49 appearances, helping his side to win the FA Cup, scoring the winner in the semi-final against Everton.

Aside from the French links between the pair, you can also see some comparisons between Tel’s Sofascore statistics last season, and the numbers Martial put up in his first campaign at Old Trafford in 2015/16, courtesy of Sofascore.

For example, they both have a good conversion rate, with Tel averaging 16% and the former United number nine averaging slightly more, at 19%. They are also both chance-creation specialists, with the Bayern star creating six big chances last season compared to Martial’s eight big chances during his first campaign in that famous Red shirt.

If this is to be a deal that United get over the line today, they will certainly be hoping Tel can have a similar impact as Martial in his first year and beyond. Of course, injuries affected the former Monaco star, but he was simply unstoppable when fully fit, as the early stats show.

This could be a fantastic attacking addition for INEOS and United, to bolster their options and help them climb the Premier League table.

Tom Prest's decision to snub the Hundred pays off for him and for Hampshire

19-year-old has impressed in 50-over cricket after committing to the Royal London Cup

Tom Prest put his personal development over the glitz and glamour of the Hundred and the decision has already paid dividends for him and Hampshire.Prest didn’t put his name in the hat for the Hundred draft earlier this year despite his stock being sky-high after an impressive breakthrough 2021 and his exploits captaining England to the Under-19 World Cup final during the winter.Rehan Ahmed and Jacob Bethell, two of his team-mates from that tournament, both picked up lucrative Hundred contracts, suggesting Prest would have stood a good chance of a deal.Related

Prest's stunning 181 propels Hampshire to club-record List A total

Prest half-century carries Hampshire to final

Instead of risking a month of carrying drinks and sitting on the periphery, the 19-year-old committed himself to Hampshire’s Royal London Cup campaign. It has seen him score 402 runs, including a blistering 181 against Kent, to lead Hampshire’s run-scoring on their march to the semi-finals.”I felt, being 19, that there is a lot of time,” said Prest when explaining his rationale for leaving himself out the Hundred and the potential for at least a £30,000 contract. “I didn’t want to get caught up in all that stuff coming out of the Under-19 World Cup. I just wanted to play for Hampshire as much as I could this year and gain the experience of playing.”There was no guarantee that I would have been picked up, but hypothetically, if I had, then I probably wouldn’t have started in the team. It would be a great experience playing in the Hundred or even being a part of the squad because you can pick so many great players’ and coaches’ brains.”But I just wanted to be playing at the moment and we have done very well as a side. Personally, it has also gone quite well.”It might have been naïve to have turned down a potential opportunity, but if my career goes the way that I want it to, then there should be more opportunities in the future for franchise cricket when I am more ready for them. Hopefully, I’ll also be a better player for it.”Hampshire are pushing hard for the domestic treble•Getty Images

Prest sprung to attention last year when he struck a triple century for the Second XI on the same day he sat his Geography A-Level exam. That summer saw him make his professional debuts in all three formats, but it was during this season’s Vitality Blast where he scored three fifties on course to a winner’s medal that has turned him into a crucial member of Hampshire’s squad.”Having the experience of last year of playing in the T20s and then the 50-over stuff was a great learning experience,” he said. “Coming back into the county season after my winter with England Under-19s has been good and I’ve been really pleased with how it has gone.”To do what I have done this year and get a few good scores has been very good for my confidence. It has been pleasing to give the club something back after putting confidence in me.”Prest has made himself an automatic pick in both white-ball formats but still harbours strong ambitions to be a part of Hampshire’s LV= Insurance County Championship side. The only problem is finding a position in a team which is currently second in Division One.Prest, who can open or bat in the middle order and adds some useful offspin, said: “We have been competing for the Championship this season and so it is obviously going to be one of the hardest teams to get into.”It is a good challenge to get into that team over the next few years. I would be really proud of that and something I am really looking forward to trying to do soon.”Hampshire – who only lost one group stage game – face Kent at the Ageas Bowl on Tuesday and Prest is hoping to pass on his big-game know-how to his less-experienced team-mates.Prest has been involved in two Vitality Blast Finals Days – one semi-final defeat, one victory – as well as being pivotal to getting Hampshire over the line in close games already during the Royal London Cup.Prest captained England at the Under-19 World Cup•ICC via Getty Images

“The two Finals Days I’ve been at couldn’t have gone any different,” said Prest. “Losing in the semi in 2021 and then to win the competition this year means I’ve seen both sides of it and that can only help.”One of the big things said before those Finals Days and the quarter-finals was not to try to do anything extraordinary, just do ordinary things very well. That resonated a lot with me. “We’ve had a lot of close games this summer and that is only going to hold us in good stead for the semi-final and hopefully the final.”It is a great feeling around the club at the moment. We won 13 games on the bounce before losing to Glamorgan but then bounced back to win the last two to top the group.”That kind of shows the good space we are in as a club and how confident everyone is. Everyone talks about how winning becomes a habit and for us that has gone through to three different formats.”

Players' union will back those who opt out of sponsored match award

The ICC’s new deal with Aramco has brought the issue of sports sponsorship to the World Cup

Cricket’s international players’ union will back any player who opts out of a sponsor engagement at the men’s T20 World Cup amid questions over the ICC’s player-of-the-match award. The issue of association between players and sponsors has risen to the fore in recent days, following Pat Cummins’s withdrawal from Alinta Energy ads and Netball Australia’s Hancock Prospecting deal. The ICC has also announced Saudi Arabian state-owned oil company Aramco as a global partner and sponsor of player-of-the-match awards in World Cups, beginning with the men’s T20 event in Australia. This has been met with some opposition given question marks over environmental sustainability and the Saudi government’s human rights record. It’s believed the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) were consulted before the sponsorship announcement, but will back any player to express their views on it.”Our focus at present is on agreeing the foundations of the relationship between players collectively and the ICC at a global level,” FICA CEO Tom Moffat said. “That’s including on the various global employment and regulatory issues that impact players and ensure cricket aligns with the global best practice.”Part of our proposal includes a framework for dialogue on how cricket approaches human rights responsibilities. In the meantime if individual players do not want to be associated with a particular sponsor, we would support that.”Aramco is also a sponsor of the player-of-the-match award in the IPL, where several prominent players have accepted cheques with the company’s name on it.However there is a feeling the events of recent days, as well as the current spotlight on Aramco’s sponsorship, will prompt players to be more aware of individual sponsors’ backgrounds.AAP has also been told that the ICC will not sanction players sitting out player-of-the-match award presentations if it went against their own beliefs.ICC practice however dictates that beside an on-screen graphic and fan vote, there is no sponsor logo or name on the physical award.Australia spinner Adam Zampa, who is one of cricket’s most progressive players through his vegan lifestyle, steered clear of saying if he would accept an Aramco award this World Cup when asked on Tuesday.”It’s a good question…we don’t live in a perfect world,” Zampa said. “The fact there is some conversations starting about it already [is good], but it’s going to be a steep learning curve for everyone.”Regardless, he said Cummins’ positioning had represented a step forward for the sport and the players’ desire to act as role models while balancing financials.”There has to be a collaborative approach between players, CA and sponsors,” he said. “I have obviously got some personal views about some sponsors we have at the moment, but the fact Pat has started that conversation is great.”The Aramco situation is likely to remain an issue at next year’s women’s T20 World Cup, while the sponsorship lasts until after the 2023 men’s 50-over tournament. The ICC claim they can attempt to drive change through sponsorship partnerships and their own steps towards sustainability in cricket.Saudi Arabia fielded their first women’s cricket team in five T20s earlier this year, while the ICC has assisted in setting up female participation programs.
