Can Rajasthan Royals deliver knockout punch to Mumbai Indians?

Rohit Sharma’s team aren’t guaranteed a playoffs spot even if they win both their remaining games

Shashank Kishore04-Oct-20212:08

Should Mumbai stick with Jayant Yadav? Should Royals try out Tabraiz Shamsi?

Big PictureRohit Sharma wants the Mumbai Indians to be free and fearless. At the stage they are at, they may as well be, because even two wins can’t guarantee an automatic playoffs berth because their net run rate is quite poor. They can take a cue from their opponents, the Rajasthan Royals, who exhibited these virtues in making a mockery of a chase of 190 against the Chennai Super Kings two nights ago.Unlike Mumbai, the Royals are better placed simply because they can control their own fate. Wins in both their games will take them to 14 points; it will be good enough to secure qualification because it will mean neither Mumbai nor the Kolkata Knight Riders can force a three-way shootout on points.Mumbai haven’t been helped by their key batters going off the boil. Rohit Sharma is yet to hit top hear in the UAE leg, Quinton de Kock has wasted starts barring the one half-century, Suryakumar Yadav seems a pale version of his IPL 2020 avatar, and Ishan Kishan, another standout performer during their title-winning run last year, now can’t even find a place in their XI.Cricket on ESPN+

This has meant Kieron Pollard hasn’t been able to intimidate oppositions in his usual manner because he’s mostly walking in to avert a collapse. It’s arguable, meanwhile, that Hardik Pandya’s batting prowess hasn’t been fully utilised, especially considering that is his only role in the team currently. Should Mumbai try shake things up and give him the license to go big much earlier than he usually would? The Royals shredded their go-cautious template in some style against the Super Kings, well aware that wins and only wins can keep them in the reckoning. This approach has been evident in the UAE leg, where their new opening pair of Evin Lewis and Yashasvi Jaiswal have put on 225 runs in five innings at 10.54 per over. During the India leg, the Royals tried out three opening pairs, who together put on 161 runs in seven innings at a modest 6.85 per over.Another reason the Royals are still in the reckoning is Sanju Samson’s form. Far too often, Samson has hit rough patches after starting tournaments well. Here, he is 20 short of 500 runs and is among the leading run-getters this season. And while compiling his most prolific IPL season yet, he’s scored his runs at a strike rate of nearly 140. Does he have two more big knocks in him to help take his side through?Qualification chancesIf Royals beat Mumbai, they will join Knight Riders on 12 points, and the Royals-Knight Riders game on Thursday will then be a shootout to decide fourth place – the winner will qualify and the loser will be out.If Mumbai beat Royals, then Mumbai’s chances of qualification will obviously improve. They will qualify for sure if they beat Sunrisers in their last game, and if Royals beat Knight Riders. However, if Knight Riders beat Royals, Mumbai will almost certainly be knocked out because of their poor net run rate.If Mumbai beat Royals but lose to Sunrisers, and if Royals beat Knight Riders, then three teams will be tied on 12. Punjab Kings would join them too if they beat Chennai Super Kings. In that case, again, Knight Riders’ superior NRR should see them through.Yashasvi Jaiswal is coming off a 21-ball half-century against Chennai Super Kings•BCCI

Likely XIsMumbai Indians: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Saurabh Tiwary, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Krunal Pandya/Nathan Coulter-Nile, 8 Jayant Yadav, 9 Rahul Chahar, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Trent BoultRajasthan Royals: 1 Evin Lewis, 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Sanju Samson (capt & wk), 4 Shivam Dube, 5 Glenn Phillips, 6 David Miller, 7 Rahul Tewatia, 8 Akash Singh/Jaydev Unadkat, 9 Mayank Markande, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Chetan SakariyaStrategy punt Evin Lewis has been in prolific form, with a strike rate of 189.65 in the powerplay, the best among all batters with over 100 runs in that phase this season. However, Lewis has been out twice while trying to pull the short ball. Can Mumbai use Jasprit Bumrah’s pace for two overs inside the powerplay to try and rattle him? Trent Boult has taken 18 powerplay wickets for Mumbai in the UAE, and 15 of them have come in matches they have won. Of the nine matches in which he’s failed to strike in the powerplay, however, Mumbai have won only three. So while Lewis and Jaiswal have gained plenty of success with an aggressive approach, they might want to show a little more caution against Boult.Stats that matter Barring Rohit and de Kock, no Mumbai batter has crossed the 250-run mark for the season. All their batters, meanwhile, have combined to pass 50 only six times, with only de Kock doing so more than once. Krunal Pandya has only picked up five wickets so far in 11 innings, which is his lowest tally for any IPL season. His economy rate of 7.74 is also his worst in any season. Since the IPL’s resumption in the UAE, the Royals have scored at 8.8 runs an over inside the Powerplay, and also average 44 in the phase. No team has scored quicker than them in this phase. Royals have also found the boundary every 4.4 balls in this phase in the UAE, and no team has bettered that.

Aston Villa and NSWE set to bid for £150,000-a-year La Liga ace in January

Aston Villa are among the Premier League teams interested in signing a £150,000-a-year La Liga ace, according to a recent report. The Midlands side were very busy during the summer, as Unai Emery put together a squad capable of competing both domestically and in Europe, but they already have their eye on fresh additions for the New Year.

£15m Aston Villa target considering leaving Boca Juniors in 2025 transfer

Villa are considering making a move for a player who is happy to leave his current club.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 30, 2024 Aston Villa transfer news

The January transfer window is still a bit away, but NSWE, Monchi and his recruitment team at Villa look to be getting their plans in place for what could be a busy January. It has been revealed that Monchi has sent scouts from Villa to watch young French defender Nathan Zeze, as they look to make a move in 2025.

But while they look at potentially strengthening their backline, Villa are also interested in signing Alex Baena. The Villarreal winger is known to Emery already, as the pair worked together at the Spanish side, and he could now be pushing Villa to bring him to England. However, it isn’t considered an easy deal to complete, as they face competition from Newcastle United, and Villarreal will not let him leave on the cheap, as he’s got a £50 million release clause.

The Villans are also leading the race to sign Boca Juniors’ Kevin Zenon, as his performances in Argentina have impressed the Midlands side, as well as Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle. But the transfer stories don’t stop there for Villa and Emery, as they are also pushing to sign another player from Spain, this time a 21-year-old.

Aston Villa set to bid hard for £150k-a-year ace in January

According to reports from Spain relayed by Sport Witness, Aston Villa are interested in signing Getafe’s Christantus Uche. The attacking midfielder joined the La Liga side in July, and his performances have already caught the eye of Newcastle and AFC Bournemouth, as well as Villa.

Uche, who earns €180,000 a year, which is roughly £150,000, started his career at Campos FA in Nigeria, but in 2022 he was picked up by Moralo B. The 21-year-old stayed with them until July 2023, when he joined AD Ceuta, playing 36 times for them in all competitions.

The report states that Villa, as well as Newcastle and Bournemouth, are all in “pole position” to sign the midfielder, who has been deployed as a striker at times this season. Uche is under contract at Getafe until the summer of 2028, and they have an option to extend that by another 12 months.

But despite him having four years left on his contract, his time at the La Liga side seems to be coming to an end, given the interest from the Premier League. It adds that Villa and these other English teams will be “bidding hard” for Uche in January, as they all look to strengthen their team in the winter transfer window.

Questions on and off the field for South Africa as busy summer kicks off against Netherlands

Netherlands have their own points to prove against the “big boys”, with the ODI Super League being scrapped going forward

Firdose Moonda25-Nov-2021

You may expect the usual David and Goliath angle for a preview about a series between South Africa and Netherlands but this won’t exactly be it. You only have to go back a little over four months for the last time a so-called David beat South Africa’s Goliath, when Ireland registered their first ODI win over them and took what could-yet be 10 crucial points off them in the World Cup Super League. The series was shared and South Africa were shaken, even if circumstances at the time suggest that Ireland’s victory was an anomaly. It came at the height of South Africa’s third wave of coronavirus and players on tour had family and friends who were ill at home. It also came during an incident since described as an insurrection in South Africa, characterised by riots and looting in the provinces of Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal, where a significant number of the national squad are based. It’s fair to say that South Africa’s minds were elsewhere. They went to lose an ODI series in Sri Lanka, but since that defeat they have won all but one of their matches, the T20 World Cup opener against Australia, so the wheel appears to be turning. But how far? This summer might tell. This week marked the start of the fourth wave of the pandemic in South Africa, with a three-fold increase in the seven-day rolling averages of positive cases, the bulk of them in the Gauteng province where this series is being played. One of those cases was Lungi Ngidi, who has been withdrawn from the squad thereby depriving South Africa of their senior-most seamer for the ODIs against the Dutch. Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje are being rested and with Ngidi now out, it will be up to a three-time ODI capped Daryn Dupavillon, twice-capped Junior Dala and uncapped Sisanda Magala to lead the attack. Happily, for South Africa, they also have three seam-bowling allrounders in their ranks. Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo and Wayne Parnell will all add experience to a green pace pack.Though the civil unrest was short lived, South Africa remains far from stable with rolling blackouts at their worst in 2021 and the economy in freefall, and cricket has not escaped the crunch. Money is still tight at Cricket South Africa and that’s not the only shadow hanging over the administration. The Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) project will reach its conclusion as the season starts with the transformation ombudsman, Dumisa Ntsebeza, set to release his report on November 30, the day before the final ODI against the Dutch. It is expected to contain recommendations that could directly impact the national team. Head coach Mark Boucher was among those who was implicated in testimony detailing racism, and responded with an affidavit admitting to naivety and apologising for his past conduct. His assistant, Enoch Nkwe, resigned in the midst of these events, citing problems with the team culture without going into any further details. Nkwe may yet be courted by Netherlands, where he was previously assistant coach, and where he has family. But out of all that, South Africa have emerged, finally, with clarity on their anti-racism gesture. Less than 48 hours before the first international delivery of the summer is bowled, CSA released a statement confirming that the team will take a knee throughout the season. “The Proteas should continue to take the knee as a contribution towards the global sports endeavour to demonstrate its commitment to eradicating racism and all forms of discrimination,” CSA said.Considering that South Africa previously had a three-pronged approach to showing anti-racism (take a knee, raise a fist or stand to attention) and that several players only took a knee when it was mandated by the board (and one, Quinton de Kock only after sitting out a game for refusing to accept the instruction at first), there will still be questions about whether South African cricket is inclusive enough or representative enough. Addressing these questions remains an ongoing process, but there will be plenty of on-field tests as well in a busy summer ahead.Lined up are ODI series against Netherlands, India and Bangladesh – which will collectively go a long way to determining their chances of automatic qualification for the 2023 World Cup – and Tests against India, New Zealand and Bangladesh. The T20 format takes a backseat, with only four fixtures against India but, all in all, it’s a full schedule that could prove crucial for Boucher’s longevity as head coach and several players’ careers.Netherlands can only dream of a sentence like that being written about them. As the only Associate in the World Cup Super League, they are relishing their opportunity to play against the big teams but it will be shortlived. The scrapping of the league and return to a one-off qualifier event for the 2027 World Cup has created uncertainty among Associates, who fear their chances to test themselves against the best will be severely reduced. In the long-term, Dutch coach Ryan Campbell believes it could shrink the game; in the short-term, it gives a team like Netherlands even more incentive to make statements where they can, especially against a side like South Africa, where many of their players started their careers.Related

Ryan Campbell: Every Associate is wondering what next?

Ngidi tests positive for Covid-19, to miss Netherlands ODIs

The Netherlands squad includes a former South African international, Roelof van der Merwe, three former provincial players, Colin Ackermann, Stephan Myburgh and Brandon Glover, and an uncapped South Africa-born player, Clayton Floyd. Their mentor – and greatest player to date – Ryan ten Doeschate is also South African, so the connection between the two countries from a cricketing perspective is strong. And then there’s the added niggle. Expats have historically been fan favourites for some actual banter (not the kind that has been talked about in the English circuit over the last few weeks) and for the first time since the pandemic began, there will be a cricket crowd in a South African stadium. Current government regulations allow for a maximum of 2,000 fully vaccinated spectators at sports events but Cricket South Africa has petitioned for this to increase to 10% of stadium capacity. ESPNcricinfo understands that this request will be granted but that it needs to be published in the national gazette and that may only happen in time for the Test series against India. So it may be a small crowd for this series, but certainly a vocal one, albeit sans minors. Children under 12, to whom the Covid-19 vaccine is not yet available in South Africa, will not be allowed to attend matches and there’s another hard sell: no alcohol is allowed to be sold at sporting venues. The absence of a party atmosphere will not take away from this series, marking the start of the festive season in some way. Pandemic-weary South Africans are looking forward to a more “normal” December-January after last year’s holiday lockdown, and having international cricket will be one way of enjoying summer. Despite six regulars – big names like captain Temba Bavuma, de Kock, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje – being given a break from the biobubble for these matches, there are enough eye-catchers to keep people interested. Janneman Malan, David Miller, Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj have all put in standout performances over the past year and more will be expected this summer. And if the start of it, a three-match ODI series against Netherlands, doesn’t seem like an enticing match-up for you, just think back to July and that match against Ireland.

Spurs want to sign big-money Maddison replacement who’s like Bellingham

Tottenham continue to puzzle us. Tottenham continue to frustrate. That’s always the way, isn’t it?

However, under Ange Postecoglou there has been a flirtation with improvement. No one can deny that Spurs play exciting football but their results have been far from consistent, chiefly in 2024/25.

At times, the north Londoners have looked like world beaters. They beat Manchester City and Aston Villa in the same week, only to taste defeat against Galatasaray and then even more worryingly against Ipswich Town.

The Tractor Boys and Crystal Palace picked up their first wins of the campaign against Spurs which has ruined any progress Postecoglou had achieved in the opening weeks of the season.

Pressure is mounting and it will continue to do so the longer Spurs don’t look as though Champions League football will be inbound.

As much as Brennan Johnson has played like a man possessed this term, scoring seven goals, and Heung-min Son’s return to fitness will be a game-changer, there have been some notable underperformers who aren’t helping matters.

Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson

One of those is £40m man James Maddison.

James Maddison's time at Spurs in numbers

The arrival of Maddison in the summer of 2023 was an exciting one. After Leicester had been relegated a whole host of top-flight clubs had taken an interest in the Englishman and understandably so.

The former Coventry man had scored ten goals and supplied nine assists in all competitions for the Foxes. Arriving at Spurs, the first few months of his time in the capital was seriously impressive.

He began the 2023/24 campaign with three goals and five assists in his opening 11 league matches before injury derailed a promising start. Since then, Maddison has struggled to replicate those performances.

The 27-year-old scored just one for the remainder of the season after returning in January and in 2024/25, has flattered to deceive.

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison

Ultimately, Spurs look better when he’s not starting. The attacking midfielder may have scored three goals this season but their 4-1 win over West Ham a few weeks ago was evidence that they may not need him to be at their best.

Maddison was withdrawn at half-time with the score 1-1 before Spurs scored three without him on the pitch. Since then, he started in the defeat to Palace and then began the games with Aston Villa and Ipswich on the bench.

The final straw for Postecoglou may well have been the loss in Turkey to Galatasaray where Football.London reporter Alasdair Gold handed him a 4/10 match rating and wrote that it ‘wasn’t the performance to show that he should be starting’.

So, where do Spurs go from here? Potentially a replacement in the transfer market?

Spurs' potential James Maddison replacement

It remains to be seen what Tottenham’s priority in the January transfer window is but reports have already emerged suggesting that a pretty penny could be spent on the signing of a new midfielder.

That’s according to journalist Christian Falk who reported this weekend that Spurs are battling fierce rivals Arsenal for the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson. Liverpool are also showing interest and according to prior reports, he could cost in the region of £70m.

So, who is Larsson and what could he offer the Lilywhites? Well, at the moment, the 20-year-old is more of a holding midfield player, someone capable of dictating play from deep. He has registered 1.48 interceptions per 90 minutes, enough to rank him among the top 17% of positionally similar players in Europe’s top five leagues.

We know he can break up the play but what does he offer that makes him such a fine Maddison replacement? Well, as data analyst Ben Mattinson suggests, Larsson is “very similar to [Jude] Bellingham”.

Why? The youngster stands at a tall 6 foot 2 and like Bellingham, possesses rangy strides that would make him the perfect profile of player to operate as a box-to-box midfielder, someone capable of making late runs into the box to score goals.

As it happens, despite playing deeper in the Frankfurt side, the Swede is already beginning to show signs of being a player who can score goals.

He has scored as many as Maddison this term (3) and ranks highly among midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for plenty of attacking metrics.

Based on the numbers above, there is certainly a reason to believe that as Larsson grows older, he could feature quite prominently in an attacking role as Maddison has done over the last few years.

Spurs already have a number of top young players – chiefly Mikey Moore and Lucas Bergvall – but the Frankfurt ace would sit very nicely alongside them over the years to come.

Johnson axed for "special" £50m signing in dream Spurs XI after January

Ange could be tempted to ring the changes in the transfer market this winter after Spurs’ slow start.

India secure big lead on day of 18 wickets

Mohammed Shami’s five-for negates India collapse to Lungi Ngidi on full day of cricket

Sidharth Monga28-Dec-20212:47

Cullinan: Shami’s bowling reminded me of Pollock

Stumps With the whole second day lost to rain, Centurion practically made up for the time lost with the most wickets it has produced in a day of Test cricket, 18. India lost their last seven wickets in 69 balls, which is not usually considered ideal, but it was just the result they needed as it suggested the pitch had significantly more life in it than on day one. Mohammed Shami then led India’s bowling – missing Jasprit Bumrah for 49 overs because of an ankle injury – with his second first-innings five-for in Test cricket to give India a lead of 130.India now held all the keys to dominance in the Test, provided no further weather interruptions in the remaining two days. Things looked similar at the end of day one, but the washed-out second day left them needing an innings win or a transformed pitch if they were to force a result. The Centurion pitch, which usually gets quicker after the first day, responded with both pace and uneven bounce for the new ball. What resulted was the second-quickest collapse in Test cricket (where fall-of-wicket information is available) in terms of number of balls, when the first four wickets of a team had batted 90 overs or more. India’s first new ball looked just as lethal with four wickets falling in the first 13 overs before the pitch settled down enough for South Africa to recover from 32 for 4 to end up with 197.Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi caused the havoc early doors, hitting the pitch hard and drawing the inconsistent bounce. Ngidi ended with his second six-wicket bag in Centurion. Once the overnight batters, KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane fell, both to extra bounce, the approach of the rest of the batters suggested they felt safe with what they had on the board in practically a four-day Test. They probably fancied bowling out there instead of taking time out of the Test by merely surviving. There was good reason for it: after just 60 false response in the first 90 overs of the Test, 28 came about in the next 15.3 overs. India took 55 runs in those overs, and unleashed their attack. As early as the first over, Bumrah produced an unplayable delivery to send back captain Dean Elgar: a full ball that shaped in and then nipped away just enough after pitching to take the edge. In the half hour that India had before lunch, they looked to swing the ball, but didn’t find much. They came back a mean machine: repeatedly bowling the fullest length that can’t be driven, mixing in the odd lifter into the ribs.Mohammed Shami celebrates the wicket of Temba Bavuma•AFP via Getty Images

Keegan Petersen responded with an error immediately as soon as India changed the lengths. Still looking for the drive, he was well away from the pitch of the ball, which seamed back to take the inside edge and knock over his stumps. When Aiden Markram had his off stump pegged back by one that held its line, it wasn’t the first unplayable ball he was facing. This was an interrogation of the highest order. After Bumrah twisted his ankle and walked off in the 11th over, Mohammed Siraj cleverly checked Rassie van der Dussen out on the drive with two sucker balls. One edge fell short of second slip, and the second went straight to gully, a dismissal that should leave the batter disappointed. As the ball began to grow softer, it began to misbehave less, allowing Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock to build a partnership. They applied themselves well, and took toll every time India overpitched. They added 72 for the fourth wicket, the only stand of 50 or more, but this is where India’s decision to play five bowlers came in handy. The duo saw off R Ashwin’s first spell and also a Shami spell, but Shardul Thakur came back to have de Kock play on the first ball of a new spell. This was just before tea, Bumrah had come back on the field, but there were still close to two hours to go before he could bowl again. It was hard work post tea too with the ball not doing much. This is when Shami put in a spell of 4-0-19-2 to take out both Bavuma and No. 7 Wiaan Mulder. They both looked comfortable at the wicket, Bavuma even reached his half-century, but they both made errors against the impeccable accuracy of Shami. Mulder played a loose drive to a half-volley, and Bavuma defended a wide one outside the line of his head.Rabada and debutant Marco Jansen now added 37 for the eighth wicket, managing to make it look easy, but again Thakur produced the breakthrough just before Shami and Bumrah came back on. He had Jansen playing inside the line of what looked like a straight ball. Shami had Rabada for his five-for, his 200th wicket. He is the only Indian among the 11 with 200 or more with a strike-rate of under 50. Bumrah finished things off with the wicket of Keshav Maharaj, caught at fly slip.In the half hour possible before stumps, Jansen managed to get the wicket of Mayank Agarwal, with India ending the day effectively at 146 for 1. At the end of day three on such a pitch, you back yourself to win, but there is some forecast for rain on day five, which will make for an interesting watch on India’s declaration should they get themselves into a position to do so.

While acknowledging areas of improvement still needed after the India series win, coach Boucher also said the players are “growing as cricketers and human beings”

South Africa were playing more than just the opposition over the last few summers with matters coming to a head this season after their coach, Mark Boucher, was charged with gross misconduct by Cricket South Africa (CSA). Boucher received his charge sheet – which confirmed CSA will seek his dismissal – on Monday, two days ahead of the ODI series against India that South Africa swept 3-nil.Boucher’s charges relate to historic and current handlings of race issues, which have always been part of South African cricket’s narrative but became even more topical since the Black Lives Matter movement’s resurgence in sport in 2020. Since then, South Africa have appointed their first black African ODI captain, Temba Bavuma, who now outlined the difficulties of being in charge of a team that continues to face issues off the field.Related

CSA will argue in favour of dismissing Boucher at disciplinary hearing

“I don’t think it’s easy (captaining the team). There are a lot of dynamics that you need to manage. For me, the biggest thing is trying to keep cricket the main focus amongst the guys,” Bavuma said. “I hate to bring this up but it’s been a challenging period for the team, for the players, for particular members of management. There’s been a lot of scrutiny surrounding the team and surrounding the organisation, so to manage the conversations happening around the change-room and to ensure our energy is 100% geared towards performing out there, for me, has been the biggest challenge. It has been a big responsibility but has also been a privilege. But it’s not easy.”Bavuma did not name Boucher specifically and when the man himself was asked about the difficulties of coaching a team that is constantly facing off-field pressures, Boucher said: “I can’t answer that. Not now in any case.”ESPNcricinfo understands that Boucher has been advised not to discuss matters related to his disciplinary hearing as it is part of the ongoing investigation. Boucher and his legal team will meet with CSA on Wednesday to outline a timeframe for the hearing, but it is unlikely to begin before South Africa return from their two-Test tour of New Zealand, which starts on February 17. Afrikaans newspaper reported on Sunday that Boucher’s defence will be bankrolled by a group of wealthy businessmen, and though it did not name any of them, billionaire Johann Rupert, an entrepreneur, issued a tweet in support of Boucher earlier in the week.Despite what could be a rocky few months ahead for Boucher personally, he was positive about the development the team has made under his watch to beat India in both the Test and ODI series this season. “The progression has been great,” Boucher said. “We turned the corner a while ago, from a team perspective. We tried a few things in Covid times when we had to get a deeper squad and we gave a lot of opportunities to a lot of players. We are starting to reap the rewards now. It’s all falling into place, which is nice.”While acknowledging areas for improvement, such as the fielding in particular, Boucher said the ingredients in the squad could make a recipe for future success, especially because internally there’s a sense of harmony. “There are always places we can improve. I don’t think our fielding was great. But I like the look of this batting team. I like the balance. We are getting hundreds, and that’s with one or two of those guys out of form. I believe we’ve got a classy top six,” Boucher said. “And now with allrounders, we’ve got a couple that we can look at. We have an environment which is very good. The change-room is a happy change-room and the players are growing as cricketers and human beings.”South Africa will celebrate their twin successes against India, but Boucher said their feet remain “firmly on the ground”, and Bavuma, speaking from both a captaincy and batting perspective, echoed that. “It means a lot as a player. Knowing I contributed to the winning cause makes it better,” he said. “You will always be judged on your record and to convincingly beat an Indian side speaks a lot to my captaincy. But things are still early from a leadership point of view. I will take the positives but I will try very hard not to get ahead of myself.”
