Smit Patel quits BCCI system to 'carve out a second coming of sorts' in America

The first stop is the Caribbean where he’ll play in the upcoming CPL for the Barbados Tridents

Smit Patel, an Under-19 World Cup winner with India in 2012, has officially retired from all forms of cricket under the BCCI’s ambit to pursue his American dream. This also makes him eligible to play in franchise tournaments outside India, and his first stop will be the Caribbean, where he will represent the Barbados Tridents in the CPL this August.”It’s a new innings for me,” Patel told ESPNcricinfo from Arizona, where he is representing the New Jersey Blackcaps, a club side, at a weekend tournament. “It’s been a different sort of a journey. Starting with the highs of the Under-19 World Cup, then the frustration of not finding a place as a wicketkeeper and then moving four teams [Gujarat, Tripura, Goa and Baroda] within India for opportunities.”All this is bound to happen when there’s stifling competition, so I’ve got no complaints. I’m blessed to have played for India at a world event – few get that chance. So I’m moving on with happy memories. All my paperwork with the BCCI is complete. I’ve sent in my retirement letter. So the India chapter of my cricket career is over. If I return, it’ll only be to train here for a month or so every year when it’s snowing back in the US.”Related

Patel isn’t a stranger to America though. He is a green-card holder – meaning he can live and work there permanently – having spent considerable time in the country since 2010. His family had migrated from Gujarat to Pennsylvania and currently lives in Easton, where his father runs a gas station, and the plan of having a better life has worked out well.It is this security, along with a two-year Major League Cricket (MLC) contract, Patel said, that gave him the confidence to try and forge a playing career in the USA. As things stand, the league has been pushed back because of the Covid-19 pandemic and is now set to kick-off in 2023.”Yes, having played for 12 years in India, to suddenly pack up and leave can be intimidating,” he said. “But since my family was already here and they have set themselves up here, the decision was somewhat easier than just having to turn up here and look out for yourself. I’d been doing that in India for a decade now – living there to just play cricket and come back here during the off-season. I’d spent nine months of lockdown last year here, and I’ve been back here since April. Also signing up with MLC was a surety that I’m part of a system here.”Patel’s cricket career in India was at best a stop-start affair. After becoming a breakout star at the 2012 Under-19 World Cup along with Unmukt Chand, B Aparajith and Sandeep Sharma, to name a few, Patel had to contend with the frustration of being in the reserves for a better part of a few years at Gujarat, where their captain Parthiv Patel was the first-choice wicketkeeper.Smit Patel finishes his India chapter with 3278 first-class runs in 55 games at an average close to 40•PTI

This frustration of not getting a regular berth in the team then took him to Tripura for three seasons. When their new administration opted not to have Patel as a “guest player”, he moved to Goa. Ahead of the truncated 2020-21 season, he signed with Baroda, so that he could play with a “better team”.In all, Patel finished his India chapter with 3278 first-class runs in 55 games at an average close to 40, including 11 centuries and 14 half-centuries. He also featured in 43 List A matches and 28 T20s, scoring 1234 and 708 runs, respectively. Coincidentally, Patel’s final first-class and List A appearances in India came against Gujarat, his original team, in 2020 and 2021, respectively.”No doubt I’ve moved around teams, but I only did that because I didn’t want to stagnate and get opportunities wherever I could,” he said. “I didn’t get picked in the IPL either, so I had to find ways to keep the wheel turning. I’ve had good stints at all the team’s I’ve represented. Tripura and Goa were challenging because I was playing for teams wanting to prove themselves.”Patel must now spend three years in the USA – including at least nine months in a year – to become eligible to qualify for the national team. He should be eligible to play for USA “if everything goes to plan” in late 2022, by when he will be 29 with “my best years ahead of me”.Patel has already spent a bit of time at the USA national camps in Texas, under new head coach J Arun Kumar, the former Karnataka captain and coach, and Saurabh Netravalkar, the captain. Incidentally, Netravalkar, like Patel, was part of India’s Under-19 World Cup squad from 2010, alongside the likes of KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Jaydev Unadkat.”I spent a bit of time at the national camp, met JAK and the others,” Patel said. “They have been pretty welcoming of me and the decision I’ve taken to try and forge a career here. I still must score runs, perform well and do everything asked of me to get selected. Mere eligibility doesn’t guarantee anything, but I’m willing to put in the hard work and try and carve out a second coming of sorts in my career in America.”

Emery must instantly drop Aston Villa ace after 6/10 UCL display

Aston Villa’s first Champions League game since 1982/83 saw them put in a very dominant performance away to Swiss champions Young Boys. The Villans earned a commanding 3-0 victory in Switzerland, thanks to goals from Youri Tielemans, Jacob Ramsey and Amadou Onana.

Statistically, the Villans dominated the game, too. According to Sofascore, they had far more possession compared to the Swiss outfit after weathering an early storm and adapting to the plastic pitch, a tough surface to play on.

In total, Unai Emery’s side had 53% of the ball, compared to Young Boys’ 47%. Not only that, they had 20 shots to the Swiss champions’ 12 and registered seven on target, two more than their opponent.

It was unsurprisingly a dominant performance from the former European Cup winners, as they slotted seamlessly back into the biggest club competition in the continent.

The visitors can certainly be happy with their night’s work, although there was still a lot to do for goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, who put in an impressive showing against the Swiss outfit.

Emi Martinez’s stats vs Young Boys

Despite a good night’s work from his teammates, notably the three goalscorers, Martinez was tested fairly regularly and had to put in some crucial saves, particularly in the first half, in order to keep the score at 0-0. There were certainly some hairy moments for the Villans.

The Argentine World Cup winner had 54 touches of the ball and was forced into making five saves. Three of those stops came from shots inside the penalty box. The goalkeeper also completed 28 from 41 attempted passes.

It was a performance that earned Martinez a deserved 8/10 ranking from Goal journalist Richard Mills. The journalist was complimentary of his performance, explaining that the Villa number 23 was on hand to get “his team out of a couple of dangerous situations”.

The surface did not make it an easy pitch to play on for any goalkeeper, but Martinez made light worm of it. He negated a ball that could skid on unpredictably and ultimately managed to keep a clean sheet in Switzerland.

Whilst the former Arsenal goalkeeper had a good night, the same cannot be said for one Villa player, Lamar Bogarde, who had a tough evening and was substituted at half-time.

Lamar Bogarde’s stats vs Young Boys

After making two consecutive Premier League starts at right-back in the absence of the injured Matty Cash, it was a baptism of fire for 20-year-old Bogarde on Tuesday evening.

Whilst he did not make any calamitous mistakes, the youngster struggled to make an impact on the game and was subsequently replaced at the break by the more experienced Diego Carlos.

He had just 18 touches of the ball, 39 fewer than Martinez, completed eight from nine passes, and lost the ball three times. Boagrde also won just 50% of his ground duels in Switzerland, three from six in total.

His performance earned him a 6/10 rating from the aforementioned Mills, who noted that, whilst the youngster didn’t necessarily do anything wrong, “a couple of threatening Young Boys attacks happened on his side of the pitch”, suggesting they exploited his side.

Indeed, if Emery was to drop the youngster this weekend for the game against Wolves at Villa Park, there are two options as to who could replace him. The most obvious option is Carlos, who came on to replace him on Tuesday, but he could also turn to 18-year-old Serbian defender Kosta Nedeljkovic, who featured in their first three Premier League games of the season and stood out against Arsenal.

Diego Carlos for Aston Villa

It remains to be seen which route the Spaniard chooses to go down, including showing faith in Bogarde and keeping him in the side. However, he will certainly be hoping his side can continue to build on an impressive win in their first Champions League game since 1982/83.

Daniel Bell-Drummond steers Kent chase after weakened Surrey stutter

A makeshift Surrey side saw their quarter-final hopes take a hit with nine-wicket defeat

Kent Spitfires restricted Surrey to just 128 for 7 before strolling to a nine-wicket victory at the Kia Oval and strengthening their position at the top of the Vitality Blast’s South Group.Daniel Bell-Drummond went on to a 37-ball 53 not out after he and Joe Denly put on 64 in eight overs for the first wicket to set up a comfortable chase that ended with 4.3 overs to spare. Ollie Robinson also struck a breezy unbeaten 45 from 30 balls and Kent have now won eight of their 12 group matches while Surrey look unlikely to qualify for a quarter-final place.Jordan Clark managed an unbeaten 37 from 31 balls, and there were brief flurries from Jamie Overton and Tim David as 86 came from the last ten overs, but otherwise Surrey’s batsmen could not handle an impressive Kent attack on a sluggish surface. Adam Milne, the New Zealand fast bowler, was outstanding both with the new ball and in the final overs to take 2 for 13.Surrey, put in, were in trouble even before the end of thePowerplay, in which they failed to hit a single boundary while staggering to 17 for 3.Jamie Smith top-edged a pull at Milne to extra cover in the second over, Ben Geddes fell for 8 when pulling Fred Klaassen’s left-arm seam to deep midwicket and Laurie Evans departed for 6, skying Matt Milnes’ first ball to midwicket at the start of the sixth over. After nine overs Surrey had only reached 28 for 3 but then came three successive boundaries – the first of the innings – as Rory Burns first missed with a reverse swipe at Jack Leaning’s offspin, the ball running away for four byes, before connecting with two more reverse sweeps to ironic cheers from a 5000 crowd.Qais Ahmed bowled four overs of legspin for 22, although he was driven straight for six by David, and Surrey slumped further to 59 for 5 in an extraordinary 12th over.David, a big-hitting 25-year-old Australian-raised Singapore international signed for two Blast games in place of injured New Zealand paceman Kyle Jamieson, clubbed Darren Stevens for a big six before being brilliantly held by a diving Jordan Cox at long on for 20 from the next ball.Stevens found himself on a hat-trick when Burns (19) was then magnificently caught left-handed by Klaassen, flinging himself to intercept a sliced cut at short third man, but Overton defended his first ball before swinging Stevens for the first of his three sixes in the veteran allrounder’s second over.Klaassen and Denly were hit for Overton’s other sixes before he mishit a knee-high full toss from Milne to extra cover to go for 23 in the 17th over.

Liverpool chiefs racing to trigger "magic" star’s release clause for Slot

Following their excellent start under Arne Slot on the pitch, Liverpool are now reportedly racing to trigger the release clause of a South American talent ahead of the likes of Real Madrid.

Liverpool transfer news

Despite a quiet transfer window, the Liverpool side that Slot inherited from Anfield legend Jurgen Klopp has so far more than proven its worth, with the likes of Luis Diaz and Ryan Gravenberch stepping up under the Dutchman. With just one defeat in all competitions, which came in shock fashion against Nottingham Forest, the Reds, as things stand, have seamlessly transitioned into life under their new manager.

Their 5-1 mauling of West Ham United to reach the last 16 of the Carabao Cup was simply the latest example of Liverpool’s ruthless mood under Slot, even with a slightly changed side. It’s the type of clinical nature that they’ll now want to rediscover in the transfer market to boost the Dutchman’s side even further when 2025 arrives.

Worth as much as Alisson: Liverpool star's value has risen 261% since exit

He’s been the cause of defeat for the Reds since leaving…

1 ByAngus Sinclair Sep 27, 2024

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool chiefs are now racing to trigger Kevin Zenon’s release clause ahead of the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United, with the clause thought to be relatively low.

The Boca Juniors star, who primarily plays on the left side of midfield, has entered the radar of several top clubs in a race that is only likely to heat up as time goes by, but that should not discourage the Reds in the pursuit of his signature.

Just 23 years old, Zenon is far from the finished product and is instead the type of player who would be signed based on the potential player that he could become. Given that Liverpool are already blessed with world-class options down their left-hand side, it is the kind of development that they could accommodate at Anfield.

Liverpool don't urgently need "magic" Zenon

With Cody Gakpo and Diaz both going stride for stride so far this season, one position that Slot does not need to see strengthened is the left-hand side of his frontline. Both wingers are going toe to toe each week, with the battle between the two quickly becoming an intriguing one to watch at Anfield, as both hand Slot a positive selection headache.

Luis Diaz celebrates

Two players who are the finished product, Zenon is unlikely to get the game time that he needs at Anfield. With just four goals and seven assists in all competitions for Boca Juniors this season (which started in January), the Argentine’s output does not match that of Gakpo and Diaz, which would instantly leave him lagging behind in the pecking order without an improvement.

That said, at 23 years old, it will be interesting to see whether the Reds decide to invest in Zenon’s potential rather than the unfinished product he currently is. Dubbed “magic” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Zenon could discover his peak through a 2025 switch to Anfield.

With so many interested parties in his signature, Zenon remains one to watch this season.

Bangladesh batting coach Ashwell Prince expects Liton Das to be in the mix for one of the opening spots in the T20I series against New Zealand. Liton was one of two returnees to the side after missing the T20Is against Zimbabwe due to an injury and the Australia series due to a family emergency.Liton has opened in 23 out of 33 T20Is for Bangladesh, but in his absence Bangladesh have mostly used the Soumya Sarkar-Mohammad Naim pair, although they too were broken up after eight matches. After their 102-run stand against Zimbabwe in July, they hardly put a dent in the powerplays, lasting no more than 3.3 overs in the following six matches. When Mahedi Hasan was promoted in the fifth T20I against Australia, he added an encouraging 42-run stand in 4.3 overs with Naim.Prince said that finding boundaries is much harder at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, but he welcomed the competition among the openers.”Personally I am not really concerned about the opening batsmen,” Prince said. “I think we had one or two good partnerships in Zimbabwe but conditions were tough against Australia. It is not easy to score boundaries frequently as you would in pitches where the ball is coming on. Adapting to the conditions is important. Partnership would be important. I think we have a strong competition in the opening position. I am sure Liton Das will get an opportunity in this position, as well.”Prince said that the Bangladeshi batters involved in the Australia series had a discussion on how best to tackle the conditions, that is likely to be similar against New Zealand later this week.”I am expecting similar conditions against New Zealand. The batsmen from Australia series had a nice discussion yesterday, sharing with guys like Liton Das and Mushfiqur (Rahim) who didn’t play in that series.”These are experienced guys but they shared what worked and what we like to improve on from the Australia series, taking it into the New Zealand series coming up,” he said. But Prince said that Bangladesh will take these visitors lightly at their own peril. He said that New Zealand will plan better now that they have seen how Australia played here.”I think we can expect New Zealand to analyse and plan well, using the recent Australia series to learn from. They are a street-wise team who would plan meticulously against every batsmen, bowlers and pitches. They will use every bit of information to help them,” he said.

O Botafogo, diante do teto salarial, ofereceu R$ 150 mil.

That was definitely the case when Villa unexpectedly toppled Bayern Munich 1-0 in the Champions League to start October off with a bang, whilst wins such as the 3-2 Premier League victory over Everton were also breathless in nature, as Unai Emery’s men fought back from two goals down to win the exhilarating contest.

Morgan Rogers has been one standout performer for his exciting side this season so far, having only really been used as a bit-part player last campaign, before turning into a definite on his manager’s teamsheet in the here and now.

Rogers' season so far

Only signing for Villa back in the winter window earlier this year, after walking away from Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough for a shot in the Premier League, there would have been pressure on Rogers’ shoulders to impress making the step-up, considering his former education in the Manchester City youth team.

The youngster would go on to make 11 appearances in the top flight in the second half of 2023/24, scoring three goals, while this campaign it has begun to truly slot into place for the 22-year-old at Villa Park.

Rogers has one goal and two assists next to his name when playing in the Premier League this campaign, with both of those assists coming against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the end of September, where the youthful attacking midfielder ran the show for his side.

The exciting Villa number 27 would create three big chances in that eventual 3-1 win for his high-flying outfit, thankful for the likes of Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran for finishing them off, whilst his showing against Manchester United last time out nearly made the 0-0 draw come to life as the ex-Boro starlet fired two efforts at Andre Onana’s net.

Many punters at Villa Park will be aware though that Rogers isn’t the finished article yet by any stretch of the imagination, as he continues to grow and learn as a youngster plying his trade.

There’s even a former Villa man outperforming the £15m signing in his new surroundings this campaign, who the West Midlands outfit allowed to leave for nothing.

The player now outperforming Rogers

The player in question is Bertrand Traore, who suffered from an up-and-down time in England when on the books of Emery’s men.

After a stunning debut campaign saw him fire home seven goals and pick up six assists in league action, his importance to the cause would start to diminish, not helped by the fact the Burkina Faso international constantly found himself near to the Villa Park treatment room.

Looking at the table above, however, the former Chelsea youth product is currently dazzling in his fresh surroundings in the Netherlands, having helped himself to three goals and four assists playing for Ajax across 12 games, compared to Rogers’ lesser three overall.

Of course, this is an environment the 29-year-old knows well having previously been on the roster of the Amsterdam giants before his switch to Villa, but it’s a welcome return to form all the same for the right winger who struggled during the latter stages of his time at Emery’s side.

He did have this up his sleeve at points though when starring with his ex-employers, leading to former Villa boss Dean Smith describing the experienced talent as “marvellous”, but it was a sorry end to his stay in the West Midlands when he was allowed to exit for nothing.

Now, that could be a regret on the end of Emery and Co, but the Spaniard will be content with the faces he has in his group at the moment regardless, as he hopes Rogers can kick on even more when football resumes.
