The prospect of the first two Tests of the India-England series being played behind closed doors has grown stronger after the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association informed its members that no crowds would be allowed at the MA Chidambaram stadium. The TNCA took the decision despite the Indian government recently ruling that outdoor sport could be conducted with spectators at 50% capacity.Chennai will host the first two matches of the four-Test series with the first Test scheduled to be held from February 5 to 9 and the second from February 13 to 17. Both teams will then travel to Ahmedabad for the last two Tests, to be played at Motera stadium. The third Test, to be played under lights, is scheduled from February 24 to 28 and final Test from March 4 to 8.England’s tour of India, which also includes five T20Is (to be played in Ahmedabad) and three ODIs (in Pune), is the first international cricket that India will host since the sport went on a global hiatus last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. India ranks second globally in terms of total Covid-19 infections reported, with its count inching towards the 11-million mark.On January 20 the TNCA secretary R Ramaswamy sent a circular to the association’s members saying the decision to bar crowds was taken in unison with the BCCI as a “preventive measure”. “In view of the prevailing Covid pandemic, BCCI has decided not to take any kind of risk with the safety of the players during the forthcoming India-England Test series,” Ramaswamy said. “As per BCCI directive, the first two Test matches will take place behind closed doors (No Spectators/Guests/Sub-Committee Members) as a preventive measure.”Incidentally the Indian government had said outdoor sports could have crowds of up to 50% capacity. “For outdoor events, spectators will be allowed upto a maximum of 50% of the total capacity of the stadium,” the Indian Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had said while putting out a note on December 26. The note was part of the “standard operating procedures and guidelines for conducting sporting competition in India in the Covid-19 environment.”Despite the TNCA decision, a senior official at the Gujarat Cricket Association, which runs the Motera ground, remained optimistic of having some section of the ground open to crowds. In 2020 the refurbished Motera was inaugurated by former US president Donald Trump. With a capacity of 110,000 Motera is the biggest-capacity ground in world cricket. The GCA official said that subject to the permission of both the Indian and Gujarat state governments, if not half, at least tickets could be sold to fill the stadium to at least 20-30% capacity.Both squads are scheduled to land in Chennai by January 27 and will straightaway enter a biosecure bubble, which has become the norm in all cricket. After an initial three-day quarantine, teams would start their training while undergoing regular testing.

أظهر بيب جوارديولا مدرب مانشستر سيتي، رد فعله على تجديد عقد إيرلينج هالاند مع النادي، متحدثًا في مؤتمر صحفي اليوم الجمعة.

وأعلن مانشستر سيتي صباح اليوم الجمعة، توقيع هالاند على عقد جديد حتى يونيو 2034.

وظهر جوارديولا في مؤتمر صحفي قبل مباراة مانشستر سيتي وإيبسويتش تاون المقرر خوضها يوم الأحد في الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز.

وقال جوارديولا: “إذا استمر هالاند بنفس الأرقام التي حققها منذ وصوله، نعم لن يتم تحطيم أرقامه القياسية أبدًا، لكن الأمر سيعتمد على الفريق، وهو أيضًا”.

وأضاف: “لكنها أخبار استثنائية لنا جميعًا، النادي، عندما يقرر لاعب ما التوقيع على هذا النوع من العقود التي لم يتم توقيعها من قبل، فهذا لأنه يريد أن يُظهر مدى رغبته الشديدة في التواجد هنا”.

وأوضح بيب: “بعد أن وقع إيرلينج هالاند عقده، تبادلنا التهاني، إنه يجعلني مدربًا أفضل ويجعل طاقمنا الفني أفضل بالتأكيد، إنه يساعدني”.

وواصل: “بالطبع بإمكان هالاند التحسن، في غضون 10 سنوات، يا إلهي، لا أحد يعرف أبدًا ما سيحدث! إنها فترة طويلة جدًا، ودائمًا في مسيرة قصيرة عليك أن تقول، حسنًا، ابق، وانظر ماذا سيحدث، وقد أثبت ما يريده، ويثق في النادي”.

وأكمل: “علينا أن نخلق بيئة لا يمكن إيقافه فيها، لأنه الأفضل هناك… إنه لا يزال صغيرًا جدًا، وأنا متأكد تمامًا من أنه سينضج من خلال اللعب والمباريات، وسوف يحدث ذلك بشكل طبيعي”.

وأستطرد: “لا أشعر بأنه رجل لديه عقد ويقول الآن لدي هذا العقد وسأغفو، لن يحدث هذا، إنه يحب اللعب، وهو منافس كبير، ولكن في الوقت نفسه لديه القدرة على الهروب من اللحظات الجيدة والسيئة على الفور، إنه يتمتع بعقلية جيدة حقًا لنسيان ما حدث، والتفكير في القادم”.

وعن قرار هالاند بالبقاء في مانشستر سيتي لمدة 10 سنوات أخرى، علّق: “إنه قادم من النرويج؛ أعتقد أن الطقس هنا في مانشستر أفضل، وقد تأقلم بشكل مثالي، وأعتقد أن ما حدث هو لأنه يحب النادي والأشخاص المحيطين به، ويحب الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز، ويحب أن يكون هنا مع زوجته والآن أصبح أبًا”.

وأردف: “لذا أعتقد أنه تصور أنه لا يوجد مكان أفضل يمكن أن يكون فيه الآن في السنوات العشر القادمة.، ولهذا السبب قرر هو وعائلته اتخاذ هذه الخطوة”.

وتابع: “في الموسم المقبل، إذا بقيت هنا، سأكون قضيت 10 سنوات في مانشستر سيتي، لذا عليه أن يهزمني!”.

وعن رد فعله بعدما أخبره المدير الرياضي بيجيريستين بأن هالاند سيوقع لـ 10 سنوات، أوضح بيب: “قلت، هل يمكنك تكرار ذلك؟!، فقال لي، بالتأكيد، قلت، “نعم، أخبار جيدة!” هذا يعني الكثير”.

وأفاد: “أعتقد أن كلا الطرفين، لن يوافق النادي على تقديم هذه الصفقة إذا لم يكن إيرلينج متأكدًا تمامًا من التضحية بعشر سنوات من حياته لنادٍ واحد، كلا الطرفين سعداء وقد فعلوا ذلك”.

وعن دعم مجلس الإدارة، قال جوارديولا: “لقد أظهروا ذلك، النادي يجلب اللاعبين إلى هنا، كانت الثقة موجودة دائمًا وفي الشهر أو الشهر ونصف الشهر الماضيين، في بيئة أخرى لم أكن لأظل هنا”.

Pakistan’s attack will nonetheless be pleased with the pressure they put on a South African line-up that continues to grapple with its approach to batting in the subcontinent, with no-one able yet to convert a start into something more.Pakistan also didn’t have a centurion in their first innings but seventies from Babar Azam and Faheem Ashraf provided the fulcrum around which the rest operated in the face of an intense show by Anrich Nortje. In Nauman’s next over, Bavuma defended a ball onto his boot which the on-field umpires referred for a catch and saw the ball had hit the ground too, and in the over after that Pakistan referred what they thought was a catch off a Bavuma sweep that came off his arm.In all that, Aiden Markram had steadily built his way into the 30s and appeared relatively settled but miscued as he tried to whip Nauman to leg and skied the ball to mid-on. South Africa were 81 for 4 and in some trouble before de Kock played a carefree cameo, which included five fours, to provide an energetic end to the day.

Brereton Diaz expressed his delight at completing the move, telling Southampton's official website: “I’m absolutely buzzing. It’s been smooth these past couple of days, and I’m happy to get everything sorted and signed. I’m really excited to meet everyone, it’s great to be involved with this great club.

“Watching the club when I was younger, it was always in the Premier League. Obviously last season, the way the team played, they went down but they bounced straight back up as a team. Also the gaffer as well – everything has aligned together, and I think it’s an amazing club. I can’t wait to get started.”

It looked as though the Chile international would joined by another attacking reinforcement too. According to Eduardo Burgos of Diario AS, Southampton were in direct contact with Alejo Veliz over a season-long loan move from Tottenham Hotspur. Negotiations were reportedly underway, but La Liga side Espanyol emerged to seal a deal from under their noses.

"Powerful" Veliz would have replaced Adams

Amid all of the arrivals, Adams quietly headed for the exit door upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the last campaign. But as quiet as his exit was, Southampton still need to replace the Scotland international, which is where Veliz would have come in. The Spurs youngster is yet to really make things stick on loan or in North London, but the opportunity to work under Martin could have changed that.

Nonetheless, the 20-year-old has returned to La Liga, where he earned plenty of praise from former Sevilla manager Quique Sanchez Flores: “He has a lot of desire, he’s powerful, he comes from a club in Argentina where they are pure fire, and I think he’s going to give us a lot. We are going to have a lot of faith in him."

Southampton, meanwhile, must now turn their attention elsewhere to replace Adams. A player who brought plenty of Premier League experience and an added eye for goal, Saints could be left struggling if they fail to replicate the Scot's quality this summer.

It's been a mixed summer at Goodison Park – perhaps even one some will deem a success in the circumstances – but the transfer window is far from over. The future of Jarrad Branthwaite could still change and the Toffees may yet add further reinforcements, despite their ongoing ownership issues. So far, the Merseyside club have welcomed Iliman Ndiaye, Tim Iroegbunam, Jesper Lindstrom and, most recently, Jake O'Brien.

The young central defender expressed his delight after completing a move to Goodison Park, telling Everton's official website: “I’m buzzing and so happy to have signed for Everton. I've been dreaming of this kind of move in the Premier League, with such a historic club. It's a very exciting move for me.

“Everton is a huge club with a lot of history behind it and there's a big future as well. When the transfer window opened there were other clubs in for me but there was only one club I wanted to go to – it was Everton. They’ve shown the faith in me so now it's my turn to show why on the pitch.”

Now, the Toffees could follow the arrival of a defender with the arrival of an attacking reinforcement. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, with talks open, Everton could be offered the chance to sign El Bilal Toure in a swap deal for Beto, as Atalanta look to replace Gianluca Scamacca following his ACL injury, in a swap deal which may soon "take off".

Toure, of course, was reportedly the subject of Everton's £34m bid last summer, before a move failed to materialise. A year on from that bid, they may finally get their man.

"Lethal" Toure's injury record is a concern

Given their lack of new owners, Everton are not in a position to get things wrong in the transfer market and signing a player who has had injury concerns in the last year or so represents a risk they may be better off avoiding.

Toure, though still just 22 years old, missed 32 games courtesy of a hamstring injury last season, 13 games for an unknown muscle injury in the season prior for UD Almeria, and 11 games in the 2021/22 campaign through another hamstring injury at Stade Reims. No matter how "lethal" the forward's finishing is, as described by Atalanta BC News, he can't prove that clinical nature when sidelined.

It's worth noting too, that Dominic Calvert-Lewin's own injury record is far from ideal, so sacrificing Beto in exchange for another unreliable option on the fitness front would be quite the risk from Everton at this stage.
