A quality half-century from skipper Jess Duffin and three wickets from Molly Strano has sewn up a finals berth for the Melbourne Renegades with a win over Sydney Thunder at the Junction Oval. The Renegades win ensured two-time WBBL champions Sydney Sixers will miss the finals for the first time in tournament history.Duffin made 53 from 44 balls with six fours and a six to help her side post a competitive 6 for 151. She got good support from Danni Wyatt who made 44 from 31 after the Renegades had slumped to 2 for 6 in the third over courtesy two wickets from two balls by Samantha Bates. Rene Farrell went wicketless in her final WBBL game. The Thunder’s chase wilted under the pressure of the disciplined Renegades attack. They could not score at better than a run a ball in the powerplay. Strano removed three of the top four inside the first 13 overs while Alex Blackwell was run out in her final WBBL innings. The Thunder finished 29 runs short.Finals line-up (Allan Border Field)

Sydney Sixers v Adelaide StrikersA blistering 38-ball 84 from Alyssa Healy set up a consolation win for Sydney Sixers against Adelaide Strikers, as they finished their campaign in fifth place. The Strikers finished second despite the loss, and have a semi-final berth booked.Healy’s was a largely single-handed effort that included seven sixes and as many fours, but she found support from Ashleigh Gardner, as the duo added 65 from 38 balls, and later from Marizanne Kapp, who contributed 24 before falling in the final over as Sixers posted 177. Healy reached her fifty in 26 balls, before a rapid acceleration saw her add another 31 in just 12 deliveries. A hundred was there for the taking with more than six overs left but she was cleaned up by Suzie Bates, which meant only 44 came from the last 39 balls. The Strikers lost momentum as quickly as they had gained it, off to a disastrous start with Bates falling for a duck to Stella Campbell, and Tahlia McGrath becoming her second victim for 6. Sophie Devine, though, wasn’t done plundering runs this season, hammering a 38-ball 60 – her eighth fifty – that saw her displace Beth Mooney as the highest run-getter. While she was at the crease, the Strikers were in with a shot, but after she fell to Erin Burns in the 15th leaving them 60 to get from 33, their challenge petered out, as they fell a good 13 runs short.Melbourne Stars v Brisbane HeatBeth Mooney and spinners helped table-toppers Brisbane Heat secure hosting rights for the finals with a win against Melbourne Stars in the rain-reduced game at the Junction Oval.Teenaged legspinner Amelia Kerr finished with impressive figures of 2 for 4 in the two overs she bowled in the 10-overs-a-side encounter, while left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen bagged 2 for 14 as they ran through the Stars’ batting line-up to restrict them to 87 for 6. After a strong 45-run opening partnership between Lizelle Lee and Elyse Villani, Jonassen triggered a collapse with the former’s wicket. Stars then lost six wickets for 34 runs in space of 4.4 overs, Villani top-scoring with 25 off 17 balls. In reply, Mooney started off strongly, hitting seven fours on her way to an unbeaten 27-ball 50. Laura Harris chipped in with a 13-ball 21 as Heat chased the target down in 8.4 overs.Perth Scorchers v Hobart HurricanesMeg Lanning struck her first WBBL century to ensure the Perth Sorchers entered finals weekend on the back of victory with a 35-run win over the Hobart Hurricanes at Lilac Hill. Lanning and Nicole Bolton (44) added a monstrous 154 for the first wicket with Lanning finishing on 101 off 67 balls in a total of 4 for 167. The Hurricanes’ chances of chasing it down disappeared when Nicola Carey, Heather Knight and the big-hitting Chloe Tryon fell in the space of two overs.

Liverpool eye "exceptional" Championship ace who scored a winner at Anfield

Liverpool are interested in completing the signing of an "exceptional" attacking player in the summer transfer window, despite his current club trying to tie him down to a new deal.

Liverpool transfer news

There is plenty of negativity surrounding the Reds at the moment, following successive disappointing trips to Manchester United, but they cannot afford to feel sorry for themselves with two trophies still to play for.

Regardless of whether Liverpool go all the way in the Premier League title race this season, it is clear that further signings will be needed in the summer however, allowing Jurgen Klopp's replacement to bring in the right players to suit his system.

The Merseysiders have been linked with an audacious move for Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde, which would be a stunning piece of business, but it would be a big surprise if the La Liga giants were willing to let one of their most important players leave.

Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde.

Jeremie Frimpong is another individual who has been backed to join Liverpool in the next window, having stood out as a key man for a Bayer Leverkusen side who are on the cusp of winning the Bundesliga. He is primarily a right wing-back, though, so whether he is needed when Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley are already in the squad is up for debate.

Joel Matip's impending departure when his contract expires at the end of the season will mean that a new centre-back is needed, and Juventus' highly-rated teenage star Dean Huijsen has been linked with a switch to Anfield. While he only has one appearance to his name for his permanent club to date, he has done well on loan at Roma this season, playing 13 times and averaging two clearances per game.

Liverpool want "exceptional" Leeds star

According to Football Transfers, Liverpool want to sign Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville this summer, with Newcastle United and AC Milan also in the mix to acquire his signature.

The report says that "should Leeds achieve promotion, we understand that the side will look to offer their Dutch star a bumper new deal to remain at Elland Road", although there is "not a guarantee" of him accepting it.

Crysencio Summerville.

Summerville is a player who Liverpool know well, with the Dutchman breaking Reds hearts with a late winner at Anfield in the Premier League last season. Incredibly, that remains Virgil van Dijk's only-ever home league defeat in a Reds shirt, over six years after joining the club.

The 22-year-old has become a vital player for Leeds, playing a massive role in their Championship promotion push this season, scoring 17 goals and registering eight assists in the competition.

Invariably used on the left wing, Summerville could be viewed as strong competition for Luis Diaz, not to mention a long-term option with the potential to develop further under Liverpool's next manager. He has been hailed as "really, really exceptional" by former Reds striker Michael Owen in the past, and would surely jump at the opportunity to move to Anfield.

Overnight rain washes out play on day four

A scintillating onslaught from the weather overnight proved yet again to be the definitive performance in the Rawalpindi Test

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando14-Dec-2019

A spectator waits for the conditions to improve•AFP

Stumps A scintillating onslaught from the weather overnight proved yet again to be the definitive performance in the Rawalpindi Test, which did not see a single ball bowled on day four before play was called off at noon. Frigid showers have been in outstanding form right through this Test, and the force with which they imposed themselves on a hapless outfield ensured that the turf was too sodden for play. The covers also showed signs of having endured a battering, with vast pools of water laying atop them in the morning. The groundstaff cleared some of the water off them over the course of several hours, but this merely made an inevitable result look a little closer than it was. There was just no beating the weather in this mood.

Poch could replace Palmer with Chelsea’s "electric" £100k-p/w star

Chelsea are back in action once again in the Premier League tonight as they prepare to travel across London to take on Arsenal at The Emirates.

The Blues were knocked out of the FA Cup on Saturday as they were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City at Wembley, thanks to a late strike from Bernardo Silva.

Mauricio Pochettino's side will not be winning any silverware this season but still have the chance to qualify for the Europa Conference League or the Europa League, which means that every game is important and all three points are needed this evening.

A win for Chelsea would see them move up to seventh in the Premier League, ahead of West Ham United and Manchester United, and level on points with Newcastle United in sixth, who have a better goal difference at the moment.

The Blues could, however, be without their superstar forward Cole Palmer for this clash with the Gunners, as he is currently a major doubt to be fit for the game.

Latest Cole Palmer fitness news

According to Pochettino, the England international has been struggling with an illness and may not be ready to take to the field at The Emirates tonight.

The Chelsea boss stated that, as of Monday, he did not "believe" that the left-footed maestro would be involved in the game, and added that the attacker may not even be able to play if he recovers on Tuesday.

He added that it would be a "good" challenge for his team to face the Gunners without Palmer in the starting XI, as it could motivate the other players to prove that the side is not "Cole Palmer Football Club".

There is little doubt that the English magician will be a tough act to follow for whoever is tasked with taking his place in the lineup, due to his phenomenal form in the Premier League this season.

As you can see in the table above, the 21-year-old wizard has been outstanding in the final third with a staggering 29 direct goal contributions in just 28 appearances since his move from Manchester City last summer.

He is the joint-top scorer in the division, alongside former teammate Erling Haaland, and only three players – Kieran Trippier, Pascal Gross, and Ollie Watkins – have registered more assists.

Chelsea, therefore, do not have anyone in their current squad who has proven that they can reach similar levels, as not many players in the entire league have proven that so far this term.

However, his potential absence does provide someone with an opportunity to step up and make their mark with a big performance against the Gunners.

Instead of going for the experience of Raheem Sterling, Pochettino must unleash speedster Mykhailo Mudryk on the left flank, moving Conor Gallagher into a central role.

Raheem Sterling's form this season

The former England international, who has one goal in his last 16 games in all competitions, has struggled in front of goal at times this season for the Blues.

Now 29, Sterling is an experienced option who has been there and done it in the Premier League over the years, for Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea.

However, his work in the final third during the 2023/24 campaign has left a lot to be desired. The right-footed attacker has scored six goals and missed 11 'big chances' in 27 league appearances, which has included 21 starts.

Raheem Sterling

This shows that he has not made the most of the opportunities that have been created for him so far in the top-flight, as he has spurned five more 'big chances' than the forward has scored goals.

Sterling has also failed to provide creative quality on a consistent basis for the London-based outfit, with four assists and one key pass per game on average.

The 29-year-old attacker has not been efficient in his offensive or defensive duels, either, with a success rate of just 38% in his attempted dribbles, to go along with a duel success rate of 39% in his battles on the ground and in the air combined.

Why Pochettino should unleash Mykhailo Mudryk

Pochettino must now unleash Mudryk from the start on the left flank ahead of Sterling, as he has the potential to offer more than the English dud in and out of possession.

Firstly, the Ukraine international has won 45% of his duels, including 48% of his ground battles, in the Premier League this season, and could, therefore, provide slightly more strength off the ball to compete against opposition defenders.

The young dynamo, who journalist Nizaar Kinsella hailed as "electric" last year, has also completed 55% of his attempted dribbles in the top-flight.

This shows that the £100k-per-week speedster can beat his man more often than not on the wing, whereas Sterling has been tackled 62% of the time so far.

As you can see in the table above, Mudryk has been less wasteful in front of goal – with more goals than 'big chances' missed – and has only created one fewer 'big chance' for his teammates in nine fewer starts.

This suggests that the 23-year-old whiz, who ranks within the top 10% of Premier League attacking midfielders and wingers for progressive carries (5.82) per 90 this term, has been more efficient at the top end of the pitch than Sterling, given the difference in their playing time and contributions in attack.

Therefore, Pochettino should provide Mudryk with an opportunity to start on the wing against Arsenal in the absence of Palmer, ahead of Sterling, with the added motivation of showing the Gunners what they missed out on.

Chelsea eyeing "clinical" £151m signing to upgrade on Mudryk

The Blues are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the impressive “difference-maker”.

ByDan Emery Apr 23, 2024

Mikel Arteta's side reportedly had two offers rejected by Shakhtar Dontestk before the winger completed his £89m move to Stamford Bridge at the start of last year, and the young gem may want to prove to them that they should have done more to land his signature.

Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez hit half-centuries as Pakistan canter to series win

Tamim Iqbal’s lone hand goes in vain as the Bangladesh batsmen put up another ordinary performance

The Report by Danyal Rasool25-Jan-2020

Getty Images

It might not matter this sort of game is worlds removed from anything Pakistan will have thrown at them in the upcoming T20 World. The conditions will be different, the pressure higher, the tension sharper. They will be content to draw comfort from snapping back into the team who put these performances series in, series out for the best part of the last three years, and hope this represents a return to that form. For today, just as it was yesterday, an unchanged Pakistan kept Bangladesh on a leash right throughout the first innings, the below-par 136 the visitors cobbled together never once looking like it might be enough. And while Ahsan Ali did fell early – he has time to add consistency and match-awareness to his game – Pakistan knew exactly what to do next. Babar Azam and Mohammad Hafeez combined for an unbroken 131-run partnership that took them through to the finish with 20 balls to spare. Hafeez registered a half-century that should do his chances of attaining an extended run in the T20I side no harm, while Babar Azam bounced back from a duck in the first game to finish unbeaten on 66.Tamim’s lone handBatting first on a greener wicket as compared to Friday’s, Tamim Iqbal’s lone hand of resistance was the only thing holding Bangladesh’s innings together. Shaheen Afridi ensured there would be no repeat of a stand between the openers, snaring Mohammad Naim for a first-ball duck. Mahedi Hasan, coming into the side off the back of a stellar BPL, nicked off to Mohammad Hasnain soon after, while Shadab Khan got a slightly fortuitous lbw to remove Liton Das that withstood a review from the batsman.Tamim, meanwhile, was batting on a slightly different surface, the kind the groundstaff hoped they had produced. Without ever really upping the scoring rate, he never once appeared threatened by Pakistan’s bowling attack in the manner his team-mates were. Even the acceleration at the end was instigated by the opener when he brought up his fifty by tonking Shadab to deep cover before crunching two more fours in the over as Bangladesh made a late surge. He was tiring as a direct hit sent him back in the 18th over before Haris Rauf, who put in another audition as perhaps Pakistan’s most consistently quick limited-overs bowler, removed captain Mahmudullah in the final over. The partnershipBangladesh might have hoped to make it scrappy once more when a struggling Ahsan failed to get off the mark off his first six balls. The lack of experience showed as he lashed out on the seventh, only succeeding in skying it to mid-off. With just six runs scored off ten balls at that point, it appeared Pakistan would be made to work hard for their win once more. However, it didn’t work out that way. Most importantly, because Babar was still around to anchor the chase, and even as Hafeez took his time settling in, Babar kept the scoreboard ticking over regularly from the other end, removing any pressure the 39-year-old might have felt. When Hafeez did come into his own, Babar was content to pass the strike over to him. In the end, it was the veteran who brought up his half-century first, and finished as the top-scorer with an unbeaten 67.Pakistan’s bowlingAmid the flair of the chase and the ordinariness of Bangladesh’s performance, it may be easy to lose sight of what set up the win in the first place. Pakistan chose to stick with the bowling attack that had brought dividends in the first game, and the wicket off Shaheen’s second ball suggested they were up for the fight once more. The biggest positive will be Hasnain’s vastly improved performance – his lack of control on Friday was one of the few blots on an otherwise spotless bowling effort – will please Waqar Younis, the bowling coach, plenty. He ended up being the pick of the lot, accounting for Mahedi and Afif Hossain, to finish with figures of 4-0-20-2.
