Moeen’s 121 off 60 balls was the highest score of his T20 career and made light of Sussex’s 184 for 6

There is no more relaxed sight amid the frenzy of the Blast than Moeen Ali in full flow. An unbeaten hundred that stunned a capacity Hove crowd into silent admiration ensured that Worcestershire, the defending champions, returned to Finals Day as they subdued Sussex, the county they beat in last year’s final, by eight wickets with 14 balls to spare. No England player embodies his county more than Moeen. Others will briefly show their allegiance on their rare returns; Moeen somehow becomes Worcestershire, leading, spreading calm and seeking responsibility where on occasions with England he has failed to grasp it. The tranquil hitting that attracts so much criticism when it goes wrong looks so wonderful when it delivers.Lacking overseas players Hamish Rutherford and Callum Ferguson and with Wayne Parnell, a key player with the ball this season, succumbing to illness, Worcestershire were vulnerable. But Moeen took another stroll down Easy Street, as if oblivious to the pressure. The outcome was an unbeaten 121 off 60 balls, with 11 sixes and eight fours, an innings of gentle destruction which was the highest score of his T20 career and which made light of Sussex’s more than respectable 184 for 6. The dew helped the ball skip on a little in the second innings, but it was helpful not decisive. The winners of the North and South Groups, Lancashire and Sussex, have now both been eliminated with Worcestershire joining Essex and Notts at Edgbaston on September 21 and Gloucestershire and Derbyshire left to contest the last place at Bristol on Saturday.Alex Hales and Chris Nash logged the Blast’s highest partnership of the season on Thursday; 24 hours later, Moeen and Riki Wessels capped it with a stand of 177 in 17 overs. Moeen moved trance-like from 50 to 100 in 20 balls, caressing through the line as repeatedly cleared Hove’s small boundaries with 15 metres to spare; Wessels ferreted around for 47 from 46 balls, an exercise based upon the urge to give Moeen the strike, before he pulled to deep square with six needed. It could have been so different for Sussex. Reece Topley, who has been on painkillers to get through recent T20 matches, a sign that after five stress fractures the left-armer is still not free from injury fears, delivered the best two balls of the night in his opening over. Both swung late, the first hitting Joe Leach’s off stump to end fond imaginings that his rustic pinch hitting might give Worcestershire a flyer, the second missing Moeen’s off stump by a whisker. The blemish that mattered, however, belonged to Alex Carey, Sussex’s Australian keeper-batsman, who let a simple head-high catch through his hands after Moeen, on five, top-edged a pull against OIlie Robinson. Luke Wright, Sussex’s captain, said simply: “Carey has got us to the quarter-finals. No blame attached.”Other opportunities were spurned, too, although by then the match was won. David Wiese, who had a bad night, allowed a catch through his hands when Moeen was 78, a pull to deep square against the legspinner Will Beer when Wiese never found a stable footing. Topley also spilled a skier off Danny Briggs at deep midwicket when Moeen was 108. In the next over, he rocked back to pull Robinson for six to claim the match.”I’m a massive Mo fan,” said Wright. “We had the best of him and we had no answer.” What could Sussex have done differently? Perhaps bring back Robinson early because he, at that stage of the innings, had the potential to bowl an unplayable ball, rather than meet him with seven overs of spin in mid-innings. Or squeeze Wessels with tighter fields in the hope of a rush of wickets at the other end that might break Moeen’s equilibrium. But they would have been faint hopes.Sussex felt they had done enough with the bat. Reach the sudden-death phase of the Blast and there is nothing better than seeing your most dangerous batsmen spin the roulette wheel and see it come up in his favour. There is no more dangerous and yet vulnerable new-ball batsman in the Blast than Sussex’s Phil Salt. In the circumstances, his fourth T20 half-century of the summer – 72 from 40 balls – felt like a shift in Sussex’s favour.Salt and Wright go together better than salt and pepper, the condiments to add flavour to Sussex’s opening forays. Wright makes room to thrash the ball through the off side; Salt gets inside the ball and punts it to the leg side. Salt, on 19, was dropped at mid-on by Charlie Morris, playing his first T20 in three years. By the time Daryl Mitchell’s mix-and-match dismissed both in successive overs, Sussex had 108 on the board after 10.3 overs.Mitchell’s intervention for the ninth over was a gamble: a runs-for-wickets intervention. Salt sent him for four leg-side sixes in no time, but by the end of his second over he had both openers on his card, Wright to a mishit to midwicket, Salt very well held by Wessels, running to his left at long-on.That was the start of a regular loss of Sussex wickets with Ed Barnard, one of the most serviceable T20 cricketers in the Blast, also to the fore as he removed Carey and Wiese in the space of three balls, Carey lobbing up a slower ball as he tried to work it to backward square, Wiese clinically yorked.Laurie Evans observed the casualties around him and remained a figure of total calm. That has not always been the case, but these days he is becoming a fixture on the T20 international circuit and is about to head to St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League. His unbeaten 41 from 31 balls was an innings played in the shadows. On many nights it would have been enough. But he couldn’t account for Moeen.

>> ATUAÇÕES: Zé Rafael muda o jogo, e Willian garante vitória do Palmeiras
No segundo tempo, precisávamos mudar as dinâmicas.

Tottenham Hotspur will enjoy a sojourn away from competitive action this weekend with their Premier League opponents, Chelsea, attending to obligations in the Carabao Cup final.
It's a double-edged sword. Influential full-backs Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie both missed out last weekend as Ange Postecoglou's side slumped to defeat at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers and with both stars likely to have missed out this weekend, a break isn't a bad thing.
That said, Spurs need fluency after fluctuating in results and performance, last securing successive victories in the league before Christmas Day, and after Manchester United's shock Old Trafford loss against Fulham, fifth-placed Tottenham could now create some breathing space.
Ange Postecoglou.
Securing top four is the incentive but Postecoglou's project is definitely moving in the right direction, with some exciting improvements to the first team and some incredible development within the academy ranks.
Tottenham's development squad have so many talented youngsters pushing for prominence, and while the likes of Jamie Donley perch at the top, Tyrese Hall might just be the club's most precocious starlet.
Tyrese Hall could be a bigger talent than Jamie Donley
Hall might only be young but he has been riding the crest of a wave recently as he continues to sparkle brightest among many high-quality peers, having joined the club from London rivals Chelsea during his formative years.
Stepping up to thrive at U18 level across the 2021/22 campaign – while still a schoolboy – Hall is clearly destined for the top level and now he must just ply his trade industriously to continue the growth that has whipped relevant circles into a frenzied buzz.
This season, the 18-year-old has scored six goals and supplied five assists in all competitions, principally in the U18 Premier League but recently being promoted to the Premier League 2 and supplying two assists on his debut.
While Jamie Donley is the creme-de-la-creme of Wayne Burnett's development squad right now, having posted six goals and 12 assists from 17 matches this season, the 19-year-old might just find himself leapfrogged if Hall continues in his ascendancy.
In The Pipeline
Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.
Hall has received a glowing endorsement from Tottenham insider Superhotspur, who outlined his best attributes, writing that he is 'a player with great ability on the ball' and that he is 'capable of creating chances out of very little, and he with his consistently impressive weight and vision for a pass, he is also capable of making those all important forward passes.'
Such qualities spring a certain Phil Foden to mind; just imagine, for one moment, if Spurs have such a player on their hands.
Phil Foden's season in numbers
Manchester City are not quite firing on cylinders after winning the treble last season, but the Etihad side are still the best team on the continent and are competing for the biggest honours, with Foden's elite contributions among the most important.
With Kevin De Bruyne sat on the sidelines for large portions of the campaign, the 23-year-old has proved his worth and then some, unceasingly productive.

Moreover, to illustrate this point, the mesmeric England international ranks among the top 5% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 7% for assists, the top 19% for shot-creating actions, the top 2% for pass completion, the top 8% for passes attempted and the top 20% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref.
More succinctly: he is a world-class player. Praised for his "immense" quality by The Times' Henry Winter, Foden continues to thrive at the heart of one of the finest football teams across Europe in a generation, a dynamic dancer through the lanes, balletic in his gait and deadly in the final third.
Hall, while naturally a more defensive-heavy midfielder, has a similarly prodigious sheen to his play and he might just find himself earning comparisons as he continues to rise to the fore.
Manchester City eyeing Hall
On the topic of Man City, Guardiola's side have been reported to be big admirers of Hall by Football Transfers, who have revealed that scouts had been dispatched earlier in February to observe him in action.
Spurs could find homegrown Son heir in "bright" academy whiz
Tottenham are currently nurturing a robust crop of youth talent.
ByAngus Sinclair Feb 24, 2024
The Barnet-born teenager's seamless transition through the levels has suggested that he is of a standard that would not be out of place at the nest of City's system, and while a move might be forthcoming, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy must be steadfast in repelling the advances.
Spurs are currently at the Premier League 2's summit and are creating a mouth-watering youth fold of immense ability, and while Hall would – and should – be confident in his ability to follow the likes of Oscar Bobb, Rico Lewis (and Foden) in Greater Manchester, opting to remain in London might prove to be the more prudent route in the end.
Hall's composed finish against the young Citizens – a clutch of players that the Manchester City powers-that-be wish for him to join – was sadly not enough to prevent a cup exit as the adversaries turned the game on its head.
But it's just another example of his stunning potential, and while Hall is safely ensconced in his fledgling phase as a U18 star (he need not worry about a promotion to the senior squad at this stage), there is no question that the teenager is among the finest midfielders of his age bracket and the vested interest of Manchester City can attest to that.
Spurs must fight fiercely to retain Hall's services, guiding the flickering flame of his development and ensuring that he is clad in Tottenham white when, if all goes to plan, he breaks into the senior set-up and catches the eye.

Senior physiotherapist Andrew Leipus explains the nuts and bolts of an injury that has hampered fast bowlers forever
Nagraj Gollapudi26-Sep-2019
Jasprit Bumrah’s excellence in all three formats makes him stand out•Getty Images
What is a stress fracture?A bone is a living tissue, which can be damaged when put under high physical stress. A build-up of inflammatory cells and swelling in the bone is called a bone stress injury or stress reaction and can be spotted in an MRI scan. But this can progress to a fracture when there is a break in the cortex – the thicker outer layer of the bone. The fracture usually occurs in the ‘pars’ of the vertebrae in the lower back for fast bowlers. It is little bony bridge between the facet joints which take a lot of stress when you extend, laterally flex and vertically compress the spine. And it is normally on the side opposite the bowling arm: so if you are right-arm bowler it is generally the left side of the lower back where the stress fracture will happen. Is it a sudden injury or does it develop over a period of time?A stress fracture can be an acute episode, but it is always in chronically loaded tissue. It is not like you twist your ankle and break your leg where the bone was previously fine. It happens when there is a sudden overload on a weakened area of bone that has not remodelled fast enough to absorb and transmit the physical forces involved. Is workload the main factor in this type of injury?Physical stress and the body’s adaptation to it is a balance between fitness and fatigue. The fitter you are, the more stress resistant you are. Another simple way of looking at it is that bowlers absorb a lot of force on their front foot impact during bowling. Fitter bodies can cope with these forces more efficiently. But when your body is tired, your legs are tired, and your muscles or ‘shock absorbers’ are not doing their job, the bones and joints of the skeleton – essentially the chassis – takes more stress over time. So, if your suspension is broken, you are going to feel every bump in the road. So, generally, yes, high workload is one of many reasons for bone stress injury. This includes both on- and off-field physical load, such as cricket activity and strength and conditioning training sessions. But research also tells us that there are certain patterns of workload associated with a higher generalised risk of injury. If there is a sudden exponential spike in workload above that usually experienced, the overload can be a factor in the development of injury even a few weeks afterward the event. The four big-ticket fast bowlers with the heaviest workloads across international and domestic cricket•ESPNcricinfo Ltd
Chronically high workloads without rest presents an over-reaching scenario where the body’s immune system can become compromised. Even lower workloads can indirectly contribute to a higher risk of injury due to the lack of a training effect (i.e. low specific bowling fitness) and poor preparation prior to bowling too much too soon. The scheduling of fixtures between T20 to ODI and Test formats has also been pointed to as a possible reason in raising injury risk.Any other factors? It could also be a metabolic issue, such as low absorption/production of Vitamin D and Calcium, contributing to poor bone density. It could be any or more of a range of biomechanical factors. The bowler could have stiffness and reduced mobility, strength or control around his hips, ankles, upper back or shoulders, and he compensates through that part of the spine. He might be bowling a particular variation of delivery which increases the load in that area. It could also be related to nutritional factors, poor recovery, or even other aspects of his off-field training regime that need to be considered. Age is also a significant factor for bone stress injury in players under 25.Does the bowling action of someone like Bumrah contribute to this kind of injury? His action is certainly unique. As far as I know, this is the first occurrence of this type of injury with Bumrah. But he has bowled for many years now without suffering a stress fracture, so it is less likely to be technique related and more a function of his training and bowling workload.Normally, what is the period for recovery? If it is just a stress reaction, he could be fine in about four to six weeks with an active rehabilitation programme. But if it is further along the bone stress injury spectrum than this, then it could need three to six months. If the stress fracture is bilateral (a crack on both sides of the same vertebrae), then it might be more than year or longer. What is the danger of it recurring? The primary risk of any injury is a previous injury. The fact that he now has this, statistically raises the risk of recurrence than for someone else who has never had a stress fracture. But he will be put through a thorough rehabilitation programme at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and be monitored carefully, and being a mature player will greatly minimise the risk of it coming back. The key is not to rush the player back and to address all of the factors mentioned above, including ensuring his bowling workloads at the end of his rehab being suitable for the format of the games he will be going into.
There is a spirit about Tottenham Hotspur that was not on display last season, and that stems from Daniel Levy's decision to appoint Ange Postecoglou as first-team manager.
Recent years have seen more high-profile names such as Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte come unstuck, and last season's disappointing eighth-placed finish called for change, else slip further away from those at the forefront of the Premier League.
Harry Kane for Tottenham.
Harry Kane's sale to Bayern Munich in August was a bitter pill to swallow but one that was expected, with the Three Lions captain about to enter the final year of his contract and understandably seeking pastures new at 30 years old, with no European football and no silverware throughout a record-breaking career down N17.
Still, Son Heung-min and Richarlison are hardly struggling to find the back of the net, and signings such as James Maddison, Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner have compensated, with Tottenham fighting for the top four with fresh life under Postecoglou's management.

However, the real success of this early-stage Spurs system lies in the backline's revival, fortified with steel after a woeful 2022/23 campaign that saw an inpour of goals ravage any hopes of achieving their objectives.
How Van de Ven and Romero are performing this season
Last season, things fell apart down at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the crux of this issue was indeed the leaky defence, rectified and then some with the summer acquisitions of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and athletic centre-half Micky van de Ven to slot into Postecoglou's system.
Van de Ven in particular, signed from Wolfsburg in a deal worth £43m, has been a bonafide success so far, described as "absolutely exceptional" by Arsene Wenger since his arrival on English shores.

As per Sofascore, he has completed 95% of his passes across 17 Premier League appearances so far, averaging 5.9 ball recoveries and 2.9 clearances per game as well as succeeding with 63% of his dribbles and 68% of his ground duels. It's no coincidence that Spurs' slump before Christmas ran in tandem with the Dutchman's period of recovery from a hamstring injury.
His partner, Cristian Romero, might have been rooted at the heart of the problems last season, but there's no denying his world-class skills, with a confident peer alongside him working wonders.

After all, as per FBref, Romero ranks among the top 3% of central defenders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 16% for shot-creating actions, the top 11% for pass completion, the top 14% for progressive passes, the top 7% for tackles and the top 12% for interceptions per 90.
This impressive spread of qualities makes it patently clear that the 2022 World Cup winner is one of the Premier League's finest, and while some might raise an eyebrow at his Argentinian compatriot Lionel Messi's praise that he is "the best defender in the world right now", the legendary forward isn't that wide of the mark.
The future is bright, and while these senior signings are exciting, the real success of this new flowering chapter at Tottenham is the remarkable wave of academy talent, with Luka Vuskovic possibly the pick of the bunch.
Why Spurs signed Luka Vuskovic
One of the first to ride this wave of activity among the formative ranks at Tottenham, Vuskovic was announced to have signed for the club in September 2023 when he was still only 16 years old, with his arrival scheduled for 2025 and the deal expected to cost around £12m.
For the time being, he remains in his Croatian homeland with Hajduk Split, where he will continue to nurture his ability and develop into a Premier League-quality defender, having already been described as a "truly amazing" youngster by talent scout Jacek Kulig.
Despite his tender age, Vuskovic is proving to be quite the prospect and has chalked up 11 senior appearances this season: six for Hajduk Split and five for current loan outfit Radomiak Radom in Poland.
As per Sofascore, the young titan has been impressive in the Polish Ekstralasa after scoring twice from just four starting appearances, also averaging 3.6 ball recoveries and 5.6 clearances per game while succeeding with 100% of his dribbles and winning a whopping 71% of his aerial battles.
For certain, the 17-year-old will move to London next year to bolster a Tottenham youth squad that has more than a few players capable of making a mark within Postecoglou's senior setup.
He's not the only youngster to have been signed of late, with Lucas Bergvall one of the most exciting up-and-comers around, but Vuskovic is every bit as big a talent, and the omens bode prosperity down the line for the Lilywhites.
As big a talent as Lucas Bergvall
U21 stars such as Jamie Donley and Alfie Dorrington look like proper prospects, while Levy hijacked Barcelona's move for teenage midfielder Lucas Bergvall in January, with the talent linking up with the squad this summer.
Bergvall has been described as a "generational" talent by one analyst and has certainly caught the eye in Sweden, completing 88% of his passes and 68% of his dribbles in the top flight this season.
Vuskovic, though, is younger and has proved his skill set stretches into different facets of the defensive game, with the athleticism, progressive qualities and defensive solidity making for something of a hybrid between Van de Ven and Romero.

Moreover, imperious Premier League champions Manchester City had a big interest in the player before he chose Spurs, highlighting just how high his ceiling could be.
Ultimately, it's going to be a few years before Vuskovic finds himself earning a regular starting berth down N17, but he has the trappings of a world-class centre-back, and with Bergvall fashioning openings ahead of him, Tottenham might just be on the cusp of a golden age.
