In his first season at the helm, Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has had to deal with some drama surrounding centre-back Charlie Cresswell, who was dropped from the squad after expressing his frustration with his position in the pecking order. The duo have since held fresh talks, paving the way for Cresswell to return to the fold in recent weeks.

Last summer, there was similar tension behind the scenes involving Wilfried Gnonto, who submitted a transfer request and withdrew himself from contention to try to force through a move to Everton. The Toffees made three bids for his services, the last of which was worth £25.7m, but Leeds held firm throughout the saga.
Gnonto subsequently repaired his relationship with Farke by issuing an apology, but he was used sparingly in the first half of the campaign, starting just four Championship matches between the end of the transfer window and the turn of the year.
It seemed as if we may be in for a repeat of the summer's events in January, but instead, Fabrizio Romano has reported that Leeds are getting "closer" to extending the Italian's contract. The club's "priority" is to tie down the young forward, and they're now in the "final" stages of that process.
Crook surprised by Gnonto news
Speaking to GiveMeSport, TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook seemed baffled by the developments around Gnonto and suggested that the mid-season window hadn't panned out in the manner that Leeds had expected.
He said: "I think they were expecting some offers for Wilfried Gnonto in the January transfer window but that didn't materialise. It's a strange one because they fought so hard to keep him and he fought so hard to leave at the beginning of the season. He even went on strike and now he can't get in the team. So it's an odd one. But yeah, I do expect him to stay which probably means [striker is] not a priority position anymore."
Gnonto is reminding Farke what he can do
While Gnonto's imminent extension is definitely a surprise, it's also a welcome development for Leeds. In the past couple of games, the 20-year-old has offered a timely reminder of his qualities.

For only the fourth time since the start of October, he was given the chance to start in the FA Cup tie against Plymouth last month, and he would keep his place for the subsequent league game against Bristol City. Having repaid Farke's faith by scoring the winner at Ashton Gate, he made it three starts in a row in the midweek FA Cup replay, and got the ball rolling in an eventual 4-1 win.

A far cry from his rebellion in the summer, Gnonto is now showing a real determination behind the scenes in the eyes of Farke: "Willie is working hard and we wanted to show that we back him and trust him, to give him a chance to come into his rhythm."
He should without doubt be given the opportunity to to continue his spell in the XI when Leeds host Rotherham on Saturday afternoon and go in search of a sixth win on the bounce.
Manchester City have been rocked by the news that a "world-class" star could leave to join a European giant this summer, according to a new transfer update.
Man City transfer news
Pep Guardiola may have built one of the greatest squads in the history of English football, but he is always on the lookout for new signings, in order to keep his current players on their toes.
West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been linked with a move to the Etihad at the end of the season, with the Hammers unlikely to keep hold of him after he nearly moved to Manchester last summer.

Young Brazilian sensation Savio is expected to join from Girona in the summer, with the 19-year-old a forward with a bright future, currently on loan in Spain from another City Football Group club in Troyes.
It is also vital that City retain the services of the most important players at the club, not least star striker Erling Haaland, whose future has been in the news at times of late. They are confident that they can tie him down to a new deal, though.
Another crucial figure is now being linked with a move away from the Etihad in the summer transfer window, however, in an update that will concern many supporters.
Man City could lose Bernardo Silva
According to Telefoot on X, Bernardo Silva could leave Manchester City for Paris Saint-Germain this summer, having even "agreed" to join them last summer.
Bernardo Silva celebrates scoring for Manchester City.
"Another avenue studied: Bernardo Silva, who already agreed to join Paris last season, before being retained by Pep Guardiola at City. The Portuguese is still in PSG's little papers."
Bernardo has been a sensational player for City ever since arriving from Monaco back in 2017, producing so many memorable moments along the way and winning five Premier League titles. For that reason, it doesn't bear thinking about him moving on, considering he is still only 29 years of age and in his prime as a player.

He has rightly been hailed as a "world-class" footballer by Dion Dublin, and meanwhile, Guardiola has spoken about him in the most glowing way possible in the past, even comparing him to all-time great Lionel Messi:
"He is an extraordinary player, he made two great goals. The action from the second goal looks like Messi, Messi has done that many times. Everyone is so happy to have him here."
Bernardo is the perfect midfielder for City, not only possessing the elite technical brilliance to thrive in such a special team, but also having an incredible engine and winning mentality, allowing him to dig deep in big games and act as a nuisance to opponents.

It does feel as though the Portuguese is linked with a move away every year, only to end up staying put, and the hope is that the same thing happens this summer, with his current City deal not expiring until 2026.

Australian’s 78 leads side to 13-run win at Taunton as Babar Azam, tom Banton hit fifties in vain

Alex Carey marked his Sussex Sharks debut with a brilliant 78 to set up a 13-run Vitality Blast victory over Somerset at Taunton.Australian Carey cracked seven fours and four sixes in a 46-ball innings that entertained a crowd of 7,400. Laurie Evans and David Wiese gave good support in a score of 184 for 8 after losing the toss, while Lewis Gregory claimed 3 for 30.In reply, Somerset could make only 171 for 5, despite an opening stand of 96 in less than 12 overs by Babar Azam, who struck 83 off 50 balls, and Tom Banton, who reached 51 off 45. Tymal Mills was the most economical Sussex bowler with 1 for 27 from 4 overs. The Sharks had managed only 34 for 2 in their six-over power play, losing the wickets of Phil Salt, caught at extra cover off the second ball of the innings, sent down by Max Waller, and Luke Wright, bowled off stump by Jerome Taylor, who had dropped him off Gregory two overs earlier. But the arrival of Carey soon changed the tempo of the innings. The left-hander hit the first six of the match over mid-wicket off Roelof van der Merwe in the eighth over. Soon Carey was timing the ball sweetly and he took a particular liking to the left-arm spin of van der Merwe, lofting him for two straight sixes in the 11th over.Evans provided positive support, claiming a maximum off Craig Overton’s bowling before being caught at deep cover off Somerset’s young left-arm seamer Tom Lammonby, having faced 27 balls and added 73 with Carey. The Aussie went to an impressive fifty from 30 deliveries, with four fours and two sixes, in the 14th over. And, with Wiese also striking the ball cleanly, 49 runs came off just four overs before Carey was brilliantly caught by Lammonby at long-off.It had been an eventful week for Carey, who played in the World Cup but missed out on selection in Australia’s final Ashes squad then had to fly to Geneva to renew his visa so that he could play for Sussex.”It was a crazy build-up to the game for me,” Carey said. “Australia’s Ashes camp in Hampshire did not end until Thursday night and on Friday I travelled to Sussex, but could only watch the game because I didn’t have my visa stamped. To get that done, I had to fly to Geneva at 8 o’clock Saturday morning. I flew back last night and travelled to Taunton today.”Although things did not work out for Australia in the World Cup, I really enjoyed the experience and have been loving my time in England. Today has built on that.”Gregory was the successful bowler at the start of the 19th over, which also saw him dismiss Weisse with the next ball after the batsmen had crossed, caught at deep mid-wicket, and clean bowl Delray Rawlins with the fourth delivery.Sussex lost two late batsmen to run outs by Somerset wicketkeeper Tom Banton but still added 15 to their total off the last over.Somerset were given an encouraging start by Banton and Babar, the pair taking the score to 49 after six overs. Both players quickly gauged the pace of the pitch. Banton swept Danny Briggs for a flat six over deep square in the seventh over and soon Babar cleared the ropes too with a big hit over long-on off the same bowler. At the halfway stage, Somerset were well placed at 85 without loss. But Mills stemmed the flow of runs by conceding only three from the 11th over.Banton hit six fours and a six on the way to his fifty, but the next delivery saw him caught at short fine-leg top-edging an attempted pull off Ollie Robinson.Babar then brought up his second Blast half-century in as many home games, having faced 32-balls and hit five fours and a six.Peter Trego smashed Rashid Khan for a maximum over mid-wicket, but with five overs left Somerset still required 67 and when Babar fell to Khan in the 18th over, the home side’s last chance had gone.
After luring Omar Berrada from arch-rivals Manchester City and making him their new CEO, Jim Ratcliffe and Manchester United now want to appoint the club's first sporting director and have set their sights firmly on Dan Ashworth.
United have yet to make a formal approach to Newcastle, where Ashworth is currently employed, but the Englishman wants to make the move to Old Trafford and INEOS are so confident of securing his services that they haven't even bothered sounding out alternative targets.
Ratcliffe attended meetings at Carrington last season as he ramps up his overhaul, and the future of football director John Murtough is now said to lie in the balance.
Ashworth eyes up Jewell for Man Utd role
Reporting for ESPN, Rob Dawson says that Ashworth would have influence over appointments in United's recruitment department if indeed he joins the Red Devils.

He's said to be a "big admirer" of Sam Jewell, the head of recruitment at his former club Brighton, and he could make an effort to bring him to Manchester should he assume the sporting director role.
Caicedo is Jewell's crowning achievement
Jewell was previously the emerging talent manager at the Amex Stadium but was promoted to the head of recruitment gig after predecessor Paul Winstanley was picked up by Chelsea. Moises Caicedo is without doubt his outstanding success story with the Seagulls, having generated a staggering £111m profit when he moved to Stamford Bridge in a Premier League-record transfer last summer, two and a half years on from his £4m arrival from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle.
Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo.
As you can see in the table below, only three transfers in football history have been more profitable, so it's no wonder that Jewell has attracted interest already. Rangers tried to make him their technical director last autumn, but he resisted their approach because he was happy at Brighton.

However, the opportunity to work under Ashworth at the beginning of a new era at 20-time English champions Man Utd is a different matter entirely. If he does prove to be Ashworth's first appointment, then it will be interesting to see how he adapts to an entirely different recruitment task, looking to find established superstars rather than hidden gems who can be sold on for massive windfalls further down the line.
Ed Smith discussed plan with Joe Root to bring Roy into Test fold after World Cup months ago

Nothing underlines how much England’s World Cup focus has grown to dominate the national team’s thinking quite like the emergence of Jason Roy as the selectors’ choice to open the Test match batting order a matter of weeks before the start of the Ashes.Look for a rationale to choose Roy based upon his red ball numbers for Surrey and England Lions and it is hard to discern one – he has played just three first-class matches since the 2017 county season, and not played more than five first-class matches in a northern summer since 2016.But the undeniable power of his ODI displays, culminating in a World Cup where he was nothing less than essential to England’s victories, have vaulted Roy into a role that England have found problematic for quite some time. In the words of the England selector Ed Smith, the national set-up has been waiting for the right moment to unleash him at Test level, and forecast quite some time ago that the Ashes series following a successful Cup campaign would be ideal.”It’s no great secret the selectors have long been admirers of Jason,” Smith said in Canterbury. “The big question with Jason Roy was when was the ideal time if he was going to make the move into Test cricket? He was injured at the back end of the ODIs against India last summer and then also when he went back to play for Surrey. So he had two injuries then.”Joe Root and I spoke at length months ago about the scenario in which Jason Roy finished the World Cup confident, full of runs and went straight into the Ashes and that’s what we’ve done. It feels like a really good time for Jason to join the Test team as an opener. He’s in and has our full backing.”Jason Roy of Surrey receives treatment from the medical team•Getty Images
Plenty of cricketers have made their way into Test cricket via the limited-overs pathway in the past. Some with great success, like David Warner, others rather less so. Certainly Roy will be hoping to avoid the journey of Aaron Finch last year, as he spiralled into a state of confusion during Tests against India that led momentarily to questions about whether he would be worth his place in the Australian World Cup squad. Smith said that Roy’s evolution as a more three dimensional batsman had been going on for some time, even if his first-class appearances have been few.”It’s a mixture of him as a player, him as a person, him as a performer in all formats actually,” Smith said. “So when he did play at the very back of end of last summer in red-ball cricket he did well for Surrey and then I was keen on him playing a Lions game when again he carried on his good form in red-ball cricket.”I think we’ve all seen him grow and improve as a player in white-ball cricket. He’s a more complete player than he ever has been. There’s never been any doubt about his talent, audacity or his presence at the crease – it’s fantastic . All those things are very clear. He’s also gained improved mastery and adaptability. I think he’s a more complete player now than he ever has been. It just felt like absolutely the right time for Jason to make his Test debut.”Actually where the [World Cup] pitches ended up, it was often a pretty even contest between bat and ball. We all saw, not just in those crucial four effectively knockout games when Jason came back, but also a much longer period of time that Jason is growing as a batsman all the time. That was just one manifestation of a much wider development, I think.”Also read: Morgan has earned the right to decide his own future – StraussOf course there is another tale of an England cricketer riding the coat-tales of his ODI audacity to a Test debut during an Ashes summer, that of Kevin Pietersen in 2005. Asked for a parallel, Smith preferred to look at how Jos Buttler was gradually eased into Test cricket after first making his name as a limited-overs operative. That exposure arguably aided Buttler in becoming an even more effective ODI batsman than he was already.”I suppose the analogy I’ve thought of a little bit would be Jos Buttler. Both different people and different players but there is that sense of trying to catch the right time,” Smith said. “Going back to that first decision last May when coming in as selector it just felt like exactly the right time for Jos to come back into the Test team.”Although I wouldn’t compare them because they are very different players and different people, in the same way it feels like the right time for Jason. He’s playing very well, growing and developing all the time and it’s an exciting prospect for us.”Jos Buttler drives through the covers•Associated Press
The question of whether Roy can adapt to the demands of Test matches and the spotlight of the Ashes speaks to a wider one about England. How, having invested so much time and effort into a four-year ODI campaign, might the team led by Joe Root find the right technical gears and mental reserves to succeed in the longest form of the game, against an Australian squad that, with a few World Cup exceptions, has enjoyed a far longer, more directed preparation.”Occasionally there is a real grand strategy and Andrew Strauss put in a good strategy when he came in in 2015,” Smith said. “We saw an incredibly unpredictable finale to a very thorough worked out strategic plan. It is not often a national sport organises itself to such clarity with a particular end. There is a challenge to build and grow on that rather than to say that is the full stop on the end of the sentence.”One thing we really want to do is develop this end of English cricket and not let it peter out but to push on from here. It is hard if you are moving things around as Andrew did, obviously certain things like the scheduling of the Championship has been bookended to the beginning and end of the season and that brings challenges for selectors.”However the same degree of attention, clarity and rigour we tried to bring to World Cup selection, we have also brought to Ashes selection. The balance is different because people are coming out of the World Cup with some injuries and tiredness and you are also looking at six Test matches in a short period of time in the second half of the summer, so that is a unique combination but that is part of the fun.”Should Roy fare anything like Pietersen 14 years ago, then the fun will be all England’s.
