Venâncio could prove to be a vital signing for Leeds if they can trump Yorkshire rivals

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Leeds have joined the race to sign Vitória Setébal defender Frederico Venâncio, who spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

What’s the story?

Venâncio, 25, has played at Vitória Setébal his entire career before his loan move to the Owls last season, where he made 22 appearances, scoring once.

The 6ft 1 powerhouse had an impressive spell at Hillsborough, so much so that Sheffield Wednesday are readying a bid of £875,000, according to A Bola.

However, Leeds are prepared to challenge their Yorkshire rivals for the Portuguese defender, although a bid is yet to be made by the Whites.

Why he should join Leeds

After a slow start, Venâncio had a really solid end to the season for the Owls, missing only two in 2018.

Leeds definitely need defensive reinforcements and considering Venâncio has already proven himself at this level, he would make a very shrewd addition to the team.

At 25, he is mature enough but with his best years ahead of him, and only Sheffield Wednesday stand in the way of Leeds securing the services of a defender with real quality.

If Leeds are successful in recruiting manager Marcelo Bielsa, they could really start to build something at the club and stop its stagnation, and Venâncio and Jansson could prove a strong centre back pairing.

With rumoured signings Abel Hernandez, Jack Marriott and Matthew Pennington potentially on their way to Elland Road, things could start to look very exciting indeed and Venâncio would be wise to join.

Venâncio is valued at £1.8million on Transfermarkt, so if Leeds can snatch him from their Yorkshire rivals at the current price, he could represent a real bargain.

Liverpool could catch Man City next season with sensational swoop for £40.5m-rated winger

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were disappointed by their club’s failure to sign Nabil Fekir recently, but they are eager to put their disappointment behind them and focus on alternative targets.

It appeared that Fekir was all set to move to Anfield last Friday but a potential deal swiftly collapsed and left Jurgen Klopp without his ideal replacement for Philippe Countinho. Having already added Naby Keita and Fabinho to his ranks this summer, it seems that Klopp is prioritising the signing of an attacking midfield player to support the likes of Salah, Firminho and Mane next season.

According to a recent report from Gazetta Dello Sport (via talkSPORT), Liverpool have not wasted any time in identifying a new attacking target to pursue this summer following their Fekir disappointment. The report claims that the Reds are interested in signing Fiorentina’s sought-after winger Federico Chiesa, although they will face competition from Manchester United and Manchester City in a deal which could set them back £62 million.

After watching Man City dominate the Premier League last season, Klopp will be looking for ways to narrow the gulf in class this summer, and adding quality talent to his attacking options would be a wise place to start. With little by way of back-up available in wide positions, the signing of Chiesa would solve a problem for Liverpool ahead of the new season and provide Klopp with a player who has the potential to become a future superstar in the Premier League.

After impressing at youth level with Fiorentina, Chiesa (valued at £40.5 million by Transfermarkt) was promoted to the senior squad at just 18-years-of-age in 2016, and he held his own in Serie A on his debut season in which he made 17 starts, scoring 3 and assisting 3 in the process. The 20-year-old’s positive progress continued into the most recent season as he demonstrated flair and creativity in abundance to provide a further 9 assists and score 6 goals in all-competitions, establishing himself as one of the most highly-rated youngsters on the continent in the process.

Considering both the progress he has made thus far and the fact he is only 20-years-old, it’s no surprise that Chiesa is commanding such a huge transfer fee, but if he continues to improve at an exponential rate there’s no doubt he would justify the fee in the years to come. With that in mind, Klopp should make him a primary target in the coming weeks as the scale of his impact on Merseyside could make all the difference in Liverpool’s bid to catch Man City at the summit of English football next season.

Liverpool fans – thoughts? Let us know below!

Revealed: Slight majority of Arsenal fans think club should sign Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has reportedly refused to commit his future to the club until after the 2018 World Cup, and we at Football FanCast suggested that Arsenal should make a move for the 6ft 3in powerhouse if he does leave their London neighbours.

The England international has been speaking about his future while on international duty with the Three Lions, and he suggested that he could look to move on unless he is guaranteed regular first-team football – something he didn’t get under Antonio Conte previously but did enjoy during a season-long loan spell with Crystal Palace last term.

The 22-year-old showed the quality he has on the ball during his time with the Eagles, and his link-up play with the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend there – and Marcus Rashford for Gareth Southgate’s men in the 2-0 win against Costa Rica last week – proved how good he already is and the huge potential he has.

He often played as an attacking midfielder or on the left-hand side for Roy Hodgson’s side, and he has the class and skill to form a telepathic understanding with players such as Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan at the Emirates.

We asked Arsenal fans to vote on our poll to see whether they would like to see the north London outfit sign Loftus-Cheek, and a slight majority 54% said they would.

Head of recruitment Sven Mislintat has already had a busy summer and will be expecting more new additions, but it remains to be seen whether the Chelsea man could be on his list at some stage in the near future.

Manchester City fans split over allowing Brahim Diaz to leave on loan

Brahim Diaz has been part of the Manchester City fold since 2013 when he joined their academy from Malaga.

The attacking midfielder, who can also play on either wing, worked his way through the Under-18s and Under-23s, but he is yet to break into the first team.

[ad_pod ]

That is not a huge shock considering that Diaz is only 18 years old, but he has shown promise in the development ranks.

Last season, the teenager scored six goals in 27 appearances, with four coming in the Premier League 2 and two in the UEFA Youth League.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255909″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Three reasons we love to hate… Germany”]

As well as finding the back of the net, the youngster created four assists, which has attracted the attention of Girona.

According to Spanish publication Sport, the club are trying to poach him for the second year running.

Diaz is currently represented by the brother of City manager Pep Guardiola, Pere, who also happens to be part-owner of Girona.

The publication states that the City boss would be happy for the teenager to leave on loan to gain more experience.

Some fans agree with that sentiment, while others want the midfielder to be given opportunities in the Premier League in the 2018-19 campaign.

Transfer tussle: Newcastle need to stop Wolves from signing midfield maestro

Newcastle United fans have gathered around the Transfer Tavern to hear some more news on their potential summer signings.

The Magpies need a couple of crucial additions to help push the club towards the European spots. Ideally, Rafael Benitez needs to strengthen his numbers going forward if he’s to improve on Newcastle’s tenth place finished. One player the Spaniard should be looking at is Wolves target, Juan Quintero.

The Breakdown

The midfielder has been a revelation in the World Cup and has been one of the key parts in Columbia’s impressive displays. As a result of his strong performances, the Mirror is reporting that Wolves are targeting the former Porto man. Wolves boss is apparently keen to use his Porto connection to lure Quintero to Molineux. The Columbian would be an incredible steal for Wolves but if Newcastle can, they should try to hijack the move.

In Benitez’s 4-2-3-1, Quintero would be a superb attacking 10. If Benitez can surround him with Joshua King and possibly a striker ahead of him, Quintero could blossom into one of the best-attacking talents in Europe.

Quintero has always had the potential but has never really delivered on it. It’ll be hard to prevent Wolves from using their Portuguese links and their ties to super agent Jorge Mendes but if Newcastle can sign the talented midfielder, it could well take them to the next level.

It’s an ambitious move, Newcastle fans but if Mike Ashley can pull this one off, the Magpies could have a serious talent on their hands.

Newcastle fans – do you want to sign him?

Will Tottenham star take a leaf out of Lacazette’s book on goal scoring?

Two young strikers took Europe by storm last season, Alexandre Lacazette and Harry Kane. Both burst onto the scene – though both showed signs of quality the previous season – and both, coincidentally, scored 31 goals last season in all competitions.

And both have had trouble living up to last season’s promise in the first weeks of the new season. Kane has yet to score for his club this season, and Lacazette has scored only once – a penalty this weekend .

A penalty seems like the perfect opportunity for a struggling striker to find the net and kickstart his season. After the thrill of seeing the ball bulge the net, Lacazette, like all great strikers, would acquire once again the taste for blood and rampage through the league over the next few weeks.

[ffc-gal cat=”tottenham” no=”5″]

But against Gent in midweek, it wasn’t like that. He was given the honour of taking the penalty right in the last few minutes against the 9-man Belgian minnows, with the game still tied at 1-1. Lacazette missed. In fact, it was a great save from the goalkeeper, but it was enough to send the media wild with stories about his decline. Just like Kane.

The truth is, Lacazette isn’t playing terribly. He’s still a threat, he looks dangerous even if he can’t find the net and he worries defenders – he’s a handful. Alexandre Lacazette is still part of Lyon’s attacking play and good moves come through him, just as they always did.

Kane is also in a similar place. Against Sunderland last week he failed to score, despite a fresh-air shot from all of four yards. And again against Crystal Palace, it was new teammate Heung-Min Son who found the net in a 1-0 win.

But it’s not like Kane has been anonymous. He has been involved in build-up play and he has been in position to score a few goals. Over the last few months the internet has been awash with stories about how Tottenham need a new striker to play alongside Kane and compliment his abilities, or else take some of the goalscoring load off his young shoulders and allow him to play his own game.

So just because Spurs have found a new goalscorer doesn’t mean that Kane is flopping this season: it just means Spurs have somebody who fulfills a need we all thought they had.

Just minutes after Alexandre Lacazette had scored his penalty, he was clean through on goal and with only the keeper to beat he did everything right: he lifted it over the onrushing keeper, without blasting it or doing anything silly. But the ball flew back off the post. And that’s been the story of his season so far.

That’s been the story of Kane’s season, too. Strikers need confidence, and so the first goal is always important. The confidence you glean from scoring is huge, but the confidence you get from scoring a penalty might be less than what you get from open play. You’re expected to score a penalty, it’s an ‘easy chance’.

But for the moment, we shouldn’t be too worried if Kane himself misses chances. If he gets a penalty he might score it and go on a run of scoring. If he gets a six-yard tap-in it might have the same result. Or he might hit the post instead.

Whatever happens, we should be more worried about whether he gets into goalscoring positions than whether he actually takes the chances. It’s a lot easier to rely on a spike in confidence and the ability to place the ball beyond a goalkeeper – an ability we know he has – than it is to rely on teaching him how to get into the positions in the first place.

Could this Serie A star really be on his way to West Ham this January?

Despite enduring a truly shocking performance from their side last time out against Watford, the Upton Park faithful have nonetheless experienced a very impressive start to the 2015/16 campaign watching West Ham this season.

The Hammers currently reside in sixth place, after recently enjoying a decent spell among the Premier League’s illustrious top-four positions. Yes, Leicester City may admittedly still be sitting in third at this current stage – but as Slaven Bilic’s side have beaten each of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea this term – West Ham fans have arguably had more to shout about so far.

In line with such a remarkable start to the campaign for the determined East-Enders, the Upton Park faithful don’t actually have to view the January transfer window as a desperate attempt to restore some strength in and around their team for once.

[ffc-gal cat=”west-ham” no=”5″]

Bilic has nonetheless been linked with several star names in 2015/16 however, including current AC Milan midfielder and Japanese international – Keisuke Honda.

So with such a bold transfer story in mind for Hammers fans this term, will the 2014 World Cup goal-scorer be on his way to the Boleyn Ground this January, or is this deal simply very unlikely to take place?

Well, perhaps if this particular move had been spoken of just a few short seasons ago, very few would have initially given it the time of day. Yet now – with the Hammers going about their business in as ambitious style as possible in the club’s last ever season at Upton Park – anything can seemingly happen at West Ham this campaign.

Whilst the creative midfielder apparently wanted out of the San Siro this summer amid reported interest from both Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, Slaven Bilic’s side could well benefit from the former CSKA Moscow man’s decision to remain in Serie A this term. He has experienced a rather inconsistent spell whilst operating with AC Milan – ultimately failing to reach the lofty heights many expected of the Japanese international when he first signed for the club in 2013.

Because of his recent dip in form, lack of re-sale value at 29-years-old, and reported availability for as little as £5million this season, West Ham could easily sign the midfielder with a view to improving their squad even further.

The new Hammers manager may already have several fringe-players on his hands that could well be incorporated within the club’s first team plans pretty soon – such as Mauro Zarate, Enner Valencia, Michail Antonio and the returning Alex Song – but with all those aforementioned factors in mind for the West Ham hierarchy, the potential signing of Keisuke Honda could well be seen as a viable option this campaign.

However, as both Carl Jenkinson and Aaron Cresswell have looked distinctly suspect in Slaven Bilic’s fresh approach down at Upton Park, perhaps the Hammers should arguably look to improve their full-back options before looking elsewhere this January. Each player has struggled with passing the ball out from the back this term, proving overtly untrustworthy of their weaker foot in each of their respective situations.

That said, because former AC Milan striker and Brazil international – Alexandre Pato – has also recently been linked with joining West Ham, maybe Bilic is targeting even more fire power this January in order to force his side up the Premier League table. With both Honda and Pato potentially on board at Upton Park – the possible attacking options available to the current Hammers manager could be lethal to say the very least.

Regardless of whatever happens at the club this January, though, West Ham are bound to enjoy the rest of the season under similarly impressive circumstances this term. The club already have a great squad in place for this season – yet with Keisuke Honda also potentially among the action at Upton Park this winter – the Hammers could well have sourced themselves the perfect icing on the cake.

Is this the year Tottenham finally finish above Arsenal?

There is always the trivial possibility that Spurs will finish higher than their North London rivals, although they always seem to fall short at the final hurdle. Therefore if history predictably repeats itself then this article will be deemed more futile than it already is. However Spurs will surely, eventually, finish above Arsenal in the future, so why not this season?

Tottenham’s promising early season form is a good place to start. Manager Mauricio Pochettino’s tinkering and tactics appear to have given Spurs a new lease of life; the emergence of Deli Ali and Eric Dier is testament to that. In fact, the current wealth of English talent Tottenham currently posses mirrors the spine of another top seven team, that made the leap from 7th to 2nd in two Premier League seasons. I am referring to the 2013/14 Liverpool team that very nearly won the title, finishing above Arsenal in the process (the Gunners predictably finished 4th).

Comparisons can be made all over the pitch with that team, Ali and Henderson, Kane and Sturridge, and, of course, Coutinho and Eriksen.

Nonetheless there is one glaring omission in this comparison – Luis Suarez. The influence Luis Suarez had on Liverpool was equal to that of Gareth Bale for Tottenham before his move to Real Madrid. Despite the appointment of Klopp, Spurs are ahead of Liverpool in terms of their recovery post star-player departure.

So that’s a possible scenario, Tottenham could replicate the unexpected nearly moment of Liverpool’s title charge. With good acquisitions in Son, N’Jie and Alderweireld, plus the possible return to form of Eric Lamela, it might just happen.

It’s also worth pointing out Tottenham’s consistency compared with the other front-runners in the Premier League this season, including Arsenal. Despite being three points behind the Gunners, Spurs are unbeaten in seven games, and have the momentum to defeat any opponent they come up against.

Fundamentally, despite Tottenham’s hypothetical title surge, Spurs will have to rely on an Arsenal relapse to assume any realistic hope of finishing ahead of their rivals in a Champions League position.

Now this is much more likely, given the annual autumn pressure Arsenal are currently enduring. The Gunners’ timely 3-0 victory against Manchester United has kept the critics at bay for the time being, but given Arsenal’s form in Europe, anything is possible. That’s not to say Arsene Wenger is going to be sacked – in fact it is in the interest of Tottenham if he does stay – Spurs just need to make sure they are ready to pounce when Arsenal do slip up.

Spurs, for the first time in Premier League history, need to be ruthless. 4-1 victories like the one enjoyed against Man City must become a weekly event. Tottenham’s high intensity and pressing game, complemented by the goal scoring abilities of Kane, Eriksen and Son, will surely propel them something close to title contenders.

If they can manage all that then Arsenal might just be playing catch up for the majority of the season.

Five things we learned from Arsenal’s huge win over City

In one of the biggest Premier League games of the season, Arsenal comfortably saw off Manchester City’s rather weak efforts.

City failed on the road once again, with Aguero not fully fit and Vincent Kompany unavailable, the Citizens’ defence continued to look wide open.

Arsene Wenger got his team selection spot on, Manuel Pellegrini did not, and, despite a Yaya Toure strike late on, Arsenal were comfortable, and deserving, winners.

Theo Walcott’s screamer started off Arsenal’s first half domination, whilst Kevin de Bruyne missed a sitter, Ozil picked up yet another assist as he slid in Olivier Giroud before half time.

Raheem Sterling’s introduction at half-time helped City get a foothold in the game, but it was all a bit of too little too late for the Sky Blues as we were left wondering why they didn’t play with such energy earlier.

Twice before Arsenal have been second in the PL at Christmas and both times previously they have gone on to become champions.

Yaya Toure is as big a liability as Fabregas

He scored a pearler, we know, but Yaya Toure provided another lazy central midfield performance. Cesc Fabregas might get by-passed in midfield, but Yaya is like a lampost whilst his central midfield partners run around.

His flair and skill is not in question, but Yaya’s burst of energy and decision to ‘run the game’ when City were chasing the game in the last twenty minutes makes it all the more annoying.

Manchester City may well have to accept that they can no longer play Yaya Toure in the biggest matches, or, at the very least, play Toure instead of David Silva.

Mesut Ozil making sure Arsenal aren’t missing Sanchez

This infographic needs a bit of updating after Ozil’s two assists in this game.

Ozil was not at his best this evening, but the Gunners’ magical number 10 is surely odds on to break the assist record now. His elegance can appear as laziness, but Ozil is, without question, the most creative player in the league and Arsenal will go a long way if they can keep him firing.

As wonderful as Alexis Sanchez was last season, Ozil’s performances have meant the fans haven’t missed the Chilean too much.

City can’t spend their way out of their Kompany woe

Despite the vulgar amount of money spent on both Mangala and Otamendi, City’s defence still parts like the red sea whenever the Belgian is out of the side.

Throughout the match we saw Arsenal cut the City defence open with the simplest of moves and City’s record without Kompany is as worrying for Pellegrini as it is positive for Ranieri and Wenger.

Until Kompany returns, City will need to score at least 3 to have any sense of security in a game.

Sterling or Navas need to start

City begun this game with both Sterling and Navas on the bench, ‘Why?!’ I hear you ask, I don’t know.

The way that Pellegrini set his side up lacked pace and playing two number 10s and Fabian Delph as your attacking midfield trio is always going to miss something. City’s attacks, as a result, were often slow and had no pace to launch a counter attack, let alone have anyone run in behind.

Ideally you may start both, but on an occasion like this, Sterling should’ve played on one wing, perhaps the selection of Delph was to compensate for Yaya Toure’s lack of work in midfield.

Joel Campbell deserves a new contract

Amongst Ozil and Giroud’s form, Joel Campbell’s impressive run of performances seem to have been somewhat overlooked.

The Costa Rican impressed yet again from the right flank with his power, pace and, despite Martin Tyler’s comments, technical ability. Campbell might not quite have the grace of Cazorla or Ozil, but the presence of a second winger gives the Arsenal side a balance that they lack when Aaron Ramsey or Mesut Ozil are deployed out wide.

Five last-minute deals Spurs could pull off before the close of the transfer window

We are now almost at the end of the January transfer window and it has so far been a massive disappointment when compared to all the hype it received in the tabloids during the final few months of 2015.

Indeed, despite pretty much every club in the Premier League requiring reinforcements in certain departments, only a collective 27 signings have been made so far – just half of which have joined teams in the top half of the table.

But now into the final week of the winter window, the pressure to spend will feel heavier than ever on the shoulders of under-fire managers and chairmen, so we could suddenly see the Premier League kick into action.

With that in mind, here are FIVE last-minute deals Tottenham Hotspur could pull off – some representing potential acquisitions and others seemingly inevitable departures – before the January transfer window officially slams shut at 11pm on February 1st.

SAIDO BERAHINO

The Saido-Berahino-to-Tottenham transfer saga has been going on as long as an Eastenders storyline. The Lilywhites were linked in January 2014, came good on their interest with a series of failed bids last summer and have been tipped to swoop once again this month.

Spurs need a dependable understudy to first-choice striker Harry Kane and the West Bromwich Albion prodigy still fits the bill better than most on the market. He’s young, home-grown, versatile and has proved his scoring credentials in the Premier League – netting 14 times in 38 appearances for the relegation-threatened Baggies last season.

Furthermore, the Midlands outfit seem more than happy to cash in. Amid accusations that the 22-year-old’s head was turned by Spurs’ failed £25million bid last summer, manager Tony Pulis has issued him just eight Premier League starts this season.

But that has created doubts over Berahino’s character and whether West Brom will actually sell to the north London club. Furthermore, they still value the Burundi-born striker at around £30million, despite just 18 months remaining on his Hawthorns contract.

SANDRO RAMIREZ

Barcelona prospect Sandro Ramirez has been heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane as a potential alternative to the admittedly costly and aforementioned Saido Berahino.

The 20-year-old is a more a winger-forward than an out-and-out frontman but boasts a respectable return of seven goals in 31 first team outings for the Catalans – including three Copa del Rey strikes this season – since his debut in August 2014.

With his contract due to expire in eighteen months, Barcelona are reportedly ready to part with the Spanish starlet, who boasts 19 goals in 24 appearances for his country at youth international level.

Ramirez is reportedly rated at around the £9million mark – an acceptable figure to take a punt on. But Barcelona want any deal to include a buy-back option, which could prove to be the ultimate stumbling block for the begrudging north Londoners.

ANDROS TOWNSEND

Having not featured in any competition since a Europa League outing in October and failed to register a full ninety minutes in the Premier League for almost two years, Andros Townsend is clearly surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane.

A number of clubs appear keen to take the England international off Spurs hands, most particularly Newcastle United, and he’s desperate to find first team football to improve his chances of making it into Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 squad – which right now are somewhere between slim and none.

But chairman Daniel Levy is refusing to budge on his £14million valuation of the 24-year-old, despite his lack of game-time this season and his Spurs contract being into its last 18 months, which has reportedly seen the Magpies end their interest following a failed £10million bid.

But there’s still a week of the transfer window remaining and likely to get even less for Townsend in the summer, the Tottenham chief could decide to lower his demands.

FEDERICO FAZIO

Federico Fazio came close to leaving White Hart Lane during the summer and having made just one appearance since – a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the Capital One Cup – logic suggests Spurs are more than happy to sell.

It simply hasn’t worked out for the Argentine in north London. He was sent off during his debut against Manchester City last season and never really recovered from there, lacking the pace required in the Premier League and often committing very costly individual errors.

Nonetheless, the 28-year-old still has a few selling points. He was a Europa League-winning captain with former club Sevilla and widely regarded as one of the better defenders in the Spanish top flight, so a suitor could emerge before the close of the January transfer window.

West Brom, who targeted the 6 foot 5 centre-back in the summer, have been linked once again whilst a return to La Liga is another possible scenario.

JAMES MADDISON

Seemingly spurred on by the phenomenal progress Dele Alli has made since arriving from MK dons during the summer, the Lilywhites are reportedly determined to land another League One prodigy in Coventry midfielder James Maddison.

Spurs targeted the 19-year-old during the summer window but failed to hatch a deal and are now working to bring him to White Hart Lane this month after a string of promising displays for the Ricoh Arena outfit – netting twice in eleven league outings so far this term.

The teenage playmaker is widely regarded as one of the Football League’s most promising talents and the north Londoners are hoping to secure his services before anybody else does – with Arsenal and Liverpool also keen – by signing him this January and loaning him back to Coventry for the remainder of the season.
