Celtic: Reporter shares transfer update he’s heard on "top" Parkhead target

Celtic are in the market to strengthen a key position in the January transfer window and an update has emerged regarding one of their reported targets, according to reports.

Celtic updates: Ryan Christie latest, Liel Abada, Johnston verdict

According to a Celtic transfer update from TEAMtalk, Bournemouth midfielder Ryan Christie is being targeted by Brendan Rodgers, who is a huge admirer of the Scotland international and could look to bring him back to Parkhead if he doesn't sign a new deal at the Vitality Stadium.

Christie spent five years in Glasgow between 2016 and 2021 before moving on to Bournemouth; however, he is out of contract at the Cherries in 2024 and could be available as a free agent. Nevertheless, Andoni Iraola is said to be pushing to try and extend the former Inverness Caledonian Thistle ace's stay on the South Coast.

In other news, Rodgers has revealed that he has sat down with winger Liel Abada to offer him support amid the ongoing conflict in his homeland, stating via The Daily Record:

"I’d flown back on the Sunday and I went to a charity game and I left that to go and pick up Liel and took him up to have a bit of food and just get to understand what he was thinking and the traumas he’s gone through and everything."

"I don’t pretend to care about my players, I genuinely care about them. I always think that helps them play to a better level. That’s the whole idea about taking him out for a bite to eat. He’s a football player but he’s 21 years of age and in a foreign country. It is a tough period for him. His father had been over with him for a month and he was going back the next day, so he’s had his girlfriend here and his father here. But, of course, his mum is still back there."

Meanwhile, pundit Stephen McGinn has signalled that Celtic winger Mikey Johnston should look to leave Parkhead to seek a new challenge due to finding first-team opportunities hard to come by at his boyhood club. When asked if Johnston can turn his career around at Celtic, McGinn stated:

"I honestly don’t. We have seen the turnaround of Liam Scales, a great example. Anthony Ralston and Greg Taylor, these guys. But I think Mikey Johnston is at that stage where he is playing for Ireland. He has had that loan out in Portugal. I met him a couple of times. He is a great lad. He showed great potential, at times, especially in Brendan Rodgers’ first spell. I think mixed through injuries. I just can’t see the opportunity will come, there are that many options."

Celtic transfer update – Andriy Lunin

According to a Celtic transfer update from Football Insider reporter Pete O'Rourke, it is said that the Hoops are now unlikely to sign Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who had been identified as a target for the Scottish Premiership champions in recent weeks.

The report states that the Ukraine international, who has previously been labelled as a "top goalkeeper" by Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, would prefer to move to the Premier League instead of joining Celtic and taking up a place between the sticks at Parkhead.

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.

A Joe Hart contract update from the same outlet has revealed that the Hoops are in talks with the veteran goalkeeper over extending his spell in Glasgow, which is set to end in the summer of 2024 when his current deal expires. Nevertheless, Rodgers is still keen to bring a new stopper to Celtic either in January or later next year, though, so this update on Lunin is a blow.

'I'm a big fan of taking away the toss' – Du Plessis

The South Africa captain thinks allowing the visiting team to always decide on whether they want to bat or bowl will bring back some balance to Test cricket

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Galle14-Jul-20180:57

No toss will add more balance to Test cricket – Du Plessis

The visiting team outclassed in unfamiliar conditions, twice being dismissed for less than 200; the match – barely competitive – hurtling to a conclusion inside three days. The above could describe either of South Africa’s two most recent matches against Sri Lanka. In Johannesburg last year, a South Africa attack featuring four frontline quicks had scythed through Sri Lanka twice to record a victory of an innings and 118 runs. Now, in Galle, Sri Lanka’s trio of spinners have dismissed South Africa for record-low totals to sweep to victory by 278 runs. These kinds of disparate results are why Test cricket should do away with the toss and instead allow visiting teams to choose whether to bat or bowl first, South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has said. South Africa have only recently become outspoken about creating made-to-order pitches at home, while New Zealand have also attempted to capitalise on their seam-bowling advantage by preparing very green tracks for Asian sides in recent years. In South Asia, meanwhile, teams have long produced tracks to suit themselves. These practices are why the ICC cricket committee recently considered doing away with the toss, before eventually deciding to keep it. Du Plessis, though, wants a toss-less Test future.”I’m a big fan of taking away the toss,” he said. “I think even in South Africa you’ll still prepare the conditions the way you prepare them now, but you just make sure that you bring some balance. In home conditions teams will still win the majority of the games, but you still do even it out a little. I think over the last two or three years away-records have definitely gone down, and games are finishing a lot sooner than they used to.”Matches have certainly grown shorter in Sri Lanka, which has just seen its 20th consecutive result Test – a record for any host nation. Spin played a major role in most of those Tests, with Sri Lanka preparing tracks to suit Rangana Herath in particular. New Zealand, meanwhile, have won 14 and lost only three of the 21 most-recent Tests they have played at home. India and Pakistan (who play their home games in the UAE) also have fearsome home records over the past five years, and are understood to also instruct curators to produce pitches that suit them.”When I started playing Test cricket, 400s and 500s were happening quite regularly,” du Plessis said. “So I’m not just speaking about subcontinent conditions. In South Africa games hardly reach the end of day four anymore. I think that’s one of the ways you can make sure that balance is a little better.”Du Plessis’ request to can the toss also comes amid teams finding ever more creative and intensive means with which to disadvantage an opposition. There have been several complaints in recent years that the pitches produced for practice matches the visiting teams play ahead of a series have been too dissimilar to the tracks encountered in the actual Tests. Du Plessis suggested the same had occurred in the ongoing series against Sri Lanka, and even hinted that South Africa should do the same.”We played a warm-up game in Colombo which was on a flat wicket – it didn’t spin. So you have to give credit to Sri Lanka for doing that well. That’s some learning in that to take when we’re playing in South Africa. The nets that we’ve been playing in haven’t been spinning at all. So we could have even come a month earlier but if you’re practicing on facilities that don’t spin, you’re not going to get what you get out there [in the Tests].”

Kelvyn chutou, a bola desviou e enganou Vanderlei.

Ratcliffe not messing around: Man Utd may land record Old Trafford deal

Manchester United could bring in record numbers at Old Trafford with what potential new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe is planning, according to finance expert Kieran Maguire.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe closing in on Man Utd deal

The Glazers put the Red Devils up on the market almost 12 months ago now, but we seem to be edging closer to a conclusion to the takeover saga. Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim have been the two main parties looking to do a deal with the current owners, and after the latter withdrew from the process earlier this month, Ratcliffe's Man Utd deal is set to be worth a 25% stake in the club. Ratcliffe’s plans at Man Utd appear to include expanding Old Trafford to a 90,000 stadium, and he is ready to accelerate that proposal, according to reports.

Maguire, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to Football Insider regarding the idea. The report states that Old Trafford brought in £111m in matchday revenue in 2021/22, the most in the Premier League, and should Old Trafford increase to 90,000, Maguire feels that number could grow to record-breaking numbers.

“If Man United built a new 90,000-capacity stadium, then there’s no reason why they could not increase their matchday revenue by at least 50 percent. They earn around £110million a season currently, so we would be looking at £170 to £180million in a new ground.

“The reason why I’d say that is because if you take a look at the prices that Spurs have charged their fans, there’s been a significant increase from White Hart Lane to their new venue. What I think we would also see with regards to Manchester United in an expanded 90,000 seater stadium is that hardly any of that increase in capacity would go to season ticket holders because they don’t generate enough money.

“Instead, the focus would be very much on corporate hospitality and day-trippers who are prepared to pay much more for individual match tickets. “They are far more likely to spend money on merchandise and catering programmes. So £180 million is certainly feasible.’"

How much is a ticket at Old Trafford?

Old Trafford currently holds just under 75,000 and is the largest club stadium in the country, so expanding it to 90,000 and making relative improvements would be a solid start by Ratcliffe.

It could also allow more supporters to watch the Red Devils in action, and as can be seen below, Man Utd ticket prices at Old Trafford, as provided by Goal, are relatively cheap compared to the likes of Aston Villa and West Ham.

Reporter shares Newcastle transfer news he’s heard alongside new midfielder

Newcastle United are pushing to sign a midfielder in the January transfer window, but their business may not stop there, according to a new claim from journalist Dean Jones.

Newcastle want Tonali replacement

The Magpies' primary focus in the transfer market at the moment appears to be on bringing in an ideal replacement for Sandro Tonali in January. The 23-year-old will be suspended from playing competitive football worldwide for the next 10 months, bringing an end to his first season in a Newcastle shirt before it has barely got going.

To lose the services of such an influential figure so soon after joining the club is an almighty setback for Eddie Howe to deal with, and while he still has strong midfield options to choose from, whether it be Bruno Guimaraes or Joelinton, a top-quality addition will now be required midway through the campaign.

There have been numerous players linked with coming in and making up for the loss of Tonali, with Newcastle backed to sign the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Ruben Neves and N'Golo Kante, and it would be a big surprise if they didn't snap up one midfielder, with a loan move looking like the most likely outcome.

It looks as though that may not be the only piece of business that happens at St James' Park for owners PIF during the winter window, however, following a fresh update regarding their transfer situation.

Newcastle transfer update alongside midfielder

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones said that Newcastle could look to sign a centre-back and a forward as well in January, rather than simply focusing on the midfield and Tonali's replacement:

"I don't expect massive additions to this Newcastle squad in the second half of the season. Speaking to a couple of people who are closer to the situation at Newcastle, it sounds like a centre-back will be the most likely addition to come in if they were to look down that route.

"There's a small, small chance of a forward coming in as well. Yeah, the priority would be to replace Sandro Tonali and then let's see what they can do."

This is an encouraging update to hear, suggesting that Newcastle's owners remain willing to provide Howe with the funds needed to bolster his squad, increasing their chances of securing a second consecutive top-four finish in the Premier League. While finding someone to fill in for the absent Tonali takes preference, centre-back could certainly be an area to look at, considering key man Sven Botman has suffered injury problems so far this season.

Jones alludes to there being a small chance another forward will come in, and having an extra option there cannot be a bad thing, should Alexander Isak or Callum Wilson suffer an injury or a loss of form, especially as the matches come thick and fast in the second half of the season.

Next summer feels like the more logical time to make noticeable additions to Newcastle's squad, but if the right players are available in January, Howe and PIF could make their move.

Grounds to bid for teams in South Africa's T20 competition

The partnership that CSA entered into with SuperSport could also be at risk, and the board is at risk of heavy financial losses if the tournament is postponed again

Firdose Moonda17-Aug-2018

A view of the Wanderers Stadium•BCCI

South Africa’s stadiums have had to submit bids to host a team in the new, yet-to-be-named T20 tournament by Friday. Six venues will be chosen after an independent process by analytics agency Nielsen Sports, who will present their preferences to CSA’s board. The six venues will correspond to the six teams that will play in the competition – for example if the Wanderers is chosen, a team from Johannesburg will feature in the new tournament. No other specifics of the competition have been made public yet, but CSA CEO Thabang Moroe will meet with the board over the weekend to iron out some details.High on the agenda will be the partnership with the broadcaster SuperSport, which was announced as an equity partner in the new tournament in June, to an uproar from the original GLT20 owners. Four of those owners – Durban Qalanders, Bloem City Blazers, Nelson Mandela Bay Stars and Pretoria Mavericks – have threatened CSA with legal action, with owners reserving their rights to teams. When Moroe, along with CSA Acting COO Naasei Appiah, and board members Iqbal Khan and Louis von Zeuner, met with the GLT20 owners last week, they said they could reconsider the deal with SuperSport and also that they would get back to the owners in 10 days. One owner told ESPNcricinfo that the terms of CSA’s agreement with SuperSport had not yet been agreed, and the contract was not considered finalised.ESPNcricinfo understands that there is now a possibility that SuperSport could pull out of the equity deal and remain in a broadcast capacity only, opening the door for the teams to be privately owned. CSA could face major losses if the tournament goes ahead with SuperSport forgoing its 49% equity share and the continuing opposition from within the board towards private ownership. However, postponing the competition again will have a similar financial stain on CSA, leaving the organisation scrambling over how to pull the event off.In the meantime, CSA have not released any details of domestic fixtures for the new season, which is about a month away. Franchises have received tentative schedules, with the first-class competition set to start at the end of September. A franchise twenty-over tournament is also on the calendar, which means CSA will host two (three if you count the Africa T20 Cup) twenty-over tournaments in the 2018-19 season.
