Varun Aaron had an IPL economy rate of 8.79 across 39 matches prior to this game and despite two average outings this season, he was persisted. His erratic lengths, often on the shorter side, were perfect for batsmen looking to exploit the shorter legside boundary.Billings hit Aaron for three successive fours in his first over – two pulls and a flick behind square leg. Then Iyer hit him for two fours in three deliveries soon after Nair’s dismissal. A day before the end of IPL 2017, the BCCI has announced that the tender process for the next cycle of IPL television and digital rights will commence on July 17. The rights will be awarded for five years after the current rights expire at the end of this edition of the tournament.Presently, Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI) holds the television rights, while Star India is in possession of the digital and overseas media rights. The BCCI had opened the tender process in September last year, but the process then stalled as the tussle between the Lodha Committee and the board continued.The IPL governing council, according to a BCCI release, finalised the timelines for various tender processes for the IPL at a meeting in Hyderabad on Saturday, “after due deliberation with the concurrence of the Committee of Administrators [CoA]”. “I’m pleased that both the governing council and CoA members have finalised the timelines for the next rights period,” IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla said. “The early announcement will also help the prospective bidders/service providers to prepare well.”Vinod Rai, the chairman of the CoA – which was appointed by the Supreme Court of India in January to supervise the BCCI till it fell in line with the Lodha recommendations – also expressed confidence about “the process” and said he “would like to assure all prospective participants the highest level of transparency and accountability”.As opposed to this arrangement of a five-year contract cycle across media platforms, the media rights tender opened in September had offered television rights for a period of ten years while digital and overseas media rights were awarded for five years. BCCI CEO Rahul Johri had said then that the BCCI wanted to continue with the existing model, by which SPNI held the television rights from 2008 to 2017. “In our country, television is very well established,” he had said. “If you look at most cricket tenders, eight years-ten years have been the norm. That’s why we went for ten years. The area where trends are changing very fast is digital. That’s why we have reduced digital to five years.” At that point, major non-television entities such as Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and Reliance Jio were among the 18 companies that had shown interest in the rights.Now, the governing council also announced that the invitation to tender for the title sponsorship of the IPL will begin on May 31. The two-year agreement of Vivo, the current title sponsor, will come to a close at the end of the ongoing edition of the IPL. The governing council members also decided to float the Request for Proposal (RFP) for the IPL Event Services contract on June 12.

According to The Sun on Sunday (16/7; page 61), the Saints are one of the teams eyeing up Sunderland centre-forward Ross Stewart during the summer transfer window.

The report claims that Russell Martin's side are plotting a swoop to sign the Scottish finisher in the event of one of the manager's current number nine options moves on over the coming weeks.

It states that fellow second-tier teams Middlesbrough and Stoke City are also keen on securing his signature, as the ex-Ross County star's contract at the Stadium of Light is due to expire at the end of the season.

Burnley, Nottingham Forest, and Everton are all reportedly interested in snapping up Southampton striker Che Adams, who has been valued at £15m, and this could open the door for another marksman to come in.

The Scotland international averaged a phenomenal Sofascore rating of 7.40 across 13 Championship matches, which is a score only two players throughout the division managed to better, as the talented hotshot plundered ten goals to go along with three assists.

Adams, meanwhile, is coming off the back of scoring five goals in 28 Premier League games and has never hit double figures for strikes in the top flight.

He did, however, catch the eye with his Championship performances for Birmingham during the 2018/19 campaign. The 27-year-old ace averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.11 across 46 outings to go along with his 22 goals and four assists prior to his move to Southampton.

This means that the Scottish forward averaged a direct goal contribution every 1.77 games on average in his last season at that level, which is unimpressive in comparison to Stewart's sublime return of one every match on average.

These statistics suggest that the Sunderland star has the quality to be a significant upgrade on Adams as his sensational form for the Black Cats has proven that he has what it takes to be a prolific scorer in the second tier.

Stewart's Championship performances and impact at the top end of the pitch have dwarfed the current Saints number nine's achievements at that level, which is why replacing the ex-Birmingham man with his compatriot could be a shrewd piece of business by Martin this summer.

Celtic officially confirmed their third and fourth signings of the summer transfer window on Monday as Brendan Rodgers continued to bolster his squad.

Who have Celtic signed this summer?

Prior to this week, the Scottish giants had brought in Norwegian maestro Odin Thiago Holm and Australia international Marco Tilio on permanent deals.

They were joined by winger Hyun-jun Yang and defensive midfielder Hyeok-kyu Kwon at the start of this week, as both players arrived from South Korea for undisclosed fees.

That does not appear to be the end of the club's business, however, as the Hoops are now reportedly set to sign central defender Maik Nawrocki from Polish side Legia Warsaw in a deal worth £4m, according to some reports.

How good is Maik Nawrocki?

The 22-year-old titan enjoyed an excellent 2022/23 campaign and his statistics suggest that the potential is there for him to be an excellent centre-back for Celtic.

In fact, Rodgers could form a fearsome defensive duo by signing Nawrocki to play behind new recruit Kwon, who can also play in a holding role ahead of the Poland U21 international.

The Legia enforcer played 25 league matches last term and caught the eye with 1.3 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game for his side. Meanwhile, no Hoops centre-back made more than 0.9 tackles or 1.2 interceptions per outing during the Scottish Premiership season.

This suggests that the £4m-rated star, who was once hailed as a "revelation" by scout Jacek Kulig, could be an outstanding option for the Northern Irish tactician in that area of the pitch in terms of his ability to cut out opposition attacks with vital interventions to retrieve possession for the team.

Kwon is a player who has arrived at Parkhead with similar qualities as a defensive midfielder.

During the K League 2 campaign this year, the 22-year-old battler made 1.9 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per appearance over the course of 19 games.

No Celtic midfielder managed more than 1.5 tackles or one interception per match last season, which means that the former Busan IPark warrior could be an exceptional option for Rodgers to call upon as a number six.

His combative nature in the middle of the park could be crucial in big games, against Rangers and in Champions League matches, as the Hoops may not dominate possession as they do in regular Premiership games.

They averaged 72.5% possession throughout the 2022/23 league campaign, which shows that they had the majority of the ball, whereas they only averaged 44% possession in their European adventures.

This suggests that having players who have the quality to disrupt the opposition whilst also being able to win the ball back on a regular basis throughout games could be crucial to the club thriving in Champions League ties.

Celtic finished bottom of their group in the competition and failed to win any of their six matches, which is why the signing of Kwon and the potential addition of Nawrocki could be pivotal pieces of business this summer to strengthen the backbone of the side.

Opposition attackers could fear the two defensive enforcers as they both have the potential to be imposing figures for forwards to see as they attempt to run through the middle of the pitch.

West Ham United have plenty of money to play with in the remaining weeks of the transfer window after landing £105m through the sale of Declan Rice.

However, with just three weeks to go until the new Premier League season begins, it appears that the Irons may be getting desperate in their search for new recruits.

Who are West Ham United's strikers?

While a midfield replacement for Rice is a priority for Moyes, West Ham could also do with strengthening in various other positions, not least up front.

United spent £35.5m to sign Gianluca Scamacca from Sassuolo last summer, but the Italian striker failed to make the impact expected of him in his debut campaign at the London Stadium.

Other than Scamacca, David Moyes has just Danny Ings, Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen and Said Benrahma to call upon in attack – hardly the most prolific list of goalscorers.

A number of potential options have emerged for West Ham in the striking department, with AC Milan striker Divock Origi the latest on the list.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness, the club have held talks with the Italian side over a possible deal.

How many goals has Divock Origi scored?

Origi joined Serie A giants Milan on a free transfer last year after bringing an end to his seven-season stay at Liverpool, with whom he became a fan favourite.

The Belgium international had a knack of scoring important goals, but a return of 22 from 107 Premier League appearances was hardly much to shout about.

That has been a similar story at the San Siro, having netted only twice – while assisting another – in 27 league appearances for Milan. Origi's slow start led to him being labelled Serie A's worst signing last season by Italian journalist Alvise Cagnazzo.

A change of surroundings has not exactly led to a change of fortunes for Origi, and it begs the question of exactly why Moyes' men would want to bring him on board.

Indeed, with 0.15 non-penalty goals per 90 minutes over the past year, Origi ranks in the bottom 10% of all forwards across Europe's top five leagues, as per FBref. Scamacca does not fare much better in that regard, mind, as he is in the bottom 17% with 0.24 non-penalty goals per 90.

Moyes would surely be better off putting his faith in Scamacca, who was often unfairly left out of the side at times last season, as the former Sassuolo ace not only scores at a better rate than Origi (0.29 v 0.18 goals per 90 respectively), but he also comes out on top in various other metrics.

That includes goals per shot (0.10 v 0.07), aerial duels won (44.7% v 30.6%) and tackles and interceptions per 90 combined (1.36 v 0.88) – an increasingly important trait for a forward – while they are pretty much identical in terms of pass-completion percentage (66.7 for Scamacca; 66.3 for Origi).

Previously described as a "terrible" player by football reporter Leigh Curtis, it is difficult to see how 28-year-old Origi – on wages of £85,000 a week, according to Capology – can improve West Ham's attack.

Instead, Moyes would be better off biding his time in search of the right man, even if that means taking his search right down to the wire.
