Sky Sports Share Man United Takeover News

Sky Sports have confirmed that a Manchester United takeover is no closer to completion, despite recent rumours of a deal involving Sheikh Jassim.

What’s the latest Man United takeover news?

It has been an eventful few days when it comes to Old Trafford takeover rumours, with speculation from Qatar suggesting that Jassim was successful in his bid to take full control from the Glazers.

As to be expected, that claim gathered plenty of attention in the media as claims emerged on both sides of the story, with journalist Ben Jacobs for example one of those arguing against the rumours on an agreement being reached, saying on Tuesday morning:

"Lots of speculation on the MUFC sale process, and an out-of-hours stock price surge reacting to that. But as of last night no group had been informed they are successful. Not expecting anything public or groundbreaking in the next few days. If that changes will update you."

Sky Sports have now confirmed that it was in fact Jacobs in the right and not the reports sending United fans wild, with chief reporter Kaveh Solekhol sharing news from “sources”. He said on Tuesday evening that the rumours regarding Jassim are false, adding:

"Man United fans will want an update on what is happening with a takeover. Is anything happening? Are we closer to any resolution?

"We’ve checked with all sides, with all our sources, and they’re telling us no update at the moment."

Jassim already planning Man United transfers?

Although Jassim is unaware if his fifth and final bid has been successful to take charge in Manchester, he already appears to be eyeing up a marquee signing for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Recent reports have claimed that the Qatar group are planning a stunning move for Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe. Jassim feels that the French superstar “belongs at Man United”, with PSG valuing the player at £170m.

However, with the transfer window now officially open, every passing day without a takeover resolution could impact United’s plans in the market. For example, back in March, some inside Old Trafford were worried that the ongoing saga would affect the club's planning in the window.

Hopefully, there will be a development soon for either Jassim or Sir Jim Ratcliffe, but no off-field news continuing could spell trouble for the Red Devils and cause unrest among the club's supporters.

Timil five-for, Taylor century sees USA steamroll Oman

A roundup of the third day’s action at ICC World Cricket League Division Four in Los Angeles

Peter Della Penna in Los Angeles 02-Nov-2016Legspinner Timil Patel’s second five-wicket haul of the tournament was followed by a devastating century by captain Steven Taylor as USA crushed Oman by eight wickets at Wright Cricket Field. The win put USA in the driver’s seat for one of the two promotion berths available at WCL Division Four while Oman’s promotion chances were dented not only by the loss, but also by USA’s chase of 164 in only 29.3 overs, which wrecked Oman’s net run rate.Taylor sent Oman in to bat on an overcast morning, giving debutant fast bowler Ali Khan the new ball. Ali, contracted by Guyana Amazon Warriors, had missed the first two games due to a left hamstring injury and clearly was still not 100%. He started off with a wide on a shortened run-up of just 12 paces, but on the last ball of the first over, he bowled the dangerous Zeeshan Maqsood through the gate with an inswinger for a duck.Khan laboured through the rest of his six-over opening spell but managed to nab Arun Poulose with a sharp return catch for 18, to leave Oman at 29 for 2. It was one of the few catches USA held on to over the next 12 overs; they missed six chances on the day.Swapnil Khadye benefited most from USA’s sloppy fielding, surviving a run-out chance and a drop at cover on 21 in the space of three deliveries, in the 20th over by Danial Ahmed. Khadye eventually added 46 runs with Khawar Ali before Elmore Hutchinson broke the partnership, getting Khawar to edge a drive to Akeem Dodson behind for 22. Khadye was bowled for 36, beaten in flight by Taylor’s offspin. With the middle order exposed, Timil was brought into the attack in the 32nd over and struck in the 34th, getting Zeeshan Siddiqui caught at deep midwicket for 22. Jatinder Singh and Amir Ali both fell attempting to slog Timil over midwicket only for Taylor to take brilliant catches at cover. Timil then trapped Ajay Lalcheta in front for his fourth wicket before Mohammad Nadeem’s leading edge went to Taylor to complete the five-for. Alex Amsterdam had Munis Ansari caught on the boundary at long-on two balls into the final over to wrap up the innings. The last time Taylor faced Oman at 2013 WCL Division Three in Bermuda, he was yorked for a second-ball duck by Ansari. On this occasion however, Taylor saw off the new ball with confidence and held firm after the early loss of Fahad Babar.Taylor moved to a sedate 12 off 20 balls before showing his menace in the eighth over against Ansari. He flicked the bowler off his hips for six before angling an attempted yorker behind point for four more. Ansari finished wicketless for the third successive match in the tournament. Taylor drove Amir’s offspin over mid-on for his seventh four in the 16th over and tapped a single to cover next ball to bring up his fifty in 44 balls.Taylor took the same number of deliveries to move from a fifty to a century, but gave two chances along the way. The first was on 66, an inside-edge in left-arm spinner Lalcheta’s first over that popped up off his pads in the region of silly point. Khadye bolted from behind the stumps and dived but the ball slipped through his gloves. On 90, Taylor edged Maqsood to Jatinder at slip but a sharp chance was spilled. One ball later, he slog-swept Maqsood over deep square leg to go to 96 and brought up three figures in the following over off Lalcheta with a crisp cover drive.Jersey kept their slim promotion hopes alive with a three-wicket win at Severn Cricket Field over Italy, who fell squarely in the relegation zone after their third consecutive loss. Jersey’s next match is against Bermuda on Wednesday where the winner will go to 2-2 and have an outside chance of promotion while the loser will fall to 1-3 and be in danger of relegation.Sent into bat, Italy made 235 with the top score from Gian Meade who scored 61 after being promoted to No. 3, and added 66 with Alessandro Bonora for the third wicket.Italy were on track for 250, having reached 211 for 5 by the 45th over with Carl Sandri and captain Damian Crowley well set. Anthony Hawkins-Kay struck a crucial blow in the 46th over, bowling Sandri for 40 off 32 balls to end a 91-run stand. It sparked a slide of six for 23 with the lower order collapsing. Offspinner Rhys Palmer plucked out two of those wickets and ended with 3 for 57 while Crowley fell for 58 in the 49th over to Ben Kynman, after which the pair got into a verbal exchange, one of several heated moments in the match.Man-of-the-Match Nat Watkins opened Jersey’s chase and top-scored with 77 off 101 balls. He added 64 with Luke Gallichan for the second wicket and then added another 75 for the third wicket with Jonty Jenner before he was stumped off Sandri. Will Harris’ hit-wicket dismissal off Sandri’s bowling nearly pulled Italy back into the game while Meade ran out Hawkins-Kay in the 39th to make it 167 for 5.Italy then struck twice in the space of three balls to remove Jenner for 65 and Charles Perchard for a first-ball duck, leaving Jersey needing 44 to win off 40 balls. Corey Bisson calmly saw the side home with an unbeaten 42 off 31 balls, hitting the winning single with three balls to spare.Corey Bisson roars after completing the winning run for Jersey to get past Italy by three wickets•Peter Della Penna

Bermuda got their first win of the tournament, beating Denmark by 38 runs at Wong Cricket Field to keep the tournament wide open heading into round four. This was Denmark’s first loss in the tournament. Sent in to bat, Bermuda posted 221 for 7 and were boosted by the arrival of Delray Rawlins, who had missed the first two matches while training with the England Under-19 squad across the Atlantic. Rawlins made a top score of 39 batting at No. 3, sharing in a 71-run second-wicket stand with captain Oliver Pitcher.Offspinner Bashir Shah took two wickets to stay tied with USA’s Timil on the tournament wickets list, with 10 dismissals in three games. His double-strike removed Steven Bremar and Curt Stovell in consecutive overs and pinned Bermuda down at 161 for 7 in the 40th. Jordan DeSilva and Dennico Hollis, however, held Denmark’s bowling at bay with a valuable 60-run unbroken stand for the eighth wicket. Denmark also paid for a sloppy effort in which they conceded 36 extras, including 26 wides.Man-of-the-Match DeSilva and Cejay Outerbridge each took two wickets in the first six overs to leave Denmark floundering at 21 for 4 and Bermuda struck regularly thereafter. Denmark were struggling at 106 for 6 in the 31st over with the wicket of Zameer Khan who top-scored with 47.Denmark then switched their strategy to batting out the 50 overs to limit the damage to their net run rate, following Oman’s heavy loss. The last two wickets added 62 before DeSilva finished off the match, getting Basit Raja caught at long-on before bowling Yasir Iqbal one ball into the 49th over. DeSilva ended with returns of 4 for 23 as Denmark were bowled out for 183.In the next round on Wednesday, a win for USA over Denmark could clinch promotion into Division Three with a game to spare in the league stage, while Oman are scheduled to take on winless Italy at Wong.

Newcastle United Consider Approach For £4.2m-Rated Youngster

Newcastle United have an EFL talent on their radar radar it seems, with The Sun reporting that they are prepared to make a bid to bring in Josh Griffiths from West Brom.

Who is Josh Griffiths?

The goalkeeper has yet to test his luck in the Premier League, having played only in the Championship, League One and League Two over the course of his career so far. He has worked his way up through the divisions well though, initially joining Cheltenham on loan from West Brom. He helped guide them to a fourth tier title, managing 44 league games and conceding only 37 times along the way. That led to a move up into the third tier with Lincoln, where he once more played a prominent role. Whilst not as successful, a further 33 league outings gave him valuable League One experience.

He was then shipped back out on loan to League One with Portsmouth. After 22 more fixtures (with 27 goals conceded) in the 2022/23 season, he was given a short opportunity in the first-team of his parent club. Over the last 365 days, he sits in the top 17% for clean sheet percentage amongst other 'keepers in the Men's 'Next 8' competitions (those after the big five European leagues).

Now, it appears as though he may be gifted the chance to try his luck in the Premier League. That's because according to a report from The Sun, Newcastle are considering a bid to sign the shot-stopper as they look to bolster their ranks at the back. He may not be a starter for them but he is seen as a potential back-up for Nick Pope, and key club figure Dan Ashworth is a personal admirer.

What is Josh Griffiths' transfer value?

There is no official bid on the table yet and there is no potential fee spoken about yet either. However, CIES Football Observatory suggest that Griffiths' value lies around the 5 million Euros mark (or £4.2m). Considering the riches Newcastle now have, that could be a drop in the ocean to them for a player with a potentially bright future.

He's already a highly regarded player in the Championship – his current boss Carlos Corberan stated that Griffiths is playing "like a Premier League goalkeeper" already despite his age. It means that there might not be too much for the shot-stopper to work on and he may not struggle to adapt either – meaning he could eventually make a very suitable number one if Newcastle do sign him.

ECB reveals details on floodlit Championship

English cricket’s groundbreaking first full round of floodlit County Championship fixtures will be staged on June 26 next season, only five days after the summer solstice

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Nov-2016English cricket’s groundbreaking first full round of floodlit County Championship fixtures will be staged on June 26 next season, only five days after the summer solstice. The details are revealed in the full fixtures for the 2017 county season which also includes more weekend Championship cricket, the NatWest T20 Blast moving to a midsummer block and the last day of the Championship season pushed back to September 28.The experiment forms part of a crammed season in which England also stages the Champions Trophy in June and features an international schedule that runs from Ireland’s visit on May 5 until an ODI against West Indies at the Ageas Bowl as late as September 29. The Women’s World Cup also takes place in England in July.Whether floodlit Championship cricket has any success in widening the fan base remains to be seen, but one thing that can be assured is that it will not bankrupt the counties because of excessive electricity bills. With sunset not until around 9.20pm in late June, the floodlights will probably only be used for the final session. The announcement breaks new ground for the County Championship, which has only featured one previous day-night match – a trial game between Kent and Glamorgan at Canterbury in 2011.The ECB hopes to stimulate new interest in the Championship, although of more relevance perhaps is the opportunity for England players to experience the conditions before Edgbaston hosts the inaugural floodlit Test in the UK, between England and West Indies between August 17-21.With West Indies also getting a trial run under lights ahead of the Edgbaston Test, against Derbyshire from August 11-13, it means that 10 of the 18 first-class counties will stage day-night fixtures with pink balls next summer.Dukes pink balls will be used – the regular make of ball for international cricket in England – even though many of the experiments over the past decade have been with the Kookaburra ball, which is normally held to be less receptive to swing.Tom Harrison, the ECB’s chief executive, who confirmed the floodlit experiment last month, said: “We were excited to announce a few weeks ago that Edgbaston will be staging an historic day-night Test, and it’s great that the counties, and the Specsavers County Championship, can also get involved.”It was important for us to arrange a full round of fixtures to give our England players the chance to experience the conditions. But just as we wanted to assess the impact of making Test cricket more accessible by changing the hours of play, the counties have really embraced the potential of Championship matches that stretch well into the evening when people have finished school or work.”The early indications from Edgbaston are that day-night Test cricket is proving very popular, and hopefully it will be the same for the Championship now the fixtures are confirmed. It will be fascinating to see how it works out.”Canterbury was not overly wowed by the only previous floodlit county match•PA Photos

In the latest tweak to the county schedule, seven Championship rounds begin on a Friday in 2017, meaning a significant increase in the amount of weekend Championship cricket. The season begins on April 7 and the final round of matches does not begin until September 25.Essex, last year’s Division Two champions, begin their first Division One season since 2010 with a home game against Lancashire, while Andrew Gale will have home advantage at Headingley against Hampshire – spared from relegation by Durham’s punishment for falling into debt – in his first match as Yorkshire’s coach.Middlesex, who won their first Championship title since 1993 in such thrilling circumstances by beating Yorkshire at Lord’s in September, are not in action until the second round of matches, starting on Friday April 14, when they visit Hampshire. The long-running debate over the future of professional T20 cricket in England also takes another twist as the NatWest T20 Blast reverts to a block of fixtures. It will begin on July 7 and dominate the next seven weeks of the county season, with teams contesting 14 group matches in a concentrated period in high summer rather than spread over three months as previously. With emphasis turning entirely to T20 as the schools break up, no Championship matches are scheduled for almost four weeks during that period. The success, or otherwise, of the new format, may provide political ammunition in the long-running debate about whether an eight-team city league would be the saviour for an English professional game with combined debts of £150m (although the ECB has roughly half that in reserve) or whether it would shrink the game by forcing some counties into irrelevance and bankruptcy. The top four in each of the North and South groups will again qualify for the Blast quarter-finals, which will be played on four consecutive evenings from August 22-25 ahead of Finals Day at Edgbaston on September 2.The Royal London Cup is brought forward to early season, with all the group matches completed before the Champions Trophy in June. A change to the format will see the top two from each group go straight into the semi-finals, with the second- and third-placed teams contesting a pair of play-offs. One outcome that should be widely welcomed is that the Lord’s final takes place on July 1.

Newcastle Could Sign Their Own Jurrien Timber At St James’ Park

Newcastle United are interested in signing Feyenoord centre-back David Hancko this summer as manager Eddie Howe looks to bolster his squad after an immense season in the Premier League.

What's the latest on David Hancko to Newcastle?

That's according to French publication Foot Mercato, who claim that the Magpies have 'inquired' over the Slovakian's availability following Feyenoord's triumphant Eredivisie campaign, winning the league for the first time since 2017.

It's said that Newcastle technical director Dan Ashworth has taken information on the matter and will assess the club's options before deciding whether to lodge a formal offer.

The Dutch champions signed the 25-year-old for just one year ago, but the player's expected transfer value currently sits at just £7m.

Who is David Hancko?

It is no coincidence that Hancko's arrival at De club aan de Maas coincided with their return to silver-laden prominence, and after making 50 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and supplying five assists, the 27-cap international has certainly been the centrepiece of a "successful" season – as he has been described by analyst Kabat Marek.

Ranking among the top 1% of centre-backs across Men's Next 8 divisions – below the top European five – for assists, shot-creating actions and progressive passes, the top 2% for progressive carries and the top 3% for tackles per 90, as per FBref, Hancko could well be Newcastle's immediate answer to Jurrien Timber, who looks poised to join Arsenal.

According to Sky Sports' Florian Plettenberg, the Gunners are "on the verge" of completing a deal for Ajax's star centre-back, who has been hailed as "special" by talent scout Antonio Mango and could emerge as one of English football's new standout stars.

Timber is listed as a comparable player to Hancko on FBref and it's easy to discern why. The Dutchman ranks among the top 1% of positional peers for pass completion, progressive passes and progressive carries, the top 6% for successful take-ons, the top 3% for shot-creating actions and the top 16% for assists per 90.

Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber.

Signing the £15k-per-week Hancko is surely a brilliant move for Howe to make as he looks to consolidate the Magpies' position as a new European force, matching Arsenal in their new defensive addition and ensuring that territory is not ceded – indeed, next year the onus will be on leapfrogging the north London giants and edging closer towards a title challenge.

Hancko is a top "talent" – as he has been called by Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna – and given that the dynamic defender can also play on the left side of the defence, he would surely be a brilliant signing to aid Newcastle in their continuing ascension.

Gandhi's maiden ton lifts Gujarat to 300

Chirag Gandhi’s maiden first-class ton kept Gujarat afloat after their top order failed on the first day of the Irani Cup against Rest of India

The report by Arun Venugopal in Mumbai20-Jan-2017
ScorecardChirag Gandhi’s unbeaten 136 carried Gujarat’s total to 300•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

After the big guns failed to fire, Chirag Gandhi’s unbeaten maiden first-class hundred kept Gujarat afloat on a day where the Rest of India seamers, led by Siddarth Kaul and Pankaj Singh, dominated. While Rest of India were frustrated by an unbroken 39-run stand for the ninth wicket between Gandhi and Hardik Patel, they would be pleased with the day after Gujarat elected to bat.’Could play the shots I couldn’t in Ranji’ – Gandhi

Chirag Gandhi said a blank mind helped him bat freely after he scored his maiden first-class hundred in the Irani Trophy. “I had to enjoy today’s batting because it was the last match of the four-day season,” he said. “I could play whatever shots I couldn’t play in the knockout or league stages of the Ranji Trophy as there was a lot of pressure. I just played my game today, and I didn’t know when I finished with a hundred.”
Gandhi also said he had learnt to adapt to batting in the middle order. “I am also learning how to finish games in the shorter format. I had a word with Mahi bhai [MS Dhoni] during the semi-final. He told me it was about calculating which bowler you will target.”
Gandhi had also hit the winning runs that sealed Gujarat’s maiden Ranji title. “Everyone says that even if you watch the [highlights] down the line, it is my winning shot that will come on TV. That is a good feeling.”

On a pitch that had adequate bounce and lateral movement, the seamers whipped off Gujarat’s top four for less than 100. But, Gandhi and Manprit Juneja hit back with a 109-run stand for the fifth wicket, and ensured Gujarat’s innings didn’t wither away altogether.Gujarat’s top-three run-getters in this season’s Ranji Trophy were packed off by Pankaj and Kaul in the first session. Pankaj hassled Samit Gohel in the first over of the match with a scrambled sequence of inswingers and outswingers.Gohel seemed unsure of which way the ball was moving and even left one that came back perilously close to the off stump. Pankaj followed it up with a delivery that curved away, before getting the last ball of the over to jag back in and trap Gohel in front. Priyank Panchal, the highest run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy, and Dhruv Raval (39) restored calm with some positive strokes during the course of their 55-run partnership. It took a fine delivery from Pankaj to dislodge Panchal – the ball pitched on middle and off and seamed away and the outside edge was caught by Karun Nair at first slip. After a tight first spell, Kaul came back for a threatening second spell of 7-2-23-2, with two wickets coming on either side of lunch.First, captain Parthiv Patel departed in the midst of a developing partnership. In the penultimate over before lunch, Parthiv attempted to punch Kaul off the back foot, but the ball was closer to his body than he anticipated and the resultant inside-edge found the stumps. In the first over of the second session, Raval, who had played a few attacking shots in the morning, dangled his bat at an away-going delivery from Kaul and was caught behind.Siddarth Kaul picked up four wickets on the first day•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Things looked dire for Gujarat at 82 for 4, but Juneja and Gandhi didn’t buckle under pressure. Together they pinched a number of sharp singles. On one occasion, Gandhi shaped for the cut off Pankaj, but realised that the ball was a touch closer to him than expected. He immediately arched back and glided the ball for four. The run-rate, too, trickled past three as they completed their 50-run partnership in 67 balls. There were a few lucky breaks as well:Gandhi, on 42, stepped out and smashed Shahbaz Nadeem, who could barely get his hands on the ball as it flew past his face for four. But Gujarat once again let the momentum slip by losing a wicket before a break. Rest of India captain Cheteshwar Pujara introduced part-time offspinner Akhil Herwadkar to bowl the last over before tea, and he struck with his second delivery. Juneja went back to a short ball and punched uppishly off the backfoot but picked out Pujara at short cover. A despondent Juneja couldn’t get himself to leave the field.Rest of India made a few fielding lapses in the final session, as Kaul and Karun dropped straightforward chances offered by Karan Patel and Mohit Thadani respectively. Kaul, who hurt his ring finger on his right hand while attempting the catch and went off the field, returned to make amends by dismissing Thadani. Gandhi eventually got to his hundred off 125 balls in the company of the tail. An over earlier, though, Chintan Gaja was caught off a deflection off the keeper’s pads and held by Manoj Tiwary at first slip, but umpire Virender Sharma turned it down. Pankaj returned to have Gaja trapped in front, but Rest of India would have to wait for at least another day to bat.
