Arsenal Struck Gold On Embarrassing £35m Flop

A key factor in Arsenal's recent rise has been their impressive work in the transfer market, with the Gunners having efficiently managed their incomings and outgoings in recent years.

With regard to player sales, in particular, the north Londoners have been rather ruthless in their desire to move on first-team assets, having notably ripped up contracts for the likes of Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

However, The Emirates outfit have also been able to recoup notable transfer fees for a handful of peripheral figures in recent years, with the £25m sale of academy graduate Joe Willock to Newcastle United having been particularly noteworthy.

One sale of the not-too-distant past which recouped an even greater fee for the Gunners was that of Alex Iwobi's departure to Everton in 2019, with the exit of the Nigerian also looking like something of a blinder for the club.

How much is Alex Iwobi worth now?

The Lagos native had made almost 150 appearances for the north Londoners after being handed his debut by Arsene Wenger back in 2015, enjoying a respectable, albeit unspectacular record of 15 goals and 25 assists in that time.

The former youth star had failed to truly establish himself as a regular fixture in the side, however, having never scored more than three Premier League goals in a single campaign for the club.

That inconsistency had seen the then-youngster come in for criticism at times from supporters – albeit with that having been deemed "unfair" by club legend Ian Wright – with few tears likely to have been shed when the forward was ultimately allowed to depart, particularly after receiving a rather hefty fee of around £35m from the Toffees.

Everton's Alex Iwobi

That sale appears even more of a masterstroke at present as the 26-year-old has seen a notable decline in his valuation, with CIES Football Observatory valuing the 5 foot 11 man at just £13m – albeit with just over a year left to run on his existing deal.

While the 63-cap wide man has enjoyed an encouraging season on a personal note for the Goodison outfit after racking up eight assists in the league thus far, that form had come after a tricky start to life in his new home.

The one-time England youth international was notably labelled "embarrassing" by the Liverpool Echo's David Prentice back in 2020, having thus far scored fewer goals (eight) and provided fewer assists (15) than he did in the capital, despite having already racked up 131 appearances.

That failure to truly make his mark on Merseyside will have left few back at Arsenal ruing their decision to sell, with it looking as if the Gunners well and truly played a blinder such has been Iwobi's plummeting valuation.

Liverpool Could Be Set To Miss Out On £80k p/w Target

Liverpool are fearing they could be set to miss out on another reported summer transfer target in Mason Mount amid his ongoing contract debacle.

What's the latest with Mount's contract?

Chelsea's 2022/23 campaign has been even more underwhelming than that at Anfield with the Blues slumped in the bottom half of the table.

One player who has suffered this season is Mount with his output severely hampered with just one year remaining on his current deal.

It is believed contract talks in west London had hit an impasse over recent months which has sparked speculation surrounding his future at his boyhood club.

Reports have suggested the Reds are a side that would be potentially interested in taking him away from Stamford Bridge if he was looking to leave.

However, it is now claimed talks between Chelsea and Mount have now resumed ahead of the summer with his contract in danger of entering its final 12 months.

And with this in mind, a potential move in the summer has been thrown into question as the Blues look to lock down the future of their £80k-per-week ace.

Indeed, speaking on the Talking Transfers podcast, insider Graeme Bailey has claimed the Reds are now fearing missing out on another big summer target:

(19:10) "The fact he's come back to the table or he's been receptive to it in the last few weeks. I think there's a real growing confidence.

"And we've seen that I think with Liverpool where yeah, if he's available, Liverpool are going to be all in for him. But I think there's a real acceptance and there's a real fear at Liverpool behind the scenes. I think they were hoping that Graham Potter might stay for the rest of the season that would've helped their pursuit of Mason Mount."

Would Mount be a big loss for Liverpool?

Looking ahead to the summer, it is believed the Reds have already dropped out of the race to potentially sign their biggest target for the upcoming transfer window.

Jude Bellingham is a player who is likely going to cost a small fortune to prise away from Borussia Dortmund and that is seemingly a price Liverpool are unable to match.

But their midfield is an area which is clearly of concern at Anfield with many voicing their frustrations about the current crop of players at Jurgen Klopp's disposal.

And in Mount, the Reds could have been bringing in an established Premier League midfielder who has been hailed as a "genius" by Joe Cole.

Mount tanks inside the top eighth percentile for progressive passes made in the last year which could offer the Liverpool midfield a fresh spark of creativity (via FBref).

However, it could feel like a crushing blow if another of their summer targets is to slip away from their grasp ahead of the transfer window opening.

Having said that, there are still a number of weeks until it opens which will allow the Reds to assess their options with major improvement needed for the new campaign.

Nottingham Forest Update On Steve Cooper’s Future Emerges

Nottingham Forest could make a managerial “change” by sacking Steve Cooper in a bid to stop them getting relegated from the Premier League, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest on Cooper's future?

The Reds are in serious danger of dropping down to the Championship as they currently find themselves in the relegation zone and level on points with Leeds United and Leicester City, having won just seven, drawn nine and lost 18 of their 34 matches this season, and this form has seen the 43-year-old boss come under real pressure.

The Telegraph have reported that Evangelos Marinakis was "furious" to see the Midlands outfit allow Brentford to come back to secure the 2-1 victory last weekend and was "seething" at his manager's substitutions, and even though there are only four games of the campaign remaining, a change at the helm is still a real possibility.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones revealed that he’s heard Nottingham Forest may consider sacking Cooper and bringing in a short-term replacement just like the recent events that have occurred at Elland Road. He said:

“Panic season is fully underway and with Leeds taking this bold decision over their set-up there will be aftershocks felt at other clubs around them. One situation that is very interesting is at Forest, where we know Steve Cooper's position has been spoken about on and off all season. They've been sticking by him but more than one good source has said to me that it would not surprise them now if Forest were to make a change in a bid to save their own season.

“They have been loyal up to now and the message has been that they will stick, but let's see. Cooper has credit in the bank that might save him, this is not an identical situation to the one Leeds were in, but there are issues recently that have really caused frustration in terms of trying to get vital points.

“Forest's run-in is easier than the one Leeds have – on paper at least – and if there is going to be a change then they can't leave it much longer. So it's squeaky bum time as there has to be absolute belief in Cooper doing this, otherwise it might be worth a gamble.”

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper.

Should Nottingham Forest stick with Cooper?

Nottingham Forest only offered Cooper a new contract back in October 2022 so his deal at the City Ground isn't set to expire for another two years, but considering the poor run of results and how much his side have struggled to adjust to life in the Premier League, Marinakis would be best finding a replacement, if not now then at least in the summer.

The Welshman and his squad have been averaging a disappointing 0.88 points per match throughout the course of the season which is nowhere near high enough to give themselves the best chance of avoiding relegation at the end of this term or next.

The Midlands outfit do have two winnable fixtures against Southampton and Crystal Palace, but with Arsenal, who very much remain challengers in the title race, and Chelsea still to face, the chances of Cooper being able to retain his team's top-flight status may soon look low.

Arsenal’s £29k-p/w Ace Hailed For Performance Vs Newcastle

Arsenal centre-back Jakub Kiwior was hailed by journalist Eduardo Hagn for his performance against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

How did Arsenal play against Newcastle?

It was an important victory for the Gunners yesterday afternoon, with the win taking them within just one point of league-leaders Manchester City, and they are still fighting to win their first Premier League title since 2004.

Martin Odegaard's first-half strike and a Fabian Schar own-goal provided Mikel Arteta's side with a 2-0 victory, keeping a clean sheet for the first time in eight games, a run stretching back to a 3-0 victory against Fulham in mid March.

Arsenal's competent defensive display coincided with Kiwior making just his second Premier League start since arriving from Spezia for £20m back in January, and members of the media were quick to praise the defender's performance.

Hagn took to Twitter to give credit to the 23-year-old for his displays since coming into the team, with the journalist saying: "A blessing these last two games. He’s shown he’s got what it takes to play for us. Won every battle against a very physical team… and faultless in possession. Jakub Kiwior."

Should Jakub Kiwior keep his place in the side?

It is a real surprise that Arteta did not bring the Pole into the starting XI sooner, given his performances over the past couple of weeks, making four clearances and three interceptions against Chelsea, the highest combined total of any Arsenal player.

The 6 foot 2 defender received a 7.0 Sofascore match rating against the Blues, and he was even better against Newcastle on Sunday, achieving a 7.2 rating, after winning all of his ground duels and only losing possession four times in the entire match.

Jakub Kiwior

Journalist Leyla Hamed has also praised the £29k-per-week earner, while querying Arteta's decision to not start him sooner, saying: "I wish we had played Kiwior more before. He has been the most confident with the ball at the back, so solid and composed. Definitely the closest to Saliba."

Rob Holding has been a real disappointment since coming in for William Saliba, with journalist Uche Amako branding him a "clear weak link" after his very poor performance against West Ham United back in April.

As such, Kiwior should undoubtedly keep his place in the side, heading into another tough game against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Emirates Stadium next weekend.

Aston Villa: Emery could sign big upgrade in £52m "machine"

Aston Villa have seen a complete twist in fortune this season, from relegation candidates to European hopefuls, the Villans have been on a journey.

The club's recent success is down to the expertise of manager Unai Emery, who was appointed in November following the dismissal of Steven Gerrard.

When the Spaniard took over, Villa had gained just eight points from their opening eight fixtures, placing them just four points above the drop zone.

Not only has Emery raised the levels of performance at Villa Park, but the whole club looks to be in transition, as numerous links to lavish players have been made ahead of the summer transfer window.

What’s the latest on Manuel Ugarte to Aston Villa?

According to FootballTransfers, the Villans are the 'front runners' monitoring the movements of Sporting CP midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

The 22-year-old, who has also gained interest from top-flight rivals Liverpool, is reported to have a release clause of £52m in Lisbon, a price not so high for a player that can offer so much.

It’s also speculated that the price isn’t too high for Villa, who, according to The Sun, have £200m to spend this summer, as Mateu Alemany is set to arrive as director of football from Barcelona.

Sporting CP midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

What could Manuel Ugarte bring to Aston Villa?

Once hailed as a “warrior” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the Uruguayan is one of Europe’s hottest prospects ahead of the summer window.

As per Sofascore, the 22-year-old has maintained a match rating of 7.04 this season, ranking him among the top ten performers from Sporting in the league this campaign, warranting the hype surrounding the youngster.

Emery told The Athletic last month of his desire to strengthen his squad saying he wants "two players for each position" in order to "add performances" to improve the team.

Potentially adding Ugarte to the already budding midfield could bring the best out of his current holding midfielders, Douglas Luiz and Boubacar Kamara, who have both been outperformed by the Uruguayan this season.

The coveted midfielder ranks in the top 1% of the eight leagues comparative to Primeira Liga for passing completion (91.5%), tackles (4.66) and interceptions (2.25) per 90 minutes, with Villa's duo scoring lower in each of the vital attributes in their position in comparison to the potential summer signing, as per FBref.

Luiz averages a passing rate of 83.1%, making 2.19 tackles per game and 1.29 interceptions, Kamara with similar numbers at 85.1%, 2.57 tackles and 1.03 interceptions, highlighting the level of talent that Ugarte possesses.

Hailed as a "ball-winning machine" by podcaster Dave Hendrick on Twitter, there are no doubts regarding the Uruguayan's physicality and aggression, which are so often failing points for midfielders that venture to the Premier League from abroad.

If Villa can pull the signing of Ugarte off, then Emery would have one of the continent's most promising talents in his midfield arsenal – a big coup heading into a huge season next term.
