Which of these two strikers should Liverpool gamble on?

Liverpool are certainly getting into the swing of things in the early days of this summer’s transfer window. After announcing the signing of James Milner from Manchester City on a free transfer last week, the Reds have now followed that up by landing Danny Ings from Burnley for an as-yet undecided fee, while Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Adam Bogdan is also expected to join the club for free in the coming few days.

That makes a goalkeeper, a midfielder and a striker that the Anfield club have already recruited, yet Reds boss Brendan Rodgers knows that further strengthening is needed before he can deem it a successful summer. So potent when spearheaded by Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge during that near-glorious 2013/14 campaign, the way in which Liverpool’s attacking force regressed last season was painful to witness for both fans and manager alike.

While Sturridge remains at the club (albeit in a seemingly permanent state of convalescence), Rodgers has failed to find an adequate replacement for Suarez since his £75 million sale to Barcelona, with Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert – last year’s striking recruits – falling well short of the mark.

Two players the Reds have been repeatedly linked with are Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke and West Bromwich Albion hitman Saido Berahino, and with both being young, proven in the Premier League and apparently keen to move on to bigger things, signing one of them would certainly be an upgrade on Liverpool’s current striking misfits. But which one would be the best fit at Anfield?

[ffc-gal cat=”liverpool” no=”5″]

Benteke’s magnificent renaissance with Villa in the latter half of last season suggested that his blip during the previous campaign under then-manager Paul Lambert was due to the Scot’s failure to make the most of the striker’s greatest strengths, rather than any inadequacy on the player’s behalf in dealing with the demands of Premier League football.

Tim Sherwood – who replaced Lambert in February – saw that Benteke’s brute physicality and strength could be maximised to devastating effect, as the Belgian battered and barged past countless defenders on the way to scoring twelve goals in fifteen games for Sherwood’s rejuvenated Villa side.

However, as effective a striker as the Belgian may be, there are reasons to doubt whether he would truly be a good fit for the Reds. Rodgers has always favoured quick, technically gifted attackers at Anfield, capable of taking on, running in behind and beating defenders with their pace and trickery. The ideal Liverpool striker in Rodgers’ view is a player who doesn’t rely too heavily on his height or strength, and is no mere focal point for a barrage of long balls or crosses from out wide – hence the Northern Irishman’s decision to offload Andy Carroll soon after he became Liverpool boss in 2012.

While there is no denying that Benteke possesses significantly superior technical skills to Carroll, and is a far better player than a bog-standard target man, his lack of pace and relative weakness at beating defenders in one-on-one situations means he may struggle to adapt to the high-pressing, high-intensity style of play implemented by Rodgers at the Merseyside club.

Such a player could theoretically thrive in a striking partnership with the more conventional Rodgers forward – see Liverpool’s 3-0 drubbing of Tottenham at White Hart Lane early last season as a prime example, where Daniel Sturridge and Mario Balotelli complemented each other brilliantly – but given how often Sturridge is injured, and how badly Balotelli struggled while leading the attack on his own, it represents too great a gamble.

Saido Berahino, on the other hand, is much better suited for the current Liverpool side. The England youngster is a supremely gifted footballer and is only getting better, scoring 20 goals in all competitions for the Baggies last season.

The 21-year-old is in many ways similar to Reds attacker Raheem Sterling; lightning quick, skilful and capable of changing a game with one moment of magic, the prospect of seeing the duo team up at Anfield is certainly an exciting one.

And yet things are never that easy with Liverpool; not only has Sterling expressed his strong desire to leave the club this summer, but his agent Aidy Ward is the very man who represents Berahino. Relations between the Reds hierarchy and Ward are toxic at best after the agent made a number of barbed comments in the media, leading to the club cancelling a scheduled meeting where they were due to discuss Sterling’s future.

And so Brendan Rodgers faces something of a dilemma if he is to make a move for one of his two preferred targets; does he opt for Benteke – an excellent striker who may nevertheless find it difficult to adapt to the Liverpool system – or Berahino, a player who is for all intents and purposes better suited for the Reds but whose representative is very much a persona non grata at Anfield?

Of course, Rodgers may have identified other striking targets, and his interest in these two early-summer favourites may wane between now and the start of the new season.

Whatever happens, an intriguing couple of months await for Liverpool.

Celtic fans hoping to see big first team changes for Partick Thistle clash

Celtic head into tonight’s clash with Partick Thistle with the chance to put the nightmare of Sunday’s visit to Tynecastle behind them.

There’s no more talk of unbeaten runs, no more hiding places for players in faltering form and no more room for dropped points with Aberdeen breathing down their neck.

A win over their city rivals at Celtic Park this evening will see them move five points clear of the Dons ahead of a mammoth match against Derek McInnes’ side at the weekend.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of starting eleven Brendan Rodgers goes for. Will he ring the changes and drop some of the worst performers against Hearts or will he show more faith in his players and go for his usual team selection?

Fans are certainly hoping some prominent first team players miss out with the likes of Craig Gordon and Dedryck Boyata being singled out to be dropped for the visit of the Jags.

Dorus De Vries appears to be a popular choice to get a start with some supporters also calling for Kristoffer Ajer to get another opportunity after impressing in recent weeks.

Liverpool fans really want to see Stefan de Vrij at Anfield

As reported by The Sun, Liverpool have been handed a big boost in their pursuit of Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij after the Italian club revealed contract discussions had broken down and the player would be free to leave in January.

The Dutch international’s contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he will likely be a prime target for a number of big European clubs next month.

After impressive spells at Feyenoord and in Serie A, he could be exactly what the Anfield are looking for in order to settle down their under fire defensive line.

Fans are certainly keen, desperate to land the player when the transfer window opens, with many hoping that the Reds partner him with his international teammate Virgil van Dijk.

Would adding those two players solve Liverpool’s defensive woes or do they simply ship too many goals due to the tactics and style of Jurgen Klopp’s system?

Nearly half of Man United fans want to see Lukaku dropped for Southampton

Manchester United’s injury list is growing seemingly by the day. With as many as seven players either doubtful or fully ruled out for this weekend’s home game against Southampton, Jose Mourinho is presiding over a side which is already depleted.

On top of that, though, with a trip to Sam Allardyce’s Everton up just two days later, and with some of his best players having already played a string of gruelling 90 minute tests with little rest in between, the United manager may well have to dig into the resources and play weaker teams than he may have liked against both the Saints and the Toffees either side of the New Year celebrations.

With that in mind, we asked Manchester United fans whether Mourinho should start Lukaku or Zlatan Ibrahimovic against Southampton. The response, though, was the kind you might have expected: inconclusive.

Lukaku hasn’t scored a goal in three games, since his headed opener against West Brom just before the start of the Christmas period – he ended a goal drought at the start of December only to seemingly start a new one just a couple of games later. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, too, has only scored once all season – a free-kick against Bristol City in the League Cup.

With Anthony Martial a doubt for the clash at the weekend, and with Marcus Rashford goalless in five appearances since the Manchester derby, it seems as though everyone at United is undecided on just what the best way forward is.

West Ham fans pleased with Martinez performance

Toni Martinez made his first start for West Ham United in Tuesday’s FA Cup third-round replay with Shrewsbury Town at the London Stadium.

The West Ham fans have been crying out for the Spaniard to be involved this season, and he came off the bench to feature against Shrewsbury earlier this month before being handed a start in the replay on home soil.

It would be fair to say that the forward did not have many chances to get his name on the scoresheet, but he ended the night with an assist – setting up Reece Burke for the only goal of what was a largely uneventful match.

Martinez’s attitude has made him a favourite with the West Ham fans, and it is worth noting that the 20-year-old, who is valued at £1.4m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has scored nine times in 13 Premier League 2 appearances for West Ham’s Under-23 team during the 2017-18 campaign.

It might not have happened for the striker in terms of goals on Tuesday night, but the West Ham fans were still delighted with his contribution at the London Stadium.

Tottenham fans desperate for Lucas announcement

Poor old Anton Walkes. At any other point of the season, news of his loan move to Portsmouth would have brought floods of responses from Tottenham Hotspur supporters wishing the 20-year-old well.

Tottenham fans are otherwise engaged at the moment, however, with many obsessing over whether Lucas Moura, who is valued at £25.2m by transfermarkt.co.uk, is going to join the club in time for Wednesday night’s Premier League clash with Manchester United.

According to Sky Sports News, Tottenham have agreed a price of £25m with Paris Saint-Germain, but the transfer has not yet been completed.

Spurs only have until Wednesday night to complete the move, and head coach Mauricio Pochettino will not want to be stressing about it ahead of the clash with in-form Man United, who will have Alexis Sanchez in their team.

It was nothing personal against Walkes; Tottenham fans just have their minds firmly focused on one thing at the moment as Lucas nears a move to Wembley Stadium.

West Ham fans delighted as Marko Arnautovic returns from injury

Over the first two months of the season, if you were to ask West Ham fans which player they had been most underwhelmed by, chances are the majority would have told you Marko Arnautovic.

With a huge price tag to live up to following his summer arrival from Stoke, much was expected of the Austrian. However, his form over the first few games of the 2017/18 campaign was nothing short of abysmal.

However, since the arrival of David Moyes, Arnautovic has looked like a totally different player and has become the catalyst for a significant upturn in form for the Hammers.

Therefore, when the 28-year-old, who is valued at £16.2million by Tranfermarkt, was sidelined with injury at the end of January, fans were concerned.

However, the club have now confirmed that their star player is close to full fitness and will be in contention for Saturday’s game against Watford.

After hearing the news, Hammers fans took to Twitter to express their delight…

Everton fans insist Allardyce was wrong over Sandro

Sandro Ramirez could not buy a start for Everton in the first half of the 2017-18 season. The Toffees won the race to sign the Spaniard from Malaga last summer, but he only started three Premier League matches before joining Sevilla on loan last month. The 22-year-old was not deemed good enough for a side battling for a top-10 place in the Premier League, but was for a team in the knockout round of the Champions League.[ad_pod ]Sandro, who is valued at £9m by transfermarkt.co.uk, came off the bench in Sevilla’s last-16 first leg against Manchester United on Wednesday night, and his presence actually caused the Red Devils some concern. The Everton supporters were watching on, and many could not believe that the former Barcelona youngster was not able to secure minutes for the Toffees, but could appear for a Sevilla side competing at the highest level of European football. It appears that the Everton fans are unhappy with Sam Allardyce when it comes to this one.A selection of the Twitter reaction to Sandro’s European outing can be seen below:

In Focus: Everton don’t need Bergwijn when they already have Lookman and Onyekuru

According to ESPN FC, Everton are one of the clubs tracking PSV Eindhoven attacker Steven Bergwijn, rated at £4.5m according to Transfermarkt, with a view to making a potential summer move for him.

What’s the word, then?

Well, according to ESPN FC, a number of Europe’s top clubs have been alerted to the 20-year-old’s potential following some impressive performances for the Eredivisie outfit this season, with sources close to the player saying that the Toffees and Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are among the teams keen.

ESPN FC says that PSV are braced for offers for the Dutchman in the summer, with the Premier League looking to be his likely destination if he does go.

The report adds that the young forward fits the profile of Everton’s recent transfer policy as he is a promising talent with the potential to develop and improve at Goodison Park.

How well has Bergwijn done this season?

He has been brilliant.

The 20-year-old has scored five goals and provided a further six assists in 22 Dutch top flight appearances, and he netted both in the 2-1 win against Sparta Rotterdam last weekend.

The versatile attacker can play on both wings, and according to WhoScored.com he has made 40 key passes in those 22 Eredivisie outings, while he has successfully completed 58 of the 85 dribbles he has attempted.

Would he be a good signing for Everton?

He certainly would be, but it doesn’t appear to be a position they really need extra bodies in.

Bergwijn’s displays this season show the potential he has, but it would also be a confusing move in a way considering they already have the likes of Yannick Bolasie, Theo Walcott, Nikola Vlasic, Ademola Lookman and Henry Onyekuru that can play out wide, while record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson has also often played from the flank rather than in the centre.

While the Merseyside outfit will always be looking to sign the best young talent in Europe, it would be a strange move to bring Bergwijn to Goodison in the summer considering the options they already have on the flanks.

Newcastle fans react as Shelvey knee injury is confirmed

Newcastle United revealed on Tuesday that Jonjo Shelvey picked up a knee injury during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes of the Premier League clash, but is now facing a period on the sidelines with a knee problem.

Shelvey’s form was up and down in the opening months of the season, but the midfielder has been very impressive in recent weeks. Indeed, he was outstanding in Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Manchester United earlier this month.

A number of Newcastle fans were unhappy with Shelvey’s part in Bournemouth’s equaliser at the weekend, however, with the midfielder failing to track back.

The Newcastle supporters have been reacting to the injury news, and there were those that took the chance to have a go at Shelvey, who is valued at £9m by transfermarkt.co.uk, following the Bournemouth match.

That said, the majority offered their best wishes to a player who has been in good form since the turn of the year.
