Leeds submit £30m bid to sign "insane" forward who's now keen on the move

Leeds United have now submitted a proposal for an “insane” forward, who is now keen on a move to Elland Road this summer, according to a report.

Leeds eyeing new forwards amid Joseph and Bamford uncertainty

Daniel Farke has now made it clear that Mateo Joseph has expressed a desire to move on this summer, with the manager saying: “With him the situation is quite clear. We really value and rate him – otherwise we wouldn’t have played him, especially in the beginning of the last successful campaign ahead of a golden boot winner in Joel Piroe and an experienced striker like Patrick Bamford.

“Nevertheless, he came to me and asked for a new challenge and would like to move. He has also hinted that he prefers a move to Spain due to his Spanish roots. That was his call.”

It is starting to look increasingly likely the striker will leave, given that Farke has no plans to stand in his way, and he is not the only Leeds centre-forward that could be on the move, with widespread reports suggesting Patrick Bamford’s time at Elland Road could be over.

As a result, one of Farke’s main tasks will be to bring in a new striker this summer, but the manager is also keen on bringing in a new winger, with Tottenham Hotspur’s Manor Solomon recently re-entering the frame as a potential option.

Feyenoord’s Igor Paixao has also emerged as a target for the Whites, and there has now been a promising new update on their pursuit of the forward, with The Yorkshire Evening Post revealing he likes the idea of playing for Leeds in the Premier League.

The newly-promoted side have now submitted an official proposal to the representatives of Paixao, and his entourage were impressed by Leeds’ presentation, indicating that a deal could be possible.

In a further update, it has now been revealed the Whites have submitted a formal €35m (£30m) offer for the forward’s services, which is close to Feyenoord’s asking price.

"Insane" Paixao could be statement signing for Leeds

Having only just achieved promotion from the Championship, Farke’s side would be making a real statement if they were able to sign the 25-year-old, given the level of his performances for Feyenoord last season.

The Brazilian was the driving force behind his club recording a third-place finish in the Eredivisie, collecting 16 goals and 14 assists in 34 appearances, while also picking up seven goal contributions in 11 Champions League outings.

Scout Ben Mattinson has also likened the Eredivisie star to Real Madrid’s Rodrygo, in light of his “insane” ball striking ability, and he is very impressive at dribbling in tight spaces.

It is clear that Paixao could make a real impact in Leeds’ battle for survival next season, so it is exciting news that a deal could very much be on the cards.

Which pitch? Teams still guessing on eve of the match

Two black-soil surfaces are being prepared, but it isn’t clear yet which one will be used for the Kanpur Test

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Sep-20242:23

Manjrekar: I will play Kuldeep Yadav for second Test

There is some uncertainty around the conditions that the second Test between India and Bangladesh will be played in with representatives from both teams admitting that they didn’t know which pitch will be used.”To be honest, I don’t know which surface we are going to play on yet,” India batting coach Abhishek Nayar said on Thursday afternoon, which followed similar thoughts expressed by Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe on Wednesday.”Yes I had a look at [the pitch],” Hathurusinghe had said, “But the groundsman has prepared two pitches. We don’t know on which we will play on. Tomorrow we will find out.”During Wednesday’s training session, India captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir had a look at the two pitches that have been prepared for this Test match. They seemed to spend a little more time looking at the drier of the two black-soil surfaces.Related

Weather and pitch in focus as India, Bangladesh ponder three spinners

Indications are it might start as a good batting surface before taking slow and low turn from the third day onwards. But the weather in the week of the Test match might complicate matters. It’s overcast and there are thunder storms expected on the first three days of the game, which may slow down the natural wear and tear that helps subcontinental pitches become spin-friendly. There was some rain after India’s training session ended on Thursday as well and the groundstaff were quick to get the square covered.India, as a result, are waiting until the morning of the Test to finalise their XI, specifically whether they need an extra spinner instead of the extra seamer they used on Chennai’s red-soil surface.”Both the pitches look pretty good,” Nayar said. “Kanpur is always known to have good pitches. I am not sure about the bounce yet. I think, with the conditions and the forecast, it is going to be interesting as to how when we turn up to go in the morning, the conditions are. I think a lot will depend on that because as you know in Test wicket, conditions can be a huge factor in how the pitch plays. So it is too early for us to judge and decide or have any sort of thought process on the pitch or the conditions. But we are hoping we come in tomorrow to a sunny day and not an overcast Kanpur.”India lead the series 1-0 and if they go in with a spinner over a seamer, their choice will be between local boy Kuldeep Yadav, who had an outstanding series against England at the start of the year, and Axar Patel, whose ability to relentlessly attack the stumps can come in quite handy if there is low bounce. Axar joined R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the last Test that India played in Kanpur, against New Zealand in 2021, which went into the fifth day with the visitors holding onto their last wicket and drawing the game.

Mehidy 87*, Jaker 58 help Bangladesh fight back on truncated third day

Bad light ended play early, but hosts were 81 ahead, recovering despite an early burst from Kagiso Rabada

Mohammad Isam23-Oct-2024Bad light forced the third day’s play of the Dhaka Test to be called off at 4pm local time, an hour before the scheduled end of the day. Bangladesh fought back in the game and now lead by 81 runs, with South Africa still short of three wickets. The hosts ended the day on 283 for 7, thanks mainly to half-centuries from Mehidy Hasan Miraz and the debutant Jaker Ali.Play was stopped at 3.17pm after 17 minutes of play under floodlights at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. There was earlier a 78-minute stoppage due to rain from 1.42pm onwards. This is unseasonal rain in Bangladesh due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal, which is forecast to turn into a cyclone on Wednesday.Mehidy was Bangladesh’s saviour on the day with his fourth half-century this year, once again saving the team’s blushes from a difficult position. They were 112 for 6, from where Mehidy and Jaker added 138 runs for the seventh wicket. It is Bangladesh’s third century stand from the seventh wicket in their last five Tests.Mehidy struck nine fours and a six in his 171-ball stay on the third day, batting confidently enough to pass some of that confidence to Jaker, who had got only 2 in the first innings. But the day had started horribly for Bangladesh, who lost three wickets in the first 30 minutes of play, with a Test to save.Kagiso Rabada had removed both of Bangladesh’s overnight batters Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Mushfiqur Rahim by the fourth over of the day. Mahmudul edged a wide one, giving first slip an easy catch after making 40. Rabada then blew away Mushfiqur’s middle stump later in the over with a delivery that was similar to his dismissal of the same batter in the first innings; while Mushfiqur lost two stumps on the first day, this time it was the middle pole which came off. When Litton Das was caught behind off Keshav Maharaj shortly afterwards, Bangladesh slipped to 112 for 6, and were in danger of an innings defeat on the third day. Mehidy and Jaker then stepped in, battling through a tough first session, and helping Bangladesh go past South Africa’s 202-run first-innings lead.Jaker, who played second fiddle to Mehidy, struck the ball nicely through the covers. He pinched two fours through fine leg too, one of them getting him to a half-century. Jaker hammered Rabada with a confident pull shot too. He also took three fours off Rabada, twice through the off side and once through a pull.Mehidy, meanwhile, was mainly effective against Maharaj, hitting him for four boundaries through the covers – sometimes even lofted ones, but mostly along the ground. He generally handled spin well, as Bangladesh got within one run of South Africa’s lead at lunch. An hour into the second session, rain stopped play for 78 minutes. Before the rain break, Jaker reached had his maiden Test fifty. He fell lbw to Maharaj after getting beaten trying to turn the ball on the leg side. The umpire gave it out despite a casual appeal from the visitors, but replays showed it was the correct decision. Jaker struck seven fours in his 111-ball stay.

As can be seen, FSG have backed Slot in the transfer market by splashing more cash than any other Premier League side this summer.

More arrivals could still be on the way before the September 1 deadline, though, with a new centre-back not yet secured. Talking recently, Slot admitted that Liverpool are yet to replace Jarell Quansah, who joined Bayer Leverkusen, but shared how Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo may fill in if required.

A number of defenders have been linked with moves to Anfield, including Palace star Marc Guehi and Parma teenager Giovanni Leoni.

Guehi would be the more proven addition of the two, and a new update has now emerged regarding a possible move to Merseyside.

Liverpool submit two offers for Marc Guehi

According to journalist Santi Aouna on X, Liverpool have made two offers to sign Guehi from the Eagles, however, both proposals have been turned down.

The Reds are now ‘exploring other defensive targets’, and in his Foot Mercato report, Aouna added that Palace want €55m (£48m) for Guehi and were left insulted by Liverpool’s offers.

It remains to be seen how much Liverpool put on the table for Guehi, but it seems as if the defensive “monster” will be lining up against them at Wembley on August 10.

The 25-year-old has less than 12 months remaining on his Selhurst Park contract, so his future could be one to keep an eye on, and it wouldn’t be a complete shock if FSG returned with a third bid over the coming weeks.

England player ratings vs Serbia: The Thomas Tuchel era has lift off – Noni Madueke and Morgan Rogers among the star performers as much-improved Three Lions run riot

Harry Kane, Ezra Konsa, Marc Guehi and Marcus Rashford all got on the scoresheet on a night to remember in Belgrade

At last! England produced a statement performance under Thomas Tuchel on Tuesday as the Three Lions faced down the intimidating atmosphere in Belgrade and calmly thrashed Serbia 5-0 to take a giant step towards sealing their place at the 2026 World Cup.

Harry Kane opened the scoring with a header while Noni Madueke, Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi all netted their first goals for their country in a fifth win out of five in Group K that all-but assured the Three Lions of top spot and place at the tournament in North America next summer.

Kane and Tuchel warned of the hostile reception England would be on the receiving end of, but they took the game to the hosts from the off. Anthony Gordon had two efforts saved by Djordje Petrovic and Kane missed a chance from close range, but the pressure soon told and England led in the 33rd minute when Kane, taking advantage of some very slack defending from a corner, headed Declan Rice's out-swinging delivery in.

A wonderful second goal followed two minutes later, the best of the Tuchel era. The move began with Jordan Pickford finding Reece  James, and Madueke feeding Elliot Anderson, whose pass back towards the Arsenal winger was helped on by a marvellous flick from Morgan Rogers, which allowed Madueke to bulldoze his way through the area before nonchalantly dinking the ball over Petrovic.

England had an invitation to sit back and protect their lead but instead went looking for more goals in the second half. The third arrived when the ever-lively Gordon collected a short free-kick and went for goal. Petrovic could only push the ball towards the danger zone where three players had gathered and Konsa eventually converted.

Guehi then got in on the act and bundled in a fourth after Nikola Milenkovic had been sent off while substitute Marcus Rashford rounded off a dream night by bagging a late penalty.

AFPGoalkeeper & Defence

Jordan Pickford (6/10):

Came out of his area to help James sweep up one rare moment of danger but was not tested otherwise. Showed his long passing ability to start the move for the second goal.

Reece James (6/10):

A confident display going forward and in defence, albeit not as involved as against Andorra.

Marc Guehi (7/10):

Didn't put a foot wrong at the back and got his first goal and assist for his country.

Ezri Konsa (7/10):

A fine all-round display. Defended superbly, showed ambition with his passing and proved the pinball wizard to score. Had to take a second when a laser was shone in his face.

Tino Livramento (6/10):

Stopped a dangerous counter by dispossessing Vlahovic. Not as exciting going forward as Lewis-Skelly but perhaps a safer pair of hands defensively.

Declan Rice (8/10):

A complete performance. Showed leadership in the middle and provided two perfect set-piece deliveries for assists.

Elliot Anderson (7/10):

Built on his excellent debut and showed he can also do it against a proper opponent. Did make one dodgy pass which led to a Serbia counter but he kept playing on the front foot and made amends with his role for the second goal.

Morgan Rogers (8/10):

Had an excellent understanding with Madueke and his flick to the winger for his goal was a stroke of genius.

Noni Madueke (8/10):

A constant threat. Made amends for some poor finishing against Andorra with his nerveless strike

Harry Kane (6/10):

Couldn't get enough contact on his first chance but typically made up for it by getting the ball rolling with a fine header.

Anthony Gordon (8/10):

A constant thorn in Serbia's side. His dogged running wore them down and Konsa's goal was thanks to his direct play.

Marcus Rashford (7/10):

His pace was highly effective against tired, 10-man Serbia. and he was rewarded for his impressive cameo by scoring the penalty which he had helped win with his reverse pass to Watkins.

Jarrod Bowen (6/10):

A positive display after replacing Madueke.
Ollie Watkins: (7/10):

Very keen to get involved. Denied a goal by the offside flag but stayed focused and earned the penalty.

Jordan Henderson (N/A):

Got a customary 10-minute cameo and must have enjoyed having so little to do.

A fine response to his critics as his side dominated a high-level opponent on their own turf and did not settle for anything less than the big scoreline they craved.

Celtic discover fee needed to sign versatile "top young player" at Parkhead

Celtic are in the market for reinforcements and now know the price needed to sign a versatile star who could enrich Brendan Rodgers’ squad, according to a report.

Johnny Kenny signs Celtic contract extension

After Jahmai Simpson-Pusey signed on loan for the Scottish Premiership champions from Manchester City, there has been a distinct lack of activity on the transfer front at Parkhead.

However, confirmation came on Friday that Johnny Kenny has extended his contract at Celtic, which may offer some clarity regarding their striking pecking order.

Speaking after his renewal, Kenny stated that he wants to help the Bhoys win trophies and score as many goals as possible while involved under Brendan Rodgers and beyond.

He stated: “I’m delighted. All I wanted to do was commit my future to this club, and I’m delighted it’s done now. I feel really proud. I spoke to the manager at the start of the summer, and it was a case of tying it all together.”

Later, he added: “I want to play Champions League football, win every trophy available and score goals. That’s my aim.”

Regardless, Celtic are still in the market for a new striker and could turn to Wycombe Wanderers’ Richard Kone, though his goalscoring exploits will also not have gone unnoticed in England.

However, the forward line isn’t the only area in need of reinforcements, and the Bhoys have now been told how much they will need to pay to solidify in another area of the pitch.

Celtic could have to pay £15 million for Kassoum Ouattara

According to Pete O’Rourke in conversation with Football Insider, Celtic may need to pay £15 million to sign AS Monaco defender Kassoum Ouattara amid competition from Rangers for his signature.

He explained: “He’s somebody who is on the list of both clubs. Celtic and Rangers are both looking to bolster their left-full-back options. Celtic are looking for competition and cover for Kieran Tierney following the departure of Greg Taylor earlier in the summer window.”

O'Riley repeat: Celtic could make bargain move for £3m "mentality monster"

As Celtic seek attacking difference makers, could they sign a “mentality monster” in a move reminiscent of Matt O’Riley’s arrival in January 2022?

ByBen Gray Aug 8, 2025

Labelling Ouattara a “top young player”, he added: “There will be a lot of competition for him as well; French sides Toulouse, Metz, and also Dutch Champions PSV have been looking at him. It’s not going to be a straightforward deal for Rangers or Celtic, but it’s definitely a position both clubs are looking at as they want to strengthen their options.”

Last term, Ouattara made 16 appearances across all competitions and registered a solitary assist, featuring both as a left-back and further up that side when needed.

With Kieran Tierney’s minutes likely to be managed, the 20-year-old could offer valuable cover while also helping to address the Hoops’ lack of depth out wide, which has become a bugbear since Nicolas Kuhn’s departure.

'Extraordinary' Mason Greenwood told how to reach next level with Marseille as ex-Man Utd forward makes return to Champions League stage

Mason Greenwood has been told how to reach the next level with Marseille as the former Manchester United forward makes a return to Champions League football. The Englishman is preparing for the biggest game of his Marseille career so far as he readies himself to face Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. He has reignited his career in France after leaving Old Trafford under a cloud, and Tuesday night marks his return to top-tier European football.

Stunning stats but questions remain

Greenwood’s numbers in France are already formidable. Since his move to Marseille in 2024, he has netted 24 goals in 40 appearances, with 21 of those coming in his first Ligue 1 campaign – enough to make him joint-top scorer. Yet critics argue the raw data doesn’t tell the whole story, as he is yet to consistently influence games at his will.

AdvertisementAFPCisse sounds the alarm

Speaking to , former Marseille striker Djibril Cisse issued a pointed but constructive challenge. “The margin of progression for Greenwood is to be more consistent, to be much more influential and impactful in the game,” he said. “We’ve seen his extraordinary technical quality, he provokes, he dribbles left or right, he destabilises opponents. But it needs to be repeated more often.”

Whereas, Mamadou Niang warned: "Some great players can afford not to make the run, but not at OM."

De Zerbi’s role in the reinvention

Under Roberto De Zerbi, Greenwood has been given the freedom to rediscover his attacking flair. The Italian coach has deployed him as a wide forward who can cut inside, or as a direct striker when needed, extracting the best of his finishing. But the Italian has also been firm in his demands for Greenwood to track back, press high, and contribute to the team’s structure.

The coach said on Greenwood: "He also worked on the defensive side, the pressing. He hasn't always worked in that direction, but when he wants to, he does it. You have to understand that if he wants to become a great top player, he has to run without the ball. I saw Mbappe, Dembele put pressure without the ball. Greenwood has to do it, too."

AFPMadrid & PSG tests await Greenwood

All eyes will be on Greenwood this week as De Zerbi’s side face a brutal double-header. First comes a trip to the Bernabeu to face Kylian Mbappe’s Real Madrid on Tuesday, a clash where the attacker will likely be asked to show discipline against a relentless Spanish side. Just days later, Marseille return home to take on Paris Saint-Germain in a fiery Ligue 1 showdown. For Greenwood, these two matches offer the ultimate audition to silence his doubters.

Mooney: Voll has taken to international cricket 'like a duck to water'

Voll has filled the vacancy left by the injured Alyssa Healy magnificently, showing strong form ever since her strong showing in her debut WBBL season

Tristan Lavalette10-Dec-2024Opener Georgia Voll will look to cap a spectacular debut series in style against India at the WACA, with veteran teammate Beth Mooney marvelling at her ability to take to international cricket “like a duck to water.”After replacing injured skipper Alyssa Healy, the 21-year-old Voll was the standout performer of Australia’s comprehensive back-to-back victories in Brisbane that clinched the series against India. On debut, she made a composed unbeaten 46 that guided Australia to a five-wicket victory. In the second ODI, she followed up with a belligerent 101 off 87 balls in a memorable first international ton.Related

Voll, Perry centuries and Sutherland four-for seal series for Australia

Stats: Ellyse Perry hits new highs with 72-ball century

Healy opens up on injury: 'Probably took the wrong risk'

Her mesmerising performances have swayed the national selectors, and Voll has been added to Australia’s squad for the subsequent three-match ODI tour of New Zealand starting on December 19.Voll’s rise is on the back of an outstanding debut season with Sydney Thunder and she finished fifth overall in the runs charts with 330 at a strike rate of 144.73. Her breakout season was rewarded with selection in the WBBL Team of the Tournament.

“She has taken to it [international cricket] like a duck to water,” Mooney told reporters in Perth ahead of Wednesday’s series finale. “She is a bit of a breath of fresh air being a country kid.”She knows her game pretty well after doing it for a while in domestic cricket, so I think that has really helped her come into international cricket with a bit of confidence in her own game and her own form.”She has been really impressive. She has certainly done everything she can to make sure she keeps her name up in lights with the Australian selectors.”With Healy named in Australia’s squad to New Zealand, competition for a spot in Australia’s formidable top order will be fierce. Perhaps foreshadowing Australia’s future, Voll and fellow 21-year-old Phoebe Litchfield have combined well at the top of the order with partnerships of 48 and 130 in the opening two games.”These young kids coming in and peeling off hundreds left, right and centre puts a bit of pressure on the rest of us, but it’s a great spot Australian cricket is in,” Mooney said.”That’s a testament to the depth and investment of CA and ACA that we have the best domestic tournaments in the world.”Alyssa Healy hopes to play as a batter alone during their tour of New Zealand•ICC/Getty ImagesHaving performed almost flawlessly in their return to the field since a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign, Australia are looking to continue their stranglehold over India and whitewash the series on a WACA surface expected to produce trademark bounce and carry. There is much more on the line than just bragging rights, with Australia out to extend their lead in the ICC Women’s Championship ahead of England and India.”I think we have to take each of these games in isolation as they’re for championship points,” Mooney said. “We have got to try and nail [the series-finale] and then head over the ditch to New Zealand and get a few points there.”Mooney will return to her home ground in good touch having smashed 56 off 44 balls in Australia’s 371 for 8 – their third-highest score in women’s ODI cricket. She has also taken the gloves in Healy’s absence in a role she might continue in New Zealand. After rupturing the plantar fascia in her right foot during the T20 World Cup, Healy is making her way back from a knee injury and did bat in the nets at Allan Border Field.”She [Healy] is doing everything she can to make sure she is right, she will head over to New Zealand with us,” Mooney said. “She has been in the nets batting and things like that. I don’t know if she has done any keeping yet.”She will get assessed going into New Zealand, but I think at this stage she will just try and get on the field as a batter.”Meanwhile, New South Wales Breakers coach Gavan Twining has been announced as the women’s national team’s fielding and wicketkeeping coach in a newly created role. He joins assistants Scott Prestwidge and Dan Marsh to flesh out Australia’s coaching staff.”He’s a great human, he’s got a lot of ideas in the fielding space,” Mooney said.”It’s probably the right time for us to get an extra coach in to take a bit of a load off Shell [Shelley Nitschke] in that head coach capacity.”Current NSW assistant Grant Lambert has been appointed the Breakers’ interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Shakeel, Rizwan fifties lead Pakistan's recovery

Pakistan were reduced to 46 for 4 before a gritty rearguard from Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel

Danyal Rasool17-Jan-2025Half-centuries from Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan wrestled momentum back for Pakistan after Jayden Seales’ triple-strike had put West Indies in the box seat in Multan. On a surface tailor-made for spin, it was the fast bowler who proved the pick of the bunch, exploiting pace and slight seam movement to send debutant Mohammad Hurraira, Kamran Ghulam and Babar Azam back for single figures. Pakistan had, at that point, been reduced to 46 for 4, with West Indies looming ominously over the tail. But a gritty unbeaten 97-run rearguard for the fifth wicket, from Rizwan and Shakeel, thwarted the visitors for the rest of the day, to ensure Pakistan would end the day with a semblance of control. After the start was delayed by four hours owing to heavy fog that enveloped the ground, Pakistan won the toss and batted first in hazy conditions with the floodlights on throughout the course of the day. Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie bowled the first ball, an indication of how both sides perceived the pitch upon which each played three specialist spinners. Motie got rid of Pakistan captain Shan Masood early on, squeezing him down to the debutant wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach on the on side, but for the rest of the hour, it was Seales’ show.He had been sniffing right from the outset, and got his reward when Hurraira hung his bat out and edged to the keeper. It was followed up by a beauty to remove Kamran Ghulam, who had just dispatched an outswinger to the boundary. The next ball, he attempted to shoulder arms but it seamed back into him wickedly, rapping the thigh, with Hawk-Eye showing it would have clipped the top of off.Kamran Ghulam was lbw shouldering arms to Jayden Seales•PCBThe big fish came soon after, another glorious use of the seam. Seales hit a hard length which Babar looked to parry into the off side, but it shaped away just enough to kiss the outside edge through to Imlach. Babar would review, but, like Ghulam, he would not be reprieved. The innings threatened to fall apart at that point, but Saud Shakeel, seasoned on surfaces like these, restored some order to proceedings for Pakistan. The sting was taken out of the quicks and the spinners negotiated deftly, while Mohammad Rizwan at the other end kept his concentration levels up as West Indies continued to prowl. There was a notable acceleration from the pair after tea, right from when Shakeel got to his knees and swept Kevin Sinclair for four. It was a shot that brought the pair bounty through the session, giving them a release shot as the ball began to rip. The next six overs produced seven boundaries with Rizwan the chief aggressor, brave enough to use his feet to spin and ensuring the strike kept ticking over. There remained plenty for the visitors to get excited about. A number of balls beat the outside edge by a whisker, and Shakeel popped one up dangerously close to short midwicket just shy of a half-century. But when he got there, and Rizwan followed up soon after, the milestones were both well-deserved. By now, the light had been deteriorating consistently, and midway through Kraigg Brathwaite’s first over, the light-metre came out, and the players went off. By then, Pakistan were arguably the happier side, having been dragged by Rizwan and Shakeel towards a rather less perilous position than they found themselves in after the first hour.

Arsenal star wants to leave with Berta now "set to bid" for £52m replacement

Arsenal are now set to bid for a £52m player, who is being targeted as a direct replacement for a wantaway star, according to a reporter.

Gunners keen on another defender before deadline

The Gunners have already made major improvements to their squad this summer, with Mikel Arteta mainly setting out to bolster his attacking options, although Cristhian Mosquera was also brought in as a back-up to William Saliba and Gabriel at centre-back.

However, having now gotten the deal for Eberechi Eze over the line, with Andrea Berta orchestrating a stunning hijack of Tottenham Hotspur’s deal, the north Londoners now appear to have turned their attentions towards strengthening their defence.

A late move for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi has been discussed, although Liverpool looks like a more likely destination, given that the Englishman has reservations about playing second fiddle to Gabriel and Saliba.

As such, Arteta’s side have now moved on to alternative targets, and another sensational hijack could be on the cards, with journalist Ben Jacobs revealing Arsenal are now “set to bid” for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.

On Monday morning, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Tottenham have made a “new proposal” for Hincapie, with discussions over personal terms underway, but the Gunners have also entered the race, and Jacobs believes the Ecuadorian “favours” a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal reach agreement to sign "explosive" attacking gem after Eze deal

The Gunners are set to sign another attacker…

ByDominic Lund Aug 24, 2025

Berta is targeting the 23-year-old as a replacement for Jakub Kiwior, who wants to leave this summer, with a move to FC Porto on the cards, but the Gunners may have to spend big once again, as there is a €60m (£52m) release clause in the Leverkusen star’s contract.

Hincapie could be "perfect" signing for Arsenal

Scout Ben Mattinson has previously suggested the Leverkusen defender could be the “perfect” addition to Arteta’s squad, given that he is capable of playing at both left-back and left centre-back, which makes him a similar type of player to Kiwior.

The Poland international has also featured at left-back regularly throughout his career, and he clearly impressed Arteta last season, with the Arsenal boss dubbing the 25-year-old as “exceptional.”

However, with the defender eager to leave, there is no point standing in his way, particularly considering Hincapie could be an ideal replacement, having already racked up a considerable amount of experience at Leverkusen, making 166 appearances for the German club.

While obviously not their primary objective, it would also be fantastic for Arsenal to get another one over on their north London rivals, having already hijacked the move for Eze, who enjoyed a very impressive campaign with Palace last season.
