West Brom could sign their next Brunt in £0 promotion winner

Carlos Corberan will hope he can rely on his more experienced heads next season to steer another West Bromwich Albion to another attempt at winning promotion, with the likes of Kyle Bartley and more shining last campaign in the Championship.

It would have been a welcome relief to see the ex-Arsenal man put pen to paper on a new contract this summer, therefore, whilst the likes of Alex Mowatt, Jed Wallace and others scattered around the Baggies camp have been there and done that up and down the EFL across their careers to date.

Even more wily heads could be added to the Hawthorns camp soon…

West Brom interested in serial promotion winner

According to football journalist Michael Graham earlier this week, Sunderland were said to in the driver's seat over a deal for former Sheffield United midfielder Oliver Norwood this summer.

It comes after prior reports stated that West Brom are also in the queue to try and snap up the successful free agent.

Norwood has four promotions to the Premier League on his CV from the second tier, with two of those coming during a fruitful patch of his career in South Yorkshire, as West Brom now hope his expertise in moving up to the top flight can rub off the rest of the Baggies ranks.

Slipping up in the play-off semi-finals last campaign to eventual promotion winners Southampton, the Northern Irishman could also fill a gap left behind by Okay Yokuslu's potential departure, with talk centring in on the fact the Turkish midfielder could move back to his native country this off-season.

How Norwood can be West Brom's next Brunt

Norwood could act as a dependable and reliable figure in the centre of the park in a similar fashion to the way former West Brom great Chris Brunt used to operate too, with the now retired star also hailing from Northern Ireland, after going down in the Baggies hall of fame as an esteemed servant to the West Midlands club.

Brunt ended up amassing a ridiculous 421 games in total for West Brom, with his calm and experienced head constantly showing its worth, as he ended up maintaining a starting spot for the majority of his 13 seasons at the Hawthorns.

Norwood was able to be a similar safe figure to rely upon when still playing at Bramall Lane, with 27 games coming his way last season in the Premier League for Chris Wilder's men, despite entering the twilight of his career now at 33 years of age.

Only absent from two Championship games the last two full campaigns he's competed in, Norwood would be a welcome signing if a move can be agreed, with the West Midlands outfit previously in desperate need of measured heads that have won promotion when crashing out of the play-offs, having unfortunately crumbled at St. Mary's in a 3-1 second leg exit.

Brunt also managed to lift West Brom up to the Premier League three times when he was a constant part of the furniture at the Hawthorns, operating in a central midfield spot like Norwood on occasion, but mostly standing out down the flanks for his long-standing employers.

It must have been a sad severing of the ties for Norwood walking away from his fixed home in South Yorkshire this summer, but he could well get one over on his former club if he was to pick up a mind-boggling fifth promotion under Corberan this forthcoming campaign.

'Too little, too late' – Bruno Fernandes blasted for apology to axed Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag as Roy Keane questions midfielder's leadership

Roy Keane has questioned Bruno Fernandes' leadership as he blasted the Manchester United captain over his apology to Erik ten Hag.

Keane slams FernandesMan Utd captain apologised to Ten HagClub legend questioned skipper's leadershipFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

After United's 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Sunday at Old Trafford, Fernandes revealed that he had called up former coach Ten Hag and apologised to him personally after the Dutchman was shown the door last week. Fernandes refused to blame the manager alone for the club's miseries in the 2024-25 campaign, admitting the players were equally at fault.

The Red Devils skipper's gesture, however, did not go down well with club legend and pundit Keane, as he stated that the apology was "too little, too late". He also questioned the Portuguese midfielder's leadership skills while claiming he has failed to guide the team from the front.

WHAT ROY KEANE SAID

Speaking on , Keane said: "These are always awkward interviews for players but I wouldn’t have much time and patience for the player to say, ‘listen, sorry, we let you down’. Too little, too late. We’ll judge what you’re doing on the football pitch. I don’t think Bruno has done enough in a lot of the games already. He didn’t show that leadership. So it would be interesting to hear what Ten Hag has to say about it. But you also have to move on.

"A lot of players don’t care that much when a manager goes. They just focus on the next manager and get ready, look after themselves. Players can be selfish, we know that, but I don’t think Bruno has done enough as a captain of Man United over the last year or two to help the manager out. Far from it."

He added, "The proof’s there with all the results. It’s not just on Bruno, of course, but I don’t think he showed enough leadership skills when the going’s got tough with some of the performances. I don’t think Bruno should be too proud of himself, of what’s happened to the manager of the last week or two. I think the players let the manager down ultimately."

Mohammad Saifuddin, batsmen help Bangladesh sweep series

The inexperienced West Indies line-up managed just 177 in 44.2 and have not collected a single point for the ODI Super League

Vishal Dikshit25-Jan-2021The process was different but the result was similar. Chasing a total for the first time in the series, the inexperienced West Indies line-up came a cropper once again to manage just 177 in 44.2 against Bangladesh to lose the ODI series 3-0 and not collect a single point for the ODI Super League. With the top score again coming from Rovman Powell in the lower order, West Indies were no match for Bangladesh’s competitive 297 scored on the back of attacking half-centuries from Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah, and cautious fifties from Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan.Unlike in the first two ODIs, the West Indies batsmen showed more fight against the spinners but the twin strikes from Mustafizur Rahman early on, and then in the middle overs from Mohammad Saifuddin meant the visitors were hardly in the chase. No. 3 Nkrumah Bonner blocked one end for a long period and it was only him and Powell who provided any kind of resistance by facing over 40 balls each for contrasting scores of 31 and 47 respectively.Rahman was the first to strike when he had Kjorn Ottley caught behind for 1 and dismissed Sunil Ambris for the third time in the series. Spin soon came on from both ends and Mehidy Hasan Miraz got one to straighten from around the wicket that caught Kyle Mayers on the back foot for 11. Captain Jason Mohammed and Bonners saw through a boundary-less phase of 15 overs and a wicketless first spell from Shakib, but both batsmen fell in successive overs off Saifuddin, who returned to the XI and finished with 3 for 51. Powell was promoted to No. 6 but the asking rate was already over eight an over. He started with a six off his third ball and scored runs with much more freedom compared to the others yet again, only to delay the inevitable.Batting first for the first time this series, Iqbal’s 64 and Shakib’s 51 set the stage for Rahim and Mahmudullah to launch an attack at the end to collect 100 runs off the last ten overs and post their highest total at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.West Indies’ inexperienced attack couldn’t sustain the accuracy they showed at the start. Mahmudullah collected boundaries in the slog overs even as Alzarri Joseph kept things tight as the hosts targeted the inexperienced bowlers – Mahmudullah stayed unbeaten on 64 off 43 that had three fours and as many sixes, the big hits coming off debutant Keon Harding and Raymon Reifer. Harding’s none for 88 were the most expensive figures by a West Indies bowler on debut, overtaking Oshane Thomas’ 1 for 83 against India in 2018, including the last over of the innings which leaked 22 runs with two sixes and a no ball. The real push in the Bangladesh innings came once Rahim joined Shakib after 28 overs. With two consecutive fours, one a reverse sweep and the other a conventional one off left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, in his first ten balls, Rahim made it clear his plan was to accelerate. While Shakib played as many as 41 dots in his 81-ball stay, Rahim moved around in the crease for regular strike rotation and powered them past 250 when he muscled Reifer for two sixes on the leg side and launched Joseph over the covers for a four in between.Mohammad Saifuddin celebrates a wicket•AFP via Getty ImagesBangladesh were 252 with 22 balls left when Rahim was caught at cover. Mahmudullah finished the 47th over with two well-placed fours before Joseph and Reifer conceded only 13 runs off the next two overs, leaving Harding with the big task of bowling the last over on his international debut. Mahmudullah started it with a six over the covers for his 22nd ODI fifty, Soumya Sarkar was run-out two balls later before Saifuddin struck a four and Mahmudullah finished the innings with a six over long-on. That was not the end, though, as replays showed Harding had overstepped, and Mahmudullah collected two more runs to take the last-over tally to 22.West Indies had bowled much better earlier after opting to field. Joseph trapped Liton Das lbw with an in-ducker for a duck and first-change Mayers did the same for Najmul Hossain Shanto. Shakib and Iqbal played out a long boundary-less phase of 15 overs against the precision of Hosein and Reifer, who bowled stump to stump and just outside off in the absence of much movement on offer.Shakib broke the shackles with a late cut for four to third man and Iqbal followed it with a spectacular six over the covers against Jason in the next over. Joseph briefly gave West Indies a chance of putting the hosts on the back foot when he had Iqbal caught at midwicket with a short-ball plan but the attacking mindset Rahim brought didn’t give the visitors a chance.West Indies will also rue the seven wides Harding sent down and the return catch Mayers put down off the first ball Shakib faced in the ninth over of the innings, right after Shanto’s wicket, although it was a touch chance in the bowler’s follow through.

Better dribbler than Grealish: Aston Villa could land £46m Rogers upgrade

Unai Emery is leading Aston Villa into an illustrious future. Over the past few years, the Premier League outfit has gone from strength to strength, rising from its struggling spot at the floor of the English top flight and enjoying football on the continent.

Qualifying for the Conference League at the end of the 2022/23 campaign was a momentous moment for a club on the rise, but Villa simply had a taste of success and wanted more.

Now, last season's top-four finish has opened up a world of opportunity, and despite the need to swerve PSR sticking points, cashing in on Douglas Luiz to avoid a financial penalty, the Lions have been active in the market, making a wealth of signings.

Douglas-Luiz-Aston-Villa

Of course, Moussa Diaby's proposed sale to Al-Ittihad is the current story at Villa Park, but Monchi has already identified the dream replacement and is hoping to hijack a top European side's move to bring him in.

Aston Villa transfer news

According to TEAMtalk – as reported earlier this week – Aston Villa have held talks with Nico Williams as they incredibly plot to hijack Barcelona's £46m deal for the Spain star.

The Athletic Bilbao winger has been one of football's hottest commodities after lighting Euro 2024 up en route to winning the trophy, and Villa are seeking to exploit their newfound position in the Champions League to turn the odds in their favour.

With Diaby moving to the Saudi Pro League for around £60m, the coin is in the purse to move ahead with this stunning signing.

What Nico Williams would bring to Aston Villa

Even the most optimistic of Aston Villa supporters might raise an eyebrow at their club's chance of pipping Barcelona and the like to Williams' signing, but the groundwork has been paved.

In January 2023, Villa failed to entice a teenage Williams to move to the Premier League despite meeting his release clause, and while that attempt was botched, it could hold sway as they look to go again.

He was a superstar for his nation, though frankly, this was just a continuation of the efforts made for Bilbao over the past year, notching 27 goal contributions from 37 fixtures across all competitions last season, instrumental as the Basque side ended a 40-year trophy drought as they conquered the Copa del Rey.

As per FBref, he ranked among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues last season for assists, the top 7% for progressive carries and the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90, highlighting the imperious athletic ability that journalist Antonio Mango has described as "mind-blowing".

It's so impressive, in fact, that Williams' 3.42 successful take-ons per 90 over the past year rocket above that of Manchester City's Jack Grealish, who employs one of the silkiest ball-carrying games in Europe, though averaged 1.40 per 90 of the same metric.

Grealish, moreover, succeeded with 62% of his attempted dribbles in the Premier League last term but averaged 0.9 per game. While this is principally due to the system that Pep Guardiola implements, restricting such freedom of movement, it's hard to argue against Williams on current ranking – especially when considering that the 21-year-old averaged 2.8 dribbles per outing in La Liga.

Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers

Signed, he would unquestionably walk right into Emery's starting 11, and while this would come at the expense of Morgan Rogers' hopes to solidify a regular starting berth, it would only serve to lift Villa even higher in their fight to reach the pinnacle of European football.

How Williams compares to Morgan Rogers

Villa signed Rogers, 21, in a deal rising to £16m in January, plucking the talented winger from Middlesbrough after being coloured impressed by his electric, snappy performances. A product of Man City's unrelenting academy belt, the England U21 international "developed hugely in less than three months" following his move – as per The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell – now a crucial part of Emery's first-team plans.

Rogers scored three goals and added an assist in the Premier League last season, starting eight times, and caught the eye with his dribbling skills, averaging 1.5 per game.

His tactical fluidity is a big bonus. He's nicely rounded, creative and combative, ranking among the top 8% of positional peers for assists and the top 17% for tackles per 90, but he's simply not on Williams' level, who eclipses him in both regards. Take note of the Spaniard's aforementioned goal contributions.

Morgan Rogers

This is not to say that signing Williams would preclude the £20k-per-week winger's chances of succeeding in the Midlands, rather, relegate him to a second-class standing on the flank, albeit with plenty of time and opportunity to make his mark and continue his remarkable rise.

Let's not forget, having sanctioned Diaby's sale and previously swerved the ire of PSR after cashing in on Luiz and academy graduates Tim Iroegbunam and Omari Kellyman, such a deal is firmly within the realm of possibility.

Villa, if there is a chance to do so, have to sign Williams this summer. It could be the watershed moment in Emery's quest to take the club back to the most golden of one-time glory days.

Spurs struck gold on "incredible" signing now worth way more than Toney

As debut seasons go, it'd be fair to describe Ange Postecoghlou's with Tottenham Hotspur as a success.

The Australian was tasked with turning a team that looked lost under Antonio Conte into one that played entertaining football and genuinely challenged the big boys once again – oh, and he had to do it without Harry Kane.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

However, to improve further next season, the club now need to back him in the transfer market and bring him the new number nine he is reportedly desperate for.

There have been numerous links to top strikers over the last couple of months, but perhaps none more than Brentford's Ivan Toney, who could be a transformational acquisition.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

However, while the Englishman would likely be incredible for the Lilywhites, it's unlikely that his valuation will surpass that of one of his potential new teammates.

The latetst on Toney to Spurs

According to reports from earlier this week, the two clubs most likely to land Toney's signature at the moment are Tottenham and West Ham United, and with the latter looking at other options as well, the North Londoners have become favourites.

Moreover, according to a report from talkSPORT (via the Spurs Web), the Englishman is actively hoping that the North Londoners will come in with an offer for him this summer.

Now, what that offer ends up being remains to be seen, but it's unlikely to be in excess of £50m as the Sun reported last week that the Bees had reduced their asking price to below that figure as they look to avoid losing him for free next summer.

That's still a reasonably hefty fee for a player in the final year of his contract, but considering his record over the last three years, it's a justified one.

In his first campaign following promotion from the Championship, he produced 20 goal involvements in 37 games; the second year, it was even better at 26 in 35 games, and while last year saw him produce just six in 17 matches, which was primarily due to missing most of the campaign for his eight-month betting related ban.

In all, with Postecoglou crying out for a new number nine this summer, spending up to £50m on Toney seems like a no-brainer, although even at that fee, he'll be worth less than one of his most important potential new teammates.

James Maddison's valuation in 2024

Yes, the Spurs star in question is last summer's marque signing James Maddison, whose move from Leicester City cost around £40m.

However, as things stand, Transfermarkt values the Englishman at around €70m, which converts to around £59m, or at least £9m more than the Brentford star may cost.

There are likely a couple of reasons for this valuation, the first of which is that his £170k-per-week contract is set to run until summer 2028, meaning there is no need for the club to consider selling him or re-upping his deal anytime soon.

The second reason is that while he didn't have the best of campaigns towards the end of last season, he still looked great at points and racked up four goals and nine assists in 30 appearances, and in the previous three years, he has racked up 62 goals and assists in 115 games.

Lastly, his underlying numbers are still seriously impressive.

According to FBref, which compares players in similar positions in Europe's top five leagues, the "incredible" 27-year-old, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, sits in the top 1% of midfielders for shot-creating actions and progressive passes, the top 2% for attempted passes and the top 7% for assists, all per 90.

Ultimately, Toney would be an exceptional signing for Spurs, but he'll have to go some way to surpass Maddison's valuation.

Liverpool working 'feverishly' in bid to keep hold of star trio Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk as ex-Reds chief offers update on contract talks

Three key players could leave as free agentsUncertainty looms over their futureEx-CEO shared inside information on contract talksFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool are already navigating a transitional period following the departure of long-serving manager Jürgen Klopp in the summer and Arne Slot being tasked with leading the club into a new era. Now, the looming expiry of the trio’s contracts has sparked widespread concern among fans, with many questioning how Liverpool allowed three of their most pivotal players to enter the final months of their deals without resolutions.

AdvertisementAFPWHAT EX-CEO PETER MOORE SAID

Former Liverpool CEO Peter Moore, who served during the club’s Champions League triumph in 2019 and Premier League victory in 2020, shed light on the contract situation. Speaking at Soccerex, Moore compared the current uncertainty to past challenges, recalling the departure of Kevin Keegan in the 1970s and how the club rebounded with the signing of Kenny Dalglish.

"I am old enough to remember Kevin Keegan going to Hamburg, thinking the world was collapsing around us," he said. "Who are we going to give the ball to? Then somebody said we have got this guy from Celtic: [Kenny] Dalglish. I don't know what's going to happen. If it's Trent, it's Virgil, it's Mo. It's hard to imagine any of those leaving Liverpool. Ownership, I know is working feverishly to get deals done, whether it is all three, two of the three, one of the three or none of the three.

"I don't know, but you look at those players and what you do like is that they all seem very dedicated right now. There is no – particularly with those three – taking a game off for some reason. Even in Trent's case, they are the senior citizens. You think about what they offer, and come January, in particular in Trent's case, we will see what happens. But I know ownership is talking with their respective agents – I'm sure feverishly."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

While fans hold out hope that all three players will extend their contracts, speculation about potential exits persists. Alexander-Arnold, in particular, has been linked with Real Madrid, with Los Blancos reportedly viewing him as a successor to Dani Carvajal. Meanwhile, Salah has suitors in Saudi Arabia who will be eager to bring the Egyptian to the burgeoning Pro League to add more star power.

Late charge by Sherfane Rutherford, Wahab Riaz hands Peshawar Zalmi victory

Haider Ali fifty helps their cause in second win from three matches

Sreshth Shah26-Feb-2021Having lost their first two games, Quetta Gladiators looked set to end their streak of defeats on Friday night, but a late charge from Sherfane Rutherford and Wahab Riaz took the game away from them and handed Peshawar Zalmi their second win in three matches.Zalmi’s chase of 199 was the highest of the season and it was the eighth-straight game in PSL 2021 where the chasing side won. The result takes the Zalmi to second on the points table while the Gladiators remain rock bottom. After being asked to bat, Gladiators posted 198 for 7 on the back of a 105-run partnership between Sarfaraz Ahmed and Azam Khan. Sarfaraz, the Gladiators captain, hit 81 at a strike-rate of over 200 and Azam hit 47 in 26 balls. For most of the second innings, the target seemed too tough to achieve, but some wayward bowling in the death overs from Mohammad Hasnain and Dale Steyn changed the game’s complexion. For Zalmi, Haider Ali struck a 29-ball 50 while Imam Ul Haq and Shoaib Malik made useful contributions. But it was their lower-order batsmen, Rutherford and Riaz, who were the difference. Rutherford creamed 36 in his unbeaten 18-ball innings, while Riaz made amends for his poor bowling show – where he conceded 52 runs in four overs – by hammering 20 off just eight deliveries to seal a come-from-behind win.du Plessis sets Gladiators’ foundationPlaying his first game of the PSL season, and fresh out of quarantine, Faf du Plessis came in at No. 3 for the Gladiators in the first innings after opener Cameron Delport fell for 2 in the third over. After taking a few balls to settle in, he got off the blocks by hammering Mohammad Irfan for four in the fourth over. When Irfan returned for the sixth over, du Plessis clobbered a six and two fours to end the Powerplay on a positive note for the Gladiators. With Saim Ayub, the other opener, struggling to time the ball, it was du Plessis who ensured the early run rate did not fall below seven. But after Ayub’s dismissal – run out by a direct hit from Rutherford – du Plessis looked to take the anchor role because Sarfaraz began aggressively. However, du Plessis perished in the 11th over for his 26-ball 37 when he holed out at deep extra cover, deceived by a Riaz slower ball.Faf du Plessis looked elegant in his first PSL game of the season•Pakistan Super LeagueSarfaraz, Azam maul Zalmi bowlersWith 58 balls left in the innings and the score 86 for 3, back-up wicketkeeper Azam joined regular wicketkeeper and captain Sarfaraz in the middle. Sarfaraz began the early charge by playing a late cut off Riaz for four. Azam then found his feet, hitting England fast bowler Saqib Mahmood for back-to-back fours to end the 13th over. When Riaz returned for his second spell in the 15th, Azam hit him for a 98m six before smashing two fours to the backward-point region for 16 runs off the over. The 16th from Mujeeb then went for 18 as Sarfaraz found the cover boundary, after which Azam hit a four and a six straight past the Afghan fingerspinner. The 17th from Mahmood then went for nine as Sarfaraz reached his fifty in 31 balls.Sarfaraz then hit Irfan for three fours in the 18th to take the run-rate towards 10. With the Zalmi bowling unit looking deflated, Sarfaraz smashed Riaz next for 18 runs in four deliveries in the 19th. However, he fell off the last ball trying to clear the straight boundary. The fourth-wicket partnership came in just 55 balls. At 193 for 4, and with six balls left, Gladiators were set to breach 200, but Mahmood returned with three wickets in his final over. He dismissed Azam, Ben Cutting and Mohammad Nawaz to finish with 3 for 34. But overall the Zalmi bowlers had a day to forget with Riaz (2 for 54) delivering his most expensive T20 spell, Mujeeb going at 11 per over and Irfan conceding nearly 40 in his four. At the halfway mark, Gladiators’ 198 for 7 was the highest PSL 2021 total.Gladiators strike early with the ballZalmi struggled early in the chase. After an entertaining first over from Steyn and a quick one from Hasnain, the Gladiators saw the back of Kamran Akmal after the batsman sliced Usman Shinwari to deep point in the third over. Although Imam kept the scoreboard ticking, the No. 3 Tom Kohler-Cadmore failed to make an impact from the other end, falling to Steyn when the last ball of an extras-filled fourth over ended with his dismissal.Imam, Haider, Malik give Zalmi hopeImam then found Haider for company. Together they hit a swift fifty stand for the third wicket. Both batsmen found boundaries at will, but Imam fell in the tenth over when he tried to come down the ground to Zahid Mahmood. Mahmood, seeing Imam come down the ground, dropped his length and the ball went under the bat to hit the stumps. The score, midway through the 11th over, read 79 for 3.Haider, though, did now slow down, and with the experienced Shoaib Malik as his partner, they together kept hitting boundaries to keep the required run-rate in check. Malik’s first boundary shot was a six over Cutting’s head in the 11th over while Haider took on Shinwari in the 13th. Haider followed up a six with two fours off Shinwari to rattle the Gladiators enough that Sarfaraz could be seen talking at length with the bowler in an animated manner. The 14th from Zahid then went for double digits as Malik attacked the straight boundary. But the 52-run stand ended when Haider was outfoxed by a Steyn slower ball in his return spell at the start of the 15th over.Rutherford, Riaz pull off a heist…with a little helpAt the fall of Haider’s wicket, Zalmi still needed 68 runs in 35 balls. Steyn finished the 15th over conceding only five and shifted the momentum Gladiators’ way after which Cutting trapped Malik lbw in the 16th. That put the Gladiators in the driver’s seat with Zalmi needing 41 off 18.Rutherford, though, then hit two consecutive sixes off Hasnain’s 18th over to bring the equation down to 27 off 12 as the bowler missed his slot. The advantage was still with Zalmi as Steyn prepared to bowl the 19th, but he was sent packing for three sixes, one from Rutherford and two by Riaz. That made it a run-a-ball scenario for Zalmi off the last over. Hasnain got a yorker in to dismiss Riaz and Mahmood was run out for a first-ball duck, but then the young bowler delivered a wide that went for four, effectively ending the game.Needing 1 off four balls, Rutherford creamed a drive through the covers to seal Zalmi’s win with three balls to spare. Rutherford finished with 36 off 18 balls but it was Haider who collected the Player-of-the-Match award for his half-century in a winning cause.

ST. LOUIS – "I appreciate you giving me credit for that!"

Christian Pulisic may have appreciated the question, crediting him for opening up space on an eventual U.S. men's national team goal against Jamaica, but he wasn't really willing to give that credit to himself. It was his run that opened up the space Ricardo Pepi needed to score the USMNT's third goal on Monday night. If not for Pulisic occupying the centerbacks, Pepi likely wouldn't have had that extra half-second or so to pick his spot in the back of the net.

Pepi, of course, deserves most of the credit. It was a fantastic finish, one that only a confident striker can provide. Pulisic – who had already accounted for the first two goals in the USMNT's eventual 4-2 win over Jamaica Monday night – played his part, and he did so to perfection by manipulating the defenders in front of him.

But looking back at the sequence, Pulisic had a confession to make: he didn't make that run for Pepi, he made it for himself.

"I did," Pulisic said with a laugh when asked if he really wanted the pass for himself. "I wanted that hat trick."

Regardless, that moment showed the power and impact Pulisic has in games. It was the type of sequence that perfectly encapsulated what an in-form player can do. When you're playing at an elite level, it makes life easier for everyone else – including manager Mauricio Pochettino, who continues to implement his tactics on this USMNT, with Pulisic at the center of it all.

And as Pulisic continues to ride that form for club and country, Pepi's goal showed how having a superstar such as Pulisic in the team can make everyone else better.

gettyPulisic's ridiculous form

It doesn't matter what jersey Pulisic is wearing the moment, if he's on the field, you can expect him to create goals.

In 15 matches for Milan this season, Pulisic already has seven goals and four assists. He's established himself as one of the most dangerous players in Serie A, while his goals against Liverpool and Real Madrid continue to further the narrative that he genuinely a big-game player. He's been in the best form of his life and he looks happier than he's ever been on the club level.

That's carried over to the USMNT, too. In five appearances since the Copa America, Pulisic has two goals and two assists while creating a Jamaica own-goal. There's been no slowdown when he's crossed the Atlantic. In fact, you could argue he's been even better in the red, white and blue than the red and black since the Serie A season started.

Prior to his first game in charge in October, Pochettino praised Pulisic plenty, pointing to that initial run of good form. Pulisic has sustained it and, thus far, he's likely even exceeded his new coach's expectations.

"I think he's a fantastic player," Pochettino said in October. "One of the best offensive players in the world."

Pulisic certainly made that case in St. Louis on Monday, as he tore Jamaica to shreds.

Pulisic's second goal was eventually taken from him and called an own goal, unfortunately for him. Still, it's worth hyping up Pulisic's first against Jamaica given the quality of finish.

The moment Weston McKennie received the ball on the right-hand side, Pulisic knew what to do. He darted towards goal, breezing past Jamaica's defense. McKennie picked his head up, saw the run and pinged a pass in Pulisic's direction. Controlling it was no easy feat, but Pulisic did more than that; he flicked it on the half-volley, leaving Reggae Boyz goalkeeper Andre Blake helpless as the ball trickled into the back of the net.

"When Weston gets the ball and he picks his head up, I feel like I might be his first target," Pulisic said. "He floated that ball in perfectly."

Pulisic, though, deserves credit for the finish. It was one few players could provide. To have the confidence, the decisiveness and the quality to find the back of the net in that situation – that speaks to Pulisic's level.

And, when playing at that level, Pulisic makes life better for others, which leads us back to that Pepi goal.

IMAGNMaking runs for others

Pulisic won't get credit for an assist for Pepi's goal in St. Louis. He didn't directly set it up in the same way that he did in Kingston when his through-ball into the path of the PSV star led to the USMNT's only goal in a 1-0 victory.

The AC Milan star sure helped, though.

As Pepi receives the ball, Pulisic runs right past him. Jamaica defender Richard King spots that run and, for a split second, focuses on Pulisic. His feet shift towards the winger before he sees Pepi lining up to shoot. At that point, it's too late. Pepi lines up his shot and picks out his corner, making it 3-0 to the USMNT with a fantastic finish from just outside the box.

"I think he's a super important player for a team with how he scores," Pepi said. "The defender went and he stepped towards Christian, and he left me a lot of space. You also can't leave me that space, you know! I see that space, and then I can just shoot and score that goal."

All Pepi needed was that half-second. He's good enough to take advantage of it, as are a number of Pulisic's USMNT teammates. When a player with Pulisic's skill is making runs like that, he buys them that half-second because he puts defenders in an impossible position. Do they focus on Pulisic, the most dangerous player on the field, or the player with the ball? Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

"I think I try to do that a lot," Pulisic says. "I think it's really important: creating space for others. Sometimes you make runs that are not for you to get the ball and that's just normal for me. I have to do it and create space for him in that moment."

Superstars are often measured by how they make those around them better, and Pulisic is showing that. Most importantly, he's showing it in ways that are indirect.

Yes, the goals and assists are great, but, unless you're Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, there will be dry spells there. You can't always control those. You can always control effort and energy, though, and, if Pulisic continues to make runs like he did on Monday, it'll be a huge lift for club and country.

Back in Milan, all eyes are starting to shift towards Pulisic. It's been like that for years with the USMNT, but it's a relatively new phenomenon for Pulisic on the club level. At Milan, he's surrounded by talent, and every eye on Pulisic is one less on Rafael Leao. It's one less defender not fully accounting for Samuel Chukwueze's pace. It's one split second that allows Alvaro Morata, Noah Okafor or Tammy Abraham to slide into space that wouldn't have been there otherwise.

It's what makes the game's greats so powerful: that gravitational pull. The more Pulisic scores and assists, the stronger it gets, and the stronger it gets, the more his teammates benefit. If becoming a leading goalscorer was the next step for Pulisic, this is the next, next step – creating space, excelling with and without the ball, using his growing reputation and elevated form to now help others.

We saw an example of that in St. Louis, and we'll likely see more of it for Milan in the coming months. Pulisic won't be back in a USMNT jersey again until March, which means the focus is entirely on lifting his club back to old heights. Milan clearly believe Pulisic can be one of the pieces to lead that charge, whether by doing it on his own or making the game easier for others.

Celtic identify £6k-p/w ace as new midfield target amid O’Riley interest

Celtic have identified a potential new signing this summer as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of the new Scottish Premiership season, but may only make the move should talisman Matt O'Riley depart the club before the transfer deadline.

O'Riley a man in demand

After an excellent season with Celtic that saw him scoop Celtic's Player of the Year, the Player's Player of the Year and the club's Young Player of the Year, Matt O'Riley may have played his last competitive match for Celtic amid increasing interest from across Europe.

The Danish midfielder finished second only to Lawrence Shankland in the Premiership goalscoring charts, while no one could match his 13 assists across the season, with five more coming across other competitions.

Atletico Madrid had an offer turned down for the 23-year-old in January, and Europa League winners Atalanta have seen three turned down this summer as they push to land him as a replacement for the seemingly outgoing Teun Koopmeiners.

Quizzed on O'Riley's Parkhead future, Brendan Rodgers admitted that he was quite relaxed about the situation, but that "every player has a value" in a hint that O'Riley could well leave this summer.

"There's no update, fairly relaxed," Rodgers told a news conference. "He knows the privilege it is to play for Celtic. Celtic is a club where you can move on but you don't have to and it's a very difficult club to move on from.

"Naturally, with the wages that are on offer for players, that makes it a real challenge for Celtic to compete at that level. He knows what he has here. We're all quite relaxed with it. Every player has a value, we know that."

Now, Celtic have identified a potential replacement in midfield for their talisman.

Celtic eye up £6,000-a-week midfielder

That comes in the shape of former Manchester City academy graduate Shea Charles, who moved to Southampton 12 months ago in a deal worth £15m. The 20-year-old, who takes home £6,000 a week on the South Coast, made 38 appearances in his debut season for the Saints, including 32 in the Championship.

He is considered an excellent prospect, with Pep Guardiola dubbing him "so good" when making his Manchester City debut at the end of the 2022-23 season.

“Shea Charles against this team with top, top strikers, fast and strong, it’s not the easiest debut", the Cityzens head coach explained. “We know him, he trains quite regularly with us, he’s so good, so composed."

Now, The Sun claim that Celtic are keen on the midfielder, who has appeared 17 times for Northern Ireland, and add that they could even look to land Charles on loan with an option to buy. An alternative could be to add him as part of any deal for O'Riley, with Southampton having already seen one bid rejected for the midfielder according to the report.

It remains to be seen whether Celtic opt to firm up their interest, though any move will likely hinge on the future of O'Riley given the fee likely to be needed to land Charles.
