Zak Crawley's classy century puts Kent on top

Batsman Crawley and bowler Brookes show more than a hint of good things to come

It’s often said – and it’s often said correctly – that these early season Championship games provide little value in the production of Test cricketers. All too often such matches are defined by the seam-friendly surfaces on which they are played and dominated by medium-paced bowlers who exploit those conditions. It can be entertaining, certainly, but it doesn’t bear much comparison with conditions prevalent in Test cricket. But on a fine, straw-coloured surface a young batsman from Kent and a young bowler from Warwickshire not only fought out an enjoyable battle for control of this game, but provided encouragement for the future of England’s Test team.On the day, the battle was won by Zak Crawley. In producing the second first-class century of his career, the 21-year-old provided notice of both his ability and strength of mind in helping his side to a strong position in the match. The first thing you notice about Crawley is his height. Standing at six foot, six inches he clearly has the reach to smother deliveries others cannot and a pleasing ability to deal – usually dismissively – with the short ball. But it is, perhaps, the straightness of his play and judgement over which balls to leave which marks him out as slightly unusual in the day and age of the dasher. He can play, elegantly, off front and back foot and has both a range of stroke and patience that bode well for his future. Those who know him at Kent talk of his ambition and, while it is premature of talk of an England call-up, James Taylor, watching on in his role as an England selector, can only have been impressed. While the figures hardly suggest it, Henry Brookes was almost as encouraging. Aged just 19 and playing the seventh first-class game of his career, he was the quickest of Warwickshire’s attack and, in generating swing and bounce, underlined the huge hopes his club have of him.Given just a little fortune, he would have dismissed Crawley for 46. The ball he produced, demanding a stroke and leaving the batsman late, was pretty much perfect. But Dom Sibley, at second slip, was unable to cling on to a tough, low chance which may not quite have reached him. It may yet prove to be a pivotal moment in the game. Sibley also dropped Darren Stevens, on 14, in the dying moments of the day. That moment apart, the only other time Crawley appeared troubled was as he neared his century. The nerves clearly began to tell as the milestone approach and it wasn’t a complete surprise when, shortly after reaching it (from 165 balls with 17 fours), he was caught behind off the inside edge as Jeetan Patel gained just a little turn to take advantage of an uncharacteristic gate between bat and pad. There were half-centuries, too, from Heino Kuhn and Ollie Robinson. While Kuhn’s was no surprise – he has played international cricket, after all – 20-year-old Robinson lost little by comparison. This was easily his best innings at this level to date and, in timing the ball sweetly, he suggested he could enjoy a long career at this level.Warwickshire may feel they could have bowled tighter. While their bowlers beat the edge on several occasions – once the first new ball went out of shape and was replaced by one that swung, anyway – there were a few too many release deliveries to build any meaningful pressure. There were moments when they seemed to get it all together – not least in a spell when they claimed three for 35 in mid-afternoon – but a stand of 119 for the fifth-wicket between Kuhn and Robinson ensured that Kent could look back on their decision to bat first – something of a rarity at this time of year – with satisfaction.Earlier Sean Dickson poked one to gully, Matt Renshaw was drawn into driving one that left him sharply – Craig Miles’ first Championship wicket for his new team – and Daniel Bell-Drummond edged one that left him slightly. Kent wore black armbands throughout the day in honour of Bell-Drummond’s older brother, Paul, who died on Wednesday after an illness. With Warwickshire suffering from something of an injury epidemic, they recalled Tom Milnes, a seamer they had released in 2015. Milnes subsequently joined Derbyshire but was also released by them in 2017. He had trials at a few counties in 2018 – and played a few games for Sussex seconds – but is now with Warwickshire on a match-by-match basis. He may win more opportunities in the coming weeks. Chris Woakes will play a one-day game for the seconds next week, but is not expected to play any first-class cricket ahead of the World Cup, while Olly Stone has just been cleared to start his rehabilitation after sustaining a stress fracture and is not expected to be available until mid-season. Aaron Thomason, who would have played here but for a pectoral injury, is out for between four to six weeks, with Liam Norwell out for roughly the same amount of time. There were some familiar faces at Edgbaston, too. With a book – The Greatest Season, by Pat Murphy – being launched to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Warwickshire’s treble-winning season, several of that team’s players were gathered to mark the occasion and hold a Q&A session with supporters. Those involved included the likes of Dermot Reeve, Gladstone Small and Asif Din. Ashley Giles, at the time a junior member of the Warwickshire staff, but now the director of England’s men’s teams, came along to sit quietly at the back and listen.

'It's absurd!' – Ederson rages at 'unacceptable' Rodri Player of the Season snub as he insists Man City enforcer should be fighting Phil Foden for top Premier League prize

The Premier League revealed the names of the eight nominees for this season's Player of the Season Award last week, which features two Manchester City stars: Erling Haaland and Phil Foden. The other players to feature in the list are Martin Odegaard, Alexander Isak, Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Virgil van Dijk and Ollie Watkins.

Man City goalkeeper Ederson was happy to see two of his team-mates being nominated for the prestigious award, however, he questioned the absence of Rodri from the shortlist and deemed the Spaniard's snub as 'unacceptable'. Pep Guardiola's side, who are in contention to win their fourth consecutive Premier League title, lost just three matches in the current campaign against Arsenal, Wolves and Aston Villa, with all three defeats coming while Rodri was suspended.

WHAT EDERSON SAID

Speaking to , the custodian said, "There are good players, but I see Rodri as a great candidate who isn't on the list. I don't understand why he's not on the list either. Honestly, that's unacceptable. If you look at his year, his campaign, the last few seasons he's been playing and see that he's not on the list, it's absurd. I don't know what criteria they use to nominate players, but there are also great players competing.

"But I see Rodri as a great candidate to win and unfortunately, he's not on the list. So I think I'll be rooting for Phil to win because Phil is also having a great season, he's helped us a lot. This season he's scored more goals, provided more assists, been more consistent and more important to the team too."

Aston Villa could sign "complete" £25m Leon Bailey rival

Aston Villa secured progression to the fourth round of the FA Cup over the weekend as they banished the demons of 2023 when they suffered a shock defeat to Stevenage Town at the same stage.

Unai Emery made sure that mistake didn’t repeat itself, and he can now focus on the Premier League for another few weeks.

The January transfer window is also in full swing and if the Spaniard is looking to end Villa’s 28-year trophy drought this term, he may want to bolster his squad this month and there have already been a few names linked with a move to the Midlands.

Aston Villa transfer news – Crysencio Summerville

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke in his latest Football Insider column, Villa are big admirers of Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville, who has lit up the Championship this season.

They aren’t the only Premier League outfit keen on signing him, however, as Brighton and Hove Albion are rivalling Villa, while even Liverpool have shown interest of late, making him a hot commodity.

Aston Villa transfer target Crysencio Summerville in action for Leeds United.

Leeds are reportedly unlikely to accept an offer this month due to the fact they are trying to achieve promotion, but if their form drops, their stance could change heading into the summer with Dean Jones telling GIVEMESPORT last year that a £25m fee may well be required.

Emery can call on Leon Bailey and Moussa Diaby to perform on the right wing, yet the Frenchman has tended to operate in a more advanced role this term and making a move for Summerville could give Bailey a rival for a spot on the flank.

Latest Aston Villa transfer news: Unai eyes £40m deal; Saudi club want star

It’s a huge summer for Aston Villa and Unai Emery as they prepare for the Champions League.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 11, 2024 How Crysencio Summerville compares to Leon Bailey

Bailey has enjoyed a new lease of life under Emery this term, with the winger registering 17 goal contributions – nine goals and eight assists – across 27 matches.

Additionally, the former Bayer Leverkusen gem is also ranked fifth in the Villa squad for big chances created (five) and third for successful dribbles per game (1.2), proving that it isn’t just goals he is contributing to the team.

These statistics are excellent, yet Summerville’s numbers during the same time period suggest that he could be a worthy challenger to Bailey with regards to a role on the right wing.

rutter-summerville-leeds-opinion

The talented Dutchman has shone this term so far, registering 12 goals and six assists in just 23 second-tier matches as he aims to propel Leeds back to the promised land.

The £16k-per-week starlet currently ranks first in the squad for goals and assists (18), along with ranking second for big chances created (12), first for key passes per game (three) and for successful dribbles per game (2.6), clearly showcasing more than just a clinical nature in front of goal.

These statistics are actually better than what Bailey has registered, albeit the 22-year-old is playing in a lower division, which has to be considered.

Summerville's 2023/24 statistics.

He did score four times in the top flight last season, which is a far cry from his wonderful numbers in 2023/24, but it certainly indicates that he can make the step up when required.

Journalist Suleyman Özturk dubbed him “complete” last October and Emery could get Bailey sweating by making a move for the Dutch sensation in the near future.

Why Michael Olise transfer could be accelerated amid Crystal Palace star's links to Man Utd and Chelsea – explained

Michael Olise's potential transfer away from Crystal Palace could be accelerated this summer amid a furore surrounding his agent.

Olise linked with major movePalace star wanted by Manchester United and ChelseaAgent facing up to banWHAT HAPPENED?

Olise has been the subject of interest from across the Premier League after a stunning season that has seen him score 10 goals and provide five assists in just 18 games. Manchester United are said to be leading the race ahead of Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool and there may well be a clock ticking on the deal.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE EXPLANATION

Per Olise's agent, Glen Tweneboah, has been given a six-month ban by the FA after an investigation into a contract that was agreed with Reading in 2019. Tweneboah still represents Olise, and has been charged with misconduct after Olise signed a three-year professional contract in 2019. The agent ensured within the agreement that he would be eligible for a 10% cut of any future transfer fee, something that is prohibited within the FA's rules. His ban, however, does not come into effect until October, which may well grease the wheels of a transfer for Olise this summer.

DID YOU KNOW?

Olise began his career at Reading, making 73 appearances before earning an £8 million ($10m) move to Palace. The Eagles stand to profit hugely this summer, as he is now valued at around £60m ($76m).

Royal Challengers Bangalore finally have a victory to show for all their efforts this season, but are they being too reliant on Kohli, de Villiers and Chahal?

The Preview by Vishal Dikshit in Mumbai14-Apr-2019Big pictureRoyal Challengers Bangalore finally have a victory to show for all their efforts this season. They chased down 174 in the last over against Kings XI Punjab in Mohali on Saturday night, and have quickly flown to Mumbai for their next clash. The question that faces them next is – can they win without always relying on Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Yuzvendra Chahal? On Saturday, Kohli and de Villiers scored half-centuries, and Chahal was the only bowler to take two wickets. In their seven matches so far, only Kohli and de Villiers have scored over 200 runs and Chahal is leading the wickets chart by a mile, having taken 11, Mohammed Siraj is next with six but a much higher economy rate of nearly 9.50 runs per over compared to Chahal’s 7.07. So what happens against Mumbai Indians on Monday, or for the rest of Royal Challengers’ campaign, if one of these top batsmen fails, or picks a niggle, and if Chahal has a bad day or two?Mumbai, meanwhile, have started an IPL season well for a change. They are in the top four halfway through the tournament and shouldn’t be worrying much after the loss to Rajasthan Royals on Saturday when they ended up turning into spectators during Jos Buttler’s 43-ball 89 on a batting-friendly track. But their pace attack leaking too many runs will be a concern, along with the injury Alzarri Joseph picked up while fielding, and the catches they put down towards the end against Royals. With a solid squad in the dugout, they only need to tighten a few loose ends to start winning again. In the newsWith Joseph out of the tournament after hurting his right shoulder while fielding at long-off against Royals, Lasith Malinga will be a straight swap back in the XI.Previous meetingIn what is turning out to be a controversial IPL especially when it comes to no-balls, Mumbai and Royal Challengers were the first witnesses when Malinga overstepped in their first meeting this season, the umpire didn’t spot it and Kohli was left fuming at the presentation. Chahal has dismissed Quinton de Kock thrice in 19 balls and conceded only 24 runs, across T20s. Against Rohit Sharma, Chahal has given only 29 runs off 31 balls, with one dismissal. Rohit will, as always, be itching to unleash Krunal Pandya as soon as de Villiers comes out to bat. The left-arm bowler has dismissed the in-form batsman as many as four times while conceding 41 runs in as many balls. The key, however, will also be to hold Krunal’s brother back when de Villiers is batting. Hardik has been carted by de Villiers for 72 runs off only 29 balls in all T20s. Kohli has impressive records against Malinga (91 runs off 71 balls, no dismissals) and Jasprit Bumrah (112 runs off 72 balls, two dismissals) but not against Mitchell McClenaghan. Mumbai could include McClenaghan in their XI in place of Jason Behrendorff, who leaked 31 runs in three overs against Royals, because the New Zealand bowler has dismissed Kohli four times in the IPL in 40 balls while giving away only 39 runs.Stats that matter You can expect fireworks one way or the other if Rohit faces Umesh Yadav on Monday. He has scored 143 runs off 94 balls off Umesh, but has also been dismissed four times by the fast bowler, including the dismissal in their first clash this season over two weeks ago. De kock’s form against Royal Challengers will give him further confidence after his 81 against Royals. He has scored 266 runs against them at a strike rate of 158.30 and average of 53.20, with two half-centuries and a century. Bumrah’s record against Royal Challengers will bother the visitors too, especially if Kohli and de Villiers aren’t batting in the death overs. He has 16 wickets in 12 innings against them with an economy rate of 7.80. Kohli has a phenomenal average of 86.50 against Mumbai, with 519 runs from 11 innings, and strike rate of 53.60. Rohit is 40 away from 8000 runs overall in T20s. Hardik is four wickets away from an overall tally off 100 in T20s.

Arsenal can sign the perfect competition for Saka in £60m "wizard"

Arsenal have been enjoying a relatively successful season so far this year; not only did they comfortably top their Champions League group, but they also spent Christmas Day at the top of the Premier League table.

However, consecutive league losses following that saw them welcome in the new year down in fourth place, and while their defence and midfield have been thoroughly impressive this year, their attack has left a lot to be desired.

One of the shining lights at the club is Hale End graduate Bukayo Saka, and while he is one of the first names on the teamsheet, he could do with some genuine competition to prevent Mikel Arteta from overplaying him.

Arsenal can sign the perfect Partey replacement with £90m "one-man army"

The 22-year-old could anchor Arsenal’s midfield for a decade.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Jan 5, 2024

Luckily, the latest player linked with the Gunners could provide just that: Crystal Palace's Michael Olise.

Arsenal transfer news – Michael Olise

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal have maintained their interest in Palace's French attacker Olise, and in a positive development for the Gunners, the report has confirmed that the 22-year-old would prefer a move to the Emirates over one to Manchester United.

The London-born dynamo did sign a new deal with the Eagles during the summer, but the report has claimed that the new contract includes a release clause around the €70m – £60m – mark.

While that would represent a significant investment from the Gunners, they have already proven that they are now ready to spend what is required to sign the best players in the league, with Declan Rice costing them £105m.

Moreover, having a player that football writer Muhammad Butt dubbed a "wizard" to provide competition for Saka can only be a good thing for all involved.

Michael Olise could be the perfect competition for Bukayo Saka

Now, to expect anyone to come into the current Arsenal side and outright displace fan favourite Saka would be wholly unreasonable, but to be a successful transfer, Olise would just need to come in and provide genuine competition, which for a player of his quality should be no problem at all.

Described as "phenomenal" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the Palace star missed the start of this season through injury, but since his return, he has been on fire, scoring five goals and providing one assist in just seven Premier League starts – including a stunner against Luton Town.

To put that into context, Saka has scored six goals and provided six assists in 19 starts this season, which is both impressive and the perfect example of why the Gunners could do with another talented right-winger.

Things look even better for Olise when comparing the pairs' underlying numbers, as while the Arsenal ace still just about comes out on top, the dynamic Frenchman is practically neck and neck with him on most essential metrics.

In fact, he comes out ahead of his potential new teammate when it comes to non-penalty expected goals and assists, progressive passes, and shot-creating actions.

That said, when it comes to goal-creating actions, touches in the opposition penalty area, winning aerial duels and progressive carries, the ace in red and white emerges victorious.

Ultimately, with Arsenal now competing on multiple fronts, Arteta will need a reliable alternative to Saka either for competition's sake or simply rotation, and there really aren't many options better than Olise.

Wriddhiman Saha gets India A chance in bid to regain Test spot

Shaw, Agarwal, Gill and Vihari are also part of the shadow squad that will tour the West Indies shortly before the senior India team’s trip to the Caribbean

ESPNcricinfo staff14-May-2019Wriddhiman Saha will get a chance to stake his claim for a return to India’s Test team when he tours the Caribbean with the India A team after the World Cup. The tour, which includes five one-day matches (from July 11 to 21) and three four-day matches (from July 24 to August 9) will directly precede the senior India team’s tour of the West Indies, which is set to begin in early August.A spate of injuries has led to Saha not featuring for India since the first Test of their South Africa tour in January 2018. Emery could damage Duran’s Aston Villa career by sealing "unreal" transfer

Aston Villa were brought back down to earth following a drab 0-0 draw against Everton over the weekend as they slipped down to third in the Premier League table.

With just over a couple of weeks left in the January transfer window, Unai Emery will be keen on bringing at least another one or two fresh faces to Villa Park in order to bolster his squad.

There have been plenty of names linked with a move to the Midlands, yet it is a talented 18-year-old who could be the most exciting link.

Aston Villa want to sign Champions League sensation

According to Graeme Bailey (via Total Villa on X), Villa are showing interest in teenage FC Copenhagen starlet Roony Bardghji this month ahead of making a potential move.

According to reports, Villa have even sent scouts to monitor the youngster recently, and it is clear that his performances have impressed Emery enough to consider luring him to the Premier League.

FC Copenhagen midfielderRoony Bardghji.

He could cost the club around £20m if any move goes ahead and while on the surface this sounds like a lot, the fee could turn out to be a bargain in the next couple of years if he lives up to his potential.

Chelsea and Manchester United are also keen on signing Bardghji and this suggests that Emery must act swiftly to bring him to Villa Park.

How Roony Bardghji compares to Jhon Duran

Jhon Duran only signed for Villa last January from Chicago Fire in a deal worth £18m, and it looked as though he could be the heir apparent to Ollie Watkins.

It hasn’t quite worked out for the Colombian sensation at Villa, however, as he has played 35 times for the club and scored just four goals during that time period.

Out of these 35 matches, only seven have been starts and Emery has yet to unleash him in the starting XI in the Premier League.

The arrival of Bardghji could spell the beginning of the end of Duran’s Villa career, especially considering how impressive he has been this season.

In 30 matches for Copenhagen, the youngster has already found the back of the net on 11 occasions, including a famous strike against Man Utd in the Champions League to send the Danish side through to the last 16 at their expense.

While this goal certainly caught the eye of a few teams, his consistent performances in the Danish top flight have shown that he is remarkably mature for his age.

Indeed, across the whole Copenhagen team, Bardghji ranks second for goals and assists (seven), while ranking third for successful dribbles per game (one) and second for goal frequency (a goal every 134 minutes), which clearly indicates just how impressive he has been during 2023/24.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig perhaps foresaw how good he would be at such a tender age, describing the Swede as an “unreal talent” back in 2022 and there is seemingly no limit to just how good he can become.

Duran has not enjoyed the most productive of seasons, and he can count himself unlucky that Watkins has been in such good form.

If Bardghji does join Villa, however, it could mean even fewer opportunities for Duran on the pitch as there will be a new teenage starlet in town ready to steal the plaudits.

Agent Sergio Aguero making Mario Balotelli transfer dream come true! Ex-Argentina international puts in Boca Juniors call for former Man City team-mate & fellow Premier League title winner

Ex-Argentina international Aguero savoured Premier League title glory alongside Balotelli during their time together at Manchester City in 2012. They combined for the most memorable of goals on the final day of that campaign, as the English top-flight crown was snatched away from arch-rivals Manchester United.

Aguero has been reunited with Balotelli during a stream that saw City claim another Premier League title in 2024, with the record books being rewritten by Pep Guardiola’s side during an era of domestic dominance.

WHAT AGUERO SAID

During that broadcast, mercurial Italian frontman Balotelli told his former team-mate when discussing Argentine football: “I prefer Boca to River. My dream is to play in La Bombonera.” Aguero immediately got on the phone to Boca supremo Riquelme, saying in a voice note: “Hello, Romi. Well, I'm watching City vs West Ham with Mario Balotelli and I’m here to tell you that his dream is to play for Boca. So now the ball is in your court. In June he is a free agent.”

Arsenal eye surprise late move for Jurrien Timber 2.0

Arsenal have been one of the quietest clubs in the transfer window throughout January. There have been very few outgoings and absolutely no incomings at the Emirates Stadium.

However, with seven days left in the window now, there is still hope of a late move for supporters.

The striker the Gunners are crying out for seems unlikely to arrive before the summer but it looks as though Edu Gaspar and Co are still in the market for a new defender with Jurrien Timber out long-term and Oleksandr Zinchenko suffering his own fitness issues throughout the season.

So, who is that man? We've got all the details.

The defender Arsenal could sign before the deadline

A priority for Arsenal this winter has been to strengthen their backline if the right market opportunity appeared.

One move has been touted for Turkish full-back Ferdi Kadioglu but in recent weeks that is a rumour that has gone rather quiet.

Since then, the north Londoners have now cast their eyes in the direction of Kyle Walker-Peters. That's according to a report from TEAMtalk on Wednesday.

They suggest that he is a name for 'fans to keep an eye on' in the last week of the window with a move now potentially in the pipeline.

Three midfielders Arsenal could sign to replace Kai Havertz in late move

Valued at just £7.5m as per Football Transfers' in-house valuation model, it could be a bargain move in a month where FFP issues have plagued various clubs in England.

How Kyle Walker-Peters compares to Jurrien Timber

Walker-Peters might not be a name that sets pulses racing at the Emirates Stadium but at this time of the year it's difficult to greatly improve your squad.

However, the signing of the Southampton full-back would boost numbers in an area where since Timber was cruelly ruled out with an ACL injury, they have lacked.

Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber

The biggest bonus, similar to the Dutch Arsenal defender, is that the former Tottenham man is capable of playing in a wide array of positions. He learnt his trade as a right-back but in the last few seasons has begun appearing at left-back in a more inverted role. That rather seems tailor-made for Mikel Arteta's system.

Timber arrived in the summer having starred for Ajax last season as a central defender but throughout pre-season and in the Community Shield, we saw him at right-back and left-back. Evidently, Walker-Peters could fulfil a similar role until the Netherlands defender returns from injury in a few months.

What also makes the Saints man an attractive signing is his ability to bring a degree of press resistance to the team he's playing in.

The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell noted this when the full-back was playing in the Premier League, saying of Walker-Peters' qualities: "He can act as a pressure valve, winning free-kicks and playing out of tight areas." Those are qualities Arteta loves, particularly from his wide defenders. Just ask Zinchenko, a player famed for his press resistance.

It's fair to say that the Englishman is rather underrated, but not to those on the south coast, with Ruben Selles previously saying: "I think Kyle is an extraordinary player. His ability in positions, but also to understand the system we are playing has big value for us. Kyle has been really good in the Premier League for the last four to five years."

That certainly bodes well if the Gunners are aiming for a short-term fix in the second half of the campaign, but how do the pair compare statistically?

The answer is pretty well. As we can see, they are very alike when it comes to the number of attacking and defensive actions they perform, notably defensive. However, there's also that layer of being able to progress the ball, achieving an impressive pass success percentage and performing a high degree of progressive passes.

Walker-Peters, who stands at a diminutive 5 foot 8, might not be the name that Arsenal fans have craved this January but he'd certainly be a smart signing until the club can go big again in the summer.
