Approach made: Brighton have asked about deal to sign “gifted” £21m player

Brighton and Hove Albion have made contact to enquire about a deal to sign a new defender, according to a fresh report that has emerged.

Roberto De Zerbi's season so far

The Seagulls have made a generally positive start to the new campaign having won six, drawn four and lost four of their opening 14 games, meaning that they currently find themselves eighth in the Premier League table.

Ahead of January, Roberto De Zerbi will know that strengthening his squad further could allow him to challenge for a high place in the division, not to mention how far he could take his side in the Europa League, and he’s set his sights on one target in particular.

Sevilla right-back Juanlu Sanchez has established himself as Diego Alonso’s overall second best-performing player so far this season with a match rating of 7.03 (WhoScored – Sevilla statistics), and the 20-year-old’s impressive form has seemingly caught the eye at The Amex.

The Spain youth international was recently the subject of interest from the south coast outfit who were reportedly considering making a move, and if the following update is to be believed, the hierarchy have now taken their admiration one step further prior to the upcoming transfer window opening.

Brighton interested in Juanlu Sanchez

According to Spanish outlet ABC Sevilla (via Sport Witness), Brighton are keen on Sanchez ahead of January. The Seagulls have reached out to ask how much it would take to secure the services of their target “in recent days”, after sending scouts to assess his performances. The Sevilla defender is set to have a release clause of €25m (£21m) in the new year, and whilst an official offer is yet to be made, there is “clear interest”.

Sevilla defenderJuanlu Sanchez.

Sanchez could be a "gifted" player for De Zerbi

Being a right-back, Sanchez is naturally stronger in the defensive aspect of his game which he’s proven so far this season where he currently ranks in the 99th percentile for tackles and the 98th percentile for blocks (FBRef – Sanchez statistics).

Sponsored by Nike, De Zerbi’s target is also capable of making a positive impact in the final third having posted 23 contributions, 13 assists and 10 goals, in 128 appearances since the start of his career (Transfermarkt – Sanchez statistics).

The Seville native also has previous experience competing in both the Champions League and Europa League, so he will additionally know what it takes to be successful at the level required in the competition that the club are currently in.

As described by Jose Manuel Rodriguez, Sanchez is a genuinely “gifted” player, and whilst he could be ready to be thrown straight into the starting line-up, being just 20 years of age, he could be more of an exciting signing for the long-term future of Brighton.

CWI asked to 'rescind' Pybus appointment

The Leewards Islands Cricket Board has cited “grave concerns” over the process followed by the CWI president Dave Cameron to appoint West Indies’ new head coach

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Jan-2019Cricket West Indies (CWI) has been asked to “rescind” the appointment of Richard Pybus as national coach, with the Leewards Islands Cricket Board (LICB) saying he was “handpicked” by Dave Cameron, the CWI president, through an “unacceptable” process.”It is unfortunate, unacceptable and unethical for the CWI President to single-handedly recruit a person of his choosing, and to proceed with salary negotiations without the prior knowledge of the Board,” the LICB email, signed by its directors Enoch Lewis and Denrick Liburd, and accessed by ESPNcricinfo, said. The LICB asked for a response from CWI by the end of Tuesday. ESPNcricinfo understands CWI did not meet that deadline, but a response will be sent next week.Pybus was announced as interim head coach of West Indies last week. His tenure is set to start with the home series against England from January 23 and end soon after the home series against India, in September 2019. Pybus takes over from Stuart Law, who opted out of his contract prematurely last year.According to the LICB, one of many members that make up CWI, Cameron announced Law’s resignation at a board meeting on September 22 and said he would leave by the end of 2018. Jimmy Adams, the director of cricket, was then asked to present a list of potential candidates from within the Caribbean who could perform the role of interim head coach while a process to appoint a long-term coach was put in place. The LICB said Adams submitted *11 names including Nic Pothas, who was appointed stand-in coach for the Bangladesh tour in November 2018. The others were Roddy Estwick, Floyd Reifer, Gus Logie, Desmond Haynes, Toby Radford, Andre Coley, Esuan Crandon, Stuart Williams, Rayon Griffith and Robert Samuels.Nic Pothas plays football with Jason Holder•AFPAdams shortlisted Pothas based on recommendations from Law and Jason Holder, West Indies’ Test and ODI captain, who wanted “continuity” and stability in the coaching staff. The CWI board agreed, putting Pothas in charge while also advertising for long-term candidates. Adams, the LICB pointed out, had already penned a five-step process to hire the new head coach.According to the LICB, Adams also recommended that Pothas work alongside Law in Bangladesh to get acquainted with the increased workflow. However, on September 26, the 17 directors that comprise the CWI board were told that Law was resigning at the end of the India tour and wouldn’t be going to Bangladesh. As a result, Pothas, who was due to take charge only in January 2019, and work through till September, was pressed into the job two months in advance. Also, CWI was yet to finalise a compensation package for Pothas. On November 28, Cameron told the CWI board in an emergency teleconference that Adams had left for Bangladesh to conduct negotiations. Eventually, a one-time offer of USD 12,500 per month was made to Pothas, who “countered” by asking for USD 22,000 (the amount CWI paid Law for his services).According to the LICB, CWI had “blundered” by not entering into “good faith negotiations” with Pothas before he took over as interim head coach. “The president, Dave Cameron, reported that he received an email from Mr. Pothas in which the interim Head Coach sought to justify why the job was worth more than the CWI’s offer of $12,500, and made the determination that the matter was at a stalemate. Discussion with Mr. Pothas was then terminated.”Cameron then told the CWI directors that he got in touch with Pybus and “concluded a deal, including a salary of USD 16,000 plus other unspecified benefits to become the next interim head coach.”Richard Pybus during his spell with Bangladesh•AFPThe LICB cited “grave concerns” that Cameron went to Pybus without seeking inputs from Adams, the cricket committee, the technical cricket committee or the CWI board. It also pointed out that the salary given to Pybus was “significantly” higher than Pothas’.At the quarterly CWI board meeting, when Pybus’ appointment came up for ratification, the LICB directors objected strongly. They said Pybus had not “formally expressed an interest”, had “limited” experience considering he hadn’t coached an international team in five years, and had not been part of Adams’ shortlist of candidates. While noting that Cameron’s decision received “majority” support from the 17 CWI board directors, the LICB called the issue “divisive.””While the recommendation piloted by the President to hand-pick Mr. Pybus eventually received majority support at the meeting, the records would show that the handling of this matter provoked heated debate and proved a very divisive issue amongst the Directors. This is evidenced by the equal split of votes amongst Directors from the shareholder territories. This is a clear indication that there are concerns.”As a way forward, the LICB suggested negotiating a new compensation package with Pothas, who it said should continue as the interim head coach until September 2019. It also made the “demand” that “the recent decision to hand-pick Richard Pybus as interim Head Coach be rescinded.”*GMT 0645 The article earlier mentioned, erroneously, that Adams had submitted 13 names.

'Next time they're all out!' – Mauricio Pochettino fumes after Cole Palmer's extraordinary clash with Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson over Chelsea penalty against Everton as he confirms who is permanent taker

A fuming Mauricio Pochettino sent out a stern warning to Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke after they clashed with Cole Palmer over a Chelsea penalty.

Madueke & Jackson wanted to snatch penalty from PalmerThe English forward stuck to his gunsPochettino was furious with the on-pitch penalty rowWHAT HAPPENED?

The match against Everton turned out to be a night of glory for Cole Palmer as he secured a perfect hat-trick within a remarkable 16-minute spell. Adding to his impressive performance, Palmer later converted a penalty to score his fourth goal of the match as Chelsea eventually ran out 6-0 winners. However, the spotlight shifted momentarily from Palmer's heroics to a heated dispute between him, Jackson and Madueke over the penalty-taking duties.

The incident unfolded as both Madueke and Jackson rushed to claim the ball from Malo Gusto, sparking a tense 30-second exchange between the two players. Thiago Silva intervened, managing to defuse the situation momentarily as Jackson walked away. However, the conflict escalated when Madueke remained adamant he was going to take the penalty, before captain Conor Gallagher urged the forward to hand over the ball to Palmer. Despite Gallagher's instructions, Madueke refused, prompting Gallagher to take matters into his own hands by forcibly retrieving the ball and handing it to Palmer.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Pochettino said: "I can't accept this kind of behaviour. I told them it's the last time I want to see this kind of behaviour. It is impossible to have this type of behaviour after this performance. If we want to be a great team, we need to change and think in a collective way. They’re all involved in this situation. Next time they’re all out. This is not a joke."

POCHETTINO ON CHELSEA'S DESIGNATED PENALTY TAKER

Pochettino reiterated that Palmer is the designated penalty taker for the team and stressed the need for clarity and adherence to established roles within the squad.

"The penalty taker is Palmer. It's Palmer who needs to decide if he wants to give the ball to a team-mate. It's important to fix. They realise now," the Argentine said.

"It's a shame. It's a process for a young team who needs to learn a lot. I want to apologise to the fans. We need to be focused on the collective. It's like we are in a school, and our job is to show them they were wrong so they can learn. There will be no punishment, but this can't happen again. If Palmer is on the pitch, he is the penalty taker."

With a flawless record of converting all nine penalties he has taken in the Premier League, Palmer's proficiency from the spot is unquestionable. This remarkable feat puts him on the coattails of legendary former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, who boasts a 100 percent conversion rate from 11 penalties in the competition's history.

West Ham scouting exciting defender and Steidten is personally a big fan

West Ham United are in the market for additions in the mid-season window and could now move for a talented star after being impressed with his performances during a scouting mission.

West Ham United see off Burnley…

Last weekend, West Ham United produced a late show at Turf Moor to overcome Burnley, with an own goal from Dara O'Shea and a last-minute strike from Tomas Soucek giving David Moyes' men three points in Lancashire. Despite looking down and out against Vincent Kompany's men, the Irons rallied and secured a victory to place them ninth in the Premier League standings, with 20 points taken from their 13 fixtures played so far in the English top flight.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Scottish boss Moyes praised his players' resilience on the day to grind out a result at a difficult away venue, stating via the official club website: "It didn’t look like we were going to get one. We had about three or four corners and the ball was not going in, then we had a couple that were headed out and we shot wide or had it blocked, and I thought it looked like we weren’t going to get it."

He added: "But we’re resilient and we stick at it and the players don’t give in. They’ve got great commitment, all of them, so there was always a chance we were going to do that and thankfully we did it today."

Europa League duty now beckons for West Ham United, who will travel to Serbian outfit Backa Topola on Thursday, knowing that they stand on the brink of securing progression to the knockout rounds of the competition.

Looking ahead to January, Moyes looks to have identified a new target who could help to address a key position at the London Stadium with the help of his scouting team.

West Ham United eye Zaidu Sanusi

According to TEAMtalk, Porto full-back Zaidu Sanusi has been scouted by West Ham United and has emerged as a target for the Irons as they look to add quality on the left-hand side of defence.

Technical director Tim Steidten is personally a huge fan of the player and the east Londoners have sent a delegation to watch the 26-year-old in his last two matches. Former England international Aaron Cresswell is believed to be in the firing line should a new left-back arrive in January, and could be let go mid-season as he continues to be out-of-favour under Moyes.

This term, Sanusi has made six appearances in all competitions for Portuguese giants Porto, registering one goal in the process (Sanusi statistics – Transfermarkt). Now in the sights of the Irons, Sanusi could help to offer some added athleticism and quality in the left-back berth; however, we will need to wait and see on that front.

Returning Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez key against resurgent South Africa

Pakistan have never lost at St George’s Park in three matches, but they’ll have to be wary of David Miller, who returns to his favourite ground in South Africa

The Preview by Liam Brickhill18-Jan-2019Big PictureAfter South Africa’s domination of the Test series, a switch to the white ball should bring these two teams closer. The pitches will be flatter, the bouncers fewer, and a home side preoccupied with finding the combinations they will use at the World Cup is unlikely to have things all their way. That’s not to say that Pakistan did not have their moments during the Tests, and there were times when the visitors bossed sessions or passages of play. Such sparks weren’t enough to swing entire Test matches, but similar performances, in a format in which Pakistan are probably a little more comfortable currently, could be enough to upset the hosts. While Pakistan are banking on the return of a couple of very experienced old heads in Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez (as well as the added potency of players such as Fakhar Zaman in this format), South Africa have gone in the other direction, including the uncapped pair of Rassie van der Dussen and Duanne Olivier in their squad. Hafeez’s relief at the absence of the name ‘Dale Steyn’ in the squad for the first two ODIs may be tempered somewhat by a glance at Olivier’s stats during the Tests, but South Africa’s current predilection for tinkering could also expose them.Pakistan and South Africa have traded blows in their last two one-day series on these shores, with South Africa winning 3-2 in 2012-13 and Pakistan triumphing 2-1 the following season. Indeed, Pakistan sealed that last series with a one-run win in Port Elizabeth, though Hafeez is the only member of the current squad to have played a part in that victory.Pakistan were perhaps lacking in self belief during their Asia Cup campaign, and sharing the spoils with New Zealand may have provided little succour. After the battering they received in the Tests, a little bit of belief in their white-ball skills could go a long way. Confidence won’t be a problem for South Africa after they showed that they could beat Australia in Australia late last year even with some of their big names missing, and the hosts start as clear favourites.ALSO READ: The rise of the Bloemfontein Bone CollectorForm guideSouth AfricaWLWWW (completed matches, most recentfirst)

St George’s Park is a ground that already holds special memories for van der Dussen: it was here that he made his T20 debut for North West back in 2013.ALSO READ: All-format specialist van der Dussen ready for the step upThe last man standing from the 1990s, Shoaib Malik is experience personified. Fourteen of his 274 ODIs have been played in South Africa, and he has an excellent record with the bat here, averaging 48.88 with a century and a fifty to his name. Pakistan will look to Malik for the middle-order ballast that was lacking from their efforts in the Test series.Team newsSouth Africa coach Ottis Gibson reckons that one of van der Dussen’s strengths is that he can slot into virtually any position in the top six, and there is likely to be an experimental look to the hosts’ playing XI, making a starting line-up hard to predict. South Africa have two wristspinners in their squad, in Imran Tahir and Tabraiz Shamsi, though conditions will probably dictate that they only play one.South Africa: 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Aiden Markram, 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Faf du Plessis (capt), 5 Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 6 David Miller, 7 Dwaine Pretorius, 8 Andile Phehlukwayo, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Duanne Olivier, 11 Imran TahirShan Masood’s form in the Test series means he could be in line for an ODI debut, although that could complicate things for Pakistan at the top of the order. The visitors should be buoyed by the experience in the middle-order engine room, while the bowling attack’s key ingredient is variety.Pakistan: 1 Shan Masood, 2 Fakhar Zaman, 3 Babar Azam, 4 Mohammad Hafeez, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Sarfraz Ahmed (capt, wk), 7 Shadab Khan, 8 Imad Wasim, 9 Faheem Ashraf, 10 Hasan Ali, 11 Shaheen Shah AfridiALSO READ: Steyn, de Kock rested for ODIs against PakistanPitch and conditionsThe St George’s Park strip has a reputation for being kind to batsmen, and the outfield for being quick, so there should be runs to be had. That being said, there have been occasions where this track has played a little slower and lower than a stroke-maker would like, and spin can be a factor at the back-end of a match. There could be a little rain around in the morning before the game, but the afternoon should be mostly sunny and the evening mild.Stats and triviaPakistan have never lost against South Africa at St George’s Park, winning two of the three ODIs at this ground, with one game rained off.Pakistan hold the record for the highest total scored at this ground: their 335 for 6 back in 2002. David Miller usually finds conditions at St. George’s Park to his liking. He averages 113.50 from four innings at this ground, with a fifty and an unbeaten hundred to his name, and strikes at 94.97 here.Quotes”This field is one of the best in the country. The outfield and the wicket always have a nice paceto them. It is a ground that has good memories for me, I made my T20 debut here a few years ago. I am quite excited.”

Klopp could unleash TAA in different role by starting 8/10 gem vs Man Utd

Liverpool have already saved themselves the stress of playing an extra two European games in the new year by finishing top of their Europa League group. Tonight’s clash away at Union Saint-Gilloise is meaningless for the Reds as they are already guaranteed to finish top of Group E, having won four matches from the first five.

Jurgen Klopp's main focus will be Sunday's huge Northwest Derby fixture against bitter rivals Manchester United in the Premier League and the German coach will already be planning his tactics and starting lineup ahead of that historic match – having left a number of his first-team stars at home for the trip to Belgium.

One player in particular could be the focus of the German’s strategic endeavouring, ahead of the visit of the Red Devils.

Wataru Endo’s stats this season

Wataru Endo joined Liverpool from VfB Stuttgart in the summer for £16m and could be seen as somewhat of a temporary replacement for Fabinho who left for £40m in the same transfer window.

Nevertheless, the Japan international has had some decent performances for the Reds but is statistically nowhere near the levels Fabinho was reaching last season.

Endo started on Saturday against Crystal Palace as Liverpool came back from behind to win 2-1 in dramatic fashion after a Harvey Elliott winner in stoppage time, but following a dull first-half display, the 30-year-old was replaced by Joe Gomez as Klopp rejigged the midfield setup.

The summer signing hadn’t started in the Premier League for Liverpool since before the November international break but was rewarded for an “eye-catching cameo” against Fulham by starting consecutive league matches versus Sheffield United and Palace.

Unfortunately, Endo struggled to impose his will on the game at Selhurst Park and was dispossessed twice, committed three fouls and failed to play more than four passes into the final third before being hooked at the interval.

The reasons why Trent Alexander-Arnold should start in midfield

At the back end of last season after what was a dismal campaign for the Reds, Klopp decided to change his approach in games by making the most of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s passing range by handing the academy product an inverted fullback role.

ryan-kent-trent-alexander-arnold-liverpool-opinion

The 25-year-old typically pushes inside from the right-back spot alongside Liverpool’s deepest midfielder, while the left-back tucks in as a third centre-half, creating a 3-2-5 shape in possession.

However, in the second half against Palace, Klopp tried something a little different. Endo was subbed out for Gomez, who moved over to the right of the defence and put in a shift, earning an 8/10 match rating from This Is Anfield – who cited the versatile defender as a catalyst behind Liverpool’s comeback.

More importantly, though, the manager moved Alexander-Arnold out of the backline and positioned him as a defensive midfield player as opposed to an inverted fullback who comes inside.

The fullback-cum-pivot player was excellent for Liverpool at the weekend and created more chances than any other star on the pitch despite not claiming an assist for either of the two goals.

Alexander-Arnold has only ever started a game in the middle of the park for Liverpool once, which came in a goalless draw at Anfield back in April 2018 against Stoke City – as per Transfermarkt.

Klopp could potentially rehash his successful tactical tweak from Saturday’s game by doing so again against Erik ten Hag's beleaguered side, bringing Gomez in as the right-sided fullback and dropping Endo from the lineup completely.

The Hundred 'needs to be a success', says PCA chairman

Daryl Mitchell reiterates call for new teams to have independent coaching set-ups rather than be run by host counties

Alan Gardner26-Feb-2019Daryl Mitchell, the chairman of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA), has warned that The Hundred, the ECB’s new format slated for introduction next year, needs to be a success or risk having “serious damaging effects for the counties”.Mitchell and David Leatherdale, the PCA chief executive, have also questioned suggestions in recent weeks that the eight new teams – to be based at Lord’s, The Oval, Southampton, Cardiff, Edgbaston, Trent Bridge, Old Trafford and Headingley – could be overseen by coaching staff from their respective host county. “I think as soon as you start controlling two budgets there will be a massive conflict of interest,” Mitchell said.Speaking on the day of the PCA’s AGM at The Oval, where Mitchell was re-elected for a second two-year term as chairman, he described it as “imperative” that everyone in the English game gets behind the new competition, which is “front and centre of everyone’s mind now”. The ECB last week announced near-unanimous agreement from the counties on the playing conditions, and the focus will now turn to settling on the eight team identities, as well as details for the player draft, scheduled to be held in October. However, while it was initially envisaged that squads for The Hundred would be looked after by completely independent coaching structures, it was reported earlier this month that the counties had defeated the ECB on this point. Instead, it could mean that the team based at Lord’s, for example, are in turn managed by Middlesex’s director of cricket, currently Stuart Law, with the potential for significant overlap between county and The Hundred coaching and playing structures. As the head of the players’ union, Mitchell’s first concern is ensuring that all PCA members have a fair chance of winning selection in the draft – rather than county coaches picking their own. But he also suggested that smaller counties agreeing to let the host grounds take control would be equivalent to “signing your own death warrant” due to lost revenue from the ECB’s central pot.”From our point of view, initially it was sold as something completely different and new,” Mitchell said. “If you have a director of cricket in charge of both lists, both sets of players at the same home ground, I think that is inherently not different. I also think as soon as you start controlling two budgets there will be a massive conflict of interest and there will be severe issues.”I’m amazed that the non-host venues that are paired up with these counties would even contemplate letting it happen, to be perfectly honest. I think it’s sort of signing your own death warrant, or making life extra difficult for yourself.”It’s something the PCA and the ECB initially were completely aligned on, I’ve sat on two cricket committee meetings where it’s been passed that it has to be independent, that’s paramount to the integrity of the competition. I sat on the working group, and it was pretty much unanimous there as well, that it needed to be independent people in charge of selecting these teams.”From the players’ point of view, it’s imperative that you have the best 96 players. What you don’t want is to have bias, or even the perception of bias, from people picking their own men, shall we say. This competition, to be a success, needs to have the best 96 players and everyone should have a fair and equal opportunity of being in that, by performances in the T20 Blast or the previous two-three years.”

The Hundred needs to be a success because the ramifications if it fails over the next four or five years could be quite seriousPCA chairman Daryl Mitchell

Each of the counties is already guaranteed an extra £1.3m, after agreeing to the ECB’s plans for its new tournament. But with further money set to be allocated depending on the players and staff involved, Mitchell suggested it could lead to a situation where the rich get richer. There are also potential issues with the constitution of the boards to manage each team in The Hundred. While some have multiple representatives – Middlesex, Essex and the MCC will jointly take charge of the Lord’s outfit – the Manchester team currently only has involvement from Lancashire.”The big ground has his director of cricket, I’m sure there’d be a nice little claw-back on his salary,” Mitchell said. “He might employ a coach, he might employ eight or nine of his players, all the percentage of their salaries is going to go back to the big county to spend again, on top of the staging fee that they get. So from a financial point of view, all the big host venues are winning and all the non-host venues are losing severely, I would suggest.”On the possibility of conflicts of interest when managing two supposedly separate squads, Leatherdale referred to the concept of “bundling”, allegedly practised by Perth Scorchers in Australia’s Big Bash League, whereby players could be encouraged to switch counties based on the potential for greater opportunities in The Hundred.”It’s all perception,” Leatherdale said. “You’re trying to create a competition that’s got clear integrity about what you’re trying to do to make it different, and all of a sudden you might have something that … gives the opportunity for someone to say ‘That doesn’t look right’. You’ve got the Andrew Tye situation that happened in Western Australia. He was picked up by Perth Scorchers, didn’t play four-day cricket but had a contract managed by the same people.”That would be the key bit that Daryl said, you want everybody to have the best opportunity to be selected, the best 96, but also that person that’s done very, very well, as opposed to a coach who feels he can pick four or five people that he knows… It’s not a question of integrity, it’s just perception.”In response to Mitchell’s criticisms, an ECB spokesman said: “We have worked closely with the whole game to create a big opportunity for the whole game. The Hundred has already helped cricket in England and Wales to secure powerful partnerships with Sky and BBC, get live cricket on terrestrial TV and attract fresh revenues that will benefit cricket at all levels.”Players are core – it has been important to have the PCA involved, players’ feedback from the pilot days was invaluable and we welcome their ongoing insights. Within the game’s formal governance process, support for the new competition and playing conditions has been overwhelmingly positive and we look forward to developing the competition even further over the next few months.”Tom Harrison, the ECB’s chief executive, has previously described the The Hundred as crucial to the future of the game in England. And while Mitchell, who was encouraged by his involvement in September’s trial events, admitted that “there’s still some to be convinced” among the PCA membership, he said it was now important to get behind the new format.”These decisions have been made. It’s imperative that everyone gets behind it, it needs to be a success – probably for all stakeholders. My concern is the players but from a broadcast point of view, from a supporter’s point of view, it needs to be a success because I think the ramifications if it fails over the next four or five years could be quite serious and have serious damaging effects to the counties.”

Man Utd dud who lost the ball 15x really let Ten Hag down today

After an important 0-0 draw at Anfield last weekend, Manchester United had the opportunity to kickstart their season today against West Ham. However, Erik ten Hag's side suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of their former boss, David Moyes.

The first half saw very little goalmouth action, and it seemed as though the game would conclude at 0-0 after 90 minutes of dull football until Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring in the 72nd minute after latching onto a lovely outside-of-the-foot dink from Lucas Paqueta.

The Brazilian then registered his fifth assist in two Premier League games six minutes later, as ex-Ajax star Mohammed Kudus slotted home with his right foot. That goal sealed United’s position in eighth and their eighth loss in 18 top-flight matches this term.

Man Utd’s stats vs West Ham

Andre Onana had a relatively quiet first 45 minutes as his side dominated the ball, tallying up 62% of possession. In truth, the first half had very little quality on display, which made the game quite scrappy at times. Ten Hag’s side had six attempts at goal and accumulated 0.61 xG, according to Sofascore.

Both sides showed very little in the final third, but the Red Devils looked the most likely to open the scoring. Antony was United’s most creative outlet, and he often drifted inside to pick up the ball and force combinations. The Brazilian created the best chance of the half, playing Alejandro Garnacho through on goal, but the Argentine was unable to sort his feet out and unleashed a weak strike straight at the 'keeper. The No 21 also fired a low cross with his right foot that Rasmus Hojlund should have been on the end of.

The Hammers sat in a low block and attempted to catch United out on the break throughout, and in the second half, they only had 31% possession. The game was fairly balanced, and it was a copy of the first half, with the visitors passing the ball around with little urgency. Yet, what will concern United fans the most is their team's reaction to going behind. They registered three shots after suffering the second and only registered 0.3 xG after the break. In short, United looked lost in the final third.

Alejandro Garnacho’s game in numbers

Ever since Marcus Rashford’s form took a hit, Garnacho has been Ten Hag’s first choice at left wing. However, today’s showing was one to forget for the youngster and the rest of his teammates.

Garnacho

Despite constantly showing enthusiasm, the 19-year-old struggled to overcome the physicality of Vladimir Coufal and Konstantinos Mavropanos. The Argentine won just three of his 12 duels all game, which is expected due to his lightweight build and age. However, he was also wasteful in key areas, giving away possession 15 times.

Furthermore, his big moment in the game unfortunately ended in frustration, as he squandered a golden opportunity to put United 1-0 up in the first half, which may have changed the following events. The table below sums up Garnacho’s performance:

xG

0.55

Shots

4

Dribble attempts (succ.)

4 (0)

Crosses (acc.)

3 (0)

Dribbled past

3

Overall, it is difficult to point the finger at individuals after such an embarrassing team showing, but Garnacho will only learn and improve from his performance as he is such a talented prospect.
