Pundit View: Prutton’s view on why Leeds should sign Kent is ridiculous

[ad_pod ]

David Prutton’s most recent article in the Yorkshire Post sees him give an absolutely ridiculous reason as to why Leeds should sign Ryan Kent on loan from Liverpool next season.

What’s been said then?

The former midfielder wrote that Kent should be signed due to the performances his Liverpool teammate Harry Wilson put in for Derby last season.

“I don’t know too much about the kid Kent but you only have to look at the other Liverpool loanee in the Championship last season in Harry Wilson who did wonderfully well at Derby,” Prutton wrote.

“I’m not saying it’s an exact science but Kent will have worked under Jurgen Klopp, under Lee Johnson on loan at Bristol City and most recently under Steven Gerrard at Rangers and that’s three very good coaches.

“Kent is surely a player that would benefit from being under Bielsa and if he’s anything like Wilson then he would be a great addition.”

Makes no sense

Prutton does say that it isn’t an exact science, but that isn’t enough to justify such a mind-boggling opinion.

This argument that Kent should be signed because Wilson did well is so easily unravelled it’s laughable.

It would be a partially decent point if Liverpool had an excellent track record with their loanees in the Championship, but they don’t.

Ben Woodburn and Ovie Ejaria spent parts of last season in the second tier and made next to no impact, while previous seasons have seen Sheyi Ojo and even Kent himself flop in this division.

Wilson is very much the exception to the rule here, and his performances at Hull before he joined Derby indicated that he would be brilliant in this division. Indeed, the winger has had a good season at Rangers, but his previous stints in the Championship have been less than impressive.

Arsenal fans react as Torreira reportedly asks to leave

[ad_pod ]

Despite the season ending in disappointing fashion, the Gunners’ work in the summer transfer window last year was by and large a success, and there was no bigger success story than Lucas Torreira.

Unai Emery’s side signed the midfielder from Sampdoria for £26m and the little Uruguayan proved to be everything that the Gunners thought they were getting: tenacious, spirited and a love for a tackle.

However, reports in recent weeks have suggested that Torreira could be set for a move away from the Emirates after just one season and he added fuel to the fire by admitting that he had found it difficult to a new culture and lifestyle in England.

Now, in an update from journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Torreira has apparently told his agents to try and sort a move away from the Emirates this summer with Milan being touted as a possible destination.

The report saw Arsenal fans take to Twitter to express their opinions on the matter and many seemed to be devastated by the news that the side’s new cult hero could already be on his way out.

Some however were far more ruthless on Torreira’s potential departure and declared that the Gunners should let him go and insisted “nobody is bigger than the club”.

Newcastle fans react to links to Sean Dyche

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Newcastle fans have been weighing in on some of the various names linked with their vacant managerial post, and the mention of Burnley’s Sean Dyche has drawn quite the reaction.

By this time next week, Newcastle will officially be manager-less. The Magpies confirmed earlier this week that Rafael Benitez will not return when his contract ends on July 1, much to the dismay of the Toon Army.

And while some fans are talking about boycotts and protests in the wake of Benitez’s imminent departure, others are already discussing the Spaniard’s replacement.

One linked name is Dyche, who the Daily Mail claim Newcastle would have to splash out a huge £10m compensation fee to land.

Can Newcastle make the top 6 next season? The Magpie Channel name the one player who could make that happen in the video below…

The 47 year-old has guided Burnley from the Championship to security in the top tier since he joined in 2012, and has formed a likable reputation as the old school rough and tumble style of manager.

Of course, the mere mention of a £10m fee is likely enough to turn Mike Ashley off the idea, and the Twitter reactions down below are full of sarcasm directed at the infamous owner…

Leeds target Ivan Sunjic could be a solid Kalvin Phillips replacement

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to reports in The Daily Mail, Leeds United have launched a bid to sign 22-year-old midfielder Ivan Sunjic.

The youngster could easily slot into the Leeds side in place of Kalvin Phillips as speculation hots up about a potential move to Aston Villa.

What’s the story?

The Whites face some competition from Birmingham City for the Croatian’s signature.

The article states that Sunjic has been looked at closely by the Yorkshire club due to the fact they don’t know if they will still have Phillips next season.

If the 23-year-old does indeed go to Villa Park, then there is no reason why the Dinamo Zagreb man can’t step up and take his place.

Phillips replacement

The Croatia U21 captain looks to have the pedigree needed to make an impact in the Championship.

The youngster is a Europa League regular, having appeared eight times in the competition last term.

Another indicator of the talent he possesses is the fact that he is a full international for Croatia, having made his debut in 2017.

The World Cup finalists have one of the strongest midfields in the world, and despite Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and Mateo Kovacic all standing between Sunjic and a spot in the national team, he has been a part of their plans, appearing once in 2017.

On top of this, he may yet improve under the tutelage of Marcelo Bielsa. We’ve seen what the Argentine can do for a young midfielder in Phillips as he improved leaps and bounds last term, in turn, earning himself a place in the Championship Team of the Year.

Aged just 22, Sunjic could be the perfect prototype for the 61-year-old to work his magic on again, and he could turn out to be a more than adequate replacement for one of Leeds’ key men should he leave this summer.

Liverpool fans react to update on Nicolas Pepe

[ad_pod ]

One of the most in-demand transfer targets this summer, Lille’s hot-shot forward Nicolas Pepe has been linked with some of the best sides in European football after a stunning campaign in which he scored 23 times.

Reports in recent weeks and months had suggested the frontrunners for the Ivorian’s signature included the likes of Liverpool and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

Now, according to a tweet from The Daily Mail’s Dominic King, Liverpool reportedly have “absolutely no interest” in signing Pepe and a deal for the winger will not be happening.

After hearing the latest news on Pepe, Reds fans took to Twitter to voice their opinion on the matter and many were seemingly divided over the situation.

Some supporters of the Merseyside club seemed rather pessimistic about the club’s chances of making a significant signing this summer and wondered whether they would be heading into the next campaign with little movement in the transfer market.

Others however felt that Pepe is just not good enough for the club and insisted youngsters like Rhian Brewster and Harry Wilson would get more of a chance in the first-team without the 24-year-old being involved.

Assessing Manchester United’s midfield targets: Mario Lemina vs Sean Longstaff

[ad_pod ]

When Jose Mourinho brought Paul Pogba back to Manchester United in the summer of 2016, the Portuguese manager envisioned that the player could become the heart of the club for the next decade.

Nearly three years later and the controversial number 6 is being linked with a move away, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with the task of re-configuring a midfield that only seems to tick when the enigmatic World Cup winner is properly in the mood.

The need for upgrades and fresh blood in the middle of the park is apparent, with Ander Herrera having walked out the exit door, and the Red Devils have been linked with a plethora of names in recent weeks, two of which are Mario Lemina and Sean Longstaff.

The duo, plying their trades at Southampton and Newcastle respectively, enjoyed mixed seasons in 2018/19, with academy product Longstaff enjoying a hype-stirring opening to life at senior level until injury curtailed his progress, while former Juventus man Lemina battled with injury and Ralph Hasenhuttl, who has left him out of the Saints’ pre-season training camp in Austria.

United’s recent midfield signings have been less than impressive, with Fred in particular flopping since trading Ukraine for England last summer, and it’s important that Solskjaer gets the right man if he is to soften the blow dealt by Pogba’s potential exit.

At 21-years-old, Englishman Longstaff surely finds himself on the radar of the big boys by virtue of his homegrown status, although that is not to downplay the quality he showcased in his nine Premier League appearances in black and white.

Longstaff’s impressive displays in February saw him nominated for the Premier League player of the month award alongside Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and United’s own Pogba.

Lemina featured more frequently, making 21 appearances, but an abdominal strain sustained right at the end of 2018 saw him sidelined until mid-April.

Relations between the midfielder and Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl seem to have taken a knock too, with the Gabonese international expressing his desire to quit before his exile from the squad.

Despite concerns over Lemina’s attitude and commitment, the stats suggest that he could be a far shrewder addition than Longstaff.

The Chronicle report that United will have to ‘smash’ the £35m paid to Newcastle by Liverpool for Andy Carroll’s services back in 2011 if they are to prise away their talented youngster, while TalkSport understand that Southampton value their want-away number 18 at just £15m.

Who is Man Utd’s worst ever player? Bebe? Eric Djemba-Djemba? The fan in the video below actually think it’s one of the Red Devils’ current crop…

Lemina outperforms Longstaff defensively, while the 15-cap international’s 1.1 dribbles per game and passing success rate of 86% also indicate that he uses the ball far better than the Newcastle prospect (stats via WhoScored).

Longstaff may have age on his side but United must avoid being taken for a ride by the player’s current employers.

Paying a fee near that which they shelled out for Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s services last month is a far greater gamble than that Lemina presents at just £15m.

Arsenal must place their trust in Eddie Nketiah next season

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Eddie. Eddie. Eddie. The now synonymous chants whenever Arsenal’s young striker Eddie Nketiah takes to the field. The 20-year-old burst onto the scene with a memorable late brace to spare the Gunners’ blushes against Norwich in the League Cup in October 2017, and became a real fan favourite by doing so.

However, the England U21 international has struggled to really break into the side since that day, but following some fine displays in pre-season, this could well be Nketiah’s year.

Reports earlier in January of this year had suggested that Nketiah could have been set for a loan move to the Bundesliga, but that fell through at the final moment. Unfortunately for the striker, that situation didn’t seem to translate into many opportunities in north London, and he was forced into the shadows as Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette stole the show up front.

But following Danny Welbeck’s departure on a free transfer at the end of last season, there is certainly greater room for Nketiah to stake a claim. Indeed, his showings in pre-season have certainly given Emery food for thought. The 20-year-old has netted three times in two games in the International Champions Cup, and more than held his own against Bayern Munich and Fiorentina.

A clinical penalty-box predator, Nketiah’s style of play gives Emery a different options to his current striking options. The Englishman is an out-and-out striker, who thrives on poaching goals. The likes of Aubameyang and Lacazette on the other hand have shown that they have different facets to their game. If the Gunners are in need of a goal or an extra body in the box to cause some havoc and chaos, Nketiah could very well be that man.

Indeed, as Emery hinted in his post-match press conference following the Fiorentina game, the chance for Nketiah to stay at the Emirates for the upcoming campaign is there for him to take.

The Spaniard said: “If you earn the right to be with us it’s because I can promise you that you are going to have minutes. We started this pre-season with the same idea as we finished last year – stay with us. And my idea is that if you progress like we are seeing from you, you can have a chance here for us.”

If Nketiah can continue to impress, then he may well have done enough to convince the Gunners hierarchy that he’s good enough to compete with the likes of Aubameyang and Lacazette. And that isn’t too shabby for a 20-year-old.

Wolves fans are delighted as Jesus Vallejo arrives from Real Madrid

[ad_pod ]

On Saturday, Wolverhampton Wanderers revealed that they had completed the signing of Real Madrid defender Jesus Vallejo on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old, who has become Wolves’ first signing of this summer’s transfer window, will spend the 2019-20 campaign with the Premier League club.

And it would be fair to say that the club’s fans are absolutely delighted to have secured a player of Vallejo’s ilk.

The centre-back started his professional career with Real Zaragoza before joining Real Madrid in July 2015, penning a six-year contract at the Bernabeu.

The former Spain Under-21 international has made 19 appearances for Los Blancos in all competitions, including seven during the 2018-19 season.

Vallejo has now earned a switch to the Premier League, though, and will be looking to help Wolves build on what was a very impressive campaign last term.

Aston Villa fans react as Said Benrahma speculation continues

[ad_pod ]

According to BirminghamLive, Brentford are holding out for a £25m transfer fee for Said Benrahma in the final stages of the summer transfer window.

The report claims that Villa are keen to do a deal somewhere between £15m and £20m. However, Brentford are said to be waiting on £25m.

Villa, who will open their 2019-20 Premier League campaign against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, have been incredibly active in this summer’s market.

Benrahma is wanted by Dean Smith’s side, though, and it is not too difficult to understand why when reviewing his numbers from last season.

Indeed, an impressive 2018-19 campaign saw the 23-year-old contribute 10 goals and 15 assists in 38 Championship appearances.

According to BirminghamLive, it’s a potential deal that could go “right up until the wire” as the summer transfer deadline looms.

As expected, the Villa fans have been on social media offering their views on the speculation and a selection of the tweets can be seen below:

Tottenham fans react as reports claim Jan Vertonghen was dropped due to poor fitness

[ad_pod ]

Despite winning their opening Premier League game of the season 3-1 against Aston Villa, some of the post-match talk about Tottenham has revolved around Jan Vertonghen’s absence.

The Belgium international was not named in Mauricio Pochettino’s 18-man squad for the clash, and the Spurs boss later claimed the decision was purely tactical.

Now, The Times journalist Gary Jacob has revealed Vertonghen was actually dropped because of his “fitness levels and pre-season”.

Indeed, The Daily Mail add Pochettino has no issues in leaving high-profile players out if they don’t meet the necessary standards, and that Vertonghen is “working hard to get back up to speed”.

After hearing the reported update on why the 32-year-old was missing, Spurs fans took to Twitter to voice their opinion on the matter.

Many supporters of the north London side threw their backing behind Pochettino’s stance and insisted poor fitness is a “very good reason” to drop someone.

Indeed, some fans simply hailed the Argentine for sticking to his principles and being “fair to everyone” in the squad.
