'Never saw a game like this' – Jurgen Klopp left raging by 'crazy decisions' as Liverpool suffer first defeat of the season at Tottenham

Liverpool lost 2-1 to SpursSaw Curtis Jones sent offDiogo Jota given two yellow cardsWHAT HAPPENED?

The Reds were reduced to 10 men in the first half when Curtis Jones saw an initial yellow card upgraded to a red after a VAR review following a challenge on Yves Bissouma.

Liverpool thought they had scored the opening goal afterwards, but it was ruled out for an offside on Luis Diaz and Spurs went on to break the deadlock moments later.

Cody Gakpo pulled the visitors level just before the break, but the challenge became even more difficult when Diogo Jota was sent off with two yellow cards in the space of a minute and Spurs went on to seal the win with the help of a Joel Matip own goal right at the end.

The defeat is Liverpool's first of the season and saw Spurs leapfrog them into second place in the Premier League.

The Reds have now had four red cards across their first six matches in the Premier League, which is as many as they received in their previous 168 games and Klopp feels some of the calls in Saturday's match were particularly egregious.

WHAT THEY SAID

"I was never more proud of the team than today. I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions," he told .

"We scored an own goal, that is really tough to take but I am really proud. The first red card, Curtis steps on the ball and goes over. Not a bad tackle. It looks different in slow motion. He steps full throttle on the ball and goes over the ball. That is unlucky.

"[For Diogo Jota] first yellow was not a yellow. Then he gets a second and to defend with nine players is tricky."

The Premier League club announced on Tuesday that the midfielder is absent from the squad for the European encounter in Spain. The 30-year-old is struggling with a muscle problem.

The Ghana international recently returned from a groin injury that kept him out of action for over a month. Partey returned with a 15-minute cameo against Manchester City in early-October but was left on the bench for the duration of the 2-2 draw with Chelsea at the weekend.

He has featured just four times in the Premier League this season and is yet to feature in the Champions League.

Since joining Arsenal from Atletico Madrid three years ago, Partey has suffered a long list of injuries. The midfielder was limited to 24 matches in the Premier League in each of his first two seasons in England. He was a more consistent presence last year, however, as he managed to make 33 appearances in the top-flight, only being ruled out for a brief period with a thigh issue.

'Lazy' Karim Benzema struggling and Nuno Espirito Santo facing the sack! Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad facing a massive crisis

Despite spending big over the summer, the defending champions have slumped to sixth in the table and are in danger of falling out of the title race

Karim Benzema's move to Saudi Arabia obviously wasn't just about football. But he insisted it wasn't solely a question of money, either. Benzema explained that he was not only enamoured with the idea of living in a "Muslim country", but also intrigued by the prospect of a "new challenge" and a "new project".

"I really want to help Saudi football grow," the Al-Ittihad striker stated just over two weeks ago. "I wanted to be part of the story. That's the reason why I came here."

However, Benzema also claimed that while he was fully committed to transforming the Saudi Pro League into something truly special, "the most important thing for me will be to win trophies at the end of the season." Right now, though, achieving that goal is looking far more difficult than expected…

Getty'Historic milestone for a special club'

When the Benzema deal was made official in June, Al-Ittihad president Anmar Bin Abdullah Alhailae quite rightly called the forward's arrival "a historic milestone for this special club". However, it was also a colossal coup for the Saudi Pro League, arguably even more significant than Cristiano Ronaldo joining Al-Nassr six months previously.

Why? Because Benzema was still performing somewhere near the peak of his powers. The same could not be said of Ronaldo, who had been shunned by all of Europe's elite after petulantly forcing his way out of Manchester United because he could no longer get in the starting line-up. A catastrophic World Cup campaign in Qatar tarnished his legacy and did nothing to challenge the belief that Ronaldo was now far more trouble than he was worth.

Benzema, by complete contrast, was the reigning Ballon d'Or holder and, for all his increasing injury issues, had still scored 31 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions during the 2022-23 campaign. Tellingly, coach Carlo Ancelotti was desperate to keep him.

AdvertisementGetty'All eyes will be on Karim'

Benzema, though, turned down Madrid's offer of a contract extension to sign a massive deal with Al-Ittihad, who had just been taken over by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). The numbers were staggering, but one could understand the thinking behind the transfer. Benzema would add even greater legitimacy to the league than Ronaldo, meaning other high-profile players would follow the Frenchman to Saudi Arabia, and so it proved.

Neymar was the most eye-catching acquisition for Al-Hilal (another club taken over by PIF), but Al-Ittihad further strengthened their 2022-23 title-winning squad with midfield duo Fabinho and N'Golo Kante.

Benzema was obviously the big draw, though. As club president Anmar Bin Abdullah Alhailae said, "all eyes will be on Karim" – and they most definitely were when he made his debut on July 27, in the Arab Club Champions Cup. Benzema didn't disappoint either, scoring the winner in a 2-1 win over Esperance de Tunis.

He proved decisive again in Al-Ittihad's two subsequent group-stage games, against Club Sfaxien and Al-Shorta. Nuno Espirito Santo's side may have then been eliminated in the quarter-finals, but with Benzema having seemingly settled quickly into his new surroundings, the champions looked a good bet to retain their Saudi Pro League title when the new season got under way in the middle of August.

However, while Al-Ittihad won their opening two games without conceding a goal, Benzema failed to score in either victory and, ahead of the meeting with Al-Riyadh on August 24, media outlet claimed that there was tension behind the scenes.

'This is bullsh*t!'

According to the report, Nuno had not been consulted on the signing of Benzema and deemed the attacker incompatible with his tactical game plan. It was alleged that Benzema was "not comfortable" playing under the Portuguese as a consequence, and felt that the coach was not treating him in a "professional" manner. They had also apparently clashed over the captaincy.

The following day, though, Benzema wore the armband against Al-Riyadh and opened his Pro League account with the first goal in an impressive 4-0 win.

Even more significantly, Benzema moved to quash rumours of a falling-out with team-mate Abderrazak Hamdallah, Al-Ittihad's top scorer during last season's title triumph, by handing him the ball following the award of a first-half penalty.

After the game, Nuno also angrily addressed talk of a rift between him and his star player. "I want to clarify one thing," Nuno told a press conference. "I read in the press that my relationship with Karim was not good. Those who know me will know, of course, that this is bullsh*t!

"My relationship with all the players is good. We have a strong group relationship and we are happy with all the players. We are happy that Karim is here with us. He is happy, as you can see on the pitch. He is enjoying playing for Al-Ittihad. I understand where he comes from. But we are a strong group, we are a very strong group."

GettyPressure mounting

That may very well be the case, but there have been increasing signs of weakness in recent weeks. The cracks first started to appear at the start of November, when Al-Ittihad lost their 100 percent record by blowing a 3-1 lead in a 4-3 loss at home to their biggest rivals, Al-Hilal, that featured a hat-trick from Aleksandar Mitrovic.

They bounced back with narrow wins over Al-Okhdood and Al-Fateh, with Benzema scoring the decisive goal against the former. However, the titleholders have now failed to win any of their last four league games, which has seen them slump from first to sixth in the table, eight points behind Al-Hilal.

They also required penalties to beat second-division side Al-Kholood in the King's Cup, and though they have since gone on to secure a quarter-final berth in the competition, and have won two from two in the AFC Champions League, their Pro League form has some worried as to whether their title defence is already petering out. Consequently, the pressure is mounting on both Nuno and Benzema.

Neymar suffered a knee injury during Brazil's World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay last month and then had to undergo surgery to treat the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus. Now, Brazil national team doctor Lasmar has confirmed that while the star player is recovering well, he will have to go through a "lengthy rehabilitation process" due to the "complex" nature of his injury.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The Al-Hilal superstar has suffered multiple foot and ankle injuries in the past few years which have further worsened his situation. The team doctor also revealed that while the Brazilian underwent two other surgeries in the past, the current one has been the most serious of all, and as a result the 31-year-old needs to be more careful during the recovery period.

WHAT DID RODRIGO LASMAR SAY?

While providing an update on the player's condition, Lasmar said: "Neymar has been recovering very well. Yesterday [Sunday] I was with the player for a new post-operative assessment, already scheduled. He is recovering very well, of course, still in the initial phase. It's a complex injury, he ruptured a ligament and needs to be off his feet for a while. Due to the associated injuries, he will go through a lengthy rehabilitation process, he is aware of that. But he has been responding very well, we are satisfied.

"It's very important that he understands the serious injury he suffered. He's had other injuries and situations before, this was his third surgery. I participated in the other two, they were shorter periods. This time it is the most serious injury, it takes more time, so we need him to be very focused and dedicated to recovery. He is following everything we propose."

Sarri has regularly been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia to become the latest high-profile name tempted to the Middle East. The former Chelsea boss, who has previously said he wants to retire at Lazio, has once again been asked about rumours he could join a Saudi Pro League club but gave the answer short shrift.

“Saudi Arabia? Can I smoke there? Then we’ll see," he told . "However, it is not a programmable thing today. If I think about the future, I would like to be the coach of Lazio at Flaminio. It’s a project in which Lotito believes in, even if obviously he wants guarantees."

Sarri's future has come under scrutiny after an underwhelming start to the season. The capital club will return to action after the international break placed 10th in the Serie A table and already a distant 14 points behind leaders Inter. There has been better news in the Champions League, with a 1-0 win over Dutch champions Feyenoord moving Lazio into second place in the group, just a point behind leaders Atletico.

Real Madrid player ratings vs Napoli: Jude Bellingham the best in the world – but Los Blancos have a new hero in teenager Nico Paz

The England ace scored one goal and created another but it was Nico Diaz's late strike which effectively secured another Champions League victory

Jude Bellingham was impactful once again but Real Madrid turned to an unlikely source to seal a Champions League win over Napoli. Academy product Nico Paz scored his first goal for the club in the 84th minute, a speculative strike from distance that gave his side the lead, serving as the defining moment in a 4-2 win.

Napoli took the lead early on, Giovanni Simeone bundling the ball over the line after a sweeping counter-attack. Their lead lasted less than two minutes. Rodrygo, after scoring twice at the weekend, found the equaliser, cutting onto his right foot and angling a shot into the top right corner.

And Madrid took the lead shortly after, Bellingham bagging his 15th goal of the season with an acrobatic header, nodded back across the keeper from the far post. But the visitors stayed in it. They levelled the contest after the break, Frank Anguissa lashing the ball into the corner early in the second half.

As the half wore on, Madrid looked more likely to grab a winner, creating a litany of chances, most of the game flowing through the influential Bellingham. And they found the big goal late. It came from Nico, who shimmied away from a defender before unleashing a shot from distance.

Alex Meret will feel he should have denied the effort, but it hit the net all the same, marking a seminal moment in the 19-year-old substitute's career. Joselu's fourth – a tap-in at the far post – sealed an ultimately comfortable victory for the hosts.

GOAL rates Real Madrid's players from the Santiago Bernabeu…

Getty Goalkeeper & Defence

Andriy Lunin (6/10):

Could do little about Napoli's goals, although his effort to turn the first away was a valiant one.

Dani Carvajal (6/10):

Given a tough time by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia but got forward well and contributed in attacking areas.

Antonio Rudiger (7/10):

A vital intervention prevented what seemed to be a certain goal on the stroke of half time. Went about the rest of his defensive work with aplomb, although he was perhaps fortunate not to receive punishment for a dangerous challenge on Piotr Zielinski.

David Alaba (6/10):

Assisted Bellingham's header with a delightful ball. Less steady at the other end of the pitch, struggling with first Simeone, then Victor Osimhen.

Ferland Mendy (7/10):

Covered his man well and showed a bit more going forward than in recent weeks.

Toni Kroos (6/10):

As steady as ever on the ball but was exposed defensively on a number of occasions.

Federico Valverde (7/10):

Full of legs in a deeper midfield position and calm on the ball.

Dani Ceballos (6/10):

Solid in his first start of the season. Just had to eat up minutes and he went about that well.

Jude Bellingham (8/10):

Buried a Ronaldo-esque header at the far post. Bossed it from central areas throughout. The best player in the world at the moment.

Getty Attack

Brahim Diaz (6/10):

Instrumental in the build up to the Madrid equaliser. Bright on the ball, always willing to run when he didn't have it. Removed after an hour with an apparent calf issue.

Rodrygo (8/10):

Scored a wonderful equalising goal. Was a constant threat on the counter and linked up well with the rest of Madrid's attack. He's in excellent form at the moment.

Joselu (4/10):

Missed a sitter immediately after being brought on and squandered further chances after that before finally getting on the scoresheet – when it didn't matter.

Nico Paz (8/10):

What a moment! Came on and scored the crucial third goal.

Nacho (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

Lucas Vazquez (N/A):

Late legs to seal the result.

Carlo Ancelotti (7/10):

Picked his strongest side, especially given the injury situation. He will be disappointed to concede twice but Madrid were good enough going forward to grab a big win. Job done in the group stage.

Arsenal determined to ruin Emma Hayes’ Chelsea swan song before USWNT switch as Gunners midfielder Lia Walti sends warning ahead of London derby

Arsenal are keen to ruin Emma Hayes’ Chelsea swan song as Gunners midfielder Lia Walti has had some fighting talk before the London derby.

Gunners to host Chelsea Walti determined to spoil Hayes' farewell Wants to stop Blues' juggernaut in England WHAT HAPPENED?

Hayes, set to become the highest-paid women's coach globally, will join the US Women’s national team after this season. She boasts of an impressive record in West London with 13 major trophies at Chelsea, including four consecutive WSL titles. However, Walti is determined to stop Hayes and Chelsea at the Emirates when the two sides lock horns in a blockbuster London derby on Sunday.

AdvertisementWHAT WALTI SAID

Speaking to reporters ahead of the game, Walti, said: "Emma has done so much for women’s football in the English league. We all have the biggest respect for what she did here. But we also don’t want her to finish that era on a high. We’re here to compete with Chelsea, we’re here to win trophies and we’re not going to be nicer to them just because it’s Emma’s last year, that’s for sure.

"We have respect for everything she’s done here and she has a really exciting job ahead but the focus is on us. We want to beat not only Chelsea, we want to win the league, we want to win trophies and I hope we can make it a little bit hard for her to finish on a high this year.”

Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Arsenal have recovered from a challenging start to the season and currently sit second in the WSL, three points behind Chelsea. A win would take them level on points with the reigning champions but history is not on their side as the Gunners have not beaten Chelsea in the league since 2021.

"The season is still very young but we all know these games can make the difference in the end,” she said. “I think we did well with the results against Manchester City and Manchester United but it’s going to be even bigger against Chelsea.

“Firstly they’re three points ahead of us and secondly Chelsea vs Arsenal – it can’t really get much bigger. From the games we’ve had in the past, they’ve mostly been tight games so it’s about who’s better on the day and maybe the subs can make a big change as well for both teams. I’m excited and really looking forward to it," he added.

“We’re having great momentum with our team right now but we’re going to focus on ourselves. For sure in front of our home crowd, there is only one goal for us and we want to win that game. That would set us up well for the next games after that for the new year.”

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR WALTI?

With more than 57,000 tickets already sold, Arsenal aim to break their own WSL attendance record in the upcoming contest, underlining the heightened anticipation for this crucial encounter. And Walti remains determined to stand up to the expectations of the crowd and project themselves as "role models" to the young fans.

"You can hear the passion from the fans and I think the club is building a great culture. We can be role models for the little kids," she said.

"They come and look up to us and they want to do what we’re doing. That’s the best part. To see kids in the crowd smiling and screaming at us and wanting to be exactly where we are one day is just incredible."

Anthony Gordon for England! On-fire Newcastle winger more deserving of a Three Lions place than Marcus Rashford right now

The 22-year-old has been 'one of the best players in the Premier League this season' and could well end up playing at Euro 2024

Saturday night's Premier League clash between Newcastle and Manchester United presented pundits with a chance to compare Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford. The contrast was stark.

Gordon didn't just score the game's only goal – or combine wonderfully well with Tino Livramento down Newcastle's left-hand side. He also worked tirelessly for his team – unlike Rashford, whom former England No.9 Alan Shearer said "didn't look interested", the suspicion being that the United forward was unhappy with being moved from the left to the right flank to accommodate Alejandro Garnacho.

So, as head-to-heads go, Gordon vs Rashford was as one-sided as the game itself, which only prompted further calls for the Liverpudlian to replace the Mancunian in the England squad.

As ex-Scotland striker Ally McCoist said on , "If you’re talking about current form, Gordon has been playing far better." Which is noteworthy in itself, when one considers how much Gordon was struggling last season while Rashford was running riot for United.

Touchline tantrum

When Newcastle signed Gordon from Everton in January, the size of the transfer fee (an initial £40 million ($50m) with the possibility of a further £5m in bonuses) was questioned by many. The attacker's potential had been obvious since making his professional debut in a Europa League match at just 16, but six years on, there were legitimate questions over his end product and his temperament.

His first few months did little to reassure the sceptics. On April 8, Gordon was brought on at half-time in a game against Brentford, only to then be replaced in the dying seconds. He was furious. As Howe tried to explain the decision to him on the touchline, Gordon petulantly pushed his manager's arm away from him before making a beeline for the bench.

AdvertisementGetty Images'A young player learning the game'

"You don't want to see any player react like that because, suddenly, you will have a team that looks like it doesn't have the discipline that it needs," Howe admitted afterwards. "I made a decision based on Anthony going down holding his ankle, based on the fact there were seconds left on the clock, to try and do what I felt I needed to do to win the game. He needed to accept that and, if he had an issue, come and see me in private.

"That's how I felt he should have acted in that situation, but it's a young player learning about the game and learning about us at the same time, so I've got no issue with him."

Not least because Gordon promptly apologised for his actions. And he learned from them, too. When he was hauled off 54 minutes into his full home debut against Southampton later that month, he was internally upset, but "he didn't let that show", as Howe acknowledged. "There was no outward sign of a negative reaction to that, which you need in that situation."

Getty ImagesGetting up to speed

Still, those were tough times for Gordon. Three months on from his arrival at St James' Park, he felt as if he was still playing catch-up. Initially, he didn't feel fit enough for Howe's high-energy brand of football, and then his progress was checked by a minor ankle injury picked up in March. There were tactical issues, too, though.

"I knew I wasn't playing to the style of the team, which I didn't fully understand, the way they were playing," Gordon admitted during the summer. "It was difficult, I won't lie. The manager's tactical detail is so impressive. And there is so much of it compared to what I was used to before.

"But he did warn me it would take a while [to understand], and the other players warned me too."

Getty Images'One of the best players in the Premier League this season'

The summer represented a turning point. First, Gordon benefited from regular game time with the England Under-21s, whom he helped win the European Championship with two goals and a succession of inspirational displays that earned him the Player of the Tournament award.

Consequently, he headed off for his summer holidays in high spirits. When he returned – early – he hit the ground running in pre-season training and began the campaign fitter and completely in tune with Howe and his team-mates.

Gordon has started 12 of Newcastle's 14 Premier League matches to date, and that regular run of games has resulted in a constant supply of goals and assists. He has struck six times in total, netting in each of Newcastle's last four home games in the process, while he has also contributed three assists.

No Newcastle player has been directly involved in more goals, which explains why pundit Jamie Carragher has labelled Gordon "one of the best players in the Premier League this season". The former Liverpool defender added, "Carry on like this and he's going to the Euros!"
